Picnic raised $5 million in October 2024 to scale its commercial pizza-assembly technology, with Cercano Management leading the round and Seattle investor Andy Liu joining its board. The company later ran out of money, shut down in May 2026, and sold its assets and intellectual property to an undisclosed buyer.
What Picnic raised in 2024

Andy Liu, an Unlock co-leader, joined Picnic’s board of directors. The company said it planned to use the funding to scale operations, increase production, and meet customer demand.
Picnic had raised about $25 million in total by October 2024 and employed approximately 20 people, according to GeekWire’s reporting. Later reporting put Picnic’s lifetime fundraising at approximately $50 million.

What the pizza robot actually did
Picnic’s Pizza Station automated part of pizza production: assembling prepared crusts by dispensing sauce, cheese, pepperoni, and, in the larger configuration, additional toppings. The pizzas then still needed to be baked and finished by kitchen staff.
That distinction matters. Picnic made a pizza-assembly system, not a fully autonomous restaurant. Operators still had to prepare and load ingredients, manage dough and refrigeration, bake the pizzas, clean the equipment, monitor quality, and handle the rest of the food-service workflow.
The company marketed two configurations:
- Michelangelo, or “Mikey,” a two-base configuration.
- Leonardo, or “Leo,” a three-base configuration designed to support a broader topping mix.
Picnic’s website claimed output of up to 130 oven-ready pizzas per hour with one person. The 2024 funding coverage cited up to 100 customized 12-inch pizzas per hour. Those figures should be treated as company specifications rather than universal, independently verified performance. Capacity can vary with pizza size, recipe, topping mix, loading speed, and operating conditions. Picnic also said the system required no plumbing or major buildout and specified a 208-volt outlet.

Why investors saw an opportunity
Picnic positioned automation as a response to labor shortages, turnover, preparation costs, and the need for consistent high-volume production. Its stated pitch was not simply to eliminate employees, but to let operators reassign staff to customer service, quality control, and other tasks.
For a venue selling large numbers of pizzas during predictable rushes, automated assembly could potentially increase throughput and consistency. But the business case depended on more than the headline pizzas-per-hour number. Operators would also need to consider equipment cost, service, maintenance, ingredient loading, sanitation, downtime, replacement parts, and how well the machine fit the existing kitchen.
Liu told GeekWire that Unlock was attracted by CEO Michael Bridges, the broader momentum in robotics and food automation, and Picnic’s position in a labor-intensive industry. According to Unlock’s stated investment philosophy, the firm focuses on seed-stage technology companies in Seattle and Los Angeles.

Leadership changed after the funding round
Michael Bridges became Picnic’s CEO in May 2023 and was part of the leadership context surrounding the 2024 financing. Later reporting said Bridges departed in July 2025. Valeri Inting became CEO in September 2025 and pursued a hospitality-focused automated pizza concept, including a planned New York City pop-up that ultimately did not occur.
Picnic also grew to approximately 100 employees by 2023 before facing economic pressure and layoffs. The company struggled to raise additional capital.

Picnic executed a General Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors on May 11, 2026, after becoming unable to pay its debts. This is a state-law liquidation process outside federal bankruptcy. The company shut down and its assets and intellectual property were sold to an undisclosed buyer, according to later GeekWire reporting.

The buyer’s identity, purchase price, and plans for the technology were not disclosed. It therefore remains unknown whether Picnic’s equipment or intellectual property will be revived under new ownership.
Moto Pizza owner Lee Kindell said the restaurant was left with idle Picnic machines reportedly worth about $250,000. That figure is Kindell’s account, not an independently appraised valuation.
The lesson for restaurant operators and investors
Picnic’s trajectory illustrates the difference between technical feasibility and durable business execution. A machine can automate a useful kitchen task while its manufacturer remains vulnerable to high hardware costs, difficult deployments, limited service capacity, and changing funding markets.

- Who provides repairs, software updates, and replacement parts if the company closes?
- Can the equipment run manually or be repurposed during downtime?
- Who owns the data, software, and operating documentation?
- What happens to warranties, leases, deposits, and service contracts after a sale of assets?
- Does the claimed throughput match the venue’s actual recipes, peak demand, and staffing model?
- Is there a contingency plan if proprietary equipment becomes a stranded asset?
For investors, the financing also shows why capital raised should not be confused with revenue, profitability, valuation, or product-market fit. Picnic’s $5 million round supported the company for a period, but the available reporting does not establish that the financing itself caused or prevented the later shutdown.
What remains unknown
The identity of Picnic’s asset buyer, the sale price, the buyer’s intended use of the intellectual property, and whether the Pizza Station technology will return to the market remain undisclosed in the available reporting. Picnic’s website may remain accessible, but the company should not be treated as an operating vendor or as accepting new orders after its May 2026 shutdown.
