Report: Your Social Security Number Costs Less Than a Big Mac—but the Risk Is Far Greater

There is no authoritative, current price index showing that a Social Security number (SSN) universally sells for less than a Big Mac. Illicit listings can make an SSN look cheap, but the number itself is not a measure of the damage an exposed identity can cause. The practical danger comes when an SSN is combined with a name, address, birth date, account credentials or identity documents.

What the “less than a Big Mac” claim actually means

The comparison is a memorable description of some dark-web observations, not an official market statistic. A canonical search found no primary, nationally representative dataset establishing a universal SSN-only price below a Big Mac. Secondary reporting, including Experian’s explanation of Privacy Affairs’ Dark Web Price Index, describes changing listings and bundled personal data.

That means any dollar figure needs a label: who reported it, in what year and country, what information was included, and whether the listing was fresh and usable. An SSN offered alone is different from a package containing a person’s name, address, date of birth, driver-license details, email address or login credentials. Prices, quality and demand vary, and listings can be copied or resold after the information is already widely exposed.

Question What can be established What cannot be assumed
Is there a universal SSN price? No current, nationally representative SSN-only price index was identified. That every SSN sells for a particular amount or below a Big Mac’s price.
What is usually listed? Listings may bundle an SSN with names, addresses, birth dates, credentials or identity documents. That a low listing price reflects the value or safety of the underlying identity.
What determines usefulness? Completeness, freshness, geography, marketplace and whether the data passes real-world verification. That possession of a number alone guarantees successful fraud.

Why a cheap SSN can still cause expensive harm

The Social Security Administration warns that identity thieves can use an SSN and other personal information “to apply for loans and credit cards and open cellphone and utility accounts in your name.” Those accounts can create unfamiliar inquiries, unpaid balances, collection activity and credit-report disputes even when the thief paid little for the data.

Other consequences can involve tax filing, employment or government benefits. The harm is therefore downstream: a small illicit-market transaction can trigger hours of recovery work, denied credit, account closures or tax delays. The price of a listing says nothing about how difficult it will be to prove that an account or application was fraudulent.

How to tell whether your SSN may be exposed

A dark-web alert or a breach notice is not, by itself, proof that someone has successfully used your identity. Treat it as a prompt to check for concrete signs:

  • Cellphone, utility or collection notices for services you never opened.
  • A tax notice or rejected return suggesting that someone filed with your SSN.
  • Unexpected employer, benefit or government correspondence.

Reviewing evidence is more reliable than trying to assign a resale price to the number.

What to do after an SSN leak or suspected misuse

  1. Create an official report. Go to IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan for suspected identity theft. Save the report and every case number.
  2. Freeze your credit or add a fraud alert. Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to request a credit freeze or fraud alert. The bureau you contact must notify the other two when you place a fraud alert. Keep confirmation records and follow each bureau’s instructions for lifting or renewing the protection.
  3. Inspect your credit files. Obtain free reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Check accounts, balances and inquiries line by line, and dispute anything unfamiliar with the relevant creditor and bureau.
  4. Contact the IRS when tax fraud is possible. If someone may have used your SSN to file a return or claim a refund, contact the IRS and retain all notices and submission records.
  5. Document the recovery. Keep copies of the IdentityTheft.gov report, creditor letters, bureau confirmations and any police report. A dated log helps when several institutions ask for the same explanation.

Should you get a new Social Security number?

A replacement SSN is exceptional, not a routine response to a breach. SSA’s general process begins with reporting the theft and attempting to resolve the misuse. A new number is considered only in limited circumstances after persistent problems. It also does not erase the history associated with the old number, so freezes, alerts and record corrections remain important.

How to reduce future exposure

Before handing over an SSN, ask the organization why it needs the number, how it will be used and what happens if you refuse. SSA specifically recommends those questions; ask whether another identifier is acceptable and whether the number will be retained or shared.

Secure paper records that contain SSNs, account numbers or other sensitive data. The Federal Trade Commission advises closely guarding your SSN and shredding charge receipts, credit-application copies and similar documents. A cross-cut shredder is a practical way to make discarded records harder to reconstruct. Also avoid sending an SSN through an unverified message or form, and confirm the recipient before disclosing it.

How to evaluate future “dark-web price” reports

  • Evidence quality: distinguish an official notice or court record from a vendor estimate or an unverifiable listing.
  • Completeness: identify whether the item is an SSN alone or a full identity bundle.
  • Usability: ask whether the data is current and can pass an actual account-opening or verification process.
  • Downstream harm: consider possible credit, tax, employment, benefits, cellphone, utility and collection consequences.
  • Time and geography: check the listing date, country, marketplace and whether the data was already broadly exposed.

The useful conclusion is not that an SSN is worth a few dollars. It is that illicit prices are unstable and incomplete, while the cost of restoring an abused identity can be substantial.
