Pending and posted are stages of the same credit-card transaction. A pending charge means the issuer has approved an authorization but the merchant has not finished submitting the transaction for final processing. A posted charge has completed that process and is recorded as finalized account activity. While a charge is pending, its amount can change or disappear, and it can reduce available credit before it appears in the account balance. Once it posts, the amount is generally final unless you obtain a refund or dispute it.
The practical distinction matters when you are checking how much credit remains, reconciling a statement, deciding whether a charge is wrong, or reporting possible fraud. Timing is not universal: issuer guidance gives estimates ranging from about 72 hours to five business days for ordinary transactions, while some merchant types take longer.

Pending vs. posted credit card charges at a glance
| Question | Pending charge | Posted charge |
|---|---|---|
| What stage is it? | The authorization has been approved, but the merchant’s final transaction has not completed processing. | The merchant’s completed transaction has been processed and recorded by the issuer. |
| Can the amount change? | Yes. It may be an estimate, temporary hold, or an amount that changes when a tip or final total is submitted. | Usually not, although a later refund, adjustment, or dispute can change what you ultimately owe. |
| What happens to available credit? | Often reduced immediately by the authorized amount; treatment can vary by issuer. | The finalized amount is included in the account activity used to calculate the balance. |
| What happens to the account balance? | Some issuers show it separately from the balance until finalization. | It is included in the posted balance and statement activity. |
| How long does it last? | Issuer estimates commonly range from roughly 72 hours to three-to-five business days for everyday purchases, with exceptions. | It remains in your account history and appears on the applicable statement. |
| What can you do if there is a problem? | Ask the merchant about a recognized issue; report an unauthorized transaction to the issuer promptly. | Contact the merchant for an ordinary billing or service problem, then use your issuer’s dispute process if it is not resolved. |
“Pending” and “posted” are therefore sequential statuses, not competing kinds of charges. The exact labels, balance calculations, and time frames can differ among issuers and transaction types.
How a card payment moves from authorization to posting
A card payment normally passes through several parties. Chase describes the general route as the merchant’s terminal sending a request to the merchant’s bank, through the card network, to the card issuer. The issuer checks the account and available credit and returns an approval or decline. An approval creates a temporary hold while the transaction awaits completion. After the merchant finalizes and submits the transaction, the network and issuer process it as a posted item. See Chase’s explanation of the spending flow.

- Issuer decision: The issuer verifies that the account is valid and that sufficient credit is available. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that authorization tells the merchant the account is valid and has enough available credit; its answer was last reviewed August 28, 2020. Read the CFPB explanation of authorization.
- Temporary hold: The approved amount is marked as pending. This protects the merchant from an authorization being used repeatedly and reserves credit while the merchant completes the sale.
- Completion and posting: The merchant sends its final transaction information. The issuer replaces the authorization with a posted charge, releases or adjusts the hold, and records the transaction in account activity.
This is the usual pattern, not a guarantee that every app displays each step identically. A merchant can submit transactions in batches, and weekends, holidays, network handling, and the transaction category can alter when the final item appears.
Why a pending amount can differ from the posted amount
The authorization is sometimes based on information the merchant cannot know at the moment you tap, insert, or enter your card. A pending figure is consequently not always the final purchase price.
Restaurant and delivery tips
A restaurant may authorize the meal subtotal before you add a tip. The pending amount can show only the initial authorization, then post at a higher total after the merchant submits the signed or digital tip. A tip can also be reduced or removed before final submission.
Fuel pumps
A pay-at-the-pump terminal may request a preauthorization before you know how many gallons you will buy. The pending hold can be different from the completed fuel purchase, and the issuer releases or adjusts the excess when the merchant sends the final amount.
Hotels and rental cars
Hotels and rental-car companies may authorize an estimated room, rental, tax, or incidental amount. The final charge can include actual usage or additional services, while unused portions of the authorization are released. Capital One identifies restaurant tips, gas-pump authorizations, and estimated hotel or rental-car incidentals as situations in which the posted amount can differ from the pending amount. Its current help guidance is at Capital One’s pending-transactions page.

Small verification authorizations
Some merchants temporarily authorize a small amount to verify that a card works. If the merchant never completes a sale, the authorization can disappear rather than become a posted purchase. A disappearing pending item does not by itself prove that money was permanently charged.
How pending charges affect available credit and your balance
Available credit is the amount you can generally use before reaching your credit limit; the account balance is the amount the issuer has recorded as owed. They can move at different times.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCapital One says pending amounts reduce available credit immediately and enter the account balance after finalization. For example, with a $2,000 limit and a $300 pending hotel authorization, your available credit may fall to $1,700 even though the posted balance has not yet increased by $300. If the hotel later submits $220, the final charge and the released portion of the hold can change both figures. See the issuer’s pending-transaction guidance.
Chase notes that balance treatment can vary, so the numbers in an issuer’s app may not match another issuer’s display. Check the labels for “available credit,” “current balance,” “pending,” and “posted,” rather than assuming that one figure includes every authorization. A pending amount can also affect your ability to make another purchase even when the current balance appears unchanged.
How long does a pending transaction take to post?
No single deadline applies to every credit-card transaction. The following figures are issuer-published estimates, not independent statistics or guarantees.

| Issuer guidance | Estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Capital One | Usually within 72 hours; sometimes up to five days | General help-center estimate accessed October 13, 2026. |
| Chase | Three to five business days for everyday transactions | Chase says the merchant, banks, card network, and transaction type can affect timing; guidance accessed October 13, 2026. |
| Chase dispute instructions | One to three business days before a pending Chase credit-card charge generally posts | This estimate appears in Chase’s own dispute-process instructions and is not a universal rule; accessed October 13, 2026. |
Business-day estimates exclude at least some weekends and holidays, and they describe ordinary transactions rather than every hotel, rental-car, fuel, subscription, or international authorization. A merchant may also wait to submit a batch, or an issuer may keep an authorization visible while it verifies a reversal.
What to do when a recognized pending charge looks wrong
First decide whether the transaction is familiar and whether the apparent error could be explained by the merchant’s finalization process.
- Check the merchant name and date: A statement descriptor can differ from the storefront name, especially for a parent company, payment processor, hotel group, or delivery service.
- Compare the amount with the receipt: Look for a restaurant tip, fuel preauthorization, hotel incidental hold, rental-car deposit, tax, or currency-conversion difference.
- Ask the merchant: The merchant created the authorization and is usually the party that can explain an estimate, correct a duplicate, or release an unused hold.
- Wait for finalization when the issue is only a temporary estimate: Do not treat a pending hold as the final bill until the merchant submits the completed transaction.
- Escalate after posting if necessary: If the final amount is wrong or the promised goods or service were not delivered, use the issuer’s dispute procedure after checking its documentation requirements and deadline.
A merchant cannot always remove a pending authorization instantly. It may need to send a reversal, and the issuer may need additional time to reflect that reversal. Keep the receipt, correspondence, cancellation number, and any evidence of the promised refund.
What to do about an unauthorized pending charge
If you do not recognize the transaction and neither you nor an authorized user made it, contact the card issuer promptly. Do not wait for the item to post merely because it is still labeled pending. Capital One specifically advises starting a fraud claim immediately for a charge the cardholder did not authorize; its instructions are in the pending-transactions help article.
- Use the issuer’s fraud or card-security number, secure message channel, or app control.
- State that the transaction is unauthorized and give the merchant name, amount, date, and status.
- Follow instructions about locking or replacing the card and reviewing other recent activity.
- Save the case number and ask whether the issuer wants any written statement or additional documentation.
Fraud reporting and a billing dispute are not always handled the same way. An unauthorized transaction may require immediate account-security action, whereas a recognized purchase with a wrong amount is generally first handled with the merchant and then through the issuer’s dispute process.

How to dispute a posted charge
Once a recognized transaction posts, you can evaluate it against the receipt, contract, cancellation terms, or service delivered. Contacting the merchant first is often the fastest route for a duplicate, incorrect tip, returned item, or service problem. Ask for a written confirmation when the merchant agrees to refund or correct the charge.
If the merchant does not resolve the matter, follow the issuer’s instructions for a credit-card dispute. Chase’s dispute guidance requires the charge to be posted and says its process should be submitted within 60 days of the transaction first appearing on the statement. That is Chase’s rule for its process, not a deadline that automatically applies to every issuer, so check the terms and notices for your own card. The instructions are at Chase’s credit-card dispute page.
Prepare a concise evidence package:
- Receipt, order confirmation, or contract showing the expected amount.
- Dates and details of your contact with the merchant.
- Cancellation, return, delivery, or service records.
- Photos, screenshots, or correspondence that directly support the claimed error.
Continue making at least the required payment on undisputed amounts while the issuer reviews the claim. The issuer may provide separate instructions for a disputed amount, so follow those instructions rather than withholding an entire payment on your own.
When a pending charge stays pending unusually long
A prolonged pending status does not automatically mean that the charge is fraudulent or that you will be billed twice. It can reflect a merchant that has not completed the transaction, an authorization that was not properly reversed, or a category with longer settlement practices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Review the transaction details: Note the authorization date, merchant descriptor, amount, and whether a second posted item later appears.
- Contact the merchant first: Ask whether the sale was completed, canceled, or reversed and request that the merchant submit a correction or release.
- Contact the issuer: Ask how long that authorization can remain, whether it is reducing available credit, and what account-specific action is available.
- Watch for a duplicate: Compare the pending item with posted activity before paying or reporting the same purchase twice.
- Document the outcome: Keep names, dates, reference numbers, and promised release dates.
Chase advises contacting the merchant first for a pending-transaction problem because the transaction originates there, then asking the issuer about its process if the merchant cannot resolve it. Timing still depends on the issuer and transaction type; its general explanation is at Chase’s pending-transactions guidance.

Examples of how the two statuses behave
Restaurant bill with a tip
You authorize $80 at the table. The app shows $80 pending, so available credit falls by that amount. After you add a $16 tip, the restaurant submits $96. The pending entry is replaced or adjusted and $96 posts.
Hotel authorization larger than the room charge
A hotel authorizes $500 for a two-night stay and incidentals. You spend $420. The hotel submits $420, and the unused $80 is released. During the stay, the $500 hold can reduce available credit even though the final posted balance will be $420.
Canceled online order
An online store obtains authorization but cancels before shipment. The charge may remain pending temporarily, then disappear when the authorization expires or the merchant sends a reversal. If a posted charge remains after cancellation, contact the merchant and then use the issuer’s dispute process if needed.

You see a merchant you do not recognize and have no receipt or authorized-user explanation. Because an unauthorized transaction can require card-security action before posting, notify the issuer immediately rather than waiting for the status to change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating pending as a final bill: A hold can be an estimate, especially for tips, fuel, hotels, and rentals.
- Assuming the current balance equals remaining spending power: Pending authorizations may already reduce available credit.
- Waiting to report suspected fraud: Report an unauthorized transaction as soon as you notice it.
- Disputing a temporary hold as a wrong final amount: Ask the merchant what the authorization represents and wait for finalization when appropriate.
- Using another issuer’s deadline: Dispute windows and documentation rules vary; a Chase deadline should not be treated as your card’s deadline without checking.
- Paying a duplicate charge without checking status: Compare pending and posted entries, merchant descriptors, dates, and amounts first.
A quick decision checklist
- Do you recognize the merchant and purchase?
- Is the amount consistent with a tip, deposit, fuel hold, hotel or rental estimate, tax, or currency conversion?
- Has available credit changed even though the posted balance has not?
- Has the charge remained pending beyond the issuer’s stated estimate for that transaction type?
- If recognized but wrong, have you contacted the merchant and saved the response?
- If unauthorized, have you contacted the issuer immediately?
- If posted and unresolved, have you checked your issuer’s dispute deadline and submission rules?
Keeping these questions separate prevents the most common confusion: a pending authorization is a temporary stage in processing, while a posted charge is the finalized record that generally belongs in your statement reconciliation.
