Yes, but not as a pure-play mortgage stock. Radian Group is now a diversified specialty insurer whose largest disclosed operating franchise remains U.S. mortgage insurance. The February 2026 purchase of Inigo, a Lloyd’s specialty insurer, added a second operating segment and changed the question investors should ask: how will earnings, capital generation and valuation split between Mortgage and Specialty?
What changed when Radian bought Inigo
Radian closed its acquisition of Inigo Limited on February 2, 2026, in a primarily all-cash transaction valued at $1.67 billion. Inigo writes specialty insurance and reinsurance through Lloyd’s Syndicate 1301. Starting with the first quarter of 2026, Radian reported two operating segments: Mortgage and Specialty.

That reporting change is more than a new label. Radian’s 2025 Form 10-K described the transaction as part of a transformation from a leading U.S. private mortgage insurer into a global, multi-line specialty insurer. The company now has two distinct underwriting engines: residential mortgage credit protection in the United States and specialty insurance and reinsurance written through the Lloyd’s market.

How much of Radian is still mortgage insurance?
The Mortgage segment operates primarily through Radian Guaranty and insures residential first-lien loans. The latest disclosed portfolio figures, as of June 30, 2026, show that mortgage insurance remains large enough to drive the company’s financial profile even after the Inigo acquisition:
#1 Best Overall
- Primary mortgage insurance in force: $284.0 billion.
- Mortgage risk in force: $75.4 billion.
“Insurance in force” is the outstanding principal balance covered by policies. “Risk in force” is the portion of that exposure Radian would be responsible for under its coverage terms, after taking account of policy structures such as coverage percentages. The gap between the two figures illustrates why both measures matter when assessing the mortgage operation’s scale and capital needs.
These figures do not make Radian a pure mortgage insurer again. They do show that the legacy mortgage business remains a major earnings and capital engine, rather than a small segment left behind after the acquisition.
What Inigo adds to the business mix
Inigo gives Radian access to specialty insurance and reinsurance distributed through Lloyd’s. Specialty underwriting can expose an insurer to different classes of risk, pricing cycles and geographic markets than a U.S. residential mortgage portfolio. It also introduces a separate underwriting result that investors must evaluate alongside mortgage-credit performance.

Radian’s filings establish the existence of the Specialty segment and its Lloyd’s platform, but the figures cited here do not provide a comparable June 30, 2026 specialty premium, risk-in-force or earnings number. Until subsequent filings show the segment’s contribution, investors cannot accurately describe RDN as primarily specialty by revenue or profit. The defensible description is a mortgage-insurance-anchored specialty insurer.
| Operating segment | Core activity | Disclosed scale in the cited 2026 figures | Investor lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mortgage | Private insurance on U.S. residential first-lien loans, primarily through Radian Guaranty | $284.0 billion primary insurance in force; $75.4 billion risk in force at June 30, 2026 | Housing credit performance, claims, reserves and capital generation |
| Specialty | Specialty insurance and reinsurance through Inigo and Lloyd’s Syndicate 1301 | No comparable figure stated for June 30, 2026 | Premium growth, pricing, loss ratios and integration execution |
Why the planned divestitures matter
Radian’s strategy is not simply “mortgage plus Lloyd’s.” The 2025 annual report says the company planned to divest its Mortgage Conduit, Title and Real Estate Services businesses, with completion expected no later than the end of the third quarter of 2026.
Those disposals would narrow the legacy platform around the highly profitable mortgage-insurance operation while Inigo supplies a second growth engine. Execution matters because the final company will depend on two businesses rather than the broader collection of mortgage-adjacent services Radian previously operated. Investors should verify in later filings which transactions have closed, what proceeds were received and how the retained mortgage operation is being reported.

Is RDN a mortgage stock, a specialty stock or both?
The answer depends on what “mortgage stock” means. If it means a company whose principal economic exposure is U.S. housing credit, RDN still qualifies because of the size of its insured mortgage portfolio. If it means a pure-play mortgage insurer with no material non-mortgage underwriting, it no longer qualifies after the Inigo closing.
For valuation, treating RDN as only one type of insurer can hide important differences. Mortgage insurers are commonly assessed through housing-market conditions, delinquency trends, claims, reserve adequacy and capital requirements. A Lloyd’s specialty platform brings additional questions about portfolio mix, catastrophe or specialty-loss volatility, reinsurance protections, pricing discipline and the timing of underwriting profits. The appropriate peer set and valuation framework may therefore become more mixed as Specialty grows.
Four questions investors should track next
1. How much profit comes from Mortgage?
Future quarterly filings should show segment revenue, underwriting results and operating income. The key trend is not just the mortgage portfolio’s dollar size, but its share of consolidated earnings and capital generation after Specialty is fully included.
Rank #4
2. Is Inigo growing profitably?
Watch Specialty premium growth together with loss and expense performance. Rapid premium growth without disciplined underwriting would not prove that diversification is creating value. Conversely, a smaller but consistently profitable Specialty segment could still materially change Radian’s risk profile.
3. How was the acquisition funded and what follows?
The purchase was primarily all cash, so investors should follow the effect on holding-company liquidity, debt, statutory capital and future capital returns. The relevant issue is whether the combined group can fund growth while preserving the resilience of the Mortgage segment.
4. Were the announced divestitures completed on schedule?
Radian expected to finish the Mortgage Conduit, Title and Real Estate Services divestitures by the end of the third quarter of 2026. Closing status, proceeds and any changes to segment reporting will clarify whether management is executing the concentration strategy described in the 2025 Form 10-K.

The most accurate shorthand for RDN
Calling Radian simply a mortgage insurer misses the Inigo segment and the company’s stated global strategy. Calling it simply a specialty insurer ignores a $284.0 billion mortgage-insurance portfolio and $75.4 billion of mortgage risk in force. “Diversified specialty insurer with a large mortgage segment” or “mortgage-insurance-anchored specialty insurer” captures both realities.
So, is RDN still a mortgage stock? It remains mortgage-led today, but it is no longer mortgage-only. The investment case will increasingly turn on the relative performance of Mortgage and Specialty, the cost and benefits of the Inigo integration, capital allocation after the all-cash purchase and completion of the planned divestitures.
