Palantir and Snowflake both sell technology for enterprise data and AI, but they monetize it differently. Palantir primarily sells software platforms through one-to-five-year contracts and reported $1.935 billion of Q2 2026 revenue with $912 million of GAAP operating income. Snowflake primarily charges for customers’ consumption of compute, storage, and data transfer; it reported $1.55 billion of Q2 FY2027 total revenue, $1.492 billion of product revenue, and a $263 million GAAP operating loss. Snowflake grew product revenue 37% year over year, while Palantir’s reported-quarter revenue increased approximately 93% from the filed figures. Those results are not a complete investment verdict: the quarters end about a month apart, the revenue measures differ, and no synchronized October 13, 2026 share prices or diluted share counts are available here to support a current valuation ranking.
The short answer
Palantir is the more contract-led and currently profitable business in the latest periods available. Its Gotham, Foundry, Apollo, and Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) products are generally sold through enterprise and government relationships lasting one to five years, with revenue usually recognized ratably over the contract term. Snowflake is a consumption-led cloud data platform: customers pay as they use compute, storage, and data-transfer resources, so reported revenue follows usage rather than a fixed ratable subscription schedule.

That distinction changes how to read growth. Palantir’s Q2 2026 revenue of $1.935 billion was about 93% above Q2 2025 revenue of $1.004 billion, calculated as (1.935464 ÷ 1.003697) − 1 from the amounts in its filing. Snowflake’s Q2 FY2027 product revenue was $1.492 billion, up 37% year over year; total revenue was $1.55 billion. Palantir also reported $912 million of GAAP operating income, while Snowflake reported a $263 million GAAP operating loss.

Investors should not infer that Palantir is cheaper or more expensive from those figures alone. A defensible comparison requires same-date prices, diluted share counts, cash and debt, and the same trailing or forward denominator. The cited company filings and releases do not contain those synchronized market inputs.

How Palantir makes money
Four integrated platforms
Palantir describes its software as a way for organizations to integrate data, decisions, and operations at scale. Its principal platforms are:
- Gotham: a platform associated with government and defense missions.
- Foundry: data management, logic authoring, ontology-based modeling, analytics, and workflow development.
- Apollo: software for deploying and managing Palantir platforms across varied environments.
- Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP): tooling and applications for AI workflows, including connections to third-party large language models.
These descriptions come from Palantir’s fiscal-2025 Form 10-K, which says, “We build software that empowers organizations to effectively integrate our data, decisions, and operations at scale.” That is the company’s characterization of its mission, not an independent assessment of product performance. The filing is available at Palantir’s FY2025 Form 10-K.
Contract terms and revenue recognition
Palantir generally sells one-to-five-year contracts and usually recognizes the related revenue ratably over the contract term. A customer signing a multiyear agreement therefore does not normally create an equivalent one-day revenue spike; the accounting spreads the performance obligation across the period in which Palantir provides the service.

Many contracts include termination-for-convenience provisions. That means a signed contract is not always an irrevocable commitment for the full nominal term. Implementations can also be complex and lengthy, and the company identifies long, unpredictable sales cycles and the need to acquire, retain, and expand customers as business risks.
For investors, this model creates a distinction between bookings, contract value and recognized revenue. A large agreement can support future visibility without all of its value appearing in the current quarter. Conversely, a delayed implementation or an early termination can affect the timing and amount of revenue that ultimately reaches the income statement.
Reported scale and profitability
For fiscal 2025, Palantir reported $4.48 billion of revenue, up 56% year over year, and $2.27 billion of adjusted free cash flow in its Q4 2025 investor presentation. In Q2 2026, the quarter ended June 30, 2026, revenue was $1.935 billion versus $1.004 billion in Q2 2025, and GAAP operating income was $912 million, according to its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. The approximately 93% growth rate is a calculation from those filed revenue amounts, not a percentage separately stated in the filing.
Palantir’s adjusted free-cash-flow figure is company-defined and should be kept separate from GAAP operating income. A useful review therefore looks at both the income statement and cash-flow reconciliation, including stock-based compensation and any dilution reflected in the share count.

Consumption rather than ratable subscription revenue
Snowflake’s product revenue is primarily generated when customers consume compute, storage, and data-transfer resources. Its financial release explicitly contrasts that model with subscription software recognized ratably over a contract term. A customer may purchase contracted capacity, use more than that amount, and under stated conditions roll unused capacity into a later period.
Because usage is discretionary, a strong current quarter does not automatically establish the same level of future consumption. Snowflake says customer usage can vary and that current-period use is not necessarily indicative of future use. This makes workload expansion, optimization, and macroeconomic activity important drivers of reported revenue.

The model can produce both operating leverage and volatility. New workloads, higher query volumes or additional data storage can increase consumption without a traditional seat-based contract renegotiation. However, customers can also tune workloads, reduce queries, delay projects or draw down previously purchased capacity more slowly. The same customer can therefore remain contracted while contributing less product revenue in a particular period.
Latest results and operating metrics
Snowflake’s Q2 FY2027 ended July 31, 2026, so it is not the same reporting period as Palantir’s June 30 quarter. Snowflake reported:

|---|---|
| Total revenue | $1.55 billion |
| Product revenue | $1.492 billion, up 37% year over year |
| GAAP operating result | $263 million operating loss |
| Non-GAAP operating result | $237 million operating income |
| Net revenue retention | 126% |
| Remaining performance obligations | $9.00 billion as of July 31, 2026 |
| Customers with more than $1 million of trailing-12-month product revenue | 828 |
The results are from Snowflake’s September 2, 2026 Q2 FY2027 release and its investor-relations overview. Snowflake’s net revenue retention is a company-defined cohort and product-revenue measure. Its 126% should not be treated as directly interchangeable with an expansion metric published by another issuer.
What 126% net revenue retention does and does not say
A 126% rate means the measured customer cohort generated 26% more product revenue than it did in the comparable prior period, after Snowflake’s stated methodology. It is not an average increase for every customer: some customers can expand sharply, some can remain flat and others can contract or leave. The metric also says nothing by itself about new-customer additions, gross retention, sales costs or GAAP profitability.
Remaining performance obligations
Snowflake reported $9.00 billion of remaining performance obligations (RPO) as of July 31, 2026. RPO is a contracted-performance measure, not a promise that the entire amount will become product revenue in the next quarter or even at a fixed pace. Snowflake says its RPO excludes some arrangements and is not necessarily indicative of future product-revenue growth because the timing and amount of consumption can differ. That caveat is particularly important for a usage-based model.
GAAP versus non-GAAP
The $263 million operating loss is the GAAP result. The $237 million operating-income figure is non-GAAP, meaning Snowflake adjusts it under its reconciliation and presentation conventions. The adjusted figure can help investors analyze operating trends, but it does not replace GAAP and must not be presented as if Snowflake were GAAP-profitable in that quarter.
When comparing margins, use the same basis for both companies. A GAAP operating margin for Palantir should not be compared with Snowflake’s non-GAAP margin without clearly labeling the difference. Stock-based compensation, acquisition-related items and other exclusions can materially change the apparent gap between the two measures.
Management outlook
On September 2, 2026, Snowflake forecast $6.070 billion of FY2027 product revenue, representing 36% year-over-year growth. The same outlook called for a 14.5% non-GAAP operating margin and a 23.0% non-GAAP adjusted free-cash-flow margin. These are management’s forward estimates, apply to product revenue rather than total revenue, and use non-GAAP margins. They are not achieved results and are not directly comparable with a Palantir total-revenue forecast.
Forecasts should be tested against actual consumption trends, renewal behavior and margin delivery in later quarters. A guidance number is an outlook, not evidence that the target has been reached.

Who is growing faster?
On the latest reported-quarter numbers, Palantir’s revenue growth is faster: approximately 93% calculated year over year versus Snowflake’s 37% product-revenue growth. The comparison has several qualifications.
- The quarters are not synchronized: June 30, 2026 for Palantir and July 31, 2026 for Snowflake.
- Palantir’s figure is total revenue, while Snowflake’s highlighted growth rate is product revenue. Snowflake’s total revenue was $1.55 billion.
- Palantir’s contract accounting and Snowflake’s consumption accounting can shift the timing of reported revenue differently.
- The percentages start from different businesses, customer mixes and fiscal calendars, so they should not be extrapolated as forecasts.
Snowflake’s 126% net revenue retention indicates that its measured customer cohort generated 26% more product revenue than in the comparable prior period, after the company’s defined adjustments. It does not mean every customer increased spending by 26%, nor does it forecast a fixed growth rate. Snowflake also cautions that its $9.00 billion remaining performance obligations exclude some arrangements and are not necessarily indicative of future product-revenue growth because the timing and amount of consumption can differ.
For a fuller growth assessment, investors can track several quarters of total revenue, product revenue, customer additions, expansion rates, large-customer counts and cash generation. One quarter is useful context, but it cannot by itself establish a durable trend.
What the business models mean for investors
Visibility and variability
Palantir’s multiyear contracts can provide a framework for revenue visibility, but termination-for-convenience rights, implementation delays, renewals and expansion still matter. Snowflake’s model can capture upside quickly when customers add workloads, yet a customer can optimize usage or defer activity, making near-term consumption less predictable.
Profitability quality
Palantir’s $912 million Q2 2026 GAAP operating income contrasts with Snowflake’s $263 million GAAP operating loss. Investors should examine stock-based compensation, dilution, cash generation and the reconciliation from GAAP to non-GAAP rather than treating Snowflake’s $237 million non-GAAP operating income as equivalent to Palantir’s GAAP result.
Customer expansion
Palantir’s economics depend on winning customers, retaining them, expanding deployments and realizing contract value across its platforms. Snowflake’s expansion depends on customers consuming more resources and adopting additional workloads. The same phrase—“land and expand”—can therefore describe materially different economic mechanisms.
What to monitor each quarter
- For Palantir: new contracts, renewal and expansion activity, implementation timing, customer concentration and the conversion of contract value into revenue and cash.
- For Snowflake: product-revenue growth, consumption trends, net revenue retention, RPO conversion, customers above $1 million of trailing-12-month product revenue and the gap between GAAP and non-GAAP results.
- For both: diluted share growth, stock-based compensation, operating cash flow and free-cash-flow conversion.
How to compare valuation correctly
No current valuation ranking is supported by the figures above. The cited filings and releases do not provide synchronized October 13, 2026 share prices, diluted share counts, market capitalizations, cash balances or debt balances. Without those inputs, a claim that either stock is cheaper, more expensive or trading at a particular multiple would be unsupported.
Step 1: Use one measurement date
Record each closing share price on the same date. Do not combine a current price for one company with an older price for the other. If markets are closed, state the last trading date used.

Step 2: Derive market capitalization
Use a consistent diluted share count for both issuers and calculate:
market capitalization = share price × diluted shares outstanding
State whether the share count is basic, diluted or a treasury-stock-method figure, and use the same convention for both companies. Options, restricted stock and other awards can make the diluted count materially higher than basic shares.
Step 3: Derive enterprise value when appropriate
For an enterprise-value multiple, adjust market capitalization for cash, cash equivalents, investments, debt and other clearly defined claims:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
enterprise value = equity value + debt − cash and cash equivalents
Explain any additional adjustments rather than silently mixing balance-sheet definitions. Use balance-sheet data from periods close to the selected price date.
Step 4: Match the denominator to the question
| Multiple | Required denominator | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-sales | Trailing-twelve-month or next-twelve-month revenue | Use the same revenue definition; do not mix Palantir total revenue with Snowflake product revenue without labeling it. |
| Enterprise-value-to-sales | Consistent trailing or forward revenue | Cash and debt adjustments must use the same date. |
| Price-to-earnings | GAAP earnings, if positive | Snowflake’s latest-period GAAP operating loss makes a simple current-period earnings comparison unsuitable. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Trailing or forward free cash flow | Identify whether the figure is GAAP-derived or company-adjusted; Palantir’s $2.27 billion FY2025 figure is adjusted free cash flow. |
Step 5: Interpret the premium
A valuation premium can reflect faster growth, stronger current profitability, better retention, more durable contracts or expectations for future margin expansion. It can also reflect higher execution risk, stock-based compensation, dilution or a revenue model whose cash generation is more cyclical. The right conclusion comes from a matched denominator and a stated time horizon, not from one headline sales multiple.
Step 6: Run sensitivity cases
Because both companies’ future results can vary, an investor can calculate valuation under several growth and margin assumptions rather than relying on one point estimate. For Snowflake, separate product-revenue growth from total revenue and test different consumption-conversion rates. For Palantir, test contract renewal, expansion and implementation timing. Presenting a range makes clear which assumptions drive the implied value.
Risks that can change the comparison
Palantir-specific risks
- Long and unpredictable sales cycles can delay bookings and deployments.
- Implementations may be complex and lengthy, postponing operational value and revenue realization.
- Termination-for-convenience clauses can reduce the certainty implied by a contract’s nominal term.
- Results depend on customer acquisition, retention, expansion and successful realization of contract value.
Snowflake-specific risks
- Customers control usage, so optimization or reduced activity can lower consumption.
- Current-period usage does not necessarily predict future consumption.
- RPO excludes some arrangements and does not guarantee the timing or amount of future product revenue.
- Non-GAAP profitability can obscure the gap between adjusted operating income and GAAP operating loss unless reconciliations are reviewed.
Risks common to both
Both businesses operate in competitive enterprise technology markets and depend on customers adopting data and AI workflows. Investors should monitor sales efficiency, renewal and expansion behavior, concentration, stock-based compensation, dilution, cash conversion and whether reported growth is translating into durable GAAP earnings or free cash flow.

Bottom line for an investor
Palantir currently presents the stronger combination of reported growth and GAAP operating profitability in the periods covered: approximately 93% calculated Q2 revenue growth and $912 million of GAAP operating income. Snowflake offers a different profile—37% product-revenue growth, 126% net revenue retention, $9.00 billion of RPO and a consumption model that can scale with customer workloads—but its latest quarter still showed a $263 million GAAP operating loss.
Those facts describe operating profiles, not a buy signal. To decide which stock offers better value, build a same-date market-capitalization and enterprise-value calculation, use a clearly labeled trailing or forward denominator and account for the differences between contracted ratable revenue and usage-based revenue. The available figures do not establish that either company is cheaper today.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Palantir make money compared with Snowflake?
Palantir mainly sells Gotham, Foundry, Apollo and AIP through one-to-five-year contracts, with revenue usually recognized ratably. Snowflake primarily charges for customers’ consumption of compute, storage and data transfer, so usage drives product revenue.

In the latest periods cited, Palantir’s Q2 2026 revenue grew approximately 93% from the filed year-earlier amounts, while Snowflake’s Q2 FY2027 product revenue grew 37%. The quarters end about a month apart and the measures are not identical.
Is Snowflake profitable?
Snowflake reported a $263 million GAAP operating loss in Q2 FY2027, alongside $237 million of non-GAAP operating income. The adjusted figure should not be described as GAAP profitability.
What does Snowflake’s 126% net revenue retention mean?
Under Snowflake’s company-defined methodology, the measured customer cohort generated 26% more product revenue than in the comparable prior period. It is not an average increase for every customer and is not directly interchangeable with another issuer’s metric.
Does Snowflake’s $9 billion RPO equal future revenue?
No. Snowflake says its RPO excludes some arrangements and is not necessarily indicative of future product-revenue growth because the timing and amount of consumption can differ.
Can these stocks be compared using price-to-sales?
Yes, but use the same-date market capitalization and the same trailing or forward revenue definition. Clearly label whether Snowflake product revenue or total revenue is used, and do not mix it silently with Palantir total revenue.
Why is a same-date share price important?
A valuation multiple combines a market value with a financial denominator. Using prices from different dates can make one company appear cheaper or more expensive because market expectations and share counts may have changed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Palantir’s latest reported period combines approximately 93% calculated revenue growth with $912 million of GAAP operating income. Snowflake’s profile is consumption-led, with 37% product-revenue growth, 126% net revenue retention and $9.00 billion of RPO, but a $263 million GAAP operating loss. A valuation winner cannot be identified without synchronized prices, diluted shares and consistently defined trailing or forward metrics.
