Oura did not merely win an early procedural round. In Investigation No. 337-TA-1398, the U.S. International Trade Commission ultimately found a Section 337 violation on August 21, 2025, and issued a limited exclusion order and cease-and-desist orders involving covered infringing smart-wearable products from respondents including Ultrahuman and RingConn.
That does not mean every Ultrahuman or RingConn product was banned worldwide. For shoppers, the practical issue is narrower but important: U.S. imports, inventory, availability, returns, replacements, and long-term support may be affected depending on the specific product and how the orders are enforced.

The short version

- Buyer caveat: The remedy is not automatically a worldwide ban on every ring sold by either brand.
The original “early battle” description was accurate for coverage published in May 2025, when the administrative law judge’s ruling was still subject to Commission review. It is incomplete as the description of the case today.

The Commission found that Oura established a violation involving claims 1, 2, and 12–14 of U.S. Patent No. 11,868,178. It issued a limited exclusion order and cease-and-desist orders and terminated the investigation.

A limited exclusion order is an import remedy. It can direct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to exclude covered products made by or for named respondents or related entities. A cease-and-desist order separately restricts specified conduct in the United States, which can include dealing with inventory and sales.
This was not a conventional district-court damages judgment. The ITC’s principal remedies are trade-related: restricting imports and, where appropriate, conduct involving products already in the United States. The Commission’s finding also does not establish that Oura owns all smart-ring technology or that every sleep, health, or biometric feature infringes an Oura patent.
How the case developed
1. Oura filed its complaint
Oura filed its complaint on March 13, 2024, and the Commission instituted Investigation No. 337-TA-1398 on April 12, 2024. The original respondents included Ultrahuman entities, RingConn, Shenzhen Ninenovo, and Circular, according to the USITC institution notice.

- U.S. Patent No. 11,868,178
- U.S. Patent No. 11,868,179
- U.S. Patent No. 10,842,429
The complaint identified different patent claims and respondents, so it is misleading to say the case covered every product or every patent equally. Circular later exited the investigation through a settlement-related termination.
2. The ALJ issued an initial determination
The administrative law judge found a violation based on infringement of asserted claims. That decision, reported by Wareable in May 2025, was important but not final. An ALJ’s initial determination is reviewed by the full Commission and can be affirmed, modified, or reversed.
Ultrahuman disagreed with the initial result and said it remained committed to U.S. operations. RingConn questioned the validity of Oura’s patents and pointed to a parallel Patent Trial and Appeal Board proceeding. That PTAB position was preliminary: a finding that a patent was more likely than not unpatentable is not the same as a final cancellation or invalidity judgment.

3. The Commission conducted partial review
On June 20, 2025, the Commission decided to review part of the ALJ’s final initial determination, particularly the economic-prong analysis of Oura’s domestic-industry showing. The Commission record indicates that it did not otherwise review the Final ID’s analysis in the same broad way.
This matters because an ITC complainant must satisfy more than an infringement theory. The case also involves domestic-industry requirements, including economic and technical elements. The final result was therefore not simply an automatic rubber stamp of the first ruling.
4. The Commission issued its final determination
On August 21, 2025, the Commission found a Section 337 violation and issued the exclusion and cease-and-desist remedies. The order set a zero-percent bond during the presidential-review period, and the investigation was terminated. The institution notice explains that remedial orders generally become final after a statutory review period unless disapproved on policy grounds by the U.S. Trade Representative.
A later USITC notice dated December 15, 2025 shows that the Commission denied an Ultrahuman motion to stay the remedial orders. That is a further procedural development, but it does not by itself establish that every model was removed from every U.S. retailer.
What the patents covered
The dispute concerned specific technical implementations of smart wearable devices, including elements of sensing and hardware architecture. It was not simply a legal ruling that one company owns the broad idea of placing sensors in a ring.

Readers should therefore avoid statements such as “Oura won all its patents” or “the ruling covers all sleep tracking.” Patent infringement depends on the wording of particular claims and the features practiced by particular products.

Validity and infringement are separate questions. Oura’s ITC victory means the Commission found infringement and a Section 337 violation under the record before it. It does not automatically resolve every parallel USPTO or federal-court dispute involving the patents.
Does this mean Ultrahuman and RingConn are banned in the U.S.?
Not in the broad sense implied by that headline. The legally accurate description is that the Commission issued orders covering infringing products within the scope of the remedial orders.
The practical impact can depend on:
- Which model and configuration is covered;
- Whether a shipment entered the United States before the order took effect;
- How Customs applies the order;
- Whether a company redesigns the product or obtains a license;
- Whether existing domestic inventory can still be sold;
- Whether a retailer changes its supply or fulfillment arrangements; and
- Whether later appeals, settlements, modifications, or other proceedings alter enforcement.
Availability in another country is not proof that the same product can freely enter the United States. Conversely, a product listed by a U.S. retailer is not proof that it is unaffected: it may be older inventory, a revised configuration, or a product subject to a different import arrangement.

What it means for shoppers
The decision is a legal and supply-chain risk factor, not a product-quality test. It does not prove that Oura is more accurate, more comfortable, or clinically better than Ultrahuman or RingConn.
If you are considering Oura
Oura is the legal winner in this ITC proceeding, but that does not make it the cheapest option for every household. Buyers should check the current price on the official Oura buying page and account for the recurring cost described on its membership page. Historical figures in the ITC record are not current price confirmation.
Oura may be a poor fit if you strongly dislike subscriptions, want the longest possible battery life, or prefer not to depend on one company’s health-data ecosystem.

If you are considering Ultrahuman or RingConn
Do not assume that a low price or current online listing eliminates the legal risk. Before paying, verify:

- That the specific model ships domestically to your address;
- Where returns must be sent and who pays return shipping;
- How warranty replacements are handled if imports become restricted;
- Whether the seller is the manufacturer or an unaffiliated marketplace seller;
- How long the company commits to app and firmware support; and
- Whether the product has been revised since the ITC dispute.
Use the brands’ official pages where possible: Ultrahuman Ring and RingConn. The historical prices cited in the ITC record—approximately $349 for an Ultrahuman ring and $279–$299 for RingConn devices—should not be treated as current prices.

Replacement and warranty logistics
A ring is a wearable that may need sizing exchanges, battery-related service, or replacement. If a company’s U.S. supply chain is disrupted, the key cost may not be the original purchase price but the time and shipping expense involved in obtaining a replacement.
Return deadlines
Check the return window before ordering, especially from a marketplace or overseas seller. A legal dispute can make a product harder to source without extending the retailer’s normal return deadline.
Subscription costs
Compare total ownership cost over two years, not just the device price. A subscription can materially change the cost comparison between Oura and subscription-free alternatives.

Uncertainty over U.S. availability can affect resale demand, but it does not guarantee either a loss or a gain. Avoid buying a ring as an investment. Buy only if the features, return terms, and support outlook make sense for your use.

What happens next?
The companies’ possible responses include an appeal to the Federal Circuit, a request for a stay or modification, a patent license or settlement, hardware redesign, changes to product configurations, and continued challenges in parallel USPTO proceedings.
A software update alone may not cure a hardware patent issue; that depends on the exact claim language and the product’s implementation. Similarly, moving manufacturing or changing an import route does not necessarily avoid an order if the order covers products made by or for related entities.
The unresolved practical questions are product-specific: which configurations Customs will treat as covered, whether redesigned products fall outside the order, how retailers handle existing stock, and whether any later appeal or settlement changes the remedy.
Alternatives for buyers
If the legal uncertainty is more risk than you want, consider a device that fits your existing ecosystem. The Samsung Galaxy Ring is most compelling for people already using Samsung Galaxy phones and services, but it is a weaker fit for iPhone users. A smartwatch from Garmin, Apple, or Fitbit may be better if you need GPS, workout features, notifications, or a display. If sleep and recovery are your only priorities, using a watch you already own may be cheaper than adding a new ring.
Samsung’s separate wearable-related ITC matter should not be confused with Oura’s Investigation No. 337-TA-1398.
