Indian Railways’ Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) is a 78-day payment for eligible non-gazetted railway employees. For the current FY 2025-26 announcement, the maximum is ₹17,951, and the Union Cabinet says it will be paid before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. The payment is normally sent through the same channel as salary, but the official order does not set one identical credit date for every railway unit.
The operative rules also explain who is excluded, how service interruptions affect the amount, when an employee can put some or all of the bonus into a State Railway Provident Fund (SRPF) account, and how an overpayment can be recovered.

What is the railway bonus for FY 2025-26?
The railway bonus is the annual Productivity Linked Bonus sanctioned under Railway Board instructions. The latest Cabinet announcement covers FY 2025-26 and reports approval for 1,140,770 railway employees. The government estimates the total financial impact at ₹2,009.61 crore. It describes the payment as an annual PLB made before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays.
The detailed Railway Board order currently available for the preceding financial year, FY 2024-25, sets the operative mechanics: PLB is equivalent to 78 days’ wages, subject to a wage ceiling for calculation, and is paid to eligible non-gazetted employees. Annual orders can change, so a later FY 2025-26 Railway Board clarification would take priority over an older circular on a conflicting point.

Who is eligible for railway bonus?
Eligible employee category
The standard group is eligible non-gazetted Railway employees. The Railway Board’s order expressly excludes all personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF). Gazetted employees are outside this PLB order because it is framed for the non-gazetted workforce.
Employees covered by qualifying-service rules
Eligibility is not determined only by being on the payroll at the moment of payment. The order applies qualifying-service conditions for the relevant financial year. It separately addresses employees who were suspended, left service, retired, died, or took leave during the year. Those events can change the admissible amount or require calculation under standing instructions rather than the normal maximum.
Part-time and nominal-payment workers
The broader bonus framework identifies part-time employees engaged on a nominal fixed payment among exclusions. A person should therefore check the appointment category and the applicable Railway Board instructions instead of assuming that every person working in a railway establishment receives PLB.

The order sanctions PLB equal to 78 days’ wages. When monthly wages exceed ₹7,000, the calculation treats wages as ₹7,000 per month. For an employee in the normal qualifying group, the stated maximum is ₹17,951.

| Calculation point | Official rule | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus period | 78 days’ wages | The number of days is fixed by the annual PLB order; it is not a discretionary amount decided by an individual office. |
| Wage ceiling | Wages above ₹7,000 per month are treated as ₹7,000 | Higher basic wages do not increase the PLB calculation beyond the ceiling. |
| Normal maximum | ₹17,951 | This is the stated maximum for the standard qualifying group, not a guaranteed amount for every employee. |
| Wages below the ceiling | 78 days calculated on the admissible wages | The amount is lower than the maximum when the employee’s admissible wages are below ₹7,000 or when qualifying-service rules reduce the payment. |
The ₹17,951 figure is therefore a ceiling for the normal case, not a promise that every eligible employee will receive that exact credit. Payroll must apply the order’s definition of wages and any service-based adjustment. A payslip can also show a different net amount if the employee has made an authorised provident-fund election or another lawful payroll adjustment.
Which service events can reduce or change the amount?
The Railway Board order gives the full stated amount to the normal qualifying group: employees who were not suspended, did not quit service, did not retire or die during the financial year, and were not on leave for which the admissible leave salary was below leave on average pay. Other cases are to be calculated under the standing PLB instructions.
Suspension
Suspension during the financial year is a specific condition requiring the office to apply the standing instructions. Do not assume that the full 78-day maximum follows automatically; ask the personnel or accounts section for the rule used for the suspension period.

An employee who quit service during the year falls outside the normal full-amount description. The admissible PLB, if any, must be worked out under the relevant qualifying-service provisions.

Retirement or death
Retirement and death during the year are also expressly identified as cases requiring treatment under the standing instructions. The family or employee should request the written calculation from the controlling office rather than relying on the ₹17,951 maximum.
Leave
Leave matters because the order distinguishes leave for which admissible leave salary was not less than leave on average pay. Where that condition is not met, the normal calculation may not apply. Keep leave records and the relevant salary statement if the amount needs to be checked.
When will the railway bonus be paid?
For FY 2025-26, the Cabinet announcement says PLB is paid each year before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. That is the government’s timing commitment, but it is not a single nationwide banking date.
The Railway Board’s detailed direction for FY 2024-25 says disbursement should be made “in the same mode as payment of salary, on priority basis.” In practice, employees should monitor the normal salary bank channel and payroll notifications. “Same mode” means the payment route used for salary; it does not necessarily mean that the bonus must arrive on the same calendar day as the monthly salary.

| Question | Answer under the orders |
|---|---|
| Is there one universal credit date? | No. The order requires priority disbursement but does not establish one date for every railway unit. |
| Will it use the salary account? | It should use the same mode as salary, subject to the unit’s payroll process. |
| What is the FY 2025-26 deadline indication? | The Cabinet announcement says payment is made before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. |
| What if colleagues are paid first? | Check the unit’s accounts or personnel section; staggered processing does not by itself prove ineligibility. |
Can the bonus be deposited into the Railway Provident Fund?
Yes, where the employee is an eligible State Railway Provident Fund subscriber. The PLB order says the subscriber may choose to deposit the whole or part of the admissible bonus into the SRPF account.
This is an optional deposit, not an automatic deduction applied to every employee. The order does not prescribe a universal percentage or state that payroll must transfer a fixed portion. An employee who wants the transfer should follow the payroll or accounts section’s election process and retain confirmation of the amount selected.
Is railway bonus taxable, and what deductions apply?
The cited PLB orders do not provide an income-tax withholding table, a universal tax rate, or a standard net-pay figure. They establish the gross PLB and the optional SRPF deposit, but they do not answer every employee’s individual tax position.

How to read the payslip
- Confirm the gross PLB amount and the number of qualifying days used.
- Check whether an SRPF deposit appears as an elected contribution rather than an unexplained deduction.
- Look for any income-tax or other statutory withholding separately identified by payroll.
- Compare the credit with the bank entry after allowing for processing time.
Can Railway recover an overpaid bonus?
Yes. An overpayment can be recovered under Railway Board’s general recovery instructions. The recovery guidance in RBE No. 64/2024 says a recovery order for an overpayment should be issued within one month from detection.
What the recovery review must examine
The authority must examine the applicable recovery instructions, whether serious negligence occurred, whether a rule or procedure defect caused the loss, and whether the case falls within an established exemption. The fact that the payment was called a bonus does not create an automatic waiver.
When can recovery be waived?
Railway Board may waive recovery up to ₹2,00,000 per individual with concurrence from Member Finance and approval from the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Cases above that amount continue to be referred to the Department of Expenditure with the required concurrence and approval. These are approval routes, not an employee’s automatic entitlement to cancellation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat an employee should do after receiving a notice
- Ask for the written recovery order and the calculation showing the amount, period and rule applied.
- Compare the calculation with the PLB order, qualifying-service records, payslip and bank credit.
- Check whether the notice was issued within one month of the office detecting the overpayment, while recognising that the underlying recovery instructions may contain additional procedural requirements.
- Submit a written reply by the stated deadline, attaching appointment, leave, retirement or other records relevant to the calculation.
- Request consideration under the applicable exemption or waiver instructions if the facts support it; do not assume that requesting a waiver stops recovery automatically.
- Keep copies of the notice, reply, acknowledgements and any revised salary statement.
If the error resulted from an office calculation or procedural defect, state that clearly and provide evidence. The approval authority still has to apply the government’s recovery rules, but a documented explanation is more useful than an informal verbal objection.
A quick checklist for employees
- Confirm that your post is non-gazetted and is not RPF or RPSF service.
- Check the financial year covered by the latest annual PLB order.
- Verify the admissible wages used, including the ₹7,000 calculation ceiling.
- Ask whether suspension, resignation, retirement, death or leave affects your qualifying amount.
- Monitor the normal salary payment channel before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holiday period.
- Review the gross PLB, any optional SRPF deposit and any separately identified statutory deductions on the payslip.
- If a recovery notice arrives, obtain the written calculation and respond within the stated time.
The Bottom Line
For FY 2025-26, eligible non-gazetted railway employees can expect a 78-day PLB, capped at ₹17,951 under the ₹7,000 wage ceiling. RPF/RPSF personnel and other excluded categories do not qualify under this order. Payment is intended before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays through the usual salary channel, an SRPF deposit is optional, and any overpayment recovery must follow Railway Board’s recovery and approval rules.
