Short answer: quantum-computing shares are high-risk, long-duration technology investments, not ordinary growth stocks. A large physical-qubit number does not prove commercial usefulness. Logical qubits, error rates, gate fidelity, correction overhead, performance on paying customers’ workloads, recurring revenue, cash runway and dilution are more informative. Independent forecasts place general-purpose fault-tolerant machines far in the future, while company roadmaps are conditional engineering targets that may slip or fail.
This guide explains how to evaluate the technology, compare public companies, interpret timelines and judge whether a valuation is supported by evidence rather than promotional market-size estimates.

What quantum-computing investors are actually buying
A quantum processor uses quantum bits, or qubits, to manipulate probabilities in ways that can accelerate particular algorithms. That does not make it a faster replacement for every classical computer. The commercial question is narrower: can a system solve a defined customer problem with a useful combination of accuracy, speed, cost and repeatability?
Most current machines are noisy intermediate-scale systems. Their physical qubits lose information through decoherence and imperfect control. Error correction can combine many unreliable physical qubits into one more reliable logical qubit, but the overhead can be enormous. As Rigetti Computing wrote in its 2024 Form 10-K, “Useful quantum computers will need not only a large number of qubits, but also high-quality qubits.”

For investors, this creates two separate assets to value:
- Technology optionality: the possibility that a company reaches a scalable, fault-tolerant architecture.
- Current business: revenue from cloud access, systems, services, government work and production applications before fault tolerance arrives.
The first can justify a venture-style risk allocation. The second determines whether the company can survive long enough to reach the opportunity without repeated dilutive financing.
When will quantum computing be useful?
“Useful” has several meanings, and each has a different timeline.

Near-term, narrow usefulness
Companies can sell cloud access, consulting, research contracts and specialized optimization experiments before fault-tolerant computing. D-Wave’s 1H26 presentation says it has more than 100 customers, more than 65% of revenue from commercial customers and more than 37% of quantum-computing-as-a-service revenue from business applications in production. These are management-reported figures, so an investor should seek customer retention, workload volume and economic results rather than treating customer counts as proof of broad advantage.
Fault-tolerant usefulness
Fault tolerance means logical operations remain reliable through active error correction. A forecasting study that created a “generalized logical qubit” index from physical-qubit counts and gate-error rates assigned less than 5% confidence, under generally optimistic assumptions, to a proof-of-concept fault-tolerant superconducting computation before 2026. The same study assigned less than 5% confidence to an RSA-2048-capable quantum device before 2039. Those are probabilistic forecasts, not deadlines.
Rigetti’s 2024 Form 10-K says large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing would likely require 10,000 to 1,000,000 physical qubits and anticipates the beginning of that phase roughly a decade away. D-Wave’s 2026 presentation gives a conditional gate-model roadmap of 17 physical qubits in 2026, 49 in 2027, 181 in 2028, 10 logical qubits in 2030 and 100 logical qubits in 2032, with projected error-reduction factors above 2,000 times. These are company targets, not independently verified outcomes.

Why qubit count is an inadequate investment metric
Qubit totals are easy to advertise and difficult to compare. A physical qubit is a hardware element; a logical qubit is an error-corrected computational unit. Two systems with the same physical count can have radically different useful capacity because of connectivity, coherence, control quality and software compilation.
| Metric | What it measures | Questions an investor should ask |
|---|---|---|
| Physical qubits | Raw hardware elements | Are they all available simultaneously, and are they connected in a useful topology? |
| Logical qubits | Error-corrected computational units | What logical error rate, code and circuit length were demonstrated? |
| Two-qubit gate fidelity | Accuracy of an operation involving two qubits | Is the figure a median or best case, which gate was tested, and was the test internal? |
| Error-correction overhead | Physical qubits required per logical qubit | How does overhead change as the target logical error rate becomes stricter? |
| Circuit depth and time-to-solution | How much computation can run before errors dominate | Was performance measured on a customer workload against a classical baseline? |
| Algorithmic qubits (#AQ) | A task-oriented capacity measure when defined consistently | Which representative algorithms and entangling-gate requirements determine the number? |
IonQ’s 2024 Form 10-K describes #AQ as a task-oriented metric linked to representative algorithms and entangling-gate requirements. It is useful only when the definition, workload and calculation are disclosed consistently across periods and companies.
Technical metrics that deserve priority
Logical error rate
Ask how often a logical operation fails after error correction, not merely how many physical components exist. A credible disclosure identifies the code, syndrome-extraction cycle, circuit length, confidence interval and whether the result was reproduced outside the company.
Two-qubit fidelity
Two-qubit operations usually introduce more errors than single-qubit operations and can become the bottleneck in useful algorithms. Rigetti’s 2024 Form 10-K reports an 84-qubit Ankaa-3 system, 99.0% median two-qubit iSWAP fidelity and 99.5% median fSim fidelity from internal testing. Those figures are meaningful only with their test protocols and should not be compared directly with another company’s best-case result measured using a different gate or statistic.

Workload performance
The practical test is time-to-solution and total cost on a defined problem. A benchmark should state circuit size, compilation settings, number of repetitions, classical comparison, data-transfer time and whether the customer achieved a business result. A laboratory score without a workload does not establish an economic advantage.
Reproducibility
Prefer results that customers, academic groups or independent laboratories can reproduce through an accessible interface. Internal demonstrations can be valuable engineering evidence, but they carry more verification risk than independently repeated experiments.
Comparing architectures and companies
Do not rank IonQ, Rigetti and D-Wave on a single leaderboard. Their architectures, target workloads and commercial models differ, so comparison must be normalized.
| Comparison axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Architecture and workload | Gate-model or annealing approach, connectivity, use cases and algorithm assumptions. |
| Independent logical performance | Logical-qubit count, logical error rate, code details and outside replication. |
| Gate quality | Two-qubit fidelity by gate type, median versus best case, protocol and date. |
| Customer performance | Time-to-solution, classical baseline, production status and customer return on investment. |
| Revenue quality | Recurring cloud revenue versus one-off contracts, grants or research agreements. |
| Financial durability | Cash, operating burn, runway, capital intensity, financing plans and dilution. |
| Roadmap execution | Milestones delivered on time, revisions to definitions and explanations for slippage. |
IonQ
IonQ’s investor materials claim 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity and more than 1,200 patents granted and pending. The same page cites a third-party estimate of up to $2 trillion in potential economic value by 2035. These are company-presented technology and market claims, not realized revenue or a forecast of IonQ sales. Verify how fidelity is defined and whether patent counts translate into defensible operating capability.
Rigetti
Rigetti reports cloud access since 2017 and quantum-processing-unit sales beginning in 2023. Its 2024 Form 10-K reports the Ankaa-3 specifications above and warns that it may need additional capital sooner than planned if assumptions change. That warning makes cash use, financing terms and dilution as important as processor improvements.
D-Wave
D-Wave’s 1H26 presentation reports more than 100 customers, over 65% of revenue from commercial customers and over 37% of quantum-computing-as-a-service revenue from business applications in production. Because these are management-reported percentages, examine the definitions of “commercial,” “production” and revenue recognition, plus customer concentration and renewal rates.

McKinsey’s 2025 Quantum Technology Monitor estimates that quantum-computing companies earned $650 million–$750 million in 2024. That industry total is modest relative to promotional opportunity estimates. IonQ’s 2024 Form 10-K cites third-party consulting estimates of $50 billion in total government and private investment in quantum technology and up to $2 trillion in economic value from quantum computing over the next ten years. Neither figure is company revenue; both describe a broad ecosystem or potential value pool.

Cash runway and burn
Calculate months of runway using unrestricted cash divided by recent quarterly operating cash burn, then stress the result for slower bookings, higher fabrication costs and delayed milestones. A company that must raise capital before proving commercial demand can suffer dilution even if its science improves.
Capital intensity
Superconducting systems require cryogenics, control electronics, fabrication capacity and specialized engineering. Trapped-ion and other approaches have different equipment and scaling constraints. Cloud availability, component supply and scarce talent can delay deployments or raise costs.
Dependence on partners
Hyperscaler distribution, government contracts and university relationships can accelerate adoption but also concentrate bargaining power. Review what happens if a major partner changes its quantum strategy, reduces cloud promotion or replaces a grant with a competitive procurement process.

Valuation and dilution
Large total-addressable-market numbers can support an optimistic narrative without supporting today’s share price. Model several outcomes: technical success with strong margins, delayed commercialization requiring multiple raises, and technical failure with only services revenue remaining.

A practical due-diligence process
- Define the claim. Write down whether you are evaluating near-term services revenue, a processor milestone or long-term fault tolerance.
- Normalize the technical evidence. Put gate type, fidelity statistic, error model, workload, circuit depth and test date in the same spreadsheet for every company.
- Separate physical and logical qubits. Record conversion overhead and the target logical error rate instead of combining the counts.
- Check independent replication. Discount results that are internal, best-case or impossible to reproduce through an accessible system.
- Audit revenue quality. Identify recurring usage, production workloads, customer concentration, backlog and retention.
- Stress the balance sheet. Estimate runway, likely capital needs, dilution and the effect of a two-year roadmap delay.
- Compare promises with history. Track each dated milestone, the original definition, delivery date and any later redefinition.
- Set a position limit. Treat the investment as speculative until both technical and commercial evidence become durable.
Major risks and red flags
- Roadmap slippage: IonQ’s filings say milestones depend on advances that may take longer than expected or prove impossible.
- Metric gaming: a higher qubit total can hide poor fidelity, limited connectivity or no logical-qubit demonstration.
- Error-correction overhead: useful machines may require orders of magnitude more physical than logical qubits.
- Commercial concentration: a few contracts can create volatile revenue and weak negotiating power.
- Financing risk: Rigetti explicitly notes it may seek additional capital even when current resources appear sufficient.
- Infrastructure constraints: cryogenics, electronics, fabrication, cloud uptime and talent can limit scaling.
- Market-size anchoring: potential economic value is not a forecast of sales, margins or shareholder returns.
Investor FAQ
Is quantum computing a good investment?
It can be appropriate only as a speculative, long-horizon allocation that you can afford to lose. The sector combines unproven technical milestones, uncertain timing, financing needs and volatile valuations.
How many qubits matter?
There is no universal threshold. Logical-qubit count, logical error rate, gate fidelity, correction overhead and performance on a customer workload matter more than physical count alone.
Can I identify the company with the best technology?
Not reliably from a single headline metric. Compare equivalent fidelity definitions, logical performance, workload results and independent replication, then assess whether the balance sheet can fund the roadmap.

Does current revenue prove quantum advantage?
No. Revenue proves that someone paid for a product or service. It does not by itself show that a quantum system beats classical alternatives on a valuable task.
