Paying Rent for Yourself and Your Parents? When Can You Claim HRA for More Than One Home?

Paying rent for your parents’ separate home does not, by itself, appear to qualify that rent for your House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption. Under the published Income Tax Department guidance, the employee must actually pay rent for residential accommodation the employee occupies. The exemption is also limited to the period of that occupancy and capped by a three-part calculation.

The official material does not set out a general one-property maximum, but it also does not expressly confirm that rent for multiple homes can be combined. A parent’s home, a shared home, and two homes occupied by the employee are different situations; the occupancy facts matter.

Does rent for your parents’ home qualify for your HRA exemption?

For the section 10(13A) framework described in the Income Tax Department’s Rule 2A and salaried-employee guidance, HRA relief is linked to rent actually paid for residential accommodation occupied by the employee. The department’s guidance says the exemption is allowed when the employee occupies accommodation they do not own and actually pays rent for it.

That wording does not support adding rent paid only for a separate home occupied by your parents to your own qualifying rent. Paying the landlord, or being named in rental paperwork, is not on its own the same as occupying the accommodation. The published sources do not provide a direct ruling for every family arrangement, including cases where the employee and parents share a home, so those facts should not be treated as settled by a general rule.

XKDOUS 2 Pack Money and Rent Receipt Book, 2-Part Carbonless
  • Two-Part Carbonless Receipt Book: Each receipt book has 50 sets of receipts, each with a white/light yellow section and the yellow section is kept in the receipt book to maintain detailed records.
  • Consecutive Numbering: Pre-printed numbers on each receipt help you quickly navigate through your order.
  • Wraparound Divider: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each receipt book to be used between each two-part sales order to prevent written content from rubbing on subsequent copies of receipts, which can lead to wasted receipts.
  • 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): 50 sets of sequentially numbered carbonless receipt books are supplied with each receipt book. You can easily tear off each page of customer receipts and save the yellow part in the receipt book.
  • Versatile Use: These receipt books with carbon copies are perfect for offices, businesses, homes, other cash transactions and more.

How is the HRA exemption calculated?

Under Rule 2A’s section 10(13A) calculation, the exemption is the lowest of these three amounts for the relevant period:

  1. The actual HRA received for that period.
  2. Rent actually paid for qualifying accommodation occupied by the employee, minus 10% of salary for that period.
  3. 50% of salary for accommodation in Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi, or Madras, or 40% of salary elsewhere.

These are the statutory calculation inputs stated in the Income Tax Department’s Rule 2A and allowance guidance. They are not a blanket allowance for all rent paid by or on behalf of the employee. Rent for a parents-only home should not be included in the qualifying-rent figure without a basis showing that the employee occupies that accommodation and meets the other conditions.

What if you pay rent for two properties?

Do not assume that the number of rent payments determines the exemption. The relevant questions are who occupies each home, whether you actually pay rent for accommodation you occupy, the dates you occupy it, the HRA and salary for those periods, the city, and the tax rules applicable to the year.

The retrieved official rule does not state a general maximum of one property, but it does not expressly establish how to aggregate two concurrent employee-occupied residences either. If you occupy one home and pay rent for a second home used only by your parents, the published occupancy wording does not support treating the second home’s rent as your qualifying rent. Where you genuinely occupy two rented homes, do not assume their rents can be combined: the available guidance does not resolve that specific arrangement.

Which occupancy period counts?

The exemption applies for the period the employee occupied the rented accommodation. If your occupancy, rent, salary, or HRA changes during the year, assess the relevant period rather than treating the full year as one unchanged claim. Rent for months before you occupied the home, or after you stopped occupying it, is not supported by the occupancy-period rule.

What records should you keep?

The Income Tax Department’s ITR-4 online manual includes HRA exemption information in its filing workflow. The notified Income-tax Rules, 2026 include HRA particulars for the landlord’s name and address, PAN, Aadhaar, relationship, if any, and rent paid. Keep records that accurately reflect the home, landlord, payments, and your occupancy period.

Providing landlord or relationship details is a reporting requirement; it does not itself establish eligibility. The documentation does not cure a failure to meet the occupancy and actual-rent conditions. The available material does not say that a relationship with the landlord automatically disqualifies a claim.

Does the HRA answer change under the new tax regime?

The Income Tax Department’s FAQ says HRA exemption under section 10(13A) is unavailable in the new regime, but that answer is framed around assessment year 2024–25 and the Income-tax Act, 1961. The department has also published the Income-tax Act, 2025 and notified Income-tax Rules, 2026. The official material available here does not conclusively reconcile the older FAQ with the rules for tax year 2026–27.
