Revised vs. belated income tax return in India (AY 2026-27): which should you file?

The deciding question is whether a valid return already exists for that assessment year. If you missed the original deadline and have not filed a valid return, file a belated return. If you filed a valid return and later find an omission or mistake, file a revised return—provided the revision window is still open. For AY 2026-27 (income earned in FY 2025-26), the Income Tax Department states that a belated return may be filed by 31 December 2026, while a revised return may be filed by 31 March 2027, subject in both cases to assessment being completed earlier. These dates are year-specific and should not be applied automatically to another assessment year.

Belated or revised: the decision in one table

Your situation Likely route What to check
No valid return has been filed, and the original due date has passed Belated return under section 139(4) The assessment year, the applicable belated deadline, whether assessment has already been completed, and any fee or interest.
A valid return was filed, but income, deductions, tax credits, bank details or another item is wrong or missing Revised return under section 139(5), if still available The revision deadline for that assessment year, assessment status and any additional fee.
The issue is an error in a CPC intimation or order rather than a change to the return itself Rectification, only if the issue qualifies Whether the mistake belongs to the CPC processing order or intimation and meets the Department’s rectification rules.
An uploaded return has not been verified and you are considering replacing it Check the portal’s discard rules before acting Discarding is irreversible; the portal says a discarded return is treated as not filed and a later filing may become belated.

The Income Tax Department describes the basic distinction in its Income Tax Returns FAQs. A belated return is a late first filing. A revised return is a correction to a return that has already been filed.

What a belated return means

A belated return is the return you submit after the original statutory due date when no valid return for that year has been filed. It is not a second version of an existing return. You prepare the return for the relevant assessment year, select the belated-filing option available on the portal, calculate the tax and applicable charges, submit it and complete e-verification.

When belated filing is the right route

  • You did not submit a return by the original due date.
  • No valid return is currently on record for that assessment year.
  • The relevant belated-filing deadline has not passed and assessment has not been completed, or the Department has otherwise kept the filing route open.

If you uploaded a return but never verified it, do not automatically assume that it is a valid filed return or that you should simply submit another one. Check its status and the current portal instructions first. The Department’s discard guidance explains the consequences of discarding an unverified return.

What a revised return means

A revised return corrects or completes a return that was already filed. You generally use it when you discover an omitted source of income, an incorrect figure, a missed tax credit, a wrong bank account, an address error or another detail that can still be changed through the revision facility.

When revision is the right route

  • A return for the assessment year was validly filed.
  • You have identified a mistake or omission in that return.
  • The revision period remains open and assessment has not been completed.

A revised return replaces the earlier version for filing purposes; it is not a request to the Centralised Processing Centre to correct an already issued processing result. If the problem is in a CPC intimation or order, read the separate rectification rules instead of using revision as a general appeal against processing.

AY 2026-27 deadlines and the transition rule

For AY 2026-27, the Department states that returns for income earned during FY 2025-26 continue to be governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961. This remains the case even though the Income-tax Act, 2025 takes effect on 1 April 2026. The assessment year therefore matters more than the calendar year in which you happen to file.

Filing route AY 2026-27 deadline stated by the Department Important qualification
Belated return under section 139(4) 31 December 2026 Filing must occur before assessment is completed if that happens earlier.
Revised return under section 139(5) 31 March 2027 Filing must occur before assessment is completed if that happens earlier. An additional fee applies when the revision is filed after 31 December 2026 and through 31 March 2027.

These dates are the Department’s stated AY 2026-27 guidance, not universal deadlines for every year. Check for any later Central Board of Direct Taxes extension, portal notice or assessment event before relying on them. The Department’s year-specific material is available through its returns FAQ and its AY 2026-27 ITR FAQ.

What changes for AY 2025-26 and earlier

The Department says the time for filing revised or belated returns for AY 2025-26 and earlier expires before 1 April 2026. That means you should not copy the AY 2026-27 dates into an older year. An updated return may still be available for an earlier year under separate conditions and time limits, but it is a different statutory route. Verify eligibility and the applicable period for the particular year before choosing it.

A practical decision process

  1. Write down the assessment year. For AY 2026-27, the underlying income is from FY 2025-26. Do not use the financial year alone when selecting the return.
  2. Check the filing record. Look for a filed and verified return for that assessment year. If there is no valid return, the starting assumption is belated filing; if there is one, the starting assumption is revision.
  3. Check whether assessment is complete. The Department’s stated dates stop when assessment is completed, even if the calendar deadline has not arrived.
  4. Identify the problem. A missed first filing is not a revision. A changed income or deduction in an existing return is not normally rectification. A processing mistake in a CPC intimation may belong in rectification.
  5. Calculate the financial effect. Reconcile tax already paid, tax deducted or collected, interest and any late-filing fee before submission.
  6. Use the route that matches that status. Selecting the wrong return type can create a defective filing history and may require further correction.
  7. Verify the submission. Electronic filing is not the end of the process; complete e-verification within the applicable timeline shown by the Department and retain the acknowledgement.

How to file a belated return

The exact portal screens can change, but the substantive sequence is stable. Use the Income Tax Department’s e-Filing service for the correct assessment year and choose the belated-return option where the form asks for the filing section or return type.

  1. Collect the year’s records. Keep Form 16, Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS), bank statements, interest certificates and records for deductions, investments or other income in front of you.
  2. Choose the assessment year and ITR form. Confirm that the form matches your sources of income and taxpayer status. Do not select a form merely because it was used in a previous year.
  3. Mark the return as belated. The return must identify that it is being filed after the original due date under the applicable provision.
  4. Enter and reconcile income. Compare salary, interest, capital or other reported income with Form 26AS, AIS and your own records. Resolve differences rather than copying one statement without checking.
  5. Review regime and credits. Check the tax-regime selection, tax deducted or collected, advance tax, self-assessment tax, personal details and bank-account information.
  6. Compute charges and pay amounts due. A late filing can involve a fee and interest where tax is payable. The amount depends on the assessment year and your facts.
  7. Submit and e-verify. Complete the verification step within the applicable period. Save the acknowledgement, payment challans and a copy of the submitted return.

Returns are annexure-less. The Department generally does not ask you to attach Form 16, bank certificates or receipts to the ITR, but you should retain them in case of an assessment or inquiry. This recordkeeping point is covered in the Department’s ITR FAQ.

How to file a revised return

Revision starts from the return that already exists. You should have the acknowledgement number and filing date of the original return available, because the revised filing identifies the earlier return.

  1. Open the correct assessment year. Confirm that the year of the original return and the year you are revising are identical.
  2. Reconcile the error. Compare the filed return with Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, bank statements, interest certificates and deduction records. Record both the original figure and the corrected figure.
  3. Select revised return. Choose the revision option under the applicable filing provision and enter the original return’s acknowledgement details when requested.
  4. Re-enter the complete return. A revision is not limited to a small correction box. Carry forward every correct item and change the fields that were wrong or omitted.
  5. Check tax and credits again. A correction to income can alter tax, interest, refund, loss figures or payable amounts. Recheck regime choice, bank account, personal information and tax credits.
  6. Watch the date and fee. For AY 2026-27, the Department says revision is available up to 31 March 2027 or assessment completion, whichever is earlier; an additional fee applies for a revision filed after 31 December 2026 through 31 March 2027.
  7. Submit and e-verify the revised return. Keep the revised acknowledgement and evidence supporting the change.

Revision is available only while the relevant window remains open. If the portal no longer permits revision, do not label a different application as a revised return; determine whether rectification or an updated-return route is legally available.

Fees, interest and other consequences

Late-filing fee and interest

The Department’s FAQ warns that delayed filing may attract a late-filing fee and interest when tax is payable. Its AY 2026-27 ITR FAQ lists ₹1,000 where total income is up to ₹5 lakh and ₹5,000 where total income is above ₹5 lakh in the stated section 234I context. Those figures are Department guidance for the context described there, not a promise that every taxpayer in every year owes that amount. Confirm the applicable provision, assessment year, income and filing date before treating either figure as your liability.

Losses and deductions

Late filing can affect whether certain losses may be carried forward and may affect the availability of some deductions or exemptions. The consequence depends on the type of loss, the claim and the year. Do not assume that filing a belated return preserves every benefit that would have been available by the original due date.

Refunds and tax already paid

If tax was deducted, collected or paid in advance, reconcile those credits before submitting. A mismatch between your return and the Department’s records can change the result or trigger a query. Retain the statements used to support the credit even though they are not normally attached to an annexure-less return.

Do not confuse revision with rectification

Rectification is a separate process for eligible mistakes in an order, notice or intimation issued through CPC processing. It is not a general replacement for a revised return.

Issue you are trying to fix Route to examine
You forgot interest income or entered the wrong deduction in the return you filed Revised return, if the revision window is open.
CPC’s intimation does not correctly reflect a credit or contains an apparent processing error Rectification, if the issue fits the Department’s eligibility rules.
You have not filed a valid return at all Belated return, if the belated window is open.

The Department explains this distinction in Rectification of order passed by CPC. Read the order or intimation first; its nature determines whether rectification is even the right procedure.

What to do with an unverified uploaded return

An uploaded but unverified return needs a status check before you file again. The portal provides a discard facility in qualifying situations, but the Department warns that discarding cannot be reversed and causes the return to be treated as not filed. If the original due date has passed, a subsequent filing may then be treated as belated.

  1. Check whether the return is pending verification and whether the portal still allows verification.
  2. Read the current discard-return conditions at Discard Return.
  3. Do not discard merely to change a figure unless you understand the filing-date consequence.
  4. If you discard, retain the confirmation and file the replacement using the status the portal requires.

Examples that show the difference

Example 1: no return was filed

Meera missed the original due date for AY 2026-27 and has no valid return on record. Her route is a belated return, not a revised return. She must file by 31 December 2026 or before assessment is completed, whichever is earlier, and should check the fee, interest and possible loss or deduction consequences first.

Example 2: a filed return omitted bank interest

Rohan filed and verified his AY 2026-27 return, then noticed that a bank interest certificate and AIS showed income missing from the return. He should use a revised return while the revision period is open. If he files after 31 December 2026 and by 31 March 2027, the Department states that an additional fee applies; assessment completion can end the window sooner.

Example 3: CPC processing is the problem

Priya’s return contains the figures she intended, but the CPC intimation appears to have processed an eligible credit incorrectly. Her first question is whether the issue belongs to rectification of that intimation, not whether she should rewrite the return. The rectification rules determine whether that route is available.

Example 4: an unverified return is replaced

Dev uploaded a return but did not verify it and wants to change several entries. Before discarding it, he checks the portal rules because discard is irreversible and the discarded return is treated as not filed. If he submits a new return after the original due date, the new filing may carry belated-return consequences.

Pre-submission checklist

  • Assessment year confirmed, including the financial year from which the income arose.
  • Filing history checked: no valid return, or a valid return that needs revision.
  • Assessment status checked; the applicable window has not closed early.
  • Correct ITR form selected.
  • Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, bank statements and interest certificates reconciled.
  • Tax regime selection reviewed.
  • Tax deducted or collected, advance tax and self-assessment tax matched.
  • Personal details and bank-account information checked.
  • Late fee, additional revision fee where applicable, and interest reviewed.
  • Supporting records retained even though the ITR is annexure-less.
  • Submission e-verified within the applicable timeline and acknowledgement saved.

Common mistakes to avoid

Calling every late filing a revised return

Revision presupposes an earlier valid return. If none exists, filing a revised return does not solve the missing first filing; the belated route is the relevant one.

Using AY 2026-27 dates for another year

Deadlines change by assessment year. AY 2025-26 and earlier have the transition treatment described by the Department, and an updated return may be the only remaining route in some circumstances.

Ignoring assessment completion

A calendar date is not a guarantee. For the AY 2026-27 dates stated by the Department, assessment completion can be the earlier cutoff.

Treating rectification as a second revision

Rectification addresses eligible CPC order or intimation errors. It is not a broad method for changing income or deductions in an otherwise correct return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Submitting without checking records

Form 26AS and AIS are useful checks, not substitutes for your own bank statements, certificates and receipts. Resolve discrepancies before filing and keep the evidence.

Bottom line for AY 2026-27

If no valid return exists, file a belated return by 31 December 2026 unless assessment is completed earlier. If a valid return exists and needs correction, file a revised return by 31 March 2027 unless assessment is completed earlier; an additional fee applies to a revision filed after 31 December 2026 through 31 March 2027. Confirm the assessment year, filing status, assessment status, tax consequences and current portal instructions before submitting. A CPC processing error and an unverified uploaded return require separate checks rather than an automatic revised return.
