Personal Loans vs. Credit Cards: Which Is Cheaper for Borrowing?

Neither product is automatically cheaper. Compare the written offer for the same amount and payoff period: start with APR, then add every applicable fee, account for how interest is calculated, and test the total amount you expect to repay. A fixed-rate personal loan may be easier to finish on schedule, while a credit card can cost less when you qualify for a genuine interest-free period and pay the balance before interest accrues.

The cheapest choice depends on your actual offer and payoff plan

A personal loan and a credit card solve different borrowing problems. A personal installment loan gives you a lump sum and a fixed repayment schedule. A credit card gives you a revolving credit line that you can reuse, with a payment that changes as the balance changes. Either can be cheaper in a particular case.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) calls APR “the standard way to compare how much loans cost.” Use APR as the starting point because it puts interest and certain fees into an annual measure. It is not the finish line: a card may have several APRs, a promotional rate can expire, and the amount of interest you actually pay depends on the balance and how quickly you reduce it.

Make the comparison on identical terms. If you need $X and expect to be debt-free in Y months, compare the loan’s total scheduled payments and charges with the card’s interest and fees over that same period. A lower monthly payment by itself does not establish a lower cost.

How the two products work

Personal installment loans

You receive a defined amount, generally once, and repay it in fixed periodic installments. The CFPB describes the structure this way: “Personal installment loans must be paid back in periodic fixed amounts.” The agreement normally states the term, payment amount, due dates, APR and other charges.

The fixed schedule makes the payoff date predictable if you make every required payment. You cannot normally redraw principal after paying it down, so the balance falls according to the amortization schedule rather than rising with new purchases. Read the contract for any variable-rate provision, late-charge rules and conditions that could change the payment.

Credit cards

A credit card is revolving credit. You can borrow, repay and borrow again up to the account limit. The required minimum payment is not a payoff schedule; paying only that amount can keep a balance outstanding for a long time. Your interest rate and the balance can change as you use the card or as a variable APR changes.

A card can be inexpensive for a short purchase cycle if its terms provide a purchase grace period and you pay the statement balance in full by the due date. The grace period is account-specific and generally does not apply to every transaction type. Cash advances and some other transactions can have different APRs and fees.

Compare APR without overlooking what it leaves out

For a personal loan, the disclosed APR may include an origination charge and other fees imposed when the loan is made. For a card, use the APR that applies to the balance you will carry: purchases, cash advances and balance transfers may each have different rates. Record whether the rate is fixed, variable or promotional, and note the date a promotion ends.

Comparison point Personal loan Credit card
Rate to examine The loan’s disclosed APR and any variable-rate clause The APR for the specific balance category, plus any promotional expiration date
Repayment pattern Fixed periodic payment over a stated term Minimum payment plus your chosen payoff amount; interest may accrue daily
Typical charges to check Origination, documentation, late and optional insurance charges Annual, balance-transfer, late, cash-advance and other transaction fees
Access to additional credit Usually no redraw after disbursement Revolving access can remain available, which can also prolong debt
What determines total cost Total scheduled payments, upfront charges and any later charges Interest on the changing balance, fees, rate changes and the payoff date

APR comparisons are meaningful only when the amount and repayment period are comparable. A 12-month card balance and a 60-month loan are not equivalent even if their APRs look similar, because the loan is outstanding for much longer. Conversely, a card’s headline purchase APR may not describe a cash advance or transfer.

Personal-loan fees that can change the result

Ask the lender for a complete fee schedule and identify which charges are included in the APR. CFPB consumer guidance lists several possibilities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Origination fee: a charge for making the loan, sometimes deducted from the amount sent to you.
  • Documentation or administrative fee: a charge associated with processing the application or agreement.
  • Late fee: imposed when a required payment is not received under the contract’s timing rules.
  • Optional credit or disability insurance: coverage that may be offered with the loan and increases the cost if you elect it.
  • Non-filing insurance: a possible charge on some collateralized loans.

Confirm the net amount you will receive. If a fee is withheld from the disbursement, a loan advertised for a particular principal amount may provide less cash while still requiring repayment of the contracted principal. Do not accept optional insurance merely because it appears in the payment quote; ask for its price and whether declining it changes approval or terms.

How credit-card interest is calculated

Credit-card issuers may calculate interest daily. The issuer applies the applicable periodic rate to a balance determined under the account agreement, often using a daily balance or average daily balance method, and then posts the accumulated finance charge. Your statement and card agreement explain the exact method.

Different transaction types can carry different APRs. Purchases may have a grace period; cash advances commonly begin accruing interest without the same grace treatment; balance transfers can have their own rate and fee. Payments may also be allocated among balance categories according to the issuer’s rules. Check the agreement rather than assuming that a payment first eliminates the balance with the highest rate.

The CFPB summarizes the concept plainly: “A credit card’s interest rate is the price you pay for borrowing money.” If interest is accruing daily, reducing the balance earlier generally reduces the number of dollars exposed to that daily charge. New purchases can add to the balance and extend the payoff even when you are making every required minimum payment.

Balance transfers: a temporary-rate strategy with conditions

A promotional balance transfer can lower interest for a limited period, but it is not automatically free borrowing. Check four items before moving a balance:

  1. Transfer fee: determine whether the fee is a percentage of the amount transferred or another stated charge, and include it in your cost.
  2. Promotion end date: record the exact date the introductory rate expires and the APR that will apply afterward.
  3. Payment plan: calculate the amount needed to eliminate the transferred balance before the promotion ends. A minimum payment may leave a large balance for the higher post-promotion rate.
  4. New purchases: find out whether purchases receive a grace period while the transferred balance remains. The CFPB warns that new purchases may not receive a grace period in this situation.

Missing a required payment can trigger fees or affect promotional terms under the card agreement. Keep the old account’s payment instructions active until the transfer is confirmed and the old balance is shown as paid.

A step-by-step method to compare your offers

  1. Define the borrowing need. Write down the amount you actually need, the date you need it and the maximum time you can devote to repayment. Do not compare a loan for more cash than the card balance you intend to carry.
  2. Collect current written terms. Save the loan disclosure and the card’s pricing and terms. Record the APR, whether it is fixed, variable or promotional, the term, the minimum payment formula and every fee that could apply.
  3. Separate transaction categories. For a card, identify whether the balance will be a purchase, transfer, cash advance or another category. Use that category’s APR and fee, not a different rate shown elsewhere in the disclosure.
  4. Calculate the loan’s scheduled outflow. Multiply the fixed payment by the number of payments, then add charges not already reflected in the quoted APR. If an origination fee reduces the cash you receive, compare the cost with the net proceeds, not just the advertised principal.
  5. Model the card’s actual payoff. Choose a payment amount and date that fit your budget. Estimate interest over the period the balance remains outstanding, add annual, transfer, late or transaction fees that apply, and include the post-promotion APR if the balance will survive the introductory period.
  6. Use the same payoff horizon. If the loan runs 36 months, model the card balance for 36 months or state clearly that you intend to pay the card sooner. A shorter card payoff can produce less interest even when its APR is higher.
  7. Stress-test the plan. Ask what happens if income falls, a payment is late, the card APR rises, or you need to use the card again. A plan that works only if every month is perfect may be too fragile.
  8. Compare the totals and the risks. Choose the option with the lower expected total cost that you can realistically repay without new borrowing. Keep a record of the assumptions so you can revisit the decision if terms change.

Why a lower monthly payment can cost more

Consolidation loans often advertise a payment below the combined minimums on several cards. That can improve cash flow, but the payment may be lower because the new term is longer. You can pay more interest over the life of the loan even with a lower monthly bill. Origination charges and later rate changes can widen the difference.

Compare the total repayment and the debt-free date. If the loan lowers the payment, continue paying the old amount when your budget permits and direct the extra toward principal, provided the agreement does not impose a prepayment restriction. Do not assume that a lower payment means faster progress.

Which option fits common borrowing situations?

You can repay a purchase in the next statement cycle

A card with a purchase grace period may be the lowest-cost route when you pay the full statement balance by the due date and the purchase qualifies under the account terms. The effective interest cost can be zero, but annual fees or other charges still matter.

You need a fixed amount and a definite payoff date

A personal installment loan can provide a fixed payment and a stated term. It is useful when predictable installments help you avoid revolving the balance. Verify the APR, upfront deductions and late-fee rules before signing.

You can eliminate a balance during a documented promotion

A balance transfer may reduce interest during its promotional window. It is suitable only when the transfer fee is outweighed by the interest saved and your payment plan retires the balance before the higher rate begins.

Your income is irregular or the budget is already short

Neither product fixes a recurring spending shortfall. Adding a payment can make the next shortfall larger. Build a bare-bones budget, protect housing and essential bills, and consider free nonprofit credit counseling before taking on new borrowing.

You are consolidating several card balances

List each balance, APR, minimum payment, promotional end date and fee. A consolidation loan is worthwhile only if the total cost and repayment behavior improve. Stop adding new charges to cards being consolidated, or the old debt and the new loan can coexist.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing interest rate with APR: use APR for the initial comparison, then inspect which fees and assumptions it includes.
  • Using a loan’s monthly payment as the deciding number: calculate total scheduled payments and the term.
  • Applying a purchase APR to a cash advance: match the rate and fee to the transaction type.
  • Ignoring a promotion’s end date: put the expiration date in your calendar and set a payoff target before it.
  • Continuing to use a card after consolidation: new charges can erase the expected savings.
  • Paying only the minimum: minimums keep the account current but can extend repayment and increase interest.
  • Assuming approval terms are permanent: variable card APRs and promotional terms can change under the agreement.
  • Failing to read the disclosure: confirm net proceeds, optional insurance, late charges, payment allocation and any collateral requirement.

A practical worksheet

Put the following fields side by side for each option:

Field What to enter
Amount borrowed Cash you need, or the card balance you will actually carry
APR and rate type Quoted APR; fixed, variable or promotional status
Repayment period Loan term or the date you expect the card balance to reach zero
Required payment Loan installment or card minimum-payment formula
Your planned payment The amount you will pay each month, including any extra principal
Upfront and recurring fees Origination, transfer, annual, late, cash-advance and optional charges
Total expected outflow All payments plus fees over the chosen payoff period
Failure scenario What a late payment, rate increase or new borrowing would do

Keep the worksheet with the account disclosures. If an offer changes, update the APR, fees or payoff date rather than relying on the original quote.

When to seek help instead of another loan

If minimum payments consume money needed for essentials, contact creditors early and review your budget. The CFPB’s debt-consolidation guidance points consumers toward free nonprofit credit counseling when debt is difficult to manage. A counselor can help organize balances and payments; verify that the service is genuinely nonprofit and understand any charges before enrolling.

Borrowing more can be appropriate for a one-time expense with a credible payoff plan. It is not a substitute for correcting a persistent gap between income and spending. Preserve emergency cash where possible, avoid late payments and do not close or transfer accounts until you understand the effect on your obligations and promotional terms.

What current CFPB guidance does—and does not—tell you

CFPB consumer pages reviewed in 2024 and 2026 explain APR, installment-loan fees, card-interest calculations and consolidation choices. They do not establish a universal market rate or a percentage by which one product is cheaper. Offers vary by borrower, lender, issuer, credit profile, region and date.

Use the current disclosures and agreements for your own accounts. The defensible answer to “which is cheaper?” is the option that produces the lower total cost for your amount and payoff period while remaining workable if conditions change.
