The available official material explains direct and regular mutual-fund plans, but it does not identify a PRIM provider, product, fee schedule, portfolio, eligibility rule or performance record. Ask for PRIM’s current disclosure document and compare its service with a DIY portfolio using the same holdings, dates, risk level and all-in costs.
For Indian investors, the central known comparison is between a direct plan bought without a distributor and a regular plan bought through a distributor or agent. Both are in the same scheme and share its portfolio and fund manager, but their expenses differ. A lower expense ratio can improve compounding when everything else is equal; it does not prove that a self-managed portfolio will beat a managed service, or that either route will deliver a particular return.

What a valid PRIM-versus-DIY comparison requires
“DIY mutual funds” normally means that you select schemes, choose direct plans where available, place the transactions yourself and make your own allocation and rebalancing decisions. “PRIM” is not defined in the official sources available for this topic. It could refer to a portfolio-management service, an advisory arrangement, a platform, a model portfolio or something else. Those structures can have very different costs, legal obligations and investment results.

Before calculating a return, obtain a document that states the service’s legal entity, regulator category, portfolio construction method, benchmark, risk description, minimum investment, dealing and custody arrangements, every fee, exit terms and the method used to report performance. If the provider will not supply those details, there is no reliable basis for a numerical comparison.

How direct and regular mutual-fund plans differ
Same scheme, portfolio and fund manager
AMFI explains that a direct plan and a regular plan belong to the same mutual-fund scheme. They have the same underlying portfolio and fund manager. The difference is the route by which the investor enters: a direct plan is bought without a distributor or agent, while a regular plan uses one.
Why the expense ratios differ
The regular plan includes distribution-related costs and commissions in its expense structure. A direct plan excludes those distribution expenses, so its expense ratio is lower for the same scheme. AMFI says that lower expenses can compound into higher returns over the years, assuming the investment and all other conditions are the same.
The expense ratio is part of the scheme’s total expense ratio (TER). AMFI defines TER as the cost of operating and managing a scheme, charged as a percentage of average net assets. Expenses are deducted from scheme assets and therefore appear indirectly in the NAV rather than as a separate bill in the investor’s account. AMFI’s investor material says scheme TER should be disclosed daily on the asset-management company and AMFI websites.
Never treat a remembered or generic TER as the current cost of every fund. AMFI’s TER disclosure separates a base expense ratio from applicable brokerage cost, transaction cost and statutory levies, and presents the percentages on an annualised basis. Check the actual scheme, plan, period and disclosure date.

| Feature | Direct plan | Regular plan |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio and fund manager | Same scheme portfolio and manager | Same scheme portfolio and manager |
| Distributor or agent | Not used for the plan | Used for the plan |
| Expense ratio | Lower because distribution expenses and commissions are excluded | Higher where distribution expenses and commissions apply |
| Investor responsibility | Fund selection, transactions and ongoing decisions are generally the investor’s responsibility | Distributor interaction may provide transaction help or guidance, depending on the arrangement |
Calculate the full cost, not just TER
Use a consistent cost definition for both alternatives. A practical annualised comparison is:
net cost = scheme TER + applicable brokerage and transaction costs + statutory levies + separate service fee + annualised one-time costs
That formula is a comparison framework, not a claim that every item applies to every investor. Confirm each item in the scheme and service documents.
Scheme expenses
Record the base expense ratio for the exact plan and date. If AMFI’s disclosure lists additional brokerage or transaction costs, record them separately rather than assuming they are already represented by the base figure. Note whether a number is annualised and whether it changes with assets or regulatory limits.
Service and distribution charges
A regular-plan investor bears the cost associated with the distributor route through the plan’s expenses. A managed service may charge an additional fixed fee, an asset-based fee, a performance-linked fee or a combination. A DIY investor may pay no separate advice fee, but should not describe personal time and decision-making as “free” when those responsibilities are material to the choice.

Transaction, statutory and exit costs
Include disclosed brokerage, transaction charges and statutory levies when they are applicable. Check exit loads, switch charges, account or custody charges and any fee for moving out of the service. Record whether a charge is paid once, on each transaction, annually or only on redemption. A fee that occurs once can still affect the result if the holding period is short.

Compare investment returns before and after the taxes that actually apply to the investor’s transactions. Tax treatment can depend on the type of fund, holding period, transaction, account and the law in force at the time. Do not insert one universal tax percentage into a PRIM-versus-DIY spreadsheet; verify the current rules for the investor’s circumstances.
Compare returns on an identical basis
Match the exposure
Use the same scheme or genuinely equivalent holdings. Comparing a diversified equity portfolio with a debt fund, or a passive index exposure with an actively rebalanced allocation, answers a different question from “which route is cheaper?” If the strategies differ, label the result as a strategy comparison and report the differences in sector, asset class, concentration, benchmark and risk.
Match the dates and cash flows
Use identical start and end dates, and include every contribution, withdrawal and distribution consistently. For a series of investments, use a cash-flow-aware measure such as an internal rate of return rather than comparing two headline point-to-point numbers. State whether the result is based on NAVs, account statements or a provider’s reported performance.
Deduct all relevant costs
A return comparison should be after scheme expenses and after any separate PRIM fee or investor-paid charge. If one option reports a gross return and the other reports a net return, convert them to the same basis before drawing a conclusion. State whether taxes are included or excluded.

Use the same risk context
Report volatility, drawdowns, concentration and diversification alongside the return. A higher return over one period may simply reflect higher equity exposure or greater concentration. The cheapest structure is not automatically the best choice if its portfolio does not match the investor’s time horizon or ability to tolerate losses.
What the official fee illustration does—and does not—show
SEBI Investor illustrates fee compounding with a hypothetical ₹1,00,000 investment earning an assumed 10% annual return. Its example uses a 1.5% expense ratio for a regular plan and 0.5% for a direct plan, producing illustrative effective returns of 8.5% and 9.5% respectively.
| SEBI illustration input | Regular plan | Direct plan |
|---|---|---|
| Starting investment | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,00,000 |
| Assumed annual return before expenses | 10% | 10% |
| Illustrative expense ratio | 1.5% | 0.5% |
| Illustrative return after that expense | 8.5% | 9.5% |
These are scenario assumptions in an official explainer, not measured investor outcomes, a forecast, a study of typical current costs or a promise of performance. The example demonstrates why a recurring cost difference can matter when compounded; it does not establish that DIY will outperform a particular managed service. For a real comparison, replace the assumptions with the exact scheme and service data for the chosen dates.

Do not assume that a product called PRIM is a portfolio manager. If the provider says it offers portfolio-management services, read the agreement and the disclosures required for that category. SEBI’s portfolio-manager regulations state that the manager’s fee is agreed with the client and may be fixed, return-based or a combination. The regulations also require disclosure of fees and charges associated with the service and performance, and prohibit directly or indirectly guaranteeing or assuring returns.

If PRIM is instead an adviser, distributor or software-enabled model portfolio, the relevant documents and cost rules may differ. Identify the category before applying any regulatory conclusion.
Risk, diversification and investor behaviour
Expense is only one determinant of the outcome. Compare the portfolio’s asset allocation, number and size of positions, sector or issuer concentration, credit quality, duration, equity exposure, currency exposure and rebalancing rules. Check whether the investment follows a stated benchmark or can change materially at the manager’s discretion.
Also assess the investor’s behaviour. DIY requires selecting a suitable scheme, maintaining the target allocation, investing through market declines and resisting performance-chasing. A service that charges more may still be useful to an investor who would otherwise abandon the plan, select unsuitable funds or fail to rebalance. That is a suitability judgment, not proof that a fee-paying service will earn more.

AMFI says direct plans make sense for investors with adequate knowledge and capability to select funds. It also says an investor who needs guidance may consider a registered investment adviser for a fee. AMFI’s exact wording is: “Direct Plan makes sense only if you have adequate knowledge and capability to select good funds yourself; or, are willing to seek professional advice of a registered investment adviser for a fee.” This is general investor education, not personalised advice.
A practical DIY comparison workflow
- Define the objective. Write the goal, time horizon, required liquidity, acceptable loss and target asset allocation before selecting a fund.
- Choose the comparison unit. Decide whether you are testing one direct plan against a regular plan of the same scheme, or a DIY portfolio against a separately managed strategy. Do not mix those questions.
- Collect dated documents. Save the scheme factsheet, TER disclosure, portfolio, benchmark, service agreement and fee schedule that applied on the comparison date.
- Record all cash flows. Enter contributions, withdrawals, distributions, switches and fees with their dates. Avoid comparing only the current account value.
- Normalise performance. Use matching periods and a common return convention. State whether returns are time-weighted or cash-flow-weighted and whether they are net of all identified charges.
- Stress-test the decision. Examine a market fall, a delayed goal, a period of underperformance and the cost of stopping or switching. Confirm that the investor could follow the plan in each case.
- Review the documents annually. TERs, holdings, service terms and tax rules can change. Recalculate rather than carrying forward an old headline number.
AMFI lists AMC websites, exchange platforms, MF Utility and other digital channels as routes for direct investing. Use a channel that clearly identifies the direct plan, displays the transaction confirmation and provides statements; the channel itself does not remove the investor’s responsibility for fund selection.
Which route fits which investor?
| Investor situation | Questions to answer | Potentially suitable route |
|---|---|---|
| Confident and experienced | Can you select funds, monitor allocation and rebalance without reacting emotionally? | DIY direct plans may be appropriate if the portfolio and process are well defined. |
| Needs fund-selection help | Is the guidance independent, fee-transparent and provided by a properly registered adviser? | Consider paid advice after checking registration, scope and conflicts. |
| Wants an outsourced process | What exactly does the service do, what does it cost and how is performance reported? | Consider the named service only after reviewing its current disclosure and agreement. |
| Short horizon or low loss tolerance | Does the proposed portfolio match the time available and liquidity need? | Neither a lower TER nor a service label substitutes for suitable asset allocation. |
| Likely to trade or switch frequently | What are the exit, switching, tax and transaction consequences? | Choose the structure whose rules the investor can follow consistently. |
Common comparison errors and fixes
- Assuming PRIM’s identity: fix this by obtaining the provider name, legal category and current disclosure before using any number.
- Comparing a direct-plan TER with a service’s headline return: put every scheme and service charge on the same net-return basis.
- Using different portfolios: either match the exposure or explain why the strategies and risks are not equivalent.
- Quoting the SEBI example as a forecast: label ₹1,00,000, 10%, 1.5% and 0.5% as hypothetical illustration inputs.
- Ignoring investor behaviour: test whether the investor can maintain the DIY plan during losses and rebalance when required.
- Treating a low cost as a guarantee: lower expenses can help all else equal, but they cannot guarantee superior portfolio performance.
- Leaving tax and exit terms until the end: record them before deciding, because they can change the realised result and liquidity.
The decision rule
Choose DIY direct mutual funds when you can identify suitable schemes, maintain a diversified allocation, execute transactions accurately and stay disciplined without paid oversight. Consider a service only when its identity, regulation, portfolio, process, total fees and net performance are documented well enough to compare with your DIY alternative. Until PRIM’s actual offering is identified, the only defensible conclusion is that its cost and return cannot be established; the comparison should remain conditional rather than rely on an invented fee, holding or performance claim.
