For one-ticket exposure spanning rare earths, lithium, copper and other materials, Global X EART is the broadest match. Global X COPX is the straightforward copper-miner choice; Sprott LITP is a concentrated lithium-miner fund; Sprott REXC targets rare-earth companies outside China; and Sprott COPP offers focused copper-miner exposure with a stated physical-copper component. The right choice depends on the metal you want, how much concentration and mining-equity volatility you can tolerate, your geographic preference and the costs you are willing to pay.
These funds generally buy shares of mining or materials companies, not bars of lithium, copper or rare-earth elements. Company costs, mine development, financing, currency movements, regulation and political events can therefore make fund returns diverge sharply from the underlying commodity price.

What each critical-minerals fund actually owns
The fund mandate is the first filter. A diversified materials ETF can reduce the risk that one metal or project disappoints, while a pure-play fund gives you a much clearer view on one commodity and usually a bumpier ride.

Choose by the exposure you want
For one fund covering several critical minerals: EART
EART is the logical starting point when you want a single position that reaches beyond one commodity. Its stated universe includes rare earths, lithium, copper, graphite, cobalt and other materials. That breadth can soften the effect of a collapse in one market, but it also means a strong copper or lithium rally may have less impact than it would in a dedicated fund. You are buying a portfolio of companies with different mines, processing businesses and jurisdictions rather than a single commodity bet.
Its 0.59% expense ratio is the lowest among the published ETF ratios in this comparison. The trade-off is less precision: an investor seeking mostly rare earths or mostly lithium will receive meaningful exposure to other businesses as well.
For a broad copper-miner basket: COPX
COPX owns a basket of copper-mining companies and follows the Solactive Global Copper Miners Total Return Index. Its 40 holdings spread company-specific risk more than buying one miner, while retaining a clear copper theme. This is still an equity investment. A miner can underperform copper because of energy and labor costs, a delayed expansion, falling ore grades, a financing problem or a government intervention.
COPX is a better fit than EART when your investment thesis is specifically about copper demand and you accept the operating risk of copper producers. It is not a way to lock in the spot copper price.

For concentrated lithium exposure: LITP
LITP tracks the Nasdaq Sprott Lithium Miners Index and held 38 companies in the September 2026 report. Lithium is essential to many rechargeable batteries and energy-storage systems, but prices can move through severe supply-and-demand cycles. A pure-play fund magnifies both the upside when lithium markets tighten and the downside when new capacity arrives faster than expected.
Choose LITP only if you specifically want lithium-miner equities and can tolerate a concentrated theme. EART is the less concentrated alternative for an investor who wants lithium represented but does not want the entire position to depend on lithium economics.
For rare earths with an explicit non-China focus: REXC
REXC began trading on April 14, 2026. Its fact sheet lists 34 issuers, with 95.94% of the portfolio in rare-earth equities, and a 0.65% total annual expense ratio. The fund is designed for investors who want companies outside China-focused exposure.

A non-China focus can diversify geopolitical exposure, but it does not remove processing bottlenecks, permitting risk or dependence on a globally connected supply chain. REXC’s narrow theme and potentially smaller companies can also create larger price swings and wider trading spreads than a larger, broader ETF.

For a focused copper vehicle with a physical component: COPP
Sprott describes COPP as pure-play exposure to copper miners and physical copper, while its SEC prospectus says it tracks the Nasdaq Sprott Copper Miners Index before fees and expenses. It is therefore a more focused Sprott copper option than a multi-metal fund. Confirm the current prospectus for the precise allocation and expenses before investing, because the fund’s holdings and structure can change.
For copper without mine operating businesses: Sprott Physical Copper Trust
The trust holds substantially all assets in physical copper and reported a 1.40% management expense ratio for the period ended June 30, 2026. It avoids direct mine-operation risk, such as cost overruns or a failed project, but it introduces trust-specific considerations, storage and custody arrangements, and the risks of a commodity whose price can still fall. Its higher reported expense ratio also makes it materially different from the 0.59% to 0.65% ETF fees listed above.
Why critical-minerals demand matters—and why it does not guarantee returns
Demand projections explain the investment theme, not the result you will receive. Global X’s Charting Disruption ’26 projected that total demand for copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, rare-earth elements and other materials could rise 1.5 times, from 35,380 kilotons in 2024 to more than 52,000 kilotons in 2040. The same publication estimated a possible 33% gap between global copper demand and available supply by 2035.

Higher demand can encourage new mines, substitution, recycling and efficiency improvements. Those responses may arrive at different speeds, and a projected shortage can already be reflected in share prices. A fund can lose money even when the long-term demand story remains intact if companies issue shares, miss production targets or face a sudden commodity-price correction.

Mining equities are not the same as owning the metal
An ETF holding miners gives you indirect exposure through shareholders’ claims on businesses. Your return reflects at least five layers of risk:
- Operating costs: diesel, electricity, equipment, labor and processing costs can rise faster than the metal price.
- Project execution: a new mine or refinery can be delayed, redesigned or abandoned.
- Capital and dilution: companies may issue additional shares or borrow heavily to fund expansion.
- Currency: miners sell in one currency and pay costs in another, while the fund itself has its own trading currency.
- Government and political risk: royalties, taxes, export rules, environmental approvals and changes of government can alter project economics.
A physical-copper trust removes many company-specific risks but does not eliminate commodity volatility, storage arrangements or the possibility that the trust trades away from the value of its underlying copper. Neither structure is a guaranteed hedge against inflation or a substitute for a diversified portfolio.

Expense ratio is only the visible fund cost
The annual expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and reduces returns over time. EART publishes 0.59%; COPX, LITP and REXC each publish 0.65%; the physical copper trust reported a 1.40% management expense ratio for the stated period. COPP’s expense ratio is not stated in the cited materials, so obtain the current prospectus rather than assuming it matches another Sprott product.
Spreads, liquidity and portfolio size matter
Your purchase price is affected by the bid-ask spread, especially in a newly launched or narrowly traded fund. Before submitting an order, look at the live spread, average trading volume, assets and the number of holdings. A low annual fee does not compensate for repeatedly paying a wide spread on entry and exit.

Geography changes the risk you are taking
Read the country weights, not just the fund name. REXC explicitly excludes China-focused exposure. EART, COPX and LITP have global company portfolios, but their exact country allocations change and should be checked in the latest holdings file. Geographic diversification can reduce dependence on one government or currency; it cannot remove global refining concentration or commodity-cycle risk.
A practical selection process
- Write the intended exposure in one sentence. For example: “I want diversified critical-materials companies,” “I want copper miners,” “I want lithium miners,” or “I want physical copper.” If you cannot state the exposure, do not start with a ticker.
- Set a concentration limit. Decide how much of your portfolio can be in one commodity theme and how much loss you could withstand without selling in panic. A narrow fund should normally occupy less of a diversified portfolio than a broad equity holding.
- Read the latest prospectus and holdings. Verify the index, derivatives or physical holdings, country weights, number of securities, expense ratio and any change since the dates in the table.
- Check the trading screen. Compare the current bid-ask spread, volume and market price against the fund’s net asset value when available. Use a limit order when you need price control; the exact order options depend on your broker.
- Choose a review rule before buying. Recheck the thesis on a schedule, such as each quarter or after a material change in fees, mandate, country exposure or index methodology. Do not replace a written rule with a reaction to one day’s commodity move.
How to interpret performance
Historical performance is evidence of what happened, not a forecast. Sprott reported a 94.50% one-year return for its Critical Materials ETF in 2025. That unusually strong result cannot establish which fund will lead next, and it does not tell you whether the return came from commodity prices, valuation changes, currency movements or particular holdings.
When comparing funds, use the same period and look beyond headline return: volatility, maximum drawdown, spread, assets, geographic concentration and the behavior of the fund during a commodity downturn are equally important. Compare a mining-equity fund with other mining-equity funds; do not treat its return as a direct copper, lithium or rare-earth price series.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the ticker instead of the mandate: similar names can represent miners, processors or physical material.
- Assuming “critical” means scarce forever: recycling, substitution and new supply can change the balance.
- Ignoring China and refining: mine location is not the same as processing location.
- Using a thematic ETF as a complete portfolio: a single commodity theme can be highly cyclical.
- Chasing a past winner: a one-year return, including the 94.50% reported for 2025, is not a forward estimate.
- Skipping the latest documents: fees, holdings, assets and index rules can change after a fund page is published.
Which investor profile fits which option?
| Your priority | Closest match | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One position spanning several critical minerals | EART | Less direct exposure to any single metal |
| A diversified basket of copper miners | COPX | Company, country and operating risks remain |
| Maximum focus on lithium-miner equities | LITP | Greater sensitivity to lithium price cycles |
| Rare-earth equities while avoiding China-focused exposure | REXC | Narrow theme, newer fund and possible liquidity risk |
| Focused copper miners with stated physical-copper exposure | COPP | Confirm current allocation and fee details |
| Direct physical-copper trust exposure | Sprott Physical Copper Trust | 1.40% reported management expense ratio and trust/commodity risks |
Use the table as a starting point, not a ranking. The best match is the fund whose mandate, geography, costs and potential drawdowns fit your plan and time horizon.
