Use the octane grade specified on your fuel-door label or in the owner’s manual for your exact model year, engine and market. If the manual says regular is acceptable, premium normally will not add meaningful power, mileage or emissions benefits. If premium is required, treat the stated minimum as mandatory. If premium is recommended, a lower grade may be permitted, but the manual may warn of reduced performance or economy.
Start with your car’s own instructions
Do not choose gasoline by badge, turbocharger, engine size or what another version of the same model uses. Manufacturers can assign different fuel requirements to different engines, transmissions and model years. Check both places below before buying fuel:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Read the fuel-door label. It may state a minimum octane, identify premium as recommended, or specify another fuel restriction.
- Open the owner’s manual. Look for the fuel or “Capacities and specifications” section and match the exact model year, engine and market.
- Follow the strictest wording. “Premium required” is not the same instruction as “premium recommended.” If the label and manual appear inconsistent, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service department before refueling.
Ford’s U.S.-market manuals illustrate why a make-and-model guess is unsafe. One configuration operates on regular 87 octane but recommends 91 or higher for best overall performance, with the difference most noticeable in hot weather or while towing (manual example). Another requires at least 91 octane and warns that lower octane can reduce performance and cause severe mechanical damage (manual example). Those are configuration-specific examples, not a rule for every vehicle from that manufacturer.

What octane means
Octane is a measure of gasoline’s resistance to auto-ignition. During normal combustion, the spark plug starts a controlled flame that moves through the air-fuel mixture. Knock (also called pinging) occurs when some unburned mixture ignites spontaneously under pressure instead. Higher-octane fuel resists that unwanted ignition, which is useful when an engine’s compression, boost, ignition timing or calibration demands it. Octane does not mean the fuel is automatically cleaner, contains more energy, or is a higher-quality detergent product.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes retail pump grades using the antiknock index, written as (R+M)/2. Typical U.S. grades are:
| U.S. pump label | Typical octane | What the number tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | 87 | Baseline resistance to knock for engines designed for regular fuel |
| Midgrade | 89–90 | Intermediate resistance; useful only when the vehicle instructions permit or call for it |
| Premium | 91–94 | Greater resistance to knock for engines that require or can exploit it |
These are typical U.S. ranges, not a promise that every station stocks every grade. Other countries may use a different octane rating method or label the same fuel differently. Use the number and fuel specification required for your vehicle’s market rather than converting a foreign pump label by guesswork. EIA’s explanation of the U.S. convention is available at “Gasoline explained: octane in depth”.
Recommended Free Tools
Think of octane as an anti-knock requirement, not a quality ranking from “poor” to “best.” An engine designed around 87 octane has no unmet need that 93 octane automatically fills. Conversely, an engine calibrated for a higher minimum may not be protected adequately by a cheaper grade simply because the pump fuel looks and smells the same.
Required, recommended and regular: three different instructions
Regular unleaded specified
If the manual specifies regular unleaded, the engine was calibrated to operate on that minimum. Premium can still be compatible if it meets every other fuel requirement, but a higher number alone generally does not create a measurable advantage. AAA testing found no significant improvement in horsepower, fuel economy or emissions when premium was used in vehicles engineered for regular (AAA premium-fuel findings). Paying extra in this situation buys octane the engine does not need.
Premium recommended
“Recommended” means the manufacturer has identified a benefit under at least some conditions but may allow a lower grade. The manual controls the details: it may state that 87 is acceptable, specify a minimum for temporary use, or warn that power and economy will fall on regular. AAA’s 2019 Phase II report says some premium-recommended vehicles can safely use 87 when the manual permits it, although performance or fuel economy may be lower (AAA Phase II report).
Read the complete sentence, not just the word “recommended.” A manual that says “91 or higher recommended for best performance” is different from one that says “use 87 only in an emergency.” The allowed lower grade, operating limits and expected trade-off are vehicle-specific.

Premium required
“Required” establishes the minimum grade for normal operation. Use the stated octane every time, not only when towing or accelerating hard. AAA advises that failure to use premium in a premium-required vehicle could potentially cause engine damage and may affect warranty coverage (AAA Phase II report). If you accidentally fill with a lower grade, consult the manual or manufacturer for the correct remedy rather than improvising repeated refills.
Does premium pay for itself?
For a regular-engineered car, the answer is usually no because testing found no significant power, economy or emissions gain. For a premium-recommended car, the answer depends on the manufacturer’s wording, your driving and the local price gap; there is no universal break-even point.
AAA reported modest performance and fuel-economy improvements for premium-recommended vehicles in simulated demanding conditions such as towing, hauling and rapid acceleration, with less benefit in ordinary city or highway driving. The result is not a guarantee for every model. The U.S. Department of Energy likewise says the fuel-economy improvement for premium-recommended vehicles is usually too small to offset premium’s added price (DOE guidance, June 20, 2022).
To make a vehicle-specific decision, compare the factors in this order:
- Minimum permitted octane: eliminate any grade below the manual’s stated minimum.
- Manufacturer’s stated trade-off: note whether the manual promises best performance, towing capability or economy on premium, and whether it identifies temperatures or loads that matter.
- Your actual use: ordinary commuting places less demand on the engine than sustained towing, heavy hauling, steep grades or repeated full-throttle acceleration.
- Local price difference: record the per-gallon premium over the permitted lower grade at stations you actually use.
- Measured benefit: if you track fuel economy, compare several comparable tanks under similar weather, routes and loads. A single tank cannot establish a reliable difference.
A simple cost check is: extra cost per tank = gallons purchased × (premium price − lower-grade price). Premium must save enough fuel to exceed that extra cost before it can reduce your spending. DOE’s national guidance indicates that outcome is uncommon for premium-recommended vehicles, so do not assume a higher octane will pay for itself.
Fuel economy also changes with tire pressure, traffic, temperature, payload, route and driving style. Those variables can easily obscure a small octane effect. If you test two grades, use the same station when possible, reset the trip data, record gallons at the pump, and compare multiple tanks rather than relying on the dashboard estimate alone.
What happens if you use the wrong grade?
Premium in a regular vehicle
Using premium in an engine designed for regular is generally harmless when the fuel otherwise meets the vehicle’s specifications, but it normally provides no meaningful benefit. The higher number is resistance to knock, not a detergent upgrade or an energy boost.

Regular in a premium-recommended vehicle
If the manual explicitly permits 87, the car may run safely while delivering less power or economy. Modern engine controls can often reduce ignition advance when knock is detected, but the amount of adjustment and the resulting performance vary by vehicle. Treat the manual’s limits as controlling; do not generalize from one model to another.

Regular in a premium-required vehicle
Do not make this a normal practice. Lower octane can increase knock risk, reduce performance and, according to AAA’s guidance, potentially contribute to engine damage or warranty complications. If you have already filled the tank, consult the owner’s manual, roadside assistance or the manufacturer for model-specific instructions. Avoid hard acceleration, towing and high-load driving until you have confirmed the appropriate next step.
One accidental fill does not justify guessing at a remedy. The correct response can depend on tank size, the required octane, how much lower-grade fuel was added and the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not add unapproved additives or octane boosters as a substitute for the vehicle maker’s directions.
Knocking, pinging and unusual engine sounds
A persistent ping or knock is a symptom, not proof that the car simply needs a more expensive fuel. AAA’s fact sheet says that if an engine pings or knocks on regular—particularly in a premium-recommended vehicle—higher octane may resolve the sound, but the vehicle should still be checked by a reputable repair shop (AAA recommendations fact sheet). A Ford manual example similarly advises contacting an authorized dealer if heavy knocking occurs on the recommended grade.
- Stop escalating octane blindly. If the noise continues on the grade specified by the manual, changing grades repeatedly can mask a mechanical or control problem.
- Reduce engine load. Avoid full-throttle acceleration, towing and steep climbs until the cause is assessed.
- Check the manual’s troubleshooting section. Follow the warning-light and operating instructions for your exact vehicle.
- Arrange professional inspection. Persistent or heavy knock, loss of power, overheating or a warning light warrants prompt diagnosis.
AAA’s plain-language rule is: “Always follow the vehicle owner’s manual to determine which type of gasoline is recommended and/or required for your vehicle.”

Octane is separate from fuel cleanliness
A higher octane rating does not automatically mean cleaner fuel. Octane describes resistance to auto-ignition; detergent content and fuel-quality standards address deposit control and other characteristics. AAA and a Ford manual example mention TOP TIER detergent gasoline as a fuel-quality consideration, not as a reason to buy a higher octane grade. Choose a detergent fuel that meets your vehicle and local requirements, then select the octane specified by the manual. Do not substitute premium for a fuel-quality standard.
This distinction answers a common pump-side misconception: regular and premium can both meet the same detergent standard, while two stations selling the same octane can differ in additive packages. Check the fuel-quality guidance separately from the octane instruction.

How common are premium requirements?
DOE’s datasets show that premium instructions have become more common among new light-duty vehicle configurations, but the figures are not percentages of drivers or of all vehicles currently on the road. In 2024, DOE reported that 26.7% of model-year 2023 light-duty vehicle configurations required premium and 26.3% recommended it without requiring it. DOE explains that its “models” are vehicle records or configurations and that engine and transmission variations may be counted separately; the underlying Fuel Economy Guide data were accessed May 15, 2024 (DOE FOTW #1353).
A separate DOE report said the share of new models requiring premium rose from 16% in 2012 to 29% in 2018. That statistic applies only to the model data and years discussed in that report, not to today’s entire vehicle fleet (DOE FOTW #1243).
These numbers explain why checking the label matters, but they cannot tell you what an individual vehicle needs. A brand’s overall lineup may include regular-fuel, premium-recommended and premium-required configurations at the same time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regional and fuel-specification cautions
This guide uses U.S. pump labels and U.S.-market examples. Your manual may also limit ethanol content, identify a preferred fuel for high altitude or extreme temperatures, or specify a formulation required in your market. Those instructions are independent of the regular-versus-premium choice. A station’s available grades can vary, and a label’s octane number should not be treated as a universal international rating.
When buying a used or imported vehicle, identify the exact engine and market before relying on advice from an online forum, a previous owner or a different year’s manual. If documentation is missing, obtain the manufacturer’s current manual or contact an authorized service department with the vehicle identification number.
A practical pump-side routine
- Identify the minimum. Read the number printed inside the fuel door and confirm it in the manual.
- Check the wording. Separate “required” from “recommended,” and look for conditions such as towing or hot weather.
- Verify the fuel specification. Confirm any ethanol, reformulated-fuel or market-specific restriction before considering octane.
- Select a compliant grade. Buy the lowest grade that meets the stated minimum unless the manual recommends a higher grade for your present conditions.
- Keep symptoms separate. A continuing knock, warning light or power loss calls for diagnosis, not repeated changes at the pump.
A practical decision checklist
- ☐ Read the fuel-door label.
- ☐ Verify the owner’s manual for the exact year, engine and market.
- ☐ Record whether the wording is regular, premium recommended or premium required.
- ☐ Confirm the minimum octane and any ethanol or formulation limits.
- ☐ If premium is optional, identify whether your driving includes towing, hauling or frequent hard acceleration.
- ☐ Compare the actual local price difference with any manufacturer-stated benefit.
- ☐ Use detergent fuel as a separate quality decision; do not confuse it with octane.
- ☐ Treat persistent pinging or knocking as a diagnostic issue, not an invitation to keep increasing octane.
Bottom line for common situations
| Your manual says | Best default | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Regular unleaded | Buy regular | Premium normally adds no meaningful power, economy or emissions benefit. |
| Premium recommended; lower grade expressly allowed | Use the permitted lower grade for routine driving; consider premium for the conditions the manual identifies | Benefits may appear under demanding loads, while DOE says they usually do not repay the added cost. |
| Premium required | Use at least the stated premium minimum | Lower octane can reduce performance and may risk damage or warranty complications. |
| Persistent knock on the specified fuel | Seek diagnosis | Fuel changes alone are not a substitute for troubleshooting a continuing symptom. |
The correct gasoline is the one your vehicle’s own instructions specify—not automatically the cheapest grade and not automatically the most expensive one.

Is premium gas worth it in a regular car?
Usually not. AAA testing found no significant horsepower, fuel-economy or emissions improvement when premium was used in vehicles engineered for regular. Buy a compliant detergent fuel at the regular grade unless your manual says otherwise.
What is the difference between premium required and premium recommended?
Required means the stated premium octane is the minimum for normal operation. Recommended means the manual identifies a benefit but may permit a lower grade, sometimes with reduced performance or economy. The exact wording in your manual controls.
What happens if I use regular in a premium-recommended car?
If the manual expressly permits 87 octane, the vehicle may operate safely but can deliver less power or fuel economy. Follow the manual’s limits and use premium when it identifies demanding conditions such as towing or heavy acceleration.

Lower octane can increase knock risk and reduce performance, and AAA says repeated use could potentially contribute to engine damage or warranty complications. Consult the manual or manufacturer after an accidental fill and avoid high-load driving until you know the correct procedure.
Does premium gasoline contain more energy or detergent?
No. Octane measures resistance to auto-ignition; it does not automatically indicate greater energy content or cleaner fuel. Detergent standards are a separate fuel-quality question.
Can premium stop engine pinging?
Higher octane may resolve pinging on regular in some premium-recommended vehicles, but persistent or heavy knocking still needs professional inspection. Do not keep increasing octane to hide a mechanical or control problem.
How should I compare the cost of regular and premium?
Multiply the gallons you buy by the per-gallon price difference to find the extra cost per tank. Then compare any measured, repeatable fuel-economy change under similar conditions. DOE says the fuel-economy benefit for premium-recommended vehicles is usually too small to offset the higher price.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do U.S. octane numbers apply everywhere?
Not necessarily. U.S. pump labels use the (R+M)/2 antiknock index, with typical regular at 87, midgrade at 89–90 and premium at 91–94. Other markets may use different rating methods, so follow the specification for the vehicle’s market.
The Bottom Line
Check the exact vehicle’s fuel-door label and manual. Use regular when it is specified, use at least the stated premium when it is required, and treat premium as an optional, condition-dependent choice only when the manual permits a lower grade.
