Polypropylene vs. Polyethylene Twine: Uses, Durability, and Cost

Neither polypropylene (PP) nor polyethylene (PE) twine is universally best. The right choice depends on the finished product’s resin type, construction, gauge, additives, strength, knot performance, ultraviolet (UV) stabilization and intended task. “Polyethylene twine” may mean ordinary high-density polyethylene (HDPE) agricultural twine, while high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) is a separate, high-performance rope fiber.

For a useful comparison, match products made for the same job and compare usable length, linear strength, knot strength, UV treatment, spool length and equipment compatibility. A price per pound or the material name alone can give a misleading answer.

What “polypropylene” and “polyethylene” mean in twine

Polypropylene and polyethylene are both polyolefin plastics, but a twine’s behavior is determined by more than its base resin. Drawing and twisting, monofilament or multifilament construction, diameter, fillers, colorants, lubricants and UV stabilizers all affect the finished line. Two products labeled with the same polymer can therefore perform very differently.

Polypropylene (PP)

PP is used in agricultural baler twine and in general tying, gardening, industrial, packaging and fishing-related products. The NSW Government’s technical guide lists polypropylene as resistant to rot and mildew and chemically inert for many common exposures, and notes uses including general-purpose tying and fishing. Those are generic fiber characteristics, not a guarantee for every retail twine. A finished product can still fail early if it is undersized, poorly constructed, abraded or insufficiently stabilized against sunlight.

Ordinary polyethylene and HDPE twine

“PE” is a broad label. Agricultural standards and product listings include high-density polyethylene (HDPE) twine as well as PP twine. Ask the seller to identify the PE type and grade rather than assuming that all polyethylene lines have the same strength or stretch.

HMPE is a different category

High-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) is engineered for high-performance rope and line. It should not be treated as equivalent to ordinary PE twine when comparing price, elongation or breaking strength. The NSW Government guide’s ordinary PE figures do not represent HMPE; its fiber comparison is available at NSW Government, “Construction of fibre rope”.

Generic fiber properties: useful context, not a product guarantee

The NSW Government table gives broad values for generic fibers. It is not a controlled, head-to-head test of finished PP and PE twines, and it does not predict service life for a particular spool.

Property Polypropylene (generic fiber) Polyethylene (generic fiber) How to use the figure
Elongation 18–22% 23–26% Indicates generic stretch before break; finished construction and load history can change behavior.
Melting point 166°C 135°C Relevant to heat exposure, but a twine can be damaged below its melting point by friction or hot surfaces.
Specific gravity Listed as floating Listed as floating Useful for water applications; additives and construction can affect the finished product.

Do not convert these numbers into a claim that PP always lasts longer or is always stronger. A UV-stabilized, tightly constructed PE twine can outlast an unstabilized PP product in sunlight, while a PP line selected for a particular baler can outperform an unsuitable PE line.

Uses: choose the task before the polymer

Agricultural baling

Baler twine has to feed, tension, knot and release correctly in a specific machine. Start with the baler model, bale type, crop, expected bale density and required knot strength. Use the baler manufacturer’s approved grade or a twine maker’s compatibility guidance. Agricultural standards cover both PP and HDPE twines, so the resin name alone does not identify the correct product; the grade and machine fit do.

Product grades can differ dramatically. For example, JUTA’s 2021 agriculture flyer lists a PP 350 grade at 128 kg and 1,750 m per spool, and a PP 150 grade at 285/180 kg and 1,350 m per spool. The flyer’s figures describe those named grades and their stated test methods; they are not representative values for all PP twine and cannot be compared directly with a PE product unless construction, test method and measurement basis match. See the manufacturer flyer at JUTA Agriculture Twines Flyer (2021).

Gardening and outdoor tying

Garden stakes, trellises, plant supports and bundling expose twine to sunlight, rain, soil and abrasion. Select the diameter and working strength needed to support the plant without cutting into stems. For permanent or seasonal outdoor use, require an explicit UV-stabilization statement for the intended exposure. “PP” or “PE” on the label is not enough to establish how many seasons the line will last.

Fishing and net repair

Fishing-net repair calls for purpose-built construction, predictable knot behavior and resistance to water exposure. Cordex markets a PP Multi product as UV-stabilized, floating twine for fishing-net repair; that is a product-specific claim, not proof that every PP twine is suitable. Review the listing at Cordex PP Multi and compare its stated diameter, strength and construction with the net you are repairing.

Packaging, industrial tying and general utility

PP twines are also sold for packaging, warehouse bundling, crafts and industrial tying. A synthetic-twine catalog from Pentagon Corporation/Mamba shows the range of agricultural, garden and industrial applications available in the market at Synthetic Twines Catalog. These application examples do not mean one grade can substitute for another. A soft packing twine, a high-tension baler twine and a net-repair twine may all be polypropylene but have different constructions and safe uses.

Durability: the factors that matter in service

Linear (tensile) strength versus knot strength

Manufacturers often publish an unknotted breaking value and a separate value for a knotted sample. Tama USA defines tensile strength as the force, measured in kilogram-force (kgf), needed to break a single unknotted length of twine, while knot strength is the maximum measured strength of twine containing a knot before it breaks. A knot creates a stress concentration and can reduce usable capacity substantially.

If your application uses knots, compare knot strength first and treat unknotted tensile strength as a separate reference. A line that looks stronger on a tensile-only table may be the weaker choice after the required knot is tied. The definitions and selection guidance are explained at Tama USA’s Twine Knowledge Center.

UV exposure

Sunlight gradually embrittles many plastics. Agricultural specifications therefore identify sunlight stabilization, and manufacturers sell UV-stabilized twines. Stabilization is a formulation and product-grade feature, not an automatic property of PP or PE. Check the stated exposure period, geographic assumptions and storage recommendations. If a specification says only “UV resistant” without a duration or test basis, treat that as a limited claim and avoid promising a fixed service life.

Abrasion, bending and construction

Repeated rubbing against bale chambers, tree bark, netting, hooks or sharp packaging edges can wear through a line even when its laboratory breaking strength is high. Multifilament and twisted constructions may handle flexing differently from monofilament products. Inspect the actual surface, diameter and flexibility, and match them to contact points in the equipment or assembly.

Stretch and load retention

The generic table lists greater elongation for ordinary PE than for PP (23–26% versus 18–22%). Stretch can be useful when a bundle needs compliance, but excessive extension can loosen a tie or change bale density. Whether that matters depends on pretension, knot type and the load cycle. Do not infer the finished twine’s exact elongation from the generic fiber percentages.

Heat and chemicals

The generic melting-point values are about 166°C for PP and 135°C for ordinary PE. A line can soften, creep or lose strength before melting, especially under tension. Keep either material away from hot machinery, welding sparks and heated surfaces unless the product data specifically permits that exposure. PP is described by the NSW guide as chemically inert in many general applications, but compatibility still depends on the particular chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure time.

Cost: compare usable work, not just plastic weight

No current, like-for-like retail price comparison establishes that PP is always cheaper or that PE is always cheaper. Prices vary by country, seller, spool size, resin grade, construction, UV treatment and intended strength.

Price per pound is especially misleading. Tama explains: “Cost per pound only considers the weight of plastic within a spool of twine but does not factor in the density or runnage of the twine, which can vary greatly from one manufacturer to another.” A lighter spool may contain more metres, while a heavier spool may deliver fewer metres of a thicker, stronger product.

A practical cost-comparison method

  1. Define the job. Specify the bale, bundle, net section or number of garden ties you need to complete.
  2. Set minimum performance. Record required linear strength, knot strength, diameter, flexibility and UV rating.
  3. Match construction. Compare like with like: similar gauge, twist or braid, spool length and intended equipment.
  4. Calculate usable-length cost. Divide the current purchase price by the metres that can actually be used, then multiply by the metres required for the task.
  5. Include waste and failures. Add unusable ends, breakage, retying, machine stoppages and replacement labor if those costs are material.

For example, a spool priced at $30 with 1,500 usable metres costs $0.02 per metre before waste. A $24 spool with 900 usable metres costs about $0.0267 per metre, even though its ticket price is lower. That calculation is meaningful only if both products meet the same strength, knot, UV and equipment requirements.

Historical manufacturing-cost context

A 1984 Government of Canada publication stated that polypropylene resin represented approximately 60% of the total manufacturing cost of synthetic baler twine in that historical context. It is not a current retail price, does not compare PP with PE, and should not be used to rank today’s products. The publication is archived at Government of Canada Publications.

How to select a twine step by step

  1. Describe the load and environment. Note whether the twine will hold a compressed bale, support a plant, close packaging, repair a net or bind a bundle. Record sunlight, water, chemicals, abrasion and temperature.
  2. Identify the exact resin. Ask whether the product is PP, ordinary PE, HDPE or HMPE. Do not accept “poly” as a complete material description.
  3. Read the finished-product data sheet. Look for diameter or gauge, linear/tensile strength, knot strength, runnage, spool mass, construction and recommended applications.
  4. Verify UV treatment. For outdoor use, require an explicit UV-stabilized specification and any stated service or test conditions.
  5. Check the joining method. If you will knot, splice or tie the line, use the published knot strength and test the actual knot. If a machine forms the knot, confirm the grade is approved for that machine.
  6. Compare equivalent lengths. Use price per usable metre or price per completed task, not price per spool or pound alone.
  7. Test a small quantity. Run a sample through the equipment or make representative ties before buying a full season’s supply. Inspect for slippage, fraying, cutting, breakage and feed problems.
  8. Store it correctly. Keep unused twine dry, protected from direct sun and away from heat and chemicals. Storage cannot restore strength already lost to UV or abrasion.

Application-specific decision guides

If you are buying baler twine

  • Start with the baler model and knotter requirements, not a generic PP-versus-PE preference.
  • Match the crop, bale density and expected tension to the maker’s grade recommendation.
  • Compare both linear and knot strength, plus spool runnage and feeding dimensions.
  • Confirm UV stabilization when bales will remain outdoors.
  • Reject a product if it causes missed knots, excessive fraying, slippage or repeated breaks, even when its listed tensile number appears adequate.

If you are tying outdoors

  • Choose the smallest diameter that provides the required support without cutting the plant or bundle.
  • Use a product explicitly stabilized for sunlight in your region.
  • Allow for wet conditions, wind-driven abrasion and seasonal temperature changes.
  • Replace line showing chalking, discoloration, surface cracks or brittle snap behavior.

If you are repairing a fishing net

  • Use a net-repair twine with stated construction and knot performance.
  • Confirm that floating or sinking behavior suits the net design.
  • Check UV stabilization and resistance to repeated wetting, drying and flexing.
  • Match diameter and knot size to the existing mesh so repairs do not create new stress points.

If you are bundling or packaging

  • Set the required holding force and acceptable stretch first.
  • Prioritize surface feel and abrasion resistance if workers will tie many bundles by hand.
  • Compare price per completed bundle, including the length used per tie and breakage.
  • For contact with food or sensitive goods, verify any applicable regulatory or supplier declaration separately; polymer name alone does not establish compliance.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating all PE twine as one product

Correction: Identify HDPE or another specific resin and obtain the finished grade’s strength and construction data. Keep HMPE in a separate comparison because it is a high-performance fiber category.

Mistake: comparing only unknotted tensile strength

Correction: Use knot strength whenever the load passes through a knot. Ask how each value was measured and whether the test used the same knot and method.

Mistake: assuming the polymer guarantees outdoor life

Correction: Look for explicit UV stabilization, exposure assumptions and storage instructions. Replace the line when inspection shows UV damage rather than relying on a material label.

Mistake: choosing the lowest price per pound

Correction: Calculate price per usable metre or completed task after matching runnage, gauge, strength, knot performance and UV treatment.

Mistake: substituting a general-purpose twine for a machine grade

Correction: Follow the baler or equipment maker’s compatibility guidance and test the actual feed and knot cycle before full deployment.

Mistake: treating catalog figures as universal

Correction: Keep each number attached to its named product, grade, date and test basis. Manufacturer values such as the JUTA examples are useful for comparing that catalog’s grades, not for predicting every PP or PE spool.

What to record when comparing two products

Specification Why it matters Question to ask the supplier
Resin type Separates PP, ordinary PE/HDPE and HMPE categories. What exact polymer and grade are used?
Construction Affects flexibility, abrasion, knot behavior and feeding. Is it monofilament, multifilament, twisted or braided?
Diameter or gauge Determines fit, handling and contact pressure. What is the measured diameter or gauge tolerance?
Linear/tensile strength Shows unknotted breaking force under the stated test. What units and test method were used?
Knot strength Reflects the actual capacity when tied. Which knot and test configuration were used?
UV stabilization Indicates whether outdoor exposure was considered. What exposure, region or test duration supports the claim?
Runnage Determines metres supplied and cost per usable length. How many metres are on each spool?
Equipment compatibility Prevents feed, knotter and tension failures. Which balers, dispensers or tools approve this grade?
Water behavior Important for nets, marine work and wet storage. Does the finished twine float, and what treatment affects that?
Recommended storage Reduces premature UV, heat and moisture damage. What temperature, light and packaging limits apply?

Bottom line for PP versus PE twine

Choose the task, load and environment first. PP is widely available in agricultural, garden, industrial, packaging and fishing-related grades, while agricultural products also include HDPE twine. Ordinary PE and HMPE must not be treated as interchangeable. Durability comes from the complete product—resin, construction, gauge, UV stabilization and handling—not from the two-word polymer label. Cost should be compared at matched performance using price per usable metre or completed task, because spool density and runnage make price per pound unreliable.
