Before hiring a CPA financial planner, ask for five things in writing: the exact scope of work, the professional’s license and planning credentials, every way the firm is paid, conflicts and disciplinary history, and the engagement terms. A CPA license confirms state-regulated accounting authority; it does not by itself tell you whether the person offers retirement, investment, estate, insurance or cash-flow planning. The right questions help you separate a tax-focused accountant from a planner whose service matches your decisions and complexity.
Start with the service you are actually buying
“CPA financial planner” is not a standardized description of one service. One professional may prepare tax returns and answer occasional planning questions. Another may build a comprehensive plan covering taxes, retirement income, investments, insurance, estate coordination and implementation. A title does not establish which work is included.

Ask what is included
Ask the planner to describe the planning areas covered, the tangible deliverables and the boundaries of the engagement. Use a question such as: “Which decisions will you analyze, what will I receive, and what is specifically excluded?”
Potential areas include:
- Income-tax planning and estimated-tax decisions
- Retirement accumulation and retirement-income planning
- Investment allocation or portfolio recommendations
- Estate, beneficiary and legacy coordination
- Insurance and risk-management analysis
- Cash-flow, debt and liquidity planning
- Business-owner, equity-compensation or executive-planning issues
Ask the planner to identify which items are advice, which are preparation services, and which require another professional. A comprehensive engagement can involve gathering information, analyzing it, developing and communicating recommendations, implementing decisions, monitoring progress and updating the plan. Those stages are described in the AICPA personal financial planning framework, but a particular firm may provide only some of them.

Ask who does each task
Clarify whether the CPA personally performs the work, whether another employee prepares the analysis, and whether outside professionals are involved. Ask:
- Which work will you refer to an attorney, insurance specialist, investment adviser or another tax professional?
- Who coordinates with my tax preparer, estate attorney, payroll provider or investment custodian?
- Who is responsible for collecting documents and following up on missing information?
- Who communicates recommendations, and who answers questions after delivery?
Ask about implementation, monitoring and updates
A plan that ends with a report may be very different from an ongoing relationship. Ask whether the firm executes account changes, prepares tax elections, coordinates beneficiary updates or merely gives you instructions. Confirm how often the plan is reviewed, what triggers an interim review, and when a change is considered part of the service versus a new engagement.
Useful wording is: “After I receive the recommendations, what will you do, what must I do, and what will cost extra?” Also ask what information and decisions the planner needs from you and how quickly you must provide them.
Verify the CPA license and planning credentials
Confirm the CPA status with the issuing state
CPAs are licensed and regulated by state boards of accountancy. Request the planner’s full legal name, the state or states that issued the license, license number if available, and current status. Check those details with the relevant state board before signing. A license that is expired, suspended or issued in a different jurisdiction may not support the services you expect.
State licensing confirms the person’s CPA authority; it does not guarantee a particular level of personal-financial-planning experience. Ask how many clients have needs similar to yours and how recently the planner handled them.
Understand CPA/PFS
CPA/PFS is an additional AICPA credential for CPAs who focus on personal financial planning. The credential is granted exclusively to CPAs and requires a valid, unrevoked state-issued CPA permit, license or certificate, along with the credential’s other requirements. Ask whether the planner currently holds CPA/PFS, when it was awarded, and whether the individual—not merely someone else at the firm—has it.

Match experience to your situation
Ask for examples of relevant work rather than relying on a credential alone. Your questions may include:
- How do you handle business ownership, partnership interests or a planned sale?
- What experience do you have with restricted stock, stock options or other equity compensation?
- How do you model retirement income, required distributions and tax-bracket management?
- How do you coordinate trusts, beneficiary designations and estate-tax issues with an attorney?
- Which services are outside your expertise, and who would perform them?
A credential shows that additional requirements were met; it does not prove that the proposed engagement covers every planning need.
Ask exactly how the planner and firm are paid
Request a complete compensation map
Ask for a written explanation of every payment connected to the relationship. The explanation should identify:
- What you pay directly to the planner or firm
- Whether the charge is hourly, fixed, retainer-based, asset-based or another arrangement
- Payments to a related company or affiliated professional
- Sales-related compensation from products or transactions
- Third-party costs such as account, fund, insurance, custodial or transaction charges
- Referral payments or other compensation arrangements
Ask for dollar amounts or calculation formulas, billing frequency, minimums, payment dates and whether fees continue during periods when no meeting occurs. “What might I pay beyond your quoted fee?” is often more revealing than asking only for the headline price.
Distinguish fee-only from fee-based
Compensation labels have specific implications. CFP Board guidance permits “fee-only” only when the professional and firm receive no sales-related compensation and related parties receive none in connection with professional services. “Fee-based” must be explained so that a client does not mistake it for fee-only.

Ask the firm to define its label in plain language: “Can you, your firm or a related party receive compensation from a product, referral or transaction connected to my recommendations?” Then ask for the answer in the written disclosures. A label by itself does not establish your total cost or eliminate conflicts; the actual services, payments and incentives matter.
Compare costs on the same basis
| Compensation question | What to obtain |
|---|---|
| Direct professional fee | Amount or formula, billing schedule, minimums and whether the fee is recurring |
| Investment or account charges | Asset-based fees, custodial charges, fund expenses and transaction costs, if applicable |
| Product compensation | Any commission, trail, bonus or other sales-related payment |
| Related-party payments | Payments to an affiliated firm or person and the service associated with them |
| Additional work | Rates or fixed charges for tax returns, projections, meetings, implementation or revisions outside scope |
Probe conflicts of interest
Ask for specific examples
“Do you have conflicts?” invites a generic answer. Ask instead: “What incentives in your business model could affect a recommendation I receive?” Follow with examples relevant to the proposed work:
- Do you or an affiliate receive compensation from investments, insurance, lending or other products?
- Do you receive payments for referring clients to attorneys, brokers, custodians or other providers?
- Do you or a related party provide custody, asset management, tax preparation or other paid services?
- Are there revenue, production or retention targets that influence recommendations?
- How do you avoid, disclose and manage those incentives?
Under CFP Board standards, a CFP professional must avoid conflicts or fully disclose material conflicts, obtain informed consent and properly manage them. Disclosure does not remove the duty to act in the client’s best interests. Those standards apply to CFP professionals; do not assume that every CPA is bound by CFP Board standards merely because the person is a CPA.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Read the conflict language, not just the summary
Ask for the firm’s written conflict disclosures before deciding. Look for the parties involved, the compensation that could result, the recommendations affected and the steps used to mitigate the conflict. If the explanation is vague, ask the planner to rewrite it in a way you can evaluate: who gets paid, by whom, for what and when.
Check public professional history
Verify discipline with the relevant regulator
Ask the planner to identify any public disciplinary history and to provide the official pages where you can check it. CFP Board has a public enforcement process and ethics materials address disclosure of public discipline for CFP professionals. CPA licensing and state-board disciplinary information are handled by the state board that issued the license.
There is no single all-purpose public database that covers every CPA, financial adviser, broker and other professional in every jurisdiction. First identify which registrations and services apply to the proposed engagement, then check each relevant regulator. Ask the planner which regulatory records a prospective client should review.

Resolve discrepancies before signing
If a directory shows a different name, license status or firm affiliation, pause the hiring process. Ask for an explanation and updated documentation. Do not rely on a screenshot, an old biography or a verbal assurance when an official record can be checked.

Read the engagement letter line by line
Do not treat the engagement letter as paperwork to sign after the “real” conversation. It is the document that should control what each side must do. Compare it with your notes from the introductory meeting.
Confirm these terms
- Scope and limitations: Planning areas covered, exclusions, assumptions and deliverables.
- Service period: Start date, end date, renewal terms and whether the relationship is ongoing.
- Fees and other costs: Amounts, formulas, billing dates, late charges and pass-through expenses.
- Client responsibilities: Documents, deadlines, decisions, accuracy of information and access authorizations.
- Implementation: Which recommendations the firm executes, which you execute and whether implementation is optional or separately billed.
- Monitoring and updates: Review cadence, communication channels, triggers for updates and charges for substantial changes.
- Termination: Notice period, refunds, outstanding fees, transfer of records and what happens to unfinished work.
- Conflicts and privacy: Disclosures, consent procedures, information sharing and data-security commitments.
CFP Board sample engagement letters can illustrate topics to address, but they do not replace the firm’s contract or required regulatory documents such as Form ADV or Form CRS where applicable. Read the documents that actually govern your relationship.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ask how information becomes advice
Understand the fact-finding process
Ask what information the planner will collect before making recommendations. A serious process should address income, spending, assets, liabilities, taxes, insurance, retirement goals, estate documents, risk tolerance, time horizons and constraints relevant to your situation. Ask which assumptions the planner will use and how you can correct incomplete or outdated information.
Ask how recommendations are prioritized
Request an explanation of the order in which recommendations will be considered. For example, will the planner address emergency liquidity and high-cost debt before investment changes? How will tax consequences, risk, liquidity and implementation effort be weighed? Ask what alternatives were rejected and why.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAsk what happens when life changes
Clarify how the plan responds to a job change, sale of a business, inheritance, divorce, disability, market loss or change in tax law. Ask whether the planner models scenarios, documents assumptions and provides a process for updating recommendations. The AICPA framework includes monitoring and updating, but the engagement letter should state whether and how your firm performs those activities.

Use a structured meeting checklist
Bring this checklist to an introductory meeting and record the answers rather than relying on memory:
- What exact planning questions will this engagement answer?
- What deliverables will I receive, and what is excluded?
- Who performs the work and coordinates with my other professionals?
- Will you implement recommendations, monitor progress and update the plan?
- Which state issued your CPA license, and is it current?
- Do you hold CPA/PFS or another planning credential, and what experience matches my needs?
- How are you, your firm and related parties compensated?
- What product, account, referral or third-party costs could I incur?
- Could anyone connected with the firm receive sales-related compensation?
- What conflicts could affect my recommendations, and how are they managed?
- Where can I check your public license and disciplinary records?
- Can I review the complete engagement letter and disclosures before committing?
Pay attention not only to the answers but also to whether the planner answers directly, supplies documents promptly and identifies limits without being pressed.
Compare finalists on the same five axes
When two or more candidates remain, use identical questions and compare the written answers. The lowest quoted fee is not necessarily the lowest total cost if important implementation, tax or monitoring work is excluded.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to compare | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Planning areas, exclusions, deliverables, implementation, monitoring and update cadence | Broad promises with no written deliverables |
| Relevant expertise | Current CPA status, CPA/PFS or other credentials, and experience with needs like yours | Credential names without examples of relevant work |
| Compensation and conflicts | Total direct and indirect costs, payment sources, related-party payments and mitigation steps | Unexplained labels or reluctance to disclose incentives |
| Engagement terms | Responsibilities, service period, limits, implementation duties and exit terms | Pressure to sign before receiving the contract |
| Professional history | Official license and disciplinary records for the services offered | Inconsistent names, affiliations or license information |
When to pause or walk away
Pause the hiring decision if the planner will not provide a written scope, compensation explanation or engagement letter. Other serious warning signs include an invalid or unverifiable license, pressure to transfer assets before you understand the service, evasive answers about commissions or related parties, promises of guaranteed outcomes, and recommendations that arrive before the planner has gathered enough information.
A planner can be competent and still be a poor fit if the engagement excludes the work you need, requires you to implement complex steps alone or provides no update process. Hiring is a matching decision: the professional’s expertise, incentives, service model and documentation must fit your goals.
Make the decision only after the documents match
Choose the candidate whose written scope, qualifications, compensation disclosures, conflict explanation and engagement terms agree with what was discussed. Verify current credentials and regulatory records immediately before signing, because licenses, affiliations and firm offerings can change. Keep the signed agreement, disclosures, fee schedule and copies of the records you checked. If a material term is missing or unclear, ask for a revised document rather than relying on a promise made in the meeting.
