SEBI’s Portfolio Managers Route for Investing in Mutual Fund Units (PRIM) is a separate portfolio-management framework in which an eligible portfolio manager selects and rebalances direct mutual-fund investments for a client. Reports put the minimum investment at ₹25 lakh—below the commonly cited ₹50 lakh threshold for conventional PMS—but the framework is not a guaranteed-return product, and its operational launch, fees and contract terms must be verified with each provider.
What PRIM is
PRIM allows an existing portfolio manager to offer a mutual-fund-focused mandate alongside its conventional portfolio-management business. Instead of concentrating mainly on individual shares or other securities, the manager allocates the client’s money among direct plans of mutual-fund schemes offered by Indian asset-management companies.

The eligible universe can include exchange-traded funds (ETFs), index funds and specialised investment funds (SIFs), subject to the mandate and exposure limits in the client agreement. PRIM is a regulated service route, not a new mutual-fund scheme and not a promise of a particular return.

SEBI’s board approved the framework on 24 September 2026. Reports published after that decision identify the ticket size and eligible fund universe, but they do not establish a single effective date for every operational provision or confirm that every PMS firm has begun offering PRIM.

How a PRIM account works
- Choose an authorised provider. Confirm that the portfolio manager is permitted to offer the PRIM service and that its disclosure document is current.
- Agree the mandate. The written client agreement records your objectives, risk limits, eligible instruments, investment horizon and the services the manager will provide.
- Transfer the investment amount. The reported minimum PRIM ticket is ₹25 lakh. The provider’s current documents should confirm the minimum applicable to your account and any higher internal threshold.
- Let the manager select and rebalance. The manager, rather than the investor, chooses and switches the permitted direct mutual-fund holdings within the agreed limits.
- Receive reporting and settlement. The agreement should explain custody, statements, reporting frequency and how the account is settled at maturity or if it ends early.
What the ₹25 lakh minimum means
The ₹25 lakh figure is the reported minimum investment for PRIM in 2026. It is lower than the ₹50 lakh minimum commonly associated with conventional PMS, making PRIM relevant to investors who have substantial investable assets but prefer a professionally managed fund portfolio to a portfolio built primarily from individual securities.
The figure should not be treated as a universal promise that every provider will accept exactly ₹25 lakh. Check the manager’s current disclosure document, because a firm may set a higher commercial minimum or delay offering the route while operational arrangements are completed.

PRIM compared with other ways to invest
| Feature | PRIM | Self-directed direct mutual-fund investing | Conventional PMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported minimum capital | ₹25 lakh | No portfolio-manager minimum stated | ₹50 lakh commonly associated with the route |
| Who selects and rebalances | The portfolio manager, within the signed mandate | The investor | The portfolio manager, within the signed mandate |
| Eligible investments | Direct mutual-fund schemes, including ETFs, index funds and SIFs offered by Indian asset-management companies | Funds selected by the investor | Broader securities universe than PRIM, subject to the PMS mandate |
| Fees | No standard fee was established; read the provider’s disclosure and agreement | No manager mandate; costs depend on the selected funds and transactions | Varies by provider and agreement |
| Account control and withdrawals | Terms, notice, charges and settlement are set by the agreement | The investor controls purchases and redemptions under each fund’s rules | Terms are set by the PMS agreement |
PRIM’s defining trade-off is discretion: you give the manager authority to build and rebalance a ₹25 lakh-or-more direct-fund portfolio. Self-directed investing preserves decision-making with you, while conventional PMS generally starts at a higher capital level and can use a wider range of securities.
What must be in the client agreement
Do not rely on a presentation or a verbal explanation. The written agreement should set out:
Rank #3
- your investment objectives and the services covered;
- permitted schemes and instruments, plus exposure limits;
- the investment tenure and the process for changing the mandate;
- early-withdrawal, termination and notice provisions;
- material risks and the possibility of loss;
- all management, performance, custody, transaction or other charges;
- custody arrangements and the form and frequency of reports; and
- how holdings and cash are settled at maturity or after early termination.
If a document does not state a fee, lock-in, notice period or eligible-fund restriction clearly, ask the provider to clarify it in writing before funding the account.
Renewal is a fresh placement, not an automatic rollover
SEBI’s portfolio-manager rules state: “Any renewal of portfolio fund on maturity of the initial period shall be deemed as a fresh placement.” This is regulation 16(1)(b). Maturity is therefore a review point. Continuing with the same manager requires a new placement decision after you reassess the mandate, fees, risk limits, eligible funds and the provider’s authorisation.

The available material does not establish a PRIM-specific automatic-renewal process or a universal contract duration. Treat the initial term in your own agreement as controlling and ask when the provider will send maturity notices and settlement instructions.
When you may withdraw
The rules permit withdrawal of funds or securities before maturity in specified situations, including voluntary or compulsory termination, suspension or cancellation of the manager’s registration, and the manager’s bankruptcy or liquidation. The exact procedure, notice requirements, valuation date, transfer method and any early-exit charge come from the signed agreement.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Because no standard PRIM fee schedule or withdrawal charge was established, compare those clauses rather than assuming that a PRIM account can be redeemed like an ordinary mutual-fund folio.

- Market risk: ETFs, index funds, SIFs and other mutual-fund holdings can fall in value; professional selection does not remove loss risk.
- Mandate risk: the manager can switch funds within the agreed limits, so the result may differ from a fund you would have chosen yourself.
- Liquidity and timing risk: the agreement may impose notice, maturity or settlement steps that differ from direct fund investing.
- Provider risk: confirm the manager’s registration status and current PRIM disclosure before transferring money.
- Cost uncertainty: do not assume a standard management fee, performance fee, custody charge or tax outcome; obtain the complete schedule in writing.
Checklist before transferring ₹25 lakh or more
- Verify the portfolio manager’s authorisation and that PRIM is actually available from that firm.
- Read the disclosure document and agreement together; check that the eligible-fund list and exposure limits match your objectives.
- Record the initial tenure, maturity date, renewal notice process and settlement method.
- Identify every fee, tax statement responsibility, custody arrangement and reporting schedule.
- Ask how voluntary termination works, how quickly assets can be returned and what charges can apply.
- At maturity, make a fresh decision; do not treat silence or an unchanged strategy as consent to renew.
What investors should expect next
Board approval on 24 September 2026 establishes the framework, but it does not prove that all PMS firms are operationally ready on the same day. Before investing, obtain the provider’s latest documents and confirm the launch status, minimum amount, eligible direct-fund universe and contract terms for your jurisdiction and account.
PRIM may suit an investor who wants professional fund selection and rebalancing but does not meet—or does not want to commit—the higher capital commonly associated with conventional PMS. Its value depends on the manager’s mandate, execution and costs, all of which must be evaluated from the signed documents rather than inferred from the ₹25 lakh headline.
