Short answer: Diesel usually costs less for fuel per kilometre because comparable diesel cars often use fewer litres, but it is not automatically the cheaper ownership choice. A diesel’s fuel saving can be outweighed by its purchase premium, servicing, emissions-system repairs, tax, insurance and depreciation. The right answer depends on your model, local prices, annual distance and the type of journeys you make.
What actually decides the cheaper car?
Compare the total cost of covering the same distance in equivalent petrol and diesel cars. Fuel is only the first line. Your calculation should include:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Real-world fuel consumed in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km).
- The local pump price for each fuel.
- Scheduled servicing and consumables such as oil, filters and spark plugs or glow plugs.
- Tyres and routine wear items.
- An allowance for model-specific repairs, including diesel emissions hardware where fitted.
- Vehicle tax, insurance and finance costs that differ between the two versions.
- Depreciation over the same ownership period.
- The extra amount paid to buy the diesel version.
A diesel is financially attractive when its cumulative running-cost saving repays that initial premium before you sell it. A low-mileage driver who mostly makes short urban trips may never reach that point, even if the diesel’s fuel economy looks excellent.
Calculate fuel cost per kilometre
Use the same units for both cars:
Fuel cost per kilometre = (consumption in L/100 km ÷ 100) × fuel price per litre

Illustrative UK calculation
The UK Competition and Markets Authority reported average pump prices at the end of August 2025 of 133.9 pence per litre for petrol and 141.9 pence per litre for diesel. Suppose, purely as an illustration, an equivalent petrol car uses 6.8 L/100 km and the diesel uses 5.2 L/100 km:
| Version | Illustrative consumption | Price used | Fuel cost per km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | 6.8 L/100 km | £1.339/L | £0.0911 (9.1p) |
| Diesel | 5.2 L/100 km | £1.419/L | £0.0738 (7.4p) |
On those assumptions the diesel saves about 1.73 pence per kilometre on fuel. At 12,000 miles (about 19,312 kilometres) a year, that is roughly £333 of annual fuel saving. These are example inputs, not a forecast for any particular model; substitute your own measured consumption and today’s local prices.

Why official economy figures can mislead
The European Commission’s 2024 analysis of about 600,000 cars found a substantial gap between laboratory type-approval results and road use for vehicles first registered in 2021. Average real-world fuel consumption and CO2 emissions were 23.7% above the official value for petrol cars and 18.1% above it for diesel cars.
“The first data from a sample of 600 000 cars indicates that the real-world fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from diesel and petrol vehicles on the road are around 20% higher than indicated by the official values from the standardised WLTP type-approval test used for regulatory purposes.”

The percentages describe averages for that registration year, not a guaranteed adjustment for every current model. Traffic, temperature, speed, payload, tyre pressure, automatic-transmission calibration and driving style all change consumption. The evidence does show why comparing both cars with the same real-world method is more reliable than comparing brochure numbers.
A 2024 Dutch government report, published in 2025, also found from fuel-card data that the difference between WLTP and real-world consumption increased again from 2022 for both petrol and diesel cars. Treat any online “miles per gallon” claim as a starting point until it matches the way you drive.
Maintenance: where diesel savings can disappear
There is no universal petrol-versus-diesel maintenance amount. Service intervals, labour rates and parts prices vary by model and country, so obtain the manufacturer’s schedule and written quotes for the exact cars.
Scheduled servicing
List every scheduled operation over the ownership period, not just the headline annual service. Depending on the model, this may include engine oil and filter changes, air and cabin filters, fuel filters, timing-belt or chain work, transmission-fluid changes, brake-fluid replacement and inspection charges. A diesel fuel filter can cost more than a petrol equivalent, while a petrol car may require more frequent spark-plug replacement. The schedule, rather than fuel type alone, determines the amount.
Diesel-specific repair exposure
Many modern diesels use additional hardware to control emissions. Depending on the chosen model and its documented equipment, potential repair items include a diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) valve, turbocharger, high-pressure injectors and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) components such as an AdBlue system. These are risk allowances, not guaranteed bills. Price them using local specialist and dealer estimates, and check warranty coverage and failure rates for the exact engine.

Short-trip suitability
Repeated low-speed journeys can prevent a DPF-equipped diesel from completing the regeneration strategy specified by its manufacturer. Before choosing one, read the owner’s handbook for minimum operating conditions and ask the dealer how the system behaves in your use pattern. If most trips are only a few kilometres, a petrol model may avoid that particular risk even when its fuel cost per kilometre is higher.

Include tyres, brakes, wiper blades and other wear items in both calculations. Vehicle weight, torque, wheel size and driving style matter more than the fuel label. Use the same replacement assumptions and tyre specification when comparing equivalent versions.
Purchase price, tax, insurance and depreciation
Fuel cost is a running expense; the purchase premium is paid upfront. Find the on-the-road price of comparable cars with the same trim, transmission and equipment, then subtract the expected sale or trade-in value after the same years and kilometres. A diesel that costs more to buy but retains more value may have a smaller net depreciation cost, while market demand can move in the opposite direction. Do not assume either outcome without current listings or valuation data for your region.
| Cost item | How to measure it | Why it can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Invoice or cash price for equivalent specification | Diesel engines and equipment may carry a premium |
| Depreciation | Purchase price minus expected sale value, divided by kilometres driven | Used-car demand, age, mileage and emissions policy affect resale |
| Tax | Local registration, annual or emissions-based charges | Rules differ by country, engine output, CO2 rating and date |
| Insurance | Quotes for the same driver, address, cover and excess | Repair costs, theft risk and power rating influence premiums |
| Finance | Total interest and fees over the same term | Different prices and rates change the financing burden |
HMRC advisory fuel rates illustrate why official mileage figures must be read in context. Rates effective from 1 September 2026 list petrol at 14p, 17p and 27p per mile and diesel at 15p, 16p and 22p per mile across three engine-size bands. These are tax-reimbursement rates, not a promise of your actual cost and not a complete ownership calculation; confirm the applicable engine band in the current HMRC table before using one.

Break-even kilometres = extra diesel purchase cost ÷ (petrol cost per kilometre − diesel cost per kilometre)
For the illustrative fuel figures above, the saving is £0.0173 per kilometre. If the diesel costs £2,500 more to buy and all other costs were identical, it would need about 145,000 kilometres (90,000 miles) to recover that premium. A £500 difference in annual tax, insurance, servicing or repairs would change the result materially, as would a different fuel-price spread. Add those items to the denominator only after converting them to a per-kilometre amount.
Convert annual costs correctly
- Add each annual fixed cost for petrol and diesel separately.
- Subtract diesel’s annual total from petrol’s annual total.
- Divide the difference by your planned annual kilometres to obtain the fixed-cost saving per kilometre.
- Add that figure to the fuel saving, then divide the purchase premium by the combined saving.
If the combined saving is zero or negative, there is no fuel-and-maintenance break-even point: the diesel does not recover its higher initial price at your assumed mileage and prices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many miles a year make diesel worthwhile?
There is no universal mileage threshold. The answer is the break-even distance divided by the number of years you expect to keep the car. A driver covering 20,000 miles annually may reach a break-even point that a 5,000-mile driver never does, but only if journeys are suitable and repair exposure remains controlled.
High-mileage motorway driver
Long, steady trips generally allow a diesel to deliver its consumption advantage and, where applicable, complete emissions-system regeneration. Compare motorway fuel logs with the diesel’s extra servicing and purchase costs; high mileage improves the chance of recovering the premium but does not guarantee it.

Low-mileage urban driver
Short, cold journeys reduce the practical economy benefit and can be a poor match for some diesel emissions systems. A petrol car’s higher fuel bill may be offset by a lower purchase price and simpler suitability for this use. Calculate using your actual trip mix rather than an advertised combined figure.
Mixed-use household
Separate business, commuting and leisure mileage if different drivers or reimbursement rules apply. Use a weighted consumption figure: multiply each trip type’s kilometres by its observed L/100 km, add the fuel used, then divide total litres by total kilometres.
A country-specific example: why market matters
Fuel prices, taxes and vehicle availability make results local. In a 2024 analysis of India’s road-transport sector, the Council on Energy, Environment and Water reported total-cost figures for three-wheelers of INR 2.69 per kilometre for diesel and INR 3.21 per kilometre for petrol. That is a segment- and country-specific result, not evidence that every Indian passenger car, or every diesel vehicle worldwide, is cheaper.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse local pump prices and ownership costs. The UK figures above are snapshots from particular dates, while the European Commission percentages relate to vehicles first registered in 2021. Exchange rates, fuel taxation and low-emission-zone rules can change the ranking in another market.
A practical worksheet you can complete
- Select true equivalents. Match body style, trim, transmission, power output and equipment as closely as possible.
- Record real consumption. Collect at least several full-tank observations for each car. Record litres added and kilometres travelled; avoid mixing dashboard estimates with pump measurements.
- Enter current fuel prices. Use the price you actually pay, including a consistent treatment of loyalty discounts or company fuel cards.
- Price the service schedule. Obtain itemised quotes for every scheduled interval over your planned ownership period.
- Set repair allowances. Use model-specific evidence and warranty terms for likely major components. Label these as probabilities or allowances, not certain costs.
- Add fixed ownership costs. Get insurance quotations, tax bills, finance charges and realistic resale values for your location.
- Divide by distance. Sum all costs for the same years and kilometres, then calculate cost per kilometre for each car.
- Stress-test the result. Recalculate with fuel prices 10–20% higher or lower, a different annual mileage and one major repair allowance. A decision that changes with a small assumption is not robust.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using list-price fuel economy. WLTP is a standardised test, not your route. Apply measured consumption for both cars.
- Comparing unequal cars. A larger diesel SUV against a small petrol hatchback answers a different question.
- Ignoring the purchase premium. Per-kilometre fuel savings do not repay an upfront difference until enough distance has been driven.
- Calling every diesel repair inevitable. DPF, EGR, turbo, injector and SCR costs depend on engine design, maintenance and usage. Treat them as model-specific risk.
- Leaving out depreciation. A low fuel bill can be overwhelmed by a larger loss in value.
- Mixing dates and currencies. Fuel prices and tax rules must be from the same market and a clearly stated date.
- Using reimbursement rates as ownership costs. HMRC advisory rates are administrative allowances and omit depreciation, finance and many repairs.
- Assuming annual mileage alone decides. Trip length, cold starts, traffic and motorway proportion affect both economy and mechanical suitability.
Decision rules you can apply
- Choose diesel when a comparable model shows a durable real-world fuel advantage, your annual distance is high enough to pass the calculated break-even point, and your journeys meet the manufacturer’s operating guidance.
- Choose petrol when the diesel premium is large, your mileage is low, journeys are predominantly short, or model-specific diesel repair exposure makes the total-cost range unattractive.
- Recalculate when fuel prices, tax rules, insurance quotes or your annual mileage changes. A correct decision this year can become uneconomic after a move, a job change or a major repair.
The cheapest fuel per kilometre is therefore not a fuel type in isolation. It is the lowest measured fuel cost plus maintenance, ownership and depreciation for one specific car, in one market, over one distance and time period.
