A robo-advisor is usually the efficient, lower-cost starting point for one straightforward, diversified portfolio when you are comfortable answering an online questionnaire and receiving mostly digital service. A human financial advisor becomes more valuable when your household needs coordinated tax, retirement-income, insurance, estate, education or business planning, or when you want an ongoing relationship and judgment during difficult decisions.
Choose by matching the service to the work you need done—not by assuming that a lower fee, a human credential or an automated portfolio will produce better returns. Investment performance is not guaranteed by either model.

What a robo-advisor actually does
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes a robo-advisor as an online service that generally asks about your goals, time horizon, income, other assets and risk tolerance, then uses those answers in its advisory process. The service typically recommends and manages a portfolio with software, rebalancing rules and funds selected for the account type and risk profile. The SEC also cautions that robo-advisors vary widely in their services and methods, so the label alone does not tell you what you receive.
Typical onboarding and management
- Questionnaire: You enter goals such as retirement or a home purchase, the date you expect to need the money, income, existing assets and your tolerance for losses.
- Portfolio recommendation: The platform maps your answers to an asset mix, often using diversified mutual funds or exchange-traded funds. Review how the recommendation is generated and whether you can change assumptions.
- Account opening and funding: You select an eligible taxable or retirement account, transfer money and authorize the service to trade or rebalance.
- Ongoing automation: The program may rebalance, invest new deposits and provide tax features such as tax-loss harvesting. Each feature is provider-specific; confirm eligibility, limitations and whether a human reviews exceptions.
- Digital support: Service may be delivered through a dashboard, email or chat. Some programs offer telephone access, while others reserve human planning for a higher-priced tier.
Automation can reduce the number of decisions you must make and can impose a disciplined allocation. It does not, by itself, analyze every legal, tax, insurance or family issue affecting the plan.

What a human financial advisor adds
A human advisor can provide investment advice plus broader planning. SEC guidance describes planning that may include investments, insurance, taxes, retirement and estate planning, with arrangements such as hourly fees. Consumer comparison guidance also identifies tax strategy, college saving and estate planning as areas in which human advice can be useful.
Planning that spans the household
A person can connect decisions that software may treat separately: how a concentrated stock position affects your tax bracket, whether an insurance need changes the amount you can invest, how a business sale affects an estate plan, or which accounts to draw from first in retirement. The quality of that work depends on the advisor’s expertise, process and willingness to coordinate with your attorney and tax professional; hiring a person does not guarantee comprehensive planning.
Judgment during uncertain periods
An advisor can help you revisit assumptions after a job loss, inheritance, divorce, illness or market decline. That conversation may keep a plan aligned with your actual circumstances. It can also introduce behavioral or sales conflicts, so compensation, duties and incentives must be examined rather than assumed.

How the costs compare
Compare the all-in cost, not only the prominently advertised advisory percentage. A robo arrangement can include an asset-based advisory fee, a monthly subscription, fund expense ratios and extra charges for a human-advice tier. The SEC gave examples in 2023 of subscription charges of $3, $5 or $10 per month for some smaller robo-advisor accounts; the amount depends on the specific agreement and balance.
Morningstar reported a 0.25% median robo-advisor fee in 2024 and said traditional financial-advisor fees in its comparison were about four times higher, around 1%. That is a market benchmark from a 2025 report using 2024 data, not a universal quote. Minimums, fund expenses, planning fees and hybrid tiers can materially change what you pay.

| Cost item | How it is usually charged | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Robo asset-based fee | Percentage of assets managed | Rate tiers, minimum balance, billing frequency and whether cash is included |
| Robo subscription | Fixed monthly amount; SEC examples in 2023 included $3, $5 or $10 for some smaller accounts | Exact amount, services included, account-size limits and cancellation terms |
| Fund expense ratios | Deducted inside the funds rather than billed separately | Each fund’s current expense ratio and whether lower-cost alternatives are available |
| Human or hybrid planning | Additional percentage, subscription, hourly fee or a combination | Number and type of meetings, advice scope, response times and charges for work outside the stated tier |
| Traditional advisory fee | Often an assets-under-management percentage, but hourly and project fees also exist | Breakpoints, minimum annual charge, trading or custodial costs and planning deliverables |
For scale, a 0.25% annual fee on $100,000 is $250 before fund expenses, while 1% is $1,000. Those calculations illustrate the percentage difference; they are not quotes for any particular firm and do not include subscription, planning or fund costs. A cheaper service can still be poor value if it omits planning you need, while a higher fee may be reasonable when it replaces several specialists or prevents costly mistakes.
Which model fits common situations?
| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One diversified taxable or retirement portfolio and little need for meetings | Robo-advisor | Automated onboarding and portfolio management may meet the need at a lower headline fee. |
| Several goals involving taxes, retirement income, insurance, estate or business issues | Human advisor or a clearly defined hybrid | Coordination and judgment across the household can matter more than automation. |
| You want reassurance from a person but prefer digital account management | Hybrid service | Digital tools can be combined with human involvement; verify exactly when the human participates. |
| You are evaluating any provider | Compare and verify before opening | Check total fees, minimums, fund expenses, services, conflicts, registration, disciplinary history and communication terms. |
The comparison points that determine value
Planning breadth
Write down every decision you expect the service to address: investment selection, saving rate, debt, taxes, insurance, education funding, estate documents, charitable giving, business equity and retirement withdrawals. A digital portfolio service may cover only the investment account. A human may cover more, but ask for a written scope; “financial planning” can mean a one-time report or an ongoing process.

Human access and response time
Ask whether you receive a named advisor, a rotating team or customer-service representatives. Find out whether meetings are scheduled or unlimited, whether video and telephone are available, and the expected response time for urgent questions. For a hybrid service, ask which decisions require a human review and whether the person has authority to change the portfolio or only explains the software’s recommendation.
Portfolio construction and tax features
Request the proposed asset allocation, fund list, rebalancing method and treatment of cash. For taxable accounts, ask whether the service offers tax-loss harvesting, how it handles wash-sale risks across accounts and whether you can restrict particular securities. Tax features can create complexity and are not automatically beneficial; your tax situation and other accounts matter.
Account types and minimums
Confirm that the provider supports the accounts you actually need, such as individual retirement accounts, joint taxable accounts, trusts, custodial accounts or small-business plans. Check opening minimums, recurring-deposit requirements, transfer-out procedures and whether all account types receive the same investment and planning features.

Conflicts, compensation and legal duty
Ask how the firm and individual are paid, whether they receive commissions or other compensation, and whether they have incentives to recommend particular products. The CFP Board’s 2020 Code and Standards requires a CFP professional to act as a fiduciary when providing Financial Advice to a Client. A CFP designation does not answer every compensation or service question, so still review the specific engagement.

Before funding an account, learn how to transfer assets, close the relationship and obtain your records. Ask about transfer fees, proprietary investments, tax consequences and whether fractional shares must be sold. A low entry cost is less attractive if exiting is difficult or expensive.
Is a robo-advisor suitable for retirement investing?
For a saver accumulating retirement assets in a straightforward account, automated contributions, rebalancing and a risk questionnaire may be sufficient. The harder questions often arise near and during retirement: how much to withdraw, which account to tap first, how a large withdrawal affects taxes, when to claim government benefits, how to insure a surviving spouse and how to fund long-term care. Those decisions may require coordinated human planning even if the portfolio itself remains automated.
If you are rolling workplace retirement savings into an individual retirement account or annuity, treat the recommendation as a high-scrutiny event. A 2024 CFP Board survey found that only 5% of respondents did not expect a financial professional to fulfill a fiduciary role for this type of advice. That is a survey of expectations, not proof that every advisor is a fiduciary in every relationship. Ask in writing whether the person is acting as a fiduciary for the rollover, how they are compensated and what alternatives were considered.
When a human advisor is more likely to earn the fee
- Multiple tax regimes: You have restricted stock, a concentrated position, a business, significant charitable giving or a complex filing situation.
- Retirement-income design: You need a withdrawal sequence, cash-flow stress testing, survivor planning or coordination with pensions and benefits.
- Insurance and liability: Coverage decisions affect the investment plan, estate or business.
- Family and estate issues: You are coordinating trusts, heirs, education goals, special-needs planning or an inheritance.
- Behavioral support: You know that panic selling or constant strategy changes are a serious risk and value an accountable relationship.
These are reasons to seek broader advice, not promises that a human will outperform a portfolio algorithm. Ask what concrete deliverables, meetings and implementation help are included.

When a robo-advisor is likely to be enough
- Your main need is a diversified allocation in one or two standard accounts.
- Your goals, horizon and risk tolerance are stable and easy to explain.
- You can follow a written plan through market declines without frequent reassurance.
- You prefer transparent digital access and want to minimize advisory costs.
- You are willing to handle tax returns, insurance, estate documents and other specialists separately.
Even in this case, read the advisory agreement and fund disclosures. Automated does not mean free, personalized in every respect or free of conflicts.

Hybrid advice combines digital tools with some human involvement. Vanguard’s 2025 analysis of 21,400 SEC Form ADV Part 2 filings from 2023—representing 15,396 advisory firms and $128.4 trillion in regulatory assets under management—distinguished digital-only robo advice from hybrid advice that includes human involvement. The category is broad, so do not infer the service level from the word “hybrid.”
Ask whether the human contact is a one-time plan, annual review, on-demand coaching or discretionary portfolio management. Confirm the assets or decisions covered, the advisor’s credentials, the response standard and the additional fee. A hybrid can be a sensible middle ground when you want help with a few planning decisions but do not need a full-service relationship.
How to vet either type of provider
- Define the job: List your accounts, goals, time horizons, planning questions and the type of access you want.
- Read the relationship summary: The SEC recommends reviewing the Form CRS relationship summary and the firm’s Form ADV Part 2 brochure. Look for services, fees, conflicts, disciplinary information and termination terms.
- Confirm registration: Check whether the firm or individual is registered with the SEC, a state regulator or FINRA, as applicable. Use the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database to review background information.
- Verify fiduciary language: Ask when the fiduciary duty applies, whether it covers all services or only specific advice, and whether another legal standard applies to products or transactions.
- Calculate your total annual cost: Add advisory or subscription charges, fund expense ratios, planning fees, trading or custodial charges and any required minimums. Request the estimate in dollars for your expected balance.
- Test the scope: Ask for a sample plan or meeting agenda showing how taxes, insurance, retirement income, estate issues and education goals are handled—or confirm that they are outside scope.
- Check implementation: Determine who places trades, handles account transfers, coordinates with your tax professional and documents recommendations.
- Review communication and exit terms: Record meeting frequency, response times, supported channels, transfer procedures, closing costs and record-retention practices.
Questions to ask before signing
- What exact services are included, and what is explicitly excluded?
- How are you and the firm compensated, including commissions, referral payments and incentives?
- What is the estimated annual dollar cost at my current and expected balances?
- Which funds, model portfolios or products can you use, and how are they selected?
- Who will I contact during a market decline, tax deadline or family emergency?
- How often is my plan reviewed, and what events trigger an update?
- Can you coordinate with my accountant and attorney, and is that work included?
- What happens if I transfer the account or end the relationship?
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing on the headline percentage alone
A 0.25% advisory fee can be outweighed by fund costs, a subscription or a separate planning charge. Conversely, paying about 1% for an advisor is not automatically wasteful if the relationship delivers valuable, ongoing planning. Compare dollar costs and the work performed.

Ignoring account and tax complexity
A portfolio recommendation can be unsuitable if it overlooks employer stock, old retirement accounts, taxable gains, insurance gaps or estate documents. Supply a complete balance sheet and ask what the service does with information it cannot handle.
Expecting automation to replace judgment
Software follows its inputs and rules. Review your questionnaire after major life changes and ask how exceptions, unusual assets and changing goals are handled.
Failing to check registration and disciplinary history
Before transferring money, inspect the relationship summary, Form ADV Part 2 and the relevant regulatory database. Treat missing or unclear answers as a reason to pause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical decision sequence
- Start with the complexity of the decisions, not the technology. If you need integrated planning, interview human or hybrid providers first.
- If your need is a single diversified portfolio, compare several robo services on all-in cost, account availability, investment method and support.
- For a hybrid, identify precisely what a human does and how often you can use that service.
- Verify registration, fiduciary language, compensation and disciplinary history for the actual firm and person.
- Read the agreements, calculate the dollar cost and keep copies before funding the account.
- Schedule a review after major life events and at least whenever your goals, income, tax situation or risk capacity changes.
Bottom line
Use a robo-advisor when automation, a diversified portfolio and digital service solve your main problem at a cost you understand. Choose a human advisor when coordination, judgment and accountability across several financial decisions are worth paying for. A hybrid is appropriate only when its human role is clearly defined. In every case, verify the provider’s scope, fees, registration and legal obligations before you invest.
