PayPal is not newly adding Apple Pay support in 2026. PayPal announced Apple-related plans in 2022, made eligible PayPal and Venmo cards available in Apple Wallet during 2023, and began supporting Apple Pay acceptance through selected merchant products that year. Current PayPal documentation confirms that the feature remains available, but “PayPal and Apple Pay support” can mean three different things: adding a PayPal-issued card to Apple Wallet, using Apple Pay at a PayPal-powered checkout, or enabling Apple Pay as a merchant.
Which option works for you depends on your card, device, country, merchant integration and account eligibility.

The three ways PayPal and Apple Pay work together
| Feature | Who uses it? | What happens? |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal card in Apple Wallet | Consumers | An eligible PayPal debit or credit card is added to Apple Pay and used in stores, apps or online. |
| Apple Pay at PayPal checkout | Shoppers | A merchant using a supported PayPal integration displays an Apple Pay payment button. |
| Apple Pay acceptance through PayPal | Merchants | A business enables Apple Pay through products such as Expanded Checkout, Payment Links, Buttons or supported invoicing and point-of-sale tools. |
These are separate capabilities. Adding a PayPal card to Apple Wallet does not mean your PayPal balance has become a general Apple Pay funding source. Likewise, seeing an Apple Pay button on a merchant’s PayPal-powered checkout does not necessarily mean the purchase is charged to a PayPal account.

Can you add a PayPal card to Apple Pay?
Usually, yes—if you have an eligible PayPal-issued card and a supported Apple device, account and region. PayPal lists the PayPal Cashback Mastercard, PayPal Extras Mastercard, PayPal Credit Card, PayPal Debit Mastercard and PayPal Business Debit Mastercard among supported card categories. Eligibility can vary by card, issuer, country, device and account.
#1 Best Overall
- An intuitive interface to easily accept payments and manage your sales.
- Strong, reliable Wi-Fi connection. Free SIM card and mobile data so you can process payments anywhere.
- Great battery capability with an additional charging station.
- A truly portable device. Stay in control of your business, wherever you go.
- Support when you need it. Get in touch with our US-based support through phone, email and chat.
PayPal’s current consumer page also says supported users may be able to view PayPal balance information, recent transactions and customer-service details in Apple Wallet. That does not mean that an ordinary PayPal balance can be added to Apple Pay in the same way as a debit or credit card. The documented workflow centers on an eligible PayPal card, particularly the PayPal Debit Card. See PayPal’s eligibility guidance and its Apple Pay setup page.
How to add a PayPal card to Apple Wallet
Using the PayPal app
- Open the PayPal app.
- Open Accounts or Me. The label may differ by app version.
- Select your PayPal card, or the balance tile showing the PayPal debit-card artwork.
- Choose Manage or open the card details.
- Tap Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Apple Pay.
- Complete Apple’s verification prompts.
- Open Apple Wallet to confirm the card and optionally make it your default payment card.
Using Apple Wallet directly
- Open Apple Wallet on your iPhone.
- Tap the + button.
- Choose to add a debit or credit card.
- Follow the verification instructions.
- Complete any verification required by PayPal or the card issuer.
Apple’s device, operating-system, Apple Account and regional requirements also apply. Because those requirements change, check Apple’s current compatibility information if Wallet does not recognize the card. PayPal’s own documentation warns that supported cards and features are not available on every device.
How to pay with a PayPal card through Apple Pay
In a store
The store must accept contactless payments. To pay with an eligible PayPal card in Apple Wallet:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Double-click the iPhone’s side button.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode.
- Hold the iPhone near the contactless reader.
- Wait for the payment confirmation.
The transaction uses the PayPal-issued card provisioned in Apple Wallet. It is not automatically a PayPal checkout transaction or a direct withdrawal from an unlinked PayPal balance.
Online or in an app
PayPal says eligible cards in Apple Wallet can be used for purchases in apps and online, including supported Safari checkouts. The merchant must offer Apple Pay, and the device and browser must support the payment flow. At a separate merchant checkout, you may also see Apple Pay alongside PayPal if the business uses a compatible PayPal integration.
Rewards, fees and purchase protection
Rewards and cashback
PayPal said in its 2023 announcement that eligible PayPal and Venmo cardholders could continue earning applicable cashback and rewards when using Apple Pay. That is not a universal promise for every card or program: rewards remain subject to the card’s terms, exclusions and account status. Check the specific card agreement before assuming a particular purchase will qualify. The announcement is available from PayPal.

- ACTIVATION REQUIRED - SCAN THE QR CODE IN THE BOX: This reader only accepts payments after it is activated on a Nayax account. Scan the QR code on the yellow card inside the box and submit your email and device serial number. We register the reader with Nayax for you.
- HOW LONG ACTIVATION TAKES: Already a Nayax customer? We transfer the reader to your existing account. New to Nayax? You will receive a Nayax application (business details and bank account for weekly payouts). Nayax bank approval takes about 7 business days. The reader stays inactive until then - this is normal, not a defect.
- NAYAX SERVICE FEES: Nayax bills its monthly service and card-processing fees directly to you after activation. These fees are not included in this purchase.
- MDB VERSION - CHECK YOUR MACHINE: Includes an MDB cable for machines with an MDB port, such as most modern vending, snack and drink machines and many claw, arcade and laundry machines. For coin-pulse machines without an MDB port, choose the Pulse version.
- FEATURES: Accepts EMV chip, contactless/NFC and magstripe cards plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Built-in 4G LTE (no Wi-Fi needed), 2.4 inch color touchscreen, real-time sales and telemetry in the Nayax app, loyalty and discount tools.
Fees
PayPal’s merchant payment-method page says Apple Pay does not add an additional Apple Pay fee. That does not mean a merchant’s total processing cost is zero. Normal PayPal processing charges, product pricing, currency-conversion costs and contractual terms may still apply. Fees vary by country, product, integration and agreement, so merchants should verify pricing during signup.

Do not assume that every Apple Pay transaction receives exactly the same PayPal Wallet treatment. PayPal distinguishes payment methods processed outside its Wallet, including Apple Pay payments on invoices, and says disputes involving those methods may need to be handled with the merchant or the outside payment provider. Review the applicable terms before choosing Apple Pay when PayPal Purchase Protection is an important consideration. See PayPal’s invoice payment-method guidance.
If “Add to Apple Wallet” is missing
Common explanations include:
- The card type is not eligible.
- The card, account or country is not supported.
- The device does not meet Apple Pay requirements.
- Issuer verification is required or provisioning was blocked.
- The PayPal app’s current interface uses different labels.
- The feature is not enabled for that particular card or account.
Check the card details in PayPal, try Apple Wallet’s + flow, update PayPal and iOS, and complete any issuer verification. If PayPal specifically lists the card as eligible but provisioning still fails, contact PayPal or the card issuer. Updating software is a sensible troubleshooting step, but reinstalling the app or changing your billing address is not a guaranteed fix.
If the card is added but the payment is declined
Successful provisioning does not guarantee that every later authorization will succeed. A payment can be declined because of issuer fraud controls, the card’s status, available credit or balance, merchant-category restrictions, device or regional limitations, or a merchant that does not accept the relevant card network.
Some user reports in July and August 2026 described PayPal cards being added successfully but later declined. Those reports indicate a possible failure mode, not proof of a widespread outage or an officially confirmed defect. Check the card’s status and available funds, try another supported payment method, and ask PayPal or the issuer which party declined the authorization.

For shoppers, Apple Pay only appears when the merchant’s integration, country, currency, device and browser support the flow. A PayPal account alone cannot make the button appear.

- No extra fees or monthly minimums, you’ll only pay a small transaction fee of 2.6% + 10 each time you use your device
- Connects with the free SumUp mobile app (required for use), giving you full control of payments, setup, and reporting
- Use the printer as a battery pack to kick in when your Solo’s running out of power. Both the reader and the printer stay ready to go with double fast charging and optimal power distribution
- Accept all major payment types from chip and contactless to Google Pay and Apple Pay
- View your transaction history, issue refunds and enable smart tipping directly on the device
Possible causes include:
- The merchant has not enabled Apple Pay.
- The website domain has not been registered or verified.
- The integration does not support Apple Pay.
- The buyer or merchant is in an unsupported country or currency.
- The device or browser cannot complete the Apple Pay flow.
- A partner ecommerce platform controls which payment methods are available.
PayPal explicitly says payment-method availability varies by geography and integration. Merchants should check PayPal’s payment-method documentation rather than assume that every PayPal checkout includes Apple Pay.

Expanded Checkout
PayPal Expanded Checkout is intended for businesses that want to offer cards, PayPal methods, Apple Pay and Google Pay through a supported checkout integration. PayPal’s documented setup path is:
- Complete PayPal product onboarding.
- Open Account Settings.
- Select Payment methods.
- Select Get Started beside Apple Pay.
- Enter the business website.
- Select Register Domain.
- Select Done.
- Follow the Developer Portal instructions for testing and deployment.
This is a merchant setting, not a consumer switch. PayPal’s Expanded Checkout guidance explains the onboarding, domain-registration and testing requirements. Developers can use PayPal’s documented Apple Pay flow with the JavaScript SDK and Orders v2 API through its alternative payment methods documentation.
Payment Links and Buttons
PayPal’s Payment Links and Buttons documentation lists Apple Pay alongside PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo and major debit and credit cards. These hosted options can suit freelancers, creators, nonprofits and small businesses that need a simple checkout without building a complete custom payment flow. Payment Links are reusable and can be used for a product, service, donation or tip. See PayPal’s Payment Links and Buttons overview.
Invoices
Invoices are directed to a specific customer and can support reminders, partial payments and invoice tracking. Apple Pay may be available as an invoice payment method, but merchants should not assume that invoice payments receive identical protection or processing treatment to payments made inside the PayPal Wallet.
Point of sale
PayPal point-of-sale products and card readers can accept mobile wallets, including Apple Pay, where the product and market support them. This is relevant to physical retailers and service businesses, not online-only sellers. Hardware availability and transaction rates vary and should be verified on PayPal’s current Point of Sale page.

Recurring payments and subscriptions
One-time Apple Pay acceptance does not automatically prove that subscriptions are configured correctly. PayPal says merchants must complete Apple Pay onboarding for both one-time and recurring payments. If one-time Apple Pay is already integrated, recurring payments may require changes to the JavaScript SDK payload and additional testing. Confirm the recurring-payment requirements before advertising Apple Pay for a subscription service.
Which option makes sense?
For consumers
Apple Pay with a PayPal card is useful if you already use an eligible PayPal debit or credit card, want contactless payments, prefer Face ID or Touch ID, or want to avoid manually entering card details in supported apps and websites.
It is less suitable if your main goal is to spend an ordinary PayPal balance without a PayPal debit card, use Android as your primary device, shop with merchants that do not accept contactless payments, or rely on PayPal Wallet-specific protections. PayPal and Venmo card availability should be checked separately rather than treated as identical.
For merchants
PayPal’s Apple Pay support can be useful when you already use PayPal infrastructure and want several payment methods in one checkout, or when you need hosted links and buttons. The trade-off is setup complexity: eligibility varies by region and integration, Expanded Checkout may require onboarding and technical work, domains may need registration, and payment methods can differ by currency and buyer device.
Adding Apple Pay does not replace cards, PayPal or other relevant payment methods. Before signing up, verify current pricing, settlement, refunds, recurring billing, disputes and seller-protection treatment against your specific PayPal agreement. Do not assume that joining PayPal automatically enables Apple Pay.
What changed—and what did not?
The “finally adding” framing appears to recycle earlier developments. PayPal announced Apple-related plans on November 3, 2022, including plans involving PayPal and Venmo cards, online checkout and Tap to Pay on iPhone, as reported by 9to5Mac. PayPal announced Apple Pay acceptance for eligible small-business merchants using its Complete Payments or Advanced Checkout offering on April 4, 2023, and eligible PayPal and Venmo cards became available to add to Apple Wallet during September and October 2023.
The current reality is therefore not one new universal launch. It is an established set of consumer and merchant features whose availability still depends on eligibility, geography, device, card and integration. The article that prompted this question is dated May 10, 2026, but its headline should not be read as evidence of a newly introduced, universally available PayPal feature.
