Choose Microsoft 365 if you use more than one device, share Office with other people, want OneDrive storage, collaborate online, or want ongoing feature and AI updates. Choose Office 2024 if you need classic desktop apps on one computer, work mostly offline, and prefer paying once instead of subscribing.
The important distinction is that “Office 2024” is a group of one-time-purchase editions, while “Microsoft 365” is a group of subscription plans. The right choice depends mainly on your users, devices, cloud-storage needs, and tolerance for recurring payments.

What you actually get
Office Home 2024
Office Home 2024 is a perpetual-license suite for one PC or Mac. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. It does not include the Microsoft 365 subscription services or the same bundled OneDrive allowance.

Office Home & Business 2024
Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook and permits home or commercial use. It is still a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac, not a business collaboration or administration platform.
Microsoft 365 Personal and Family
Microsoft 365 Personal is for one person across supported PCs, Macs, tablets, phones, and the web. Family can be shared with up to five additional people, with separate accounts and generally up to 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person.
Microsoft’s current consumer lineup also includes Microsoft 365 Premium, a higher-priced tier with expanded Copilot-related benefits. It is not the default recommendation for someone who only needs Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. AI entitlements and usage limits are plan-specific and can change.
Access is PC-only and plan-specific. Do not assume every Microsoft 365 plan includes every app in Microsoft’s broader comparison tables. Publisher is also being retired in 2026, so it is a poor reason to choose a new Office purchase; existing Publisher users should plan a migration.
The biggest decision: people multiplied by devices
Count both the people and the computers that need Office. This often matters more than the sticker price.
- One person, one computer: Office Home 2024 can be cheaper over several years if you need only the core apps.
- One person with a desktop and laptop: Microsoft 365 is usually more practical because Office 2024 is licensed for one PC or Mac.
- Two or more household users: Microsoft 365 Family can be better value than buying separate perpetual licenses, even though its annual cost continues.
- Phones and tablets: Microsoft 365 provides the broader supported-device experience. A perpetual Office license should not be treated as a household-wide mobile entitlement.
“Install on multiple devices” does not mean unlimited people can use a Personal subscription. Personal is for one person; Family is the household-sharing option.
Cost over time
Using the prices shown in the supplied US Store material, Office Home 2024 costs about $179.99 once, while Microsoft 365 Personal costs $99.99 per year. The simple break-even point is roughly 1.8 years. After that, the subscription costs more in direct payments—but it also includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage, ongoing upgrades, and multi-device access.
Office Home & Business 2024 at $249.99 takes roughly 2.5 years to match Microsoft 365 Personal’s annual price. That comparison is incomplete if you need Outlook or commercial-use rights, because the cheaper Office Home edition is not an equivalent product.

- Media-Friendly: The K400 Plus wireless touch TV keyboard gives you integrated, comfortable control of your PC-to-TV entertainment, eliminating the clutter of a separate keyboard and mouse
- Plug-and-Play: Simply plug the Unifying receiver into a USB port and the wireless touchpad keyboard is ready to go; adjust controls using the Logitech Options Software to save preferred settings
- Power-Packed: Built with laid-back control in mind, this wireless TV keyboard has a reliable and long battery life of up to 18 months (2), including an on/off button to help it go even longer
- Wireless Freedom: Designed for seamless comfort and control, this HTPC keyboard boasts a range of up to 33 ft (1) wireless connectivity, with quiet keys and a large touchpad for easy navigation
- Broad Compatibility: Designed for use with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and later, Android 7 or later, and Chrome OS
For a household, Microsoft 365 Family at $129.99 per year can be compelling as soon as two people need Office. Compare it with the cost of two separate Office licenses, two computers, and any storage you would buy separately.
Three useful scenarios
- One user, one PC, three-year horizon: Office Home 2024 costs less in direct payments than three years of Personal, provided you do not need bundled storage, new features, or a second device.
- One user, two computers: Microsoft 365 generally has the better licensing fit. A second Office 2024 computer may require another purchase.
- Two to six household users: Family often delivers more practical value because each person gets a separate account and storage allowance.
These calculations do not assign a dollar value to cloud storage, collaboration, AI, support, or the cost of a future Office release. Office 2024 does not include the next major version; Microsoft 365 includes the current version while you remain subscribed.
Cloud storage and collaboration
Microsoft 365 Personal includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage. Family generally provides up to 1 TB per person, or up to 6 TB total. Office 2024 does not include that same storage bundle, although you can use OneDrive separately with it.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Microsoft 365 is the stronger choice for real-time co-authoring, sharing through OneDrive, and working across desktop, web, and mobile apps. Business plans can also add services such as Teams, SharePoint, hosted email, administration, and device controls.
Office 2024 can open and edit files stored in a cloud service, but that does not mean the purchase includes Microsoft’s cloud collaboration stack. Keep the distinctions clear:
- Editing a file stored online is not the same as receiving cloud storage with your license.
- OneDrive storage is not the same as SharePoint or Exchange Online.
- Business collaboration and administration require an appropriate business plan, not simply Office Home & Business 2024.
OneDrive is synchronization and storage, not a complete backup strategy. Keep an independent backup of irreplaceable files.
Updates, AI, and stability
Office 2024 receives security updates, but its feature set is largely fixed. It does not automatically gain the next major Office release or every feature added to Microsoft 365. Microsoft identifies some cloud-backed capabilities, such as PowerPoint Designer and Excel Data Types, as unavailable or different in one-time-purchase suites.
Microsoft 365 receives ongoing feature updates, bug fixes, and the latest application versions while the subscription is active. That makes it the better fit for users who want current Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and collaboration features.

- All-day Comfort: This USB keyboard creates a comfortable and familiar typing experience thanks to the deep-profile keys and standard full-size layout with all F-keys, number pad and arrow keys
- Built to Last: The spill-proof (2) design and durable print characters keep you on track for years to come despite any on-the-job mishaps; it’s a reliable partner for your desk at home, or at work
- Long-lasting Battery Life: A 24-month battery life (4) means you can go for 2 years without the hassle of changing batteries of your wireless full-size keyboard
- Simply plug the USB receiver into a USB port on your desktop, laptop or netbook computer and start using the keyboard right away without any software installation
- Simply Wireless: Forget about drop-outs and delays thanks to a strong, reliable wireless connection with up to 33 ft range (5); K270 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later
AI is not a simple yes-or-no distinction. Microsoft 365 plans may include Copilot-related features, but availability depends on the plan, account, country, language, operating system, and usage limits. Microsoft says AI benefits are not necessarily shared identically with every Family or Premium member; verify the current plan footnotes before buying.
Office 2024 offers more feature stability. Microsoft 365 offers more currency but can change its interface, features, AI behavior, and requirements. Organizations with tightly controlled or regulated workflows may need to investigate Office LTSC 2024 or enterprise licensing rather than assume a retail Office edition is appropriate.
Offline use and internet requirements
Neither product should be described as simply “online-only” or “offline-only.” Office 2024 apps can be used offline after installation and activation. Microsoft 365 desktop apps can also work offline, but the subscription must be periodically validated.

A file stored only online will not be available without connectivity unless OneDrive has synchronized a local copy.
If the computer is routinely isolated from the internet or the environment requires a tightly controlled release, Office 2024 may be more natural for a household. Commercial environments with strict offline requirements should examine Office LTSC 2024, which is a distinct volume-licensing product, not merely the “business version” of retail Office 2024.
Support dates and operating-system compatibility
Microsoft lists Office 2024’s lifecycle as beginning October 1, 2024, with retirement on October 9, 2029. That is the end of support—not a promise that the license suddenly stops launching on that date. Office LTSC 2024 has the same listed end date under a different commercial lifecycle policy.
Microsoft 365 Apps do not have a fixed retirement date in the same sense, but continued support depends on staying current and meeting Microsoft’s system requirements.

Office 2024’s stated Windows requirement includes Windows 10 or later, but Windows 10 reached operating-system end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 will continue receiving security updates on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028; that does not make an unsupported Windows 10 installation a preferred long-term setup. If you have an old Windows 10 PC, evaluate whether it can run a supported Windows 11 environment before buying Office.

On Mac, Microsoft supports Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 across the three most recent major macOS versions, and current Office 2024 installations may require macOS Sonoma or later. Apple’s supported-version cycle changes, so check Microsoft’s Mac compatibility guidance immediately before purchase.

- You need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Microsoft 365 Personal
Choose Personal for one user who works across multiple devices, wants 1 TB of OneDrive storage, needs current features, or prefers continuous access to the latest apps instead of periodic major-version purchases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft 365 Family
Choose Family when two to six people need Office and separate storage. It is often the strongest consumer value for a household, but do not assume every member receives the owner’s AI benefits.
Microsoft 365 Premium
Consider Premium only if its expanded current Microsoft 365 and Copilot-related benefits justify the higher price. It is unnecessary for readers who need only basic desktop Office apps.
Microsoft 365 Business
Use Microsoft’s business comparison rather than a consumer plan if you need employee accounts, custom-domain email, onboarding and offboarding, business Teams or SharePoint, managed devices, security, compliance, or centralized administration.
- Business Basic: web and mobile apps plus business services and storage, without the full desktop application bundle.
- Business Standard: adds desktop Office applications.
- Business Premium: adds stronger security and management capabilities.
- Apps for business: focuses on desktop Office apps and storage rather than the full business-services bundle.
See Microsoft’s business-plan comparison for current details.
Common edge cases
“I only need Excel.”
Compare a standalone Excel purchase with Microsoft 365. A full subscription may be unnecessary if you need one application on one computer and do not value storage or ongoing upgrades. Check Microsoft’s current standalone pricing before deciding.
Best Value
- Connect in seconds: Fast, easy Bluetooth wireless technology simply connects without the need for a dongle or USB port
- Durable and reliable: Built for quality, K250 offers long-lasting keys, a spill-resistant design (2)
- Comfort is key: Deep-profile keys and an adjustable tilt-leg design make typing feel great
- Space-saving: with a compact layout that still includes number pad, arrow keys, and handy F-key shortcuts
- Made responsibly: Designed to last, K250 plastic parts are durably made with minimum 64% recycled plastic (3) to withstand everyday use
“I need Outlook.”
Office Home 2024 does not include Outlook. Office Home & Business 2024 and applicable Microsoft 365 plans do.
“I need Access.”
Access is PC-only and plan-specific. Do not treat it as a Mac feature or assume it is included in every Microsoft 365 plan.
“I need to work completely offline.”
Office 2024 is the more straightforward fit, but activation is still required. Make sure the files themselves are stored locally; a cloud license does not make cloud-only files available without internet access.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“I want business email.”
Office Home & Business 2024 supplies applications and commercial-use rights. It does not provide hosted Exchange email or business administration. Choose an appropriate Microsoft 365 Business plan if those services are required.
“I found a cheap lifetime Office key.”
Buy from Microsoft or a reputable authorized retailer. Unusually cheap “lifetime” keys may be unauthorized, resale, volume, stolen, or non-transferable licenses and can stop working or create compliance problems.
Privacy and ownership: the practical distinction
Office 2024 can support a more local-first workflow, while Microsoft 365 connects more closely to cloud storage and account-based services. That does not make either option universally more private. Review OneDrive synchronization, account-sharing practices, and— for businesses—the specific identity, retention, security, and compliance terms of the plan.
Office 2024 is a license to use a particular release, not ownership of every future Office feature. Microsoft 365 is continuing access to subscription benefits, not a permanent software purchase. The choice is therefore less about “owning versus renting” in the abstract and more about whether you value a fixed release or an evolving service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinal checklist
- How many people need Office?
- How many PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones will they use?
- Do you need Outlook, Access, or commercial-use rights?
- Do you want 1 TB of cloud storage per person?
- Do you collaborate or co-author documents regularly?
- Do you want ongoing feature updates or AI tools?
- How long will you keep the same Office version?
- Can you accept recurring billing?
- Will your Windows or macOS version remain supported?
- Do you need business email, administration, security, or compliance controls?
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Office Home 2024 is the economical, fixed-release choice for one person on one computer. Office Home & Business 2024 is the one-time-purchase option when Outlook or commercial use matters. Microsoft 365 Personal is better for one user with multiple devices, while Microsoft 365 Family is usually the strongest fit for a household. Choose a Microsoft 365 Business plan when the need is business identity, email, collaboration, administration, or security—not merely desktop Office apps.
