First identify the program. In the United States, questions about railroad service months, earnings limits and payment status usually concern Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) unemployment or sickness benefits—not a discretionary railway bonus. For the benefit year beginning July 1, 2026, normal eligibility generally requires at least $5,162.50 in railroad earnings during calendar year 2025, with no more than $2,065 counted for any one month. If 2025 was your first year of railroad service, you must also have five creditable service months that year.
Use your annual Form BA-6, Certificate of Service Months and Compensation, as the primary eligibility record, then use myRRB through Login.gov to confirm that an application or claim was received, see approval dates and review payment history. Indian Railways has a separate Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) program; its 78-day wage formula and ₹7,000 wage ceiling do not determine U.S. RRB benefits.

What “railway bonus” can mean
The phrase is used for two unrelated systems. U.S. railroad employees normally use it when asking whether they qualify for RRB unemployment or sickness insurance. Those benefits are based on railroad compensation, credited service months and a defined benefit-year test. They are not a one-time employer bonus.
Indian Railways’ Productivity Linked Bonus is an employee-bonus order under a different government system, currency and eligibility framework. Applying one country’s threshold to the other can produce a completely wrong result, so confirm the governing agency before checking figures or submitting a claim.

U.S. RRB eligibility for the benefit year beginning July 1, 2026
The RRB’s current rules use calendar-year 2025 compensation to test normal eligibility for the benefit year that starts July 1, 2026. The following routes are distinct; meeting one route does not mean every other route applies.
| Route | Relevant earnings test | Service history or prior-benefit condition | What the rule establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | At least $5,162.50 in 2025 railroad earnings, counting no more than $2,065 in any one month | If 2025 was your first railroad-service year, at least five creditable service months in 2025 | Standard test for the July 1, 2026 benefit year |
| Extended | No separate earnings threshold is stated in the current fallback description | At least 120 cumulative service months (10 years) and normal benefits received in the benefit year ending June 30, 2026 | Available to workers who satisfy both the service-history and prior-benefit conditions |
| Accelerated | At least $5,375 in 2026 railroad earnings, excluding earnings above $2,150 in any month | A separate service-month or prior-benefit requirement is not stated in the current accelerated description | A fallback route tied to 2026 earnings |
These amounts are time-sensitive. A later benefit year can use different dollar thresholds, monthly caps or maximum rates, so do not carry the July 2026 figures into a future claim without checking the latest RRB guidance.
How the normal earnings test works
Start with the annual threshold
Add your railroad earnings credited for calendar year 2025. The normal threshold is $5,162.50. The figure is not simply an unrestricted annual total, because the RRB counts no more than $2,065 for any one month.

Apply the monthly cap
Review each month separately. If payroll shows more than $2,065 for a month, only $2,065 is counted toward this particular eligibility test. Earnings in other months are counted subject to the same monthly ceiling. Keep the underlying pay records because a high monthly amount can make your countable total lower than your gross annual total.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
For example, suppose your 2025 railroad pay totals $6,000, including $3,000 in one month and $3,000 spread over other months. The capped amount for the $3,000 month is $2,065; the remaining months are counted according to their own amounts. Your eligibility calculation therefore cannot rely on the $6,000 headline total alone.
Check the first-year rule
If 2025 was your first year with railroad service, the earnings test is only one part of normal eligibility. You must also have five service months in 2025. A worker with $5,500 in qualifying earnings but only four 2025 service months would not satisfy this first-year condition; a worker meeting the same earnings test with five credited months would meet it.
What counts as a railroad service month
The RRB defines a service month as a calendar month in which you had compensated railroad service or qualifying pay for time lost. It is a monthly credit, not a count of shifts or days on duty.
- There is no minimum amount of time worked required for a month to receive credit.
- There is no minimum compensation amount required for the month under this definition.
- A month can be credited even when the compensation is paid later than the month in which the service or qualifying time lost occurred.
Because payment timing can differ from the service month, compare the service-month record with payroll and personnel records rather than assuming the payment date identifies the credited month. The title phrase “service days” is therefore potentially misleading for U.S. RRB purposes: the agency’s eligibility record is organized around service months.

Use Form BA-6 to verify your record
The RRB normally mails Form BA-6 each June when you had creditable compensation in the prior calendar year. The form is the most direct way to see how the agency has recorded your service months and compensation.
- Find the latest form. Locate the BA-6 mailed in June for the prior calendar year. For the July 1, 2026 benefit year, the relevant earnings year is 2025.
- Read the eligibility field. The form indicates whether the reported record meets the applicable unemployment or sickness-benefit requirements.
- Count the service months. Confirm the months shown on the form, paying particular attention to the five-month first-year requirement if 2025 was your first railroad-service year.
- Reconcile compensation. Compare each month’s reported compensation with employer payroll statements, corrected wage records and documentation for qualifying time lost.
- Check the monthly cap calculation. For normal eligibility, no more than $2,065 from any one 2025 month can count, even if the payroll record shows a larger amount.
- Save supporting records. Keep the BA-6 and the payroll documents together in case you need the RRB to investigate a discrepancy.
The RRB specifically directs employees to determine eligibility by checking the Certificate of Service Months and Compensation. A commercial calculator cannot replace the agency’s BA-6 record.
Check an application, claim or payment in myRRB
Sign in to myRRB through Login.gov when you need to verify that the agency received a filing or to review payment information. The account is a status record, not a substitute for the BA-6 eligibility calculation.
| myRRB information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Receipt of an application or claim | Shows whether the filing has been recorded by the RRB rather than merely submitted from your side |
| Type and amount of the last five benefit payments | Lets you compare the payment history with your own bank records and claim periods |
| Claim period | Identifies the days or registration period to which a payment relates |
| Approval dates | Helps distinguish an accepted claim from one still awaiting a decision |
| Recorded direct-deposit information | Allows you to check whether the account details on file match the account you expect to receive benefits |
Practical login and status checklist
- Open myRRB and choose the Login.gov sign-in option.
- Use the Login.gov credentials associated with your RRB account and complete any requested identity verification.
- Open the unemployment or sickness-benefit area and look for the recorded application or claim receipt.
- Review the claim period, approval date and payment entries, including the last five payments.
- Compare the displayed direct-deposit information with your bank records. If it is unfamiliar, contact the RRB using the contact details in the official account and benefit guidance rather than trying to correct the record through a third-party service.
How much the RRB can pay in the July 2026 benefit year
The maximum daily benefit rate for the benefit year beginning July 1, 2026 is $103. The maximum for a two-week claim is $1,030. That two-week maximum reflects the applicable registration-period rules; it is not a guarantee that every claimant receives that amount.
Rank #4
Benefits generally cover qualifying unemployment or sickness days beyond four days in each 14-day registration period. Your actual payment depends on the qualifying days reported, the claim determination and any applicable RRB rules. Use the claim period and payment amount shown in myRRB to reconcile what was paid instead of multiplying the daily maximum by every day away from work.
Fallback routes: extended and accelerated benefits
Extended benefits based on service history
Workers with at least 120 cumulative service months, equivalent to 10 years, may qualify for extended benefits if they received normal benefits in the benefit year that ended June 30, 2026. Both the service history and the prior-benefit condition matter. The current rule description does not state a separate earnings threshold for this extended route, so do not invent one from the normal test.
Accelerated benefits based on 2026 earnings
The accelerated route uses 2026 railroad earnings. The stated threshold is $5,375, with earnings above $2,150 in any month excluded from the calculation. The current description does not state an additional service-month or prior-benefit condition for this route. Confirm how the RRB applies the route to your claim before relying on it.

- Review the extended route when you have a long railroad-service history and actually received normal benefits in the benefit year ending June 30, 2026.
- Review the accelerated route when your 2026 capped earnings can reach $5,375.
- Use the BA-6 and the RRB’s account records to establish what the agency has credited; do not infer qualification from years of employment alone.
Indian Railways Productivity Linked Bonus is a different program
If your question concerns Indian Railways, the relevant rule is the FY 2025–26 Productivity Linked Bonus order, not U.S. RRB insurance. The order describes a payment equal to 78 days’ wages for eligible non-gazetted employees and calculates the amount using a ₹7,000 monthly wage ceiling.

| Primary test | Credited railroad earnings and service months for the applicable benefit year | 78 days’ wages, calculated with a ₹7,000 monthly wage ceiling |
| Service requirement | Normal first-year rule: five 2025 service months; fallback routes have their own conditions | The cited order does not state a U.S.-style service-month test |
| Payment timing | Claim-period payments recorded in myRRB | The cited order specifies the formula; payment timing is not stated here |
| Verification | Form BA-6 and myRRB through Login.gov | Indian Railways’ order and your payroll or establishment records |
Do not use the ₹7,000 ceiling, 78-day formula or Indian payroll category to answer a U.S. RRB eligibility question. Conversely, a U.S. $5,162.50 earnings threshold has no role in calculating the Indian PLB.
Troubleshooting common eligibility and payment problems
BA-6 says you are ineligible, but payroll appears high enough
Recalculate using the monthly cap rather than the unrestricted annual total. Then verify whether 2025 was your first railroad-service year and, if so, whether at least five service months are shown. A late-paid compensation item may belong to a different credited service month, so compare the form with the underlying records.
The form shows fewer months than you expected
Check whether the missing month involved qualifying pay for time lost, whether compensation was reported after the service month and whether the employer’s record was corrected. Gather pay statements and service documentation before contacting the RRB using its official contact details.

Sign in to myRRB through Login.gov and look specifically for the application or claim receipt, not only a payment entry. A claim can be recorded before a payment is approved. If no receipt appears, use the contact information in the official RRB account and benefit guidance to ask whether the filing was received.
The payment amount does not match your estimate
Check the claim period, qualifying days and approval date in myRRB. The $103 daily rate is a maximum for the July 2026 benefit year, and the two-week maximum is $1,030; neither figure promises a payment for every calendar day in the period.
Direct-deposit details look wrong
