(NYSE: HUM) from Market Perform to Outperform on October 12, 2026, and assigned a $520 price target. The firm’s more positive view is tied to a projected increase in the share of Humana’s Medicare Advantage members enrolled in plans rated four stars or higher—from 41% for 2026 to 95% for 2027.
What Raymond James changed
The October 12, 2026 report represents a two-step change: a rating upgrade and a higher valuation target. Raymond James moved HUM from Market Perform to Outperform and set a $520 target price. The report discusses Humana shares traded under the ticker HUM; the separate “Depositary Receipt” description in some versions of the headline is not independently clarified by the available reports.

The $520 target is above the reported $455.38 mean target, although the reports do not provide a contemporaneous HUM share price, so the implied percentage upside cannot be calculated from these figures alone.
The Medicare Advantage quality-rating catalyst
Raymond James based its upgrade primarily on the expected change in Humana’s Medicare Advantage membership mix. The firm projects that 95% of members will be in plans rated four stars or higher for 2027, compared with 41% for 2026—a 54-percentage-point increase.

That improvement matters to the earnings outlook because the firm views the higher-rated membership mix as reducing uncertainty around Humana’s longer-term recovery. Raymond James said the change de-risks the longer-term earnings recovery, lifts the floor under its 2028 earnings expectations and gives Humana more flexibility to invest in benefits or return capital to shareholders.
How the call changes Humana’s earnings outlook
Raymond James estimated that the rating improvement adds approximately $22 to its 2027–2028 earnings-per-share estimates. Investing.com reported a more specific revision for 2028: Raymond James raised its EPS estimate to $43.12 from $26.68, while leaving its 2026 and 2027 estimates largely unchanged.

The estimates indicate that the principal benefit is expected later in the forecast period rather than as an immediate 2026 earnings reset. The reports do not break the approximately $22 contribution into separate annual amounts.

Why the improvement may not be permanent
Humana management cautioned that some of the outperformance associated with quality ratings is not expected to recur. That warning limits how investors should interpret the upgrade: the 95% figure is a projection for 2027, not a guaranteed long-term membership mix or a permanent annual earnings increase.
Rank #3
The central question is therefore durability. Investors will need to see whether the four-star-plus mix remains elevated in subsequent rating cycles and whether the resulting earnings benefit persists after the portion management describes as nonrecurring fades. Until then, Raymond James’s higher 2028 EPS floor depends partly on an improvement that carries an explicit sustainability caveat.

What the upgrade means for investors
- Near-term earnings: The firm left its 2026 and 2027 estimates largely unchanged, so the call is not primarily a forecast of an immediate earnings surge.
- Longer-term risk: The projected 2027 membership mix is intended to make the recovery less risky and support a higher 2028 earnings floor.
- Use of potential excess capital: Raymond James identified flexibility to improve benefits, invest in the business or return capital to shareholders; it did not specify a new dividend, buyback or benefit action in the available reports.
- Key uncertainty: Management’s warning means investors should not automatically treat the quality-rating uplift as a recurring run-rate assumption.
Questions to monitor after the upgrade
- Does Humana actually reach the projected 95% four-star-plus membership level for 2027?
- How much of the estimated approximately $22 EPS benefit appears in reported results, and how much is attributable to one-time rating outperformance?
- Does the 2028 EPS outlook remain near $43.12 as later guidance and rating results become available?
- Does Humana use any resulting flexibility for member benefits, operating investment or shareholder returns?
- How does the $520 Raymond James target compare with subsequent analyst revisions and the $455.38 FactSet mean?
