For a goal you will fund for exactly five years and do not need to draw from during the term, National Savings Certificate (NSC, VIII Issue) is usually the closer fit. India Post lists NSC at 7.7%, with interest compounded yearly and paid at maturity. A Post Office Time Deposit (TD) is more flexible about the length of the deposit and is listed at a headline range of 6.9% to 7.5%, depending on the selected period. That range does not mean every TD tenure earns 7.5%.
The better choice depends on four questions: when you need the money, whether you need interest before maturity, how much access you can tolerate losing, and how current tax rules apply to you. The rates below are the figures shown on India Post’s savings listing accessed in 2026; the captured page does not identify the effective quarter. Check the government notification applicable on your opening date before investing.

What each product is designed to do
Post Office Time Deposit
A TD is a fixed-term deposit in the post-office savings system. Its principal advantage for planning is term choice: you select an offered period rather than being locked into the NSC’s single five-year maturity. That can help when a liability falls due in less than five years or when you want a maturity date that is not exactly five years away.

India Post’s listing gives TD a headline range of 6.9% to 7.5%. Because the accessible listing does not show the term-specific schedule or its effective quarter, do not apply the top of the range to every deposit. Record the tenure, rate and effective date shown in the current notification or account paperwork when you open the TD.
TD is not a demand account. The 2023 amendment permits premature closure subject to conditions, including a six-month minimum holding period and reduced-interest calculations in specified cases. You therefore gain more exit flexibility than NSC, but you do not get unrestricted, penalty-free access.
National Savings Certificate, VIII Issue
NSC VIII Issue is a five-year certificate. The POSB Manual describes the historical change this way: “The maturity period of the certificate shall be six years commencing from the date indicated on the certificate. Maturity period reduced to 5 Years from 1.12.2011.” The operative duration described after that historical sentence is five years.
India Post lists NSC at 7.7%, with annual compounding and payment at maturity. This structure suits a person who is accumulating toward a known date and does not need monthly or yearly cash from the investment. It is a poor substitute for an emergency reserve because the manual restricts premature encashment to specified circumstances and does not permit partial discharge.
How to choose when the goal date is the priority
1. Write down the date you actually need the money
Use the date of the tuition bill, property payment, business expenditure or other liability—not merely “about five years.” If the date is exactly five years from the planned investment and you can wait for a lump-sum payment, NSC’s fixed term maps cleanly to the goal.
If the date is materially shorter or longer, compare it with the TD tenures currently offered. A maturity that arrives too early may leave the money exposed to reinvestment-rate risk; one that arrives too late can force you to seek an early exit. The right product is the one whose contractual maturity is closest to the date you need the principal, after allowing for your tolerance for a small timing mismatch.
2. Decide whether you need cash during the term
NSC interest is not a periodic income stream. It accrues each year but is paid at maturity. Choose it only if you can fund living costs and interim bills from other sources.

For TD, do not assume a particular monthly, quarterly or annual credit pattern from the headline rate alone. Confirm the current scheme rule for the exact tenure and the way interest will be credited before relying on it for income. If interim cash is essential, compare the documented TD payment option with your cash-flow need rather than choosing on rate alone.
3. Set an access boundary
Ask how damaging it would be to wait for maturity if your circumstances changed. NSC’s restricted premature-encashment rules and prohibition on partial discharge mean that an unexpected need can require finding money elsewhere or closing the certificate only where an allowed circumstance exists.
TD’s six-month minimum holding period and reduced-interest consequences make it the more adaptable of the two, but “more adaptable” is not “liquid.” Keep emergency money outside either product. Use TD only when you understand the interest adjustment that would apply to an early closure under the current rules.

Interest rates: compare the right number on the right date
The published figures are a snapshot, not a permanent promise. India Post’s accessed listing shows a 6.9%–7.5% range for TD and 7.7% for NSC, but it does not expose the quarter in which those rates apply. Government small-savings rates can be revised for a new notification period. A comparison made without the applicable period can put the wrong rate beside your goal.
- Check the latest India Post or Department of Economic Affairs notification before opening.
- For TD, identify the selected tenure and the rate attached to that tenure; do not use the range’s maximum as a universal TD rate.
- For NSC, confirm that the 7.7% figure applies on the certificate’s issue date and note that the certificate’s five-year term and maturity-payment structure remain separate from the quoted annual rate.
- Save the notification or account record with the opening date so you can later distinguish the rate fixed for your investment from a rate displayed for a later period.
For a five-year comparison, also compare the timing of the cash, not only the percentage. NSC’s quoted rate compounds annually and is collected at maturity. A TD rate may be attached to a different term and a different crediting method. A higher headline number can be a poor match if the deposit matures before your liability or if you require income before then.
Tax treatment needs a current, personal check
The POSB Manual says NSC interest is liable to tax based on annual accrual, even though the investor receives the money at maturity. That creates a timing issue: taxable interest can arise each year without a corresponding cash payment.
The manual also discusses the first five years’ deemed reinvestment under the Section 80C framework. Its references include the historical Income-tax Act, 1962, so the manual is not a personalized conclusion about today’s deduction rules. Whether a deduction is available depends on the law in force for the relevant tax year, your tax regime, eligibility and the limits that apply to you. Do not call NSC tax-free, and do not include a deduction in your return without checking current law or obtaining qualified tax advice.
Make the same current-law check for TD interest and any reporting obligations. Compare products on a post-tax basis only after establishing your slab, regime and eligibility; the two headline rates alone cannot produce a reliable post-tax yield.

Why annual NSC accrual matters in practice
Because the certificate pays at maturity, it is easy to budget only for the final receipt and forget the annual tax treatment. Keep a year-by-year record of the interest that has accrued, the certificate issue date and the maturity date. This record helps you discuss the correct amount with a tax adviser and prevents the mistaken assumption that no taxable event exists until cash reaches your bank account.
The manual’s description of deemed reinvestment also should not be read as a guarantee that every investor receives a deduction. The relevant tax year, the regime you select, the overall statutory limit and your eligibility all matter. A person who has already used the available limit elsewhere may receive no additional benefit even if the instrument is otherwise eligible.
Operational details to confirm before opening
Bring the goal date and the amount you can genuinely leave invested. Ask the post-office official to show the current notification, the exact TD tenure available, the applicable rate for that tenure and the method and timing of interest credit. For NSC, verify the issue date, five-year maturity date, quoted rate and how maturity proceeds will be paid.
Read the premature-closure wording rather than relying on a verbal summary. For TD, confirm that the six-month minimum has been met before any closure request and ask how the reduced-interest calculation would affect your proceeds in the particular situation. For NSC, ask which specified circumstances permit premature encashment, what documentation is required and how the prohibition on partial discharge affects a joint or family goal.
Retain the certificate or deposit advice, receipt, nomination details, issue or opening date and maturity date. These records matter if you move, change your bank account for proceeds, need to establish the applicable rate later or ask a tax professional to reconcile annual accrual.

Decision paths for common goals
A lump sum needed in five years
NSC is the direct starting point when the goal date is five years away, you can leave the principal untouched, and you want the accumulated amount at one maturity. Its fixed five-year term and maturity-only payment avoid the need to choose among TD tenures.
A goal in two, three or four years
Start with TD because its period choice may align more closely with the liability. Verify which tenures are available and the rate for the exact period on the opening date. NSC’s five-year maturity would be later than the goal unless you qualify for a permitted early-encashment circumstance.
A goal more than five years away
NSC can cover the first five-year block, but it does not by itself solve a date beyond maturity. You would need a plan for the proceeds after five years, including the risk that reinvestment rates then differ. A TD may offer a different maturity match, depending on the periods currently offered.

Regular income is important
Neither product should be selected from the headline percentage without checking its payment mechanics. NSC pays at maturity, so it does not provide regular interim income. For TD, obtain the current tenure-specific crediting terms and test them against the amount and frequency you require.
You may need part of the money unexpectedly
Do not place the entire emergency reserve in NSC. Partial discharge is not allowed, and premature encashment is restricted. TD offers a conditional early-closure route after the minimum holding period, but reduced-interest calculations can apply. Keep a separate, readily accessible reserve and invest only the surplus.
You are uncertain about the exact liability date
First estimate the earliest and latest realistic payment dates. A TD tenure that matures near the earliest date may require reinvestment if the bill is delayed; an NSC maturity that falls after the latest acceptable date may be unusable without a permitted early exit. Treat timing certainty as a central feature, not an afterthought.
You are comparing investments held by different family members
Do not assume that a family member’s tax regime, eligibility or access rights apply to your account. Compare the issue or opening date, ownership and nomination records, expected tax treatment and the person who will actually need the proceeds. The product choice can be identical while the practical outcome differs because the investor’s circumstances differ.
A practical selection checklist
- Define the goal date. Put the exact date and required amount on paper.
- Separate emergency money. Neither instrument should be the only source for an unexpected bill.
- Choose the cash-flow pattern. Select NSC only if maturity payment works; for TD, verify the selected tenure’s interest-credit rules.
- Check the current notification. Record the rate period, TD tenure and NSC issue rate applicable on the opening date.
- Model an early exit. Read the current premature-closure conditions and reduced-interest calculation for TD; list the limited NSC circumstances in which encashment is allowed.
- Check tax status. Account for annual NSC accrual and confirm any Section 80C treatment under current law and your regime.
- Match the maturity. Prefer the product whose contractual maturity best matches the liability without relying on an uncertain early withdrawal.
- Keep records. Retain the certificate or deposit advice, opening date, applicable rate notification and maturity date.
- Set a review reminder. Note when the certificate or deposit matures and when you must check reinvestment options, so the proceeds do not sit outside your plan unintentionally.
Pitfalls that produce bad comparisons
Treating 7.5% as every TD’s rate
The official listing gives a range, not a promise that all periods earn the maximum. Compare the actual tenure-specific rate.
Calling NSC liquid
Restricted premature encashment and no partial discharge make NSC unsuitable as a general emergency fund.
Counting tax savings automatically
The manual’s Section 80C discussion does not override current tax law or establish your eligibility. Verify the relevant year’s rules.

Comparing annual rates but ignoring payment date
NSC’s interest is received at maturity. A rate comparison that ignores when cash arrives can select an instrument that fails the goal’s timing.

Assuming early closure means the original return survives
TD’s conditional closure route includes reduced-interest calculations in specified cases. The amount you receive after an early exit can therefore differ materially from the amount implied by holding to maturity.
Putting all goal money in one maturity
If your liability is paid in stages, a single certificate or deposit maturity may not match each instalment. Consider the timing of every expected payment and avoid assuming that partial NSC discharge will solve a shortfall.
Confusing accrual with cash in hand
NSC accrues interest annually but pays at maturity. Budgeting, tax records and liquidity planning must all reflect that distinction.

Is NSC better than Post Office TD for five years?
For a precise five-year lump-sum goal, NSC is often the more direct match because its operative term is five years and its interest is compounded yearly and paid at maturity. TD may still suit you if an available tenure better matches your date, if you need a different cash-flow arrangement, or if its conditional early-closure route is important. Verify the applicable rate and your tax position before deciding.
Does NSC pay interest every month or year?
No regular interim payment is described for NSC VIII Issue. Interest accrues annually and is paid with the certificate proceeds at maturity. You should not select it when you require a dependable monthly income from the investment itself.
Can I withdraw part of my NSC?
No. The POSB Manual states that partial discharge is not allowed. Premature encashment is restricted to specified circumstances, so NSC should not be treated as a flexible account for occasional withdrawals.
Can I close a Post Office TD early?
The 2023 amendment permits premature closure under conditions, including a six-month minimum holding period and reduced-interest calculations in specified cases. It is therefore more adaptable than NSC, but it is not unrestricted or penalty-free. Ask for the current calculation that applies to your tenure and circumstances.

Does the highest TD rate apply to every TD period?
No conclusion like that is supported by the headline range. India Post lists TD at 6.9% to 7.5%, with rates varying by period, but the accessible listing does not provide a term-by-term table. Obtain the rate for the exact tenure you are opening.
Is NSC tax-free?
No. The POSB Manual says NSC interest is liable to tax based on annual accrual. It also discusses deemed reinvestment under Section 80C, but that discussion uses historical statutory references and does not establish your current deduction. Check the law for the relevant tax year, your regime, limits and eligibility.
Which product is safer for an emergency fund?
Neither is a substitute for readily accessible emergency cash. NSC has restricted premature encashment and no partial discharge. TD permits conditional early closure only after the applicable minimum holding period and may reduce interest. Keep emergency reserves separately and invest only money that can remain committed.

Bottom-line choice
Choose NSC when the goal is a five-year lump sum, you can wait until maturity, and the applicable rate and tax treatment suit your circumstances. Choose TD when you need a different maturity period or value a conditional early-closure route enough to accept its rate and interest-adjustment trade-offs. In both cases, verify the current notification, match the term to the goal date, document the opening terms, and keep emergency cash outside the investment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose NSC for an exactly five-year goal?
Usually, NSC is the more direct fit if you can leave the money untouched and want one maturity payment. Confirm the issue-date rate, tax treatment and maturity date first.
Can NSC provide regular income?
No. Interest accrues annually and is paid at maturity, so it is not a monthly-income product.
Can I partially withdraw from NSC?
No. Partial discharge is not allowed, and premature encashment is limited to specified circumstances.
When can a TD be closed early?
The 2023 amendment allows premature closure subject to conditions, including a six-month minimum holding period and reduced-interest calculations in specified cases.
Is the 7.5% TD rate available for every tenure?
No. India Post shows a 6.9% to 7.5% range with rates varying by period. Obtain the exact tenure-specific rate on the opening date.
How is NSC taxed?
The POSB Manual describes annual accrual as taxable and discusses deemed reinvestment under Section 80C. Current law, regime, limits and eligibility must be checked for your situation.
