Verdict: Questrade is a legitimate Canadian investment dealer, not a scam. Questrade, Inc. is a regulated investment dealer and a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF). It offers self-directed investing through Questrade and professionally managed portfolios through Questwealth Portfolios.
That does not make Questrade risk-free. Investors still face market losses, foreign-exchange costs, trading restrictions, settlement delays, platform outages and the possibility of account-review delays. The useful question is not whether Questrade is real—it is—but whether its fees, tools and product range fit how you invest.
What Questrade is
Questrade is a Canadian online brokerage founded in 1999. Its main self-directed platform lets Canadian residents trade stocks, ETFs, options, mutual funds, bonds and other investments, depending on the account and security. The company also operates Questwealth Portfolios, a managed-investing service where portfolios are selected and rebalanced for clients.
These are different services. A self-directed Questrade account gives you control over security selection and order placement. Questwealth is closer to a robo-advisor: you answer risk and goal questions, deposit money and pay an ongoing management fee for portfolio management.

#1 Best Overall
Questrade is primarily designed for Canadian residents. Eligibility, account types and access to particular products can depend on age, province, tax status and regulatory requirements.
Is Questrade regulated?
Yes. Questrade, Inc. is a registered investment dealer and a CIRO member. It is also a CIPF member. Those are important distinctions between a regulated brokerage and an unlicensed website soliciting deposits.
Regulation means Questrade must follow Canadian securities rules covering areas such as client assets, account administration, identity verification, complaint handling, anti-money-laundering controls and order execution. It does not mean that Questrade guarantees returns or prevents a stock, ETF or option from losing value.
Before opening an account, check Questrade’s legal and regulatory pages and the CIRO member directory. Registration is worth verifying directly rather than relying on an advertisement, social-media account or search result using the Questrade name.

Eligible investment property held in an account at a CIPF member may be protected if the investment dealer becomes insolvent and client property is missing, subject to CIPF rules and limits. CIPF protection is not insurance against investment losses.
| Situation | What protection generally does—and does not—cover |
|---|---|
| Questrade becomes insolvent and eligible securities or cash are missing | CIPF may respond within its rules and coverage limits. |
| Your ETF falls 20% | Not covered. That is a market loss. |
| You buy an unsuitable option | Not covered. Trading losses remain yours. |
| Your account is hacked | Resolution depends on the facts, security controls, the account agreement and how promptly you report the incident. |
CIPF coverage should not be confused with CDIC deposit insurance. Brokerage accounts, bank deposits and cash products can have different legal structures and different protection schemes. Read the account agreement for the specific product instead of assuming every balance displayed in a Questrade account has identical coverage.
Questrade fees: the “low-cost” claim needs context
Questrade has historically competed on low commissions, particularly for ETF purchases and self-directed investing. But “low commission” is not the same as “free investing.” The total cost can include:
- Trading commissions on some stock, option, mutual-fund or other transactions.
- Options contract charges and exercise or assignment costs.
- Foreign-exchange conversion costs when trading U.S.-dollar securities from a Canadian-dollar balance.
- ECN or other transaction charges on certain orders.
- Market-data subscription charges for real-time or advanced data.
- Management fees and the underlying ETF management expense ratios in Questwealth portfolios.
- Transfer-out or account-transfer fees charged by Questrade or another institution, depending on the transaction.
- Interest on margin borrowing.
Fee schedules change, and promotional pricing can obscure the normal rate. Before placing a trade, open Questrade’s current Pricing page and check the exact security, account type, currency and order size. For a U.S. trade, compare the commission with the exchange rate applied—not just the advertised commission.
Foreign exchange is often the most important hidden cost
Canadian investors can lose more to repeated currency conversions than to a modest stock commission. If you convert Canadian dollars to U.S. dollars to buy a U.S.-listed ETF and later convert the proceeds back, the spread or conversion charge applies to the currency transactions. The cost can be especially noticeable for frequent trading or small recurring purchases.
Questrade supports U.S.-dollar balances in appropriate accounts, which can reduce unnecessary conversions when you already hold U.S. dollars. It does not make currency conversion free. Ask for the exact rate and fee before converting, and compare the result with alternatives such as journaling eligible shares between CAD and USD listings where permitted and appropriate.
What can you trade?
Questrade’s product range is broader than that of many app-first brokerages. Depending on eligibility and account type, investors can generally access:
- Canadian and U.S.-listed stocks.
- Exchange-traded funds.
- Options.
- Mutual funds.
- Bonds and other fixed-income products.
- GICs through available brokerage channels.
- Foreign-currency holdings and dual-currency investment accounts.
Availability is not unlimited. A particular security may be unavailable because of its exchange, liquidity, listing status, settlement requirements, account restrictions or Questrade’s own eligibility rules. Options and margin access require approval and are not suitable for every investor.

That broader range can also make the interface and pricing harder for a first-time investor to understand.
Account types
Questrade offers common Canadian registered and non-registered account types, including TFSAs, RRSPs, individual taxable accounts and margin accounts. Depending on current availability, investors may also find spousal RRSPs, RESPs, FHSAs and other specialized accounts.
Rank #3
Tax treatment matters more than the broker’s brand. A withdrawal from an RRSP can create taxable income and withholding tax. A TFSA withdrawal generally restores contribution room only in a later calendar year. A taxable account can create capital gains, dividend income and foreign-reporting issues. Questrade provides statements and tax slips, but it does not replace personal tax advice.
Trading platforms and usability
Questrade has offered a web platform, mobile app and more advanced desktop or browser-based tools for active traders. The exact names and features can change, but the general trade-off is consistent: more functionality usually means more screens, order settings and data terminology.
For a long-term ETF investor, the critical checks are simple:
- Can you find the exact fund and listing you want?
- Can you see whether the quote is delayed or real-time?
- Can you select the correct account and currency?
- Can you review estimated commission, FX conversion and buying power before submitting?
- Can you locate statements, tax documents and transfer information without contacting support?
Active traders should test order-entry and cancellation procedures with small amounts before relying on the platform. A market order can fill at a materially different price during a fast market. A limit order gives price control but may not fill. Stop orders have their own trigger and slippage risks.
Why some customers mistake Questrade for a scam
Transfers take time
A brokerage transfer is not the same as an instant bank transfer. An institution-to-institution transfer may take days or weeks, especially when assets must be transferred in kind, an account number is wrong, securities are proprietary, or the delivering institution rejects the request. A cash transfer can also be delayed by anti-fraud reviews or a required holding period.
Cash and buying power are different
After selling an investment, the amount available to trade may differ from the amount available to withdraw. Sale proceeds generally need to settle before they can leave the account. A recent deposit may also be subject to a hold. These different balances can look like missing money when they are actually unsettled or restricted funds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIdentity and source-of-funds checks
Canadian financial institutions must verify identity and monitor transactions. Questrade may ask for government identification, a selfie, banking documents or information about a deposit. A request for documents inside the authenticated Questrade process is not, by itself, evidence of fraud. Do not send passwords, one-time codes or identity documents to an unsolicited email address or social-media account.
Rank #4
Account restrictions and closures
A brokerage can restrict trading or close an account for regulatory, security, contractual or compliance reasons. The explanation may be limited, particularly where disclosure could interfere with a legal or fraud investigation. If this happens, ask how to transfer eligible assets and what documentation is required. Keep records of every message, reference number and requested deadline.
Security and unauthorized transactions
Use a unique password, two-factor authentication and a secure email account. Turn on account alerts, review statements and avoid logging in through links in unexpected messages. Questrade support should be contacted promptly if you see an unfamiliar login, withdrawal or trade.
Do not assume a brokerage will automatically reimburse every unauthorized transaction. Coverage depends on the account agreement, the investigation and whether the client protected their credentials and reported the problem promptly. Never approve a remote-access request from someone claiming to be Questrade support.

How to investigate a suspicious Questrade message
- Do not click the message’s link or call the number in it.
- Open the Questrade website by typing the address yourself or use the official app.
- Check recent activity, withdrawals, linked bank accounts and security settings.
- Change your password and enable two-factor authentication if necessary.
- Contact Questrade through its official support channel.
- Contact your bank and report the incident to Canadian fraud authorities if money or identity information was involved.
Who Questrade suits
Questrade is worth considering if you want a Canadian brokerage with registered accounts, U.S.-dollar functionality, a wider product range and more research or trading tools than a basic investing app. It can suit buy-and-hold investors, DIY retirement savers and experienced traders, provided they understand commissions and currency costs.
It may be a poor fit if you want completely frictionless app investing, instant access to every deposit, highly predictable all-in fees or a platform designed only for automatic recurring ETF purchases. A robo-advisor such as Questwealth is a different proposition from self-directed Questrade and should be compared on management fee, portfolio construction, tax features and service—not just brand recognition.

Start with Questrade’s formal complaint process and submit the issue in writing. Include your account type, transaction dates, security symbol, dollar amount, screenshots and the resolution you want. Do not include your password or full account credentials in ordinary email.
If the response does not resolve the matter, review the escalation options available for the product and province. Depending on the issue, these may include CIRO’s complaint process, the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI), arbitration or legal action. Keep copies of statements and all correspondence.

FAQ
Is Questrade a legitimate company?
Yes. Questrade, Inc. is a Canadian investment dealer, a CIRO member and a CIPF member. It is not a scam brokerage.
Is money in Questrade insured?
Eligible investment property may receive CIPF protection if a member dealer becomes insolvent and client property is missing, subject to CIPF rules and limits. CIPF does not cover market losses. Cash products and bank deposits can have different protection.
Does Questrade charge a fee to buy ETFs?
Questrade has historically offered commission-free purchases for many ETFs, but the current fee depends on the transaction and product. Check the official pricing schedule before trading. Currency conversion, management expense ratios and other charges can still apply.
Can I lose money with Questrade?
Yes. Stocks, ETFs, options, bonds and other investments can fall in value. Questrade’s regulatory status protects against certain dealer failures, not poor investment performance.
How long do Questrade withdrawals take?
Timing depends on the withdrawal method, account type, deposit history, settlement status and security reviews. Recent deposits and unsettled sale proceeds may not be immediately withdrawable.
Is Questrade safe for long-term investing?
It can be suitable for long-term investing if you use the appropriate account, diversify, understand fees and maintain strong account security. The broker cannot eliminate market or currency risk.
The Bottom Line
Questrade is legitimate, regulated and not a scam. Its advantages include a broad selection of Canadian accounts and investments, U.S.-dollar functionality and tools that appeal to both long-term DIY investors and more active traders. The trade-offs are less obvious pricing, foreign-exchange costs, settlement and transfer delays, and a platform that may feel more complex than a basic investing app.
Before opening an account, compare Questrade’s current commission schedule, FX process, data charges, transfer fees and account minimums with your actual investing pattern. For a Canadian investor who wants control and a wider product range, it can be a solid choice. It is not a guarantee against losses, account restrictions or service interruptions.
