OnePay CashRewards is not a renamed version of Walmart’s former Capital One card. It is a newer Synchrony Bank product with its own rewards, pricing, and approval process. The current CashRewards Card pays 3% at Walmart for shoppers without Walmart+ and 5% for eligible Walmart+ members, plus 1.5% on other purchases after any introductory offer. The older Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard used a different structure: 5% at Walmart.com, 2% in stores after its introductory Walmart Pay period, 2% on restaurants and travel, and 1% elsewhere.

That distinction matters because applying for OnePay does not guarantee the CashRewards product. OnePay says an applicant may instead receive the Walmart-only OnePay Spend Card, which does not have standard rewards. Compare the product named in your approval and application disclosure—not the card you expected to receive.

What “Walmart credit card” means now

Walmart-related card discussions often combine two separate generations of products. The name can refer to the current OnePay program or to an older Capital One account, and those products should not be evaluated as if they were the same account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current OnePay program

OnePay says its cards are new products issued by Synchrony Bank and are not associated with Walmart’s previous cards. The program currently has two products:

  • OnePay CashRewards Card: a general-use card with Walmart and non-Walmart earning rates.
  • OnePay Spend Card: a Walmart-only product that does not have standard rewards.

Applicants cannot select which of those products they receive. The application decision determines the product offered, so read the approval screen and account agreement before assuming that a Walmart purchase will earn cash back. A decision that results in Spend Card approval is not equivalent to CashRewards approval, even though both products use the OnePay name.

The former Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard

Walmart’s 2019 launch announcement described a separate Mastercard issued through its former Capital One relationship. Those advertised terms are useful for understanding the old product, but they do not describe OnePay. The historical card should not be treated as a current application option or as an interchangeable name for CashRewards.

OnePay CashRewards rewards and how they work

Everyday earning rates

OnePay’s current product description advertises these CashRewards rates:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Purchase type CashRewards rate Important condition
Walmart purchases 3% Rate for cardholders who do not qualify for the Walmart+ rate
Walmart purchases with eligible Walmart+ membership 5% The card must be linked to Walmart+ and the membership must be active when the purchase settles
Other purchases 1.5% Stated everyday rate after any applicable introductory period

The 5% Walmart rate is therefore not automatic for every CashRewards cardholder. Walmart’s terms require the card to be linked to the membership and the shopper to have Walmart+ at the time the transaction settles. A purchase can also fall outside the rate when Walmart is not the merchant of record, including some affiliate and third-party transactions.

For perspective, the difference between 3% and 5% is two percentage points. On $100 of qualifying Walmart spending, that is $3 versus $5 in rewards; on $500, it is $15 versus $25. Those calculations assume the transaction qualifies and do not account for interest, returns, credits, or excluded merchants.

The temporary 3% non-Walmart promotion

OnePay advertises 3% on non-Walmart purchases for the first 90 days for eligible customers who apply and are approved from September 2 through December 31, 2026. That is a time-limited offer tied to the application and approval window; it is not the permanent non-Walmart rate. After the applicable introductory period, the stated everyday rate is 1.5%.

Because the promotion is conditional, keep the offer terms shown with your application. The exact start of the 90-day period, eligible transactions, and any exclusions are controlled by the current offer disclosure rather than by the headline rate. Someone approved outside the stated window, or someone whose offer does not include the promotion, should not budget for the temporary 3% rate.

Points, not an instant price reduction

OnePay says CashRewards awards points. Points can be redeemed as a statement credit, deposited into a OnePay deposit account, or through other options that may be available in the rewards program. Rewards are therefore accumulated in the account rather than necessarily reducing the purchase price at checkout.

Redemption timing, minimums, expiration rules, returns treatment, and exclusions can change, so check the current OnePay Rewards Terms in your account before treating points as cash available for a particular purpose. If a purchase is returned or adjusted, the associated points may also be adjusted under the applicable terms. Do not count unredeemed points as guaranteed cash until you have confirmed that they are available and eligible for your chosen redemption.

How the Walmart+ 5% rate is triggered

The Walmart+ benefit has two operational requirements that are easy to miss:

Rank #2
Sale
The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness
  • Ideal for Gifting
  • Ideal for a bookworm
  • Compact for travelling
  1. Link the card to the Walmart+ membership. Merely holding both products is not enough if the accounts are not linked as required by the program.
  2. Keep Walmart+ active when the purchase settles. The relevant timing is settlement, not necessarily the moment you tap or submit the order.

Walmart’s terms also exclude some transactions involving affiliates and third parties, particularly when Walmart is not the merchant of record. Marketplace orders, partner services, or other transactions that look like Walmart purchases may therefore earn a different rate. Review the merchant information on the receipt or transaction record when a purchase does not earn what you expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This timing rule matters for online orders, pickup, and delivery. An order submitted while a membership is active may settle after a cancellation, expiration, or account change. Conversely, a transaction that settles while the membership and linkage are valid is the one to evaluate under the program terms. Keep confirmation records if the reward rate is important to your budget.

Fees, APR, and the real cost of carrying a balance

Annual and foreign-transaction fees

OnePay says neither the CashRewards Card nor the Walmart Spend Card has an annual fee. It also says the cards do not charge a foreign transaction fee. A late fee may apply when the minimum payment is not received by the deadline. Your card agreement controls the amount and any applicable exceptions.

A $0 annual fee is useful only if the account is otherwise affordable. Late fees, interest, and the loss of a grace period can cost more than months of rewards. Set a payment reminder or automatic payment for at least the minimum, then pay the full statement balance when possible.

Purchase APR

The purchase APR is variable. OnePay describes it as a fixed amount plus the Prime Rate, with the fixed amount determined during the application process. That means two applicants can receive different pricing, and the rate can change when the underlying Prime Rate changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Synchrony application disclosure showed a 20.24% variable purchase APR as of January 1, 2026 and stated that the APR would not exceed 35.99%. Those figures are a dated disclosure, not a guaranteed rate for every applicant. Use the APR and range shown in your own application disclosure as the controlling offer. The disclosure you receive is more relevant than a rate shown in a general advertisement.

Grace period and interest

OnePay says its interest grace policy avoids purchase interest when you pay the full statement balance by the due date. If you carry a balance, interest can quickly exceed the value of the rewards. For example, at a 20.24% annual rate, a balance carried for a month costs roughly 1.69% before compounding and account-specific calculations; a high balance or higher personalized APR can erase several months of 1.5% or 3% rewards. Paying in full is therefore more important than choosing between two headline earning rates.

Consider a simple comparison: $1,000 in purchases earning 1.5% produces $15 in rewards, while a month of interest at approximately 1.69% on a similar balance is about $16.90 before issuer-specific calculations. The illustration is not a billing quote, but it shows why rewards should not justify borrowing. Your actual daily balance, APR, payment timing, and grace-period status determine the charge.

What the former Capital One Walmart card advertised

Walmart’s 2019 announcement for the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard listed the following program terms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Purchase type Advertised historical reward
Walmart.com 5%
Walmart stores 2% after the limited introductory Walmart Pay offer
Restaurants and travel 2%
Other purchases 1%

The announcement also advertised no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. It does not establish the current APR, fees, or reward treatment for every remaining legacy account. If you still hold that account, your current statement and card agreement—not the 2019 announcement—determine what you pay and earn.

The old structure could be attractive to someone who bought frequently at Walmart.com or spent heavily on restaurants and travel, but those categories do not transfer to OnePay automatically. OnePay’s current standard outside-Walmart rate is 1.5%, while its Walmart rate depends on membership and transaction eligibility. Comparing the category labels without checking the product generation can lead to the wrong choice.

Side-by-side comparison

Which OnePay product might you receive?

CashRewards Card

CashRewards is the product to evaluate if you want a general-purpose card that earns at Walmart and elsewhere. Its value is highest when you qualify for and maintain the Walmart+ linkage needed for 5% Walmart earnings, or when you can use a limited introductory offer without carrying a balance.

Before accepting, verify the account name, reward schedule, APR, credit limit, due date, and any introductory language in the approval materials. A product page can describe the program broadly; your agreement and personalized disclosure govern your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Walmart Spend Card

The Spend Card is Walmart-only and has no standard rewards. Because OnePay says applicants cannot choose the product, do not apply solely on the assumption that approval means CashRewards approval. If the offer names Spend Card, compare its disclosed terms with your needs before accepting. If you need rewards outside Walmart or a general-purpose card, the Spend Card may not meet that objective.

How to decide whether CashRewards fits your spending

If most of your spending is at Walmart

Start by determining whether you already have eligible Walmart+ membership and can keep the card linked through settlement. The difference between 3% and 5% is two percentage points. On $500 of qualifying Walmart purchases, that difference is $10 in rewards for the period measured. Purchases that fail the merchant-of-record or settlement requirements should not be counted in that estimate.

If your Walmart spending is split between store, website, marketplace, delivery, and partner transactions, categorize each type instead of applying one rate to the entire budget. The merchant-of-record rule can make two orders placed through a Walmart interface earn differently.

If you spend heavily outside Walmart

The ordinary non-Walmart rate is 1.5%, which is lower than the 2% restaurant-and-travel rate advertised for the former Capital One card. An eligible applicant in the September 2–December 31, 2026 window may receive 3% for the first 90 days, but that temporary rate should not be used as a long-term budget assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimate your post-promotion rewards using 1.5%. For example, $2,000 of qualifying non-Walmart purchases would produce $30 at 1.5%; the same amount at a temporary 3% rate would produce $60, a $30 difference that ends when the introductory period ends.

If you sometimes carry balances

Prioritize the APR in your personalized disclosure and your ability to pay in full. A no-annual-fee card can still be expensive when interest or late fees apply. If a balance is likely to remain after the due date, estimate interest before valuing the rewards. A lower-rate alternative, debt payoff plan, or no new purchases may be financially better than chasing a higher reward rate.

If you need a card for international purchases

OnePay says CashRewards has no foreign transaction fee. Confirm the current agreement and acceptance conditions before relying on any card for a particular trip; no foreign transaction fee does not guarantee universal acceptance or eliminate currency-conversion considerations.

How to maximize rewards without creating avoidable costs

  1. Confirm the product name after approval. Verify that the account is CashRewards rather than the Walmart-only Spend Card.
  2. Read the personalized pricing disclosure. Record the purchase APR, variable-rate language, late-fee terms, and payment due date.
  3. Link Walmart+ before shopping. If you expect 5% earnings, complete the required linkage and keep the membership active through settlement.
  4. Check the merchant of record. Review marketplace, affiliate, and partner transactions because some are excluded from the Walmart+ rate.
  5. Track the 90-day promotion separately. Note the approval date and the end of the promotional period so your budget switches to the 1.5% everyday rate at the right time.
  6. Pay the full statement balance by the due date. This is the step that preserves the value of the rewards under OnePay’s stated grace policy.
  7. Review points activity and redemption terms. Use the current OnePay Rewards Terms to verify available redemption methods and any restrictions before redeeming.
  8. Save confirmations. Keep the approval disclosure, Walmart+ linkage confirmation, and promotion terms so you can reconcile a missing reward or an unexpected rate.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling OnePay a replacement card

OnePay is a separate Synchrony product, not a simple rebrand of the former Capital One account. Use the current OnePay agreement for CashRewards terms and the legacy agreement for an existing former-card account.

Assuming every Walmart purchase earns 5%

The higher rate requires the Walmart+ linkage and settlement conditions, and some third-party or affiliate transactions are excluded. Check transaction details rather than relying on the store name alone.

Treating the introductory 3% as permanent

The non-Walmart 3% rate applies only to eligible approvals during September 2–December 31, 2026 and only for the first 90 days. The stated everyday rate afterward is 1.5%.

Choosing by annual fee alone

$0 annual fee does not remove APR or late-fee risk. Compare the personalized APR and payment terms, especially if you cannot reliably pay the statement balance.

Assuming approval guarantees CashRewards

OnePay says applicants may be offered the Spend Card instead. Read the exact product name and rewards section in the approval materials before accepting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting points before they are redeemable

Points are not necessarily an instant discount. Check the account’s redemption options, timing, and restrictions before assigning a dollar value to an upcoming bill or deposit.

What existing former-card holders should do

If you still have the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard, do not infer your current terms from either the OnePay website or Walmart’s 2019 announcement. Check your latest statement and card agreement for APR, fees, rewards, account closure notices, and redemption rules. The historical announcement establishes what Walmart advertised at launch, but it does not provide a complete current agreement for every legacy account.

If you are considering moving to OnePay, compare the two accounts without assuming that closing one or opening another is consequence-free. Confirm how you will redeem any remaining rewards, whether a balance remains, and which account’s payment obligations continue. The practical choice depends on the terms of the account you actually hold and the OnePay product you are actually offered.

Questions to answer before applying

  • Does the approval identify CashRewards or Spend Card?
  • What Walmart rate appears in the account terms, and what steps are required for Walmart+ eligibility?
  • Is the 90-day non-Walmart promotion shown on your offer, and when does its clock begin?
  • What purchase APR, maximum APR, late-fee language, and due date appear in your disclosure?
  • How can you redeem points, and are there minimums or timing restrictions?
  • Will your purchases be made by Walmart or by a marketplace, affiliate, or other third party?

Bottom line: which comparison matters most?

For a new applicant, the practical comparison is between the CashRewards offer you are actually approved for and the spending pattern you can sustain without interest. CashRewards offers 3% at Walmart without the Walmart+ benefit, 5% for eligible linked Walmart+ members, and 1.5% elsewhere after introductory periods. Its main uncertainties are product assignment, transaction eligibility, promotional limits, points redemption rules, and personalized APR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The former Capital One card remains relevant only as a historical reference or for people who still hold an older account. Its advertised Walmart.com, in-store, restaurant, travel, and other-purchase rates came from a different program and should not be substituted for current OnePay terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is OnePay the same as the old Walmart credit card?

No. OnePay says its cards are new Synchrony Bank products and are not associated with the former Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard. The older card’s 2019 advertised terms are historical and do not describe a current OnePay account.

Does the OnePay CashRewards Card give 5% cash back at Walmart?

Eligible Walmart+ members can receive 5% when the card is linked to the membership and the membership is active when the purchase settles. Other CashRewards cardholders receive the stated 3% Walmart rate, subject to transaction exclusions.

What is the difference between CashRewards and the Walmart Spend Card?

CashRewards is a general-use card with Walmart and non-Walmart earning rates. The Spend Card is Walmart-only and has no standard rewards. Applicants cannot choose which product OnePay offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the OnePay CashRewards APR?

The purchase APR is variable and is set for each applicant as a fixed amount plus the Prime Rate. A Synchrony disclosure showed 20.24% variable as of January 1, 2026, with a stated maximum of 35.99%; your own application disclosure controls.

Does OnePay charge an annual fee or foreign transaction fee?

OnePay says neither CashRewards nor the Spend Card has an annual fee and says there is no foreign transaction fee. A late fee may apply if the minimum payment is late, and your agreement controls the amount.

How long does the 3% non-Walmart promotion last?

For eligible customers who apply and are approved from September 2 through December 31, 2026, OnePay advertises 3% on non-Walmart purchases for the first 90 days. The stated everyday rate afterward is 1.5%, and the offer disclosure controls the details.

Are OnePay rewards paid as cash immediately?

OnePay says CashRewards earns points. Points may be redeemed as a statement credit, deposited into a OnePay deposit account, or through other available options. Check the current Rewards Terms for timing, minimums, and restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I keep the former Capital One Walmart card?

There is no universal answer. Existing holders should use their current statement and account agreement for APR, fees, rewards, and closure information. Walmart’s 2019 announcement is not a complete agreement for every legacy account, so compare the terms you actually have with the OnePay offer you actually receive.

The Bottom Line

Choose based on the approved product, qualifying purchase rules, and APR—not the Walmart name alone. CashRewards can earn 3% or eligible 5% at Walmart and 1.5% elsewhere, while the former Capital One card used a different historical schedule. Confirm the product, link Walmart+ correctly, track the limited promotion, and pay in full when possible so interest does not erase the rewards.
