Yes. If you are at least 70½ on the distribution date, an IRA trustee can send money directly to an eligible charity as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). The amount is generally excluded from income and counts toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) for that year. You cannot receive the money first, exceed the annual QCD exclusion, or claim the excluded amount again as an itemized charitable deduction.
What a qualified charitable distribution does
A QCD is a payment from an IRA made directly by the IRA trustee to an eligible charitable organization. The owner does not take possession of the funds. When every rule is met, the distribution is not included in adjusted gross income and can satisfy part or all of the owner’s RMD.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The Internal Revenue Service summarizes the RMD treatment in Publication 590-B: “A QCD will count towards your required minimum distribution.” That benefit is separate from the charitable deduction rules: an amount excluded as a QCD cannot also be deducted as a charitable contribution.

- You must be at least 70½ on the date the distribution is made. This threshold applies even though current RMD starting ages are generally later.
- The payment must come from an IRA covered by the QCD rules. Ongoing SEP IRA and SIMPLE IRA accounts are excluded in the cited IRS guidance; ask the custodian about an account’s status before requesting a transfer.
- The recipient must be an eligible charitable organization. A payment to an individual, donor-advised fund, supporting organization or other nonqualifying recipient does not receive QCD treatment under the general rule.
- The trustee must pay the charity directly. A check or electronic transfer sent to you first is normally an ordinary IRA distribution, even if you later donate the same cash.
Why the income exclusion matters
A direct QCD keeps the excluded amount out of income instead of adding it to the taxable IRA distribution reported for the year. That can be useful even when you do not itemize deductions, because the QCD exclusion does not depend on claiming itemized charitable gifts. It may also help you meet an RMD without increasing the income figure used elsewhere on your tax return.

How a QCD satisfies an RMD
An RMD is the minimum amount that must generally be withdrawn from a retirement account each year once the applicable starting age is reached. Under current rules, an owner who reaches age 73 generally has until April 1 of the following year to take the first RMD. Later RMDs are generally due by December 31. Deferring a first RMD can therefore create two required distributions in the following calendar year.
A QCD counts only when the direct trustee-to-charity transfer is completed in the applicable year or within the deadline that applies to the RMD. A request submitted before December 31 is not enough if the custodian does not complete the payment until the next year. Build in processing time, especially around holidays.
Applying a QCD to the required amount
You can direct a QCD for less than, equal to or more than your RMD, subject to the annual exclusion. The portion completed during the year counts toward that year’s RMD. If the QCD is smaller than the RMD, you must still take the balance through another qualifying distribution. If it is larger, the excess can remain an excluded charitable distribution as long as the total does not exceed the annual QCD limit and all other requirements are met.

Annual QCD limits
The exclusion is capped per IRA owner per calendar year and is adjusted for inflation. The figures below are year-specific; confirm the applicable IRS publication or filing instructions before acting.
| Tax year | Annual excludable QCD amount | Qualification of the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $108,000 | IRS amount for 2025 |
| 2026 | $111,000 | Amount shown on the IRS 2026 adjustment worksheet published in 2025; verify later updates before filing |
Any amount above the applicable annual exclusion is generally included in income like another IRA distribution. The cap is not a per-charity allowance, so payments to several organizations are combined when measuring the owner’s annual total.
How to complete a QCD
- Confirm eligibility. Check your age on the actual distribution date, identify the IRA being used and ask whether it is an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA. Calculate the RMD for each relevant account and identify how much you want sent to charity.
- Verify the recipient. Obtain the charity’s legal name, mailing address and payment instructions. Confirm that it is an eligible organization and that it can provide a contemporaneous written acknowledgment.
- Use the custodian’s QCD process. Request a distribution payable to the charity, not to you. Some custodians require their own QCD form, a letter of instruction or a check mailed to the organization. Follow the custodian’s exact payee and delivery requirements.
- Allow processing time. Ask when the payment will be issued and when the charity will receive it. A transaction that crosses December 31 may count in the following tax year, regardless of when you started the paperwork.
- Keep proof from both sides. Retain the custodian request, confirmation of the amount and completion date, the year-end Form 1099-R and the charity’s written acknowledgment. The acknowledgment should identify the date and amount and state whether any goods or services were provided.
- Reconcile the RMD. Compare the completed QCD with the year’s RMD calculation. Arrange an additional IRA distribution if the QCD did not cover the required amount.
- Report the transaction. Use the Form 1040 instructions for the tax year, and keep the supporting records with your tax file.
Reporting a QCD on your tax return
Form 1040
IRS taxpayer guidance says to report the full IRA distribution on Form 1040, line 4a. When the entire distribution is a QCD, enter zero on line 4b and write “QCD” next to the line. The form reports the distribution even though the qualifying amount is excluded from taxable income.

For a partial QCD or a year in which you took other IRA distributions, use the Form 1040 instructions to determine the taxable amount. Do not simply assume that every IRA distribution shown on a Form 1099-R is excluded.

For tax year 2026, the Form 1099-R instructions add optional box 7a code Y for a QCD. The code can help identify the transaction, but it does not replace your responsibility to verify the amount, direct-payment route and charitable eligibility. Review the form when it arrives and ask the custodian to correct material errors.
IRA basis and Form 8606
If an IRA contains nondeductible contributions, only the portion that would otherwise be includible in income can be excluded as a QCD. Basis calculations can make the taxable and nontaxable portions less obvious. Form 8606 may be required when basis or other IRA distributions are involved. Keep prior Forms 8606 and contribution records available rather than relying only on the custodian’s year-end statement.

Direct QCD versus taking the RMD and donating cash
| Issue | Direct QCD | Take IRA distribution, then donate |
|---|---|---|
| Payment path | IRA trustee pays the eligible charity directly | IRA pays you; you make a separate charitable payment |
| RMD credit | Qualifying amount counts toward that year’s RMD | The IRA distribution itself satisfies the RMD; the later donation does not change that distribution |
| Income treatment | Qualifying amount is excluded from income, subject to the annual cap and other rules | Distribution is generally taxable unless another exclusion applies |
| Charitable deduction | No additional itemized deduction for the excluded amount | Potential deduction under normal substantiation and itemization rules |
| Timing risk | Trustee must complete the direct transfer by the relevant deadline | You control the donation after receiving the distribution, but the IRA withdrawal is already taxable |
| Documentation | Custodian records and charity acknowledgment are both important | IRA distribution records plus the ordinary charitable receipt are required |
A cash donation made after an ordinary IRA withdrawal is therefore a different tax sequence, not a QCD retroactively. You cannot convert it into a QCD by sending the same money to a charity later.

QCD equals the RMD
Suppose a 75-year-old owner has a $40,000 RMD for 2026 and directs the custodian to send $40,000 to an eligible charity. If the transfer is completed directly and the owner’s total 2026 QCDs remain within the $111,000 annual limit, the $40,000 counts toward the RMD and is generally excluded from income.
QCD exceeds the RMD
If the same owner directs $55,000 to charity, $40,000 can satisfy the RMD and the remaining $15,000 can also be excluded as a QCD, assuming the annual cap and all eligibility rules are met. The owner does not receive a charitable deduction for either excluded portion.

Distribution exceeds the annual cap
If an owner directs $120,000 in QCDs during 2026, the $111,000 annual exclusion shown on the IRS worksheet is the maximum amount eligible for exclusion. The remaining $9,000 is generally included in income like another IRA distribution. The full transfer may still be charitable, but it is not fully tax-excluded.
IRA basis is involved
An owner with nondeductible IRA contributions may not be able to exclude the entire gross payment. The amount that would otherwise be taxable can qualify for QCD exclusion, while basis and other distributions can require a Form 8606 calculation. This is a situation where the custodian’s gross distribution figure alone is not enough to finish the return.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
- Making the check payable to yourself: Ask for the charity to be the payee. Once you receive the funds, the transaction generally becomes an ordinary distribution.
- Using the wrong age: Eligibility begins at 70½, not at the RMD starting age. The relevant date is when the distribution occurs.
- Assuming every nonprofit qualifies: Confirm the recipient’s status before issuing instructions.
- Using an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA: The cited IRS guidance excludes these accounts from the QCD definition. Ask whether a different eligible IRA is available.
- Waiting until year-end: Custodian processing and mail delivery can move the completion date into the next calendar year.
- Exceeding the annual cap: Add all QCDs made during the year, including payments to multiple charities, before deciding how much remains excludable.
- Claiming both benefits: Do not itemize the amount already excluded as a QCD.
- Losing the acknowledgment: Keep the charity’s contemporaneous written acknowledgment even when no deduction is claimed; it supports the nature and destination of the transfer.
- Ignoring basis: Review Form 8606 history and other IRA distributions when nondeductible contributions exist.
When to obtain individualized advice
General QCD rules do not resolve every account design or timing question. Ask the custodian and a qualified tax professional before acting if you have an inherited IRA, multiple account owners, a first RMD being delayed until April 1, nondeductible contributions, a SEP or SIMPLE IRA, a large transfer near the annual cap, or a charity whose eligibility is uncertain. Confirm the current-year limit and Form 1040 instructions because both the dollar amount and reporting details can change.
