Use a prediction-market event contract when you want a binary payoff on a precisely defined milestone and the contract has objective, transparent settlement rules. Use a listed stock option when your real thesis is how far and how quickly the share price will move after the milestone.
That distinction matters because an event contract can pay correctly when an approval or launch occurs, while a call can still lose if the stock move was already priced in, too small, too late, or overwhelmed by the premium and volatility changes. Conversely, an option can express a view when no event contract exists, but it never pays merely because the milestone is true.

What each instrument actually pays
Prediction-market event contracts
An event contract is a yes-or-no claim about a defined real-world outcome. A contract might ask whether a named company will receive a specified regulatory approval by a stated date. A “yes” share commonly trades at a price that reflects the market’s implied probability and pays according to the contract’s rules if the outcome resolves yes. The price is not a guarantee, and fees, liquidity and the final determination affect the result.
The headline is only a shorthand. The legal contract controls:

Read those terms rather than relying on a market label or social-media description.
Listed stock options
A stock option is a derivative on the share price, not on the milestone itself. A call gives its owner the right to buy shares at a strike price before expiration; a put gives the right to sell shares at the strike. The option’s value depends on the underlying price, strike, time remaining, implied volatility, interest rates and supply-and-demand conditions.
The Securities and Exchange Commission describes options as contracts giving the owner the right to buy or sell an underlying asset at a fixed price on or before a specified future date. A milestone is therefore an indirect catalyst thesis. The stock must move far enough, soon enough and in the expected direction to overcome the option premium and any loss of time value or implied volatility.
Direct exposure versus a price-reaction proxy
| Question | Prediction-market event contract | Listed stock option |
|---|---|---|
| What determines the payoff? | A specified yes/no outcome and the contract’s settlement rule. Wording and evidence hierarchy are decisive. | The share price relative to strike, the premium paid or received, volatility and expiration. |
| Does it track the milestone itself? | Yes, if the exact milestone is listed and objectively settled. If it is not listed, this route cannot express that thesis directly. | No. It expresses the expected stock-price reaction, which may differ from whether the milestone occurs. |
| What controls timing? | The contract cutoff and the venue’s settlement process. Administrative resolution can occur after the event date. | Expiration is hard. A call or put ceases to exist after expiration. |
| How can a buyer lose? | The position stake can be lost, with fees, poor execution and settlement uncertainty affecting the realized result. | A long option can expire worthless and lose the entire premium. |
| What happens when selling? | Rules depend on the venue and contract; read position and liquidation provisions. | Short options create obligations. Assignment and margin requirements can produce share delivery or purchase obligations. |
| What determines tradability? | Whether the venue lists the precise question and attracts two-sided liquidity. | The option chain’s spread, open interest, volume, volatility and broker approval. |
| What access rules apply? | Check the venue’s current authorization and availability in your jurisdiction. Kalshi says it became a CFTC-designated contract market in 2020. | Listed U.S. equity options are exchange-cleared products. Read your broker’s disclosures and the SEC and OCC risk documents. |
Start with the milestone, not the product
Write the thesis as a falsifiable sentence before opening either account. Include the company, event, deadline, evidence source and what you expect the market to do afterward. “The company will succeed” is not tradeable. “The named regulator will grant approval for product X by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on the contract date” is specific enough to test against a contract’s rules. An options thesis should add a price target and time window, such as “the stock will rise above the call’s break-even before expiration.”
Separate three questions that are often mixed together:
- Will the milestone happen? This is the natural question for an event contract.
- How much will investors reprice the shares? This is the central options question.
- When will the information become known and tradable? A correct direction with the wrong timing can still produce a loss.
How to evaluate a prediction-market position
1. Confirm that the exact event is listed
Search the venue for the company, milestone and deadline. Do not substitute a broad question for a narrow one: an FDA filing is not an FDA approval, a product announcement is not commercial availability, and an earnings beat is not the same as meeting a revenue target. If no contract matches the event, a prediction market cannot provide direct exposure.

2. Read the settlement language line by line
Identify the primary source, any fallback source, the publication deadline and the authority that makes the final determination. Check whether an approval must be unconditional, whether a launch must occur in a particular country, and whether a restatement or correction can change the result. Note what happens if the source is silent, delayed, withdrawn or contradictory.

A yes-share price is commonly interpreted as an implied probability, but that interpretation is simplified. Bid-ask spreads, fees, market depth, risk preferences and the possibility of a later rule-based determination all matter. A contract priced at 70 cents is not a promise of a 70 percent outcome, nor does it guarantee a 30-cent loss if the market is cancelled under its rules.
4. Check entry and exit liquidity
Inspect both sides of the market, recent trades and the quantity available near your intended price. Use a limit order when the spread is wide. Decide in advance whether you will hold to settlement or exit if the probability changes. Thin liquidity can make a correct forecast difficult to monetize.
5. Record the operational details
Save the contract version, cutoff time, fee schedule and settlement source. A venue can update a market’s displayed status while the underlying evidence remains under review. Keep records for tax reporting and for any dispute process allowed by the rules.
How to evaluate an option trade around a milestone
1. Identify the event date and the expiration date
List the earliest credible announcement date, the latest date on which the thesis could work and the option’s expiration. An option can lose value even while the thesis remains plausible if the market waits longer than expected. Never treat an announced milestone date as an expiration date unless the option actually expires afterward.

2. Calculate the break-even price
For a purchased call held to expiration, the simplified break-even is strike plus premium paid, before commissions and other costs. For a purchased put, it is strike minus premium. Before entering, ask whether the stock could reasonably cross that level by expiration, not merely whether the milestone could occur.

3. Compare the option with the market’s expectations
Option prices already incorporate information about the event, the company and expected volatility. A call can be expensive because traders widely anticipate approval. If the announcement produces only the move already embedded in the premium, the option may lose despite a correct forecast.
4. Choose the structure that matches the risk
A long call or put caps the buyer’s maximum dollar loss at the premium, but that premium can expire worthless. A debit spread buys one option and sells another to reduce the initial outlay while capping upside. The short leg introduces additional terms and execution considerations, so read the strategy’s maximum profit, maximum loss, expiration behavior and assignment provisions.
5. Inspect volatility, spreads and open interest
Compare the bid and ask, volume, open interest and implied volatility across expirations and strikes. Use a limit order when appropriate. A wide spread can turn a theoretically attractive trade into an expensive entry and exit. Volatility can fall after a scheduled announcement, reducing an option’s value even when the stock moves in the predicted direction.

Why a correct milestone forecast can still lose with an option
The success was already priced in
Suppose a stock trades at $50 and a call with a $55 strike costs $2. If the milestone occurs and the stock is $56 at expiration, the call has $1 of intrinsic value but required $2 to buy. The forecast was correct; the option position loses $1 per share before costs. The market’s prior expectation and the option’s break-even hurdle matter more than the event alone.
The move is too small
A company can receive good news while the shares rise only modestly. Calls need a sufficiently large move above the strike plus premium; puts need a sufficiently large decline below the strike minus premium. A favorable headline is not the same as a profitable payoff.
The option expires first
If approval or launch is delayed beyond expiration, the option can expire worthless even if the event eventually occurs. Rolling to a later expiration requires a new trade at the then-current price and volatility; it does not restore the original position.

Implied volatility falls
Scheduled catalysts often attract elevated implied volatility. Once uncertainty is removed, volatility can contract. That “volatility crush” can offset some or all of the stock move, especially for options bought shortly before the announcement.

Long options
The buyer’s maximum loss is normally the premium paid, plus transaction costs. That limit does not make the trade low risk: the entire premium can disappear quickly as expiration approaches, and an option with no remaining time value may be worth only its intrinsic value.
Short options
Selling an option creates an obligation rather than a right. A short call may require delivery of shares; a short put may require purchase of shares. The Options Industry Council states that an American-style option seller can be assigned on any business day, with assignment risk generally increasing as expiration approaches and as the option moves deeper in the money. Broker margin rules and account permissions apply.
Do not sell an option unless you understand the maximum possible obligation, collateral requirement, early-assignment process and what your broker will do if you cannot meet it. A covered call, cash-secured put and defined-risk spread have different obligations; their names do not replace reading the contract specifications.
Settlement, liquidity and execution traps
Event-contract settlement risk
A casual reading of a question can miss a qualifying phrase that changes the outcome. Verify the source hierarchy, cutoff, time zone, cancellation clause and dispute path before trading. If two official sources conflict, the contract’s stated authority and escalation process control, not a trader’s preferred interpretation.

Option execution risk
Option quotes can be less liquid than the underlying shares. Entering at a market order during a fast announcement can fill far from the displayed midpoint. Check the option chain, use limit orders where suitable and account for commissions, exchange fees and the cost of crossing the spread.
Position sizing
Size each position so that a total loss of the planned stake or premium is acceptable. Avoid treating a binary event as a reason to use maximum leverage. For options, consider the effect of a gap, volatility change and expiration; for event contracts, consider the possibility that you cannot exit near your modeled probability.
Access, regulation and record keeping
Availability varies by country, state, account type and product. A venue’s authorization can change, and a contract available to one resident may be unavailable to another. Confirm current eligibility, identity requirements, funding rules, position limits and withdrawal terms directly with the venue or broker.
The CFTC identifies the Iowa Presidential Stock Market, now the Iowa Electronic Market, as the first modern prediction market, created in 1988 as an experimental academic program at the University of Iowa. Kalshi’s published history says it became the first fully regulated U.S. financial exchange specifically for event contracts in 2020 and was designated a CFTC-designated contract market. Those historical descriptions do not establish that every event venue or contract is authorized for every user.
Tax treatment differs by country and can depend on whether the position is an event contract, an option, a spread, an assignment or an exercise. Keep confirmations, settlement statements, option exercise and assignment records, fees and currency conversions. Obtain current professional tax advice for your jurisdiction rather than applying a generic stock-trading rule.
A practical decision framework
Choose an event contract when all of these are true
- The exact milestone and deadline are listed.
- The settlement source and evidence hierarchy are objective and understandable.
- You prefer a binary outcome payoff over exposure to the size of a share-price move.
- The market has enough liquidity for your entry and planned exit.
- The venue is authorized and available where you live.
Choose a listed option when all of these are true
- Your thesis concerns the magnitude and timing of the stock reaction.
- You have calculated the break-even price and believe the stock can reach it before expiration.
- You understand premium decay, implied-volatility changes and the possibility of a post-event reversal.
- You can accept the full premium loss on a long option or meet every obligation of a short strategy.
- Your broker has approved the strategy and you have checked spreads, open interest and execution costs.
Do not force either instrument
If the milestone is not listed, an event contract is unavailable as direct exposure. If the option chain makes the required move implausibly large or the expiration is too close, an option may be a poor proxy. Waiting for a better-defined contract, using shares, or declining the trade can be more disciplined than converting an uncertain thesis into leverage.
Pre-trade checklist
- Write the event, deadline, evidence source and expected price reaction in one sentence.
- For an event contract, copy the exact question and settlement terms into your records.
- For an option, record strike, expiration, premium, break-even, maximum loss and volatility.
- Check bid-ask spread, depth, open interest, fees and the ability to exit.
- Confirm jurisdictional access, broker approval and tax-record requirements.
- Define what would invalidate the thesis and the maximum amount you will risk.
- After the announcement, distinguish the event result from the market reaction before deciding whether to close, hold or accept settlement.
Bottom line for common milestones
For a narrowly worded approval-by-date question with transparent settlement, an event contract is the more direct instrument because its payoff is tied to that yes-or-no outcome. For an earnings beat, product launch or revenue target where the key question is whether the shares will jump enough to justify the premium, a listed option is the relevant—but indirect—tool. Neither instrument turns a forecast into a certainty: event contracts depend on contract language and settlement, while options depend on price magnitude, timing, volatility and expiration.
