Short answer: Nvidia captures the most direct upside from artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending because it sells an integrated accelerated-computing platform. Broadcom is a more diversified infrastructure business, pairing custom AI silicon and networking with a large infrastructure-software operation. TSMC is the manufacturing layer: its pure-play foundry produces advanced chips and packaging for Nvidia, Broadcom and many other designers.
Those positions create different return drivers and risks. Nvidia has the fastest growth and highest current operating leverage, but depends heavily on AI data-center budgets, a concentrated customer base and successful product transitions. Broadcom has a steadier mix of semiconductor and recurring software revenue, while remaining exposed to large-customer concentration, semiconductor cycles and acquisition integration. TSMC benefits from demand across the chip industry and process-technology leadership, but its factories require enormous investment and are exposed to Taiwan-related geopolitical and infrastructure risks.

The three companies occupy different places in the semiconductor chain
It is misleading to treat Nvidia, Broadcom and TSMC as interchangeable chip stocks. Nvidia and Broadcom primarily design or specify products. TSMC manufactures customers’ designs in its own fabs and provides advanced packaging. In a typical AI server, Nvidia may supply the accelerator, networking and system architecture; Broadcom may supply a custom accelerator, switch, optical or connectivity component; and TSMC may manufacture the advanced silicon and package it.

| TSMC | Pure-play semiconductor foundry | Manufactures customers’ wafers and provides process technology and advanced packaging | Industry-wide wafer demand, node leadership, factory utilization and geopolitical continuity |
The practical distinction is simple: Nvidia is the platform and demand-capture story, Broadcom is the diversified infrastructure compounder, and TSMC is the scarce manufacturing and process-technology layer. Their results are linked, but their businesses do not rise and fall for exactly the same reasons.

How Nvidia makes money
An integrated accelerated-computing platform
Nvidia reports two segments, Compute & Networking and Graphics. In fiscal 2026, revenue reached $215.9 billion, up 65% from the prior year. Compute & Networking contributed $193.5 billion and Graphics contributed $22.5 billion, according to Nvidia’s fiscal 2026 reporting.
The company increasingly sells a complete data-center platform rather than a standalone processor. The package can include GPUs and CPUs, high-speed networking, server systems, software libraries, developer tools and support for deployment. That integration lets customers buy a tested architecture for training and inference instead of assembling every layer independently.
Where the revenue is concentrated
Data Center revenue was $193.7 billion in fiscal 2026, roughly 90% of Nvidia’s total. Data-center compute revenue grew 59%, while networking revenue grew 142%. The figures show both the scale of accelerator demand and the increasing importance of the links between processors, servers and clusters.
Recommended Free Tools
Nvidia’s software and developer ecosystem reinforce the hardware sale. CUDA and related tools give developers a familiar way to write and optimize workloads for Nvidia accelerators. Networking technologies such as NVLink, Ethernet and InfiniBand help customers build larger, more tightly coupled clusters. The economic aim is to make the full platform more valuable than any one chip.
What can drive the next phase
- Blackwell and successor platforms: New architectures can raise performance per watt and encourage existing customers to refresh entire clusters.
- Hyperscaler, enterprise and sovereign build-outs: Cloud providers, companies and governments are investing in domestic or dedicated AI capacity.
- Inference and agentic AI: Once models move from training into everyday use, the number of production queries can create a second wave of accelerator demand.
- Networking and complete systems: Faster interconnects and pre-integrated systems can increase the value captured per data-center deployment.
- Automotive, robotics and physical AI: These markets extend the platform beyond conventional cloud servers, although they are smaller than today’s data-center business.
Nvidia’s fiscal 2026 filing attributes Data Center growth to major platform shifts toward accelerated computing and AI. The opportunity is therefore broader than selling a faster graphics processor: it is supplying the computing architecture on which customers run AI.

How Broadcom makes money
Two operating engines
Broadcom has two reportable segments: semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software. Fiscal 2025 net revenue was $63.887 billion. Semiconductor solutions generated $36.858 billion, or 58% of the total, while infrastructure software generated $27.029 billion, or 42%.
The semiconductor portfolio spans custom AI accelerators, Ethernet switching, routing, network-interface controllers, optical components, connectivity, storage and industrial applications. Rather than relying on one general-purpose processor, Broadcom supplies specialized parts that sit throughout data-center and communications systems.

VMware Cloud Foundation is central to the current portfolio, giving Broadcom a software business tied to customers’ core infrastructure rather than to a single chip-generation cycle.
Growth from custom silicon and software transitions
Broadcom’s fiscal 2025 revenue grew 24% year over year. Semiconductor solutions grew 22%, primarily because hyperscalers increased spending on custom AI accelerators and AI networking. Infrastructure software grew 26%, reflecting demand for VMware Cloud Foundation and the transition from older licensing arrangements toward subscription licensing.
Custom accelerators can give large cloud customers a chip tailored to their own workloads, power limits and software stack. Broadcom supplies the design and connectivity expertise while the customer controls more of the system architecture. Ethernet switching and optical interconnects benefit from the same trend: as AI clusters become larger, moving data between processors becomes a major design constraint.

Software adds a different type of visibility. Subscription and renewal revenue can continue after the initial sale, and Broadcom can cross-sell products across an installed enterprise base. The trade-off is that customers scrutinize licensing changes closely, and renewal rates depend on the perceived value of the bundled products.
How TSMC makes money
The pure-play foundry model
TSMC pioneered the pure-play foundry model. It manufactures customers’ designs and does not design, manufacture or market semiconductor products under its own name. That separation avoids competing directly with customers and allows fabless companies to use TSMC as their manufacturing and process-technology partner.
In 2025, TSMC manufactured 12,682 products using 305 process technologies for 534 customers. Its scale lets the company spread the cost of research, equipment and factories across a broad customer base, while customers avoid building a leading-edge fab of their own.
2025 operating scale and technology mix
TSMC reported US$122.42 billion of revenue and US$55.21 billion of net income for 2025. Revenue increased 35.9% in US-dollar terms and net income increased 51.2%. Advanced technologies defined as 7-nanometer and beyond represented 74% of wafer revenue, with 3-nanometer accounting for 24%.
Those percentages are wafer-revenue measures, not a claim that every product uses the newest node. They do show how much of TSMC’s economics now depend on customers adopting leading-edge processes, where the company’s process yield, equipment coordination and ecosystem are hardest to replicate.

Capacity, packaging and the next nodes
TSMC’s growth plan includes the 2-nanometer ramp, N2P and A16 technologies in 2026, and A14 planned for 2028. Advanced packaging such as CoWoS, InFO and SoIC is increasingly important because AI systems combine multiple dies and high-bandwidth memory in tightly integrated packages.
The company is also expanding capacity in Taiwan, Arizona, Japan and Germany. Geographic expansion can bring production closer to customers and governments, but overseas fabs add construction, labor, supply-chain and execution complexity. TSMC expects robust AI demand in 2026 even with macroeconomic uncertainty.

The numbers are not directly interchangeable: Nvidia and Broadcom report product and software revenue, while TSMC reports foundry revenue tied to wafer manufacturing and packaging. TSMC’s customer count also does not eliminate concentration by process node or by a few very large customers.
Growth drivers side by side
Nvidia: maximum sensitivity to AI spending
Nvidia has the most immediate operating leverage to AI capital expenditure. When a cloud provider accelerates a cluster build-out, it can purchase accelerators, networking and systems in the same program. A successful platform refresh therefore raises both unit volume and the amount of Nvidia content per deployment.
The sensitivity works in both directions. If customers delay projects because of financing, power availability, data-center construction or uncertain returns on AI services, Nvidia can feel the slowdown quickly. The company’s opportunity is largest where customers standardize on its software and interconnects; its vulnerability is that a few buyers account for a large share of industry spending.

Broadcom: custom AI plus recurring infrastructure software
Broadcom participates in AI without depending exclusively on a merchant accelerator. Custom XPUs, switches, optical links and other connectivity products can grow as hyperscalers design more of their own systems. At the same time, software subscriptions and renewals provide a cash-flow base that is less tied to each semiconductor quarter.
VMware Cloud Foundation and private-cloud modernization can increase software demand as enterprises consolidate infrastructure. Cross-selling is an additional lever: a customer adopting one security, mainframe or storage product may have reasons to standardize on more of Broadcom’s portfolio.
TSMC: demand from many designers and technology transitions
TSMC benefits when the industry moves to more advanced nodes, regardless of which fabless designer wins a particular end market. AI and high-performance computing are important current drivers, but smartphones, automotive electronics, networking and other applications also use its processes.

Node transitions and advanced packaging can raise revenue per wafer and deepen customer dependence. The 2-nanometer family, later A14 production, and packaging technologies such as CoWoS, InFO and SoIC are intended to extend that technology lead. Capacity must arrive on time, however; a process roadmap creates value only when yields and volume production meet customer schedules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risk comparison: what can break each thesis
Nvidia risks
- Infrastructure bottlenecks: Customers need data-center space, electricity, networking capacity and financing. A chip order can be delayed even when end-user AI demand remains strong.
- Export controls and China restrictions: Rules can shrink the addressable market, require redesigned products or lead to inventory charges.
- Customer concentration: A small number of hyperscalers and other large buyers can influence orders, product specifications and pricing.
- System mix and margins: Selling complete systems can capture more value but may pressure gross margin compared with selling individual chips.
- Rapid transitions: Each new platform must move from design to reliable, high-volume production without disrupting existing customers.
- Competitive alternatives: Customers may use custom silicon or competing accelerators for selected workloads, reducing the portion of spending directed to Nvidia.
Broadcom risks
- Semiconductor cyclicality: Networking, storage and industrial demand can weaken with macroeconomic conditions and inventory corrections.
- Large-customer dependence: One customer represented 32% of fiscal 2025 net revenue, so a program change can have an outsized effect.
- Trade restrictions: Export rules and supply-chain controls can affect both semiconductor sales and customer projects.
- Custom-chip execution: Design schedules, specifications and production ramps are negotiated with major customers; delays can move revenue between periods or reduce expected volume.
- Acquisition integration: Software growth depends partly on integrating acquired portfolios and retaining customers through product and licensing changes.
- Renewal and licensing risk: Subscription transitions can improve recurring revenue, but customers may resist price increases, reduce seats or switch products.
TSMC risks
- Taiwan and regional geopolitics: Conflict, blockade, diplomatic escalation or other disruption could interrupt production and shipping.
- Capital intensity: Leading-edge fabs and packaging facilities require sustained investment before capacity generates revenue. Lower utilization can depress returns.
- Power and water: Semiconductor manufacturing needs reliable supplies of both. Shortages, regulation or infrastructure failures can constrain output.
- Overseas-fab execution: New sites in Arizona, Japan and Germany add geographic resilience but also construction, staffing, supplier and yield challenges.
- Export and regulatory uncertainty: Rules governing advanced technology can restrict which customers, products or locations TSMC can serve.
- Currency exposure: Based on 2025 results, TSMC states that a 1% depreciation of the US dollar against the New Taiwan dollar would lower operating margin by approximately 0.3 percentage points.
- Technology and utilization cycles: A delayed node, weak end-market demand or excess industry capacity can reduce factory utilization and profitability.
Comparison by the dimensions that matter to investors
| Dimension | Nvidia | Broadcom | TSMC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value-chain position | Platform designer and system supplier | Component, custom-silicon and software supplier | Manufacturer and process-technology provider |
| AI-capex sensitivity | Highest and most direct | High through custom silicon and networking, moderated by software | High, but spread across many chip designers and end markets |
| Diversification | Increasing product breadth, but revenue is heavily Data Center-led | Semiconductors plus infrastructure software | Broad customer and product base, with leading-edge concentration |
| Capital intensity | Lower manufacturing intensity than a foundry; systems and supply commitments still matter | Mixed: outsourced semiconductor model plus software operations | Highest because it owns and expands advanced manufacturing capacity |
| Recurring-revenue visibility | Software ecosystem supports adoption, but disclosed revenue is dominated by hardware and systems | Strongest of the three because of subscriptions, licenses and renewals | Revenue is tied to wafer and packaging demand rather than software subscriptions |
| Technology or ecosystem moat | CUDA, integrated platforms, networking and developer adoption | Custom-design know-how, connectivity portfolio and enterprise software installed base | Process leadership, scale, yields, capacity and advanced packaging |
| Geographic and geopolitical exposure | Global customer base and export-control exposure | Global customer base, trade restrictions and customer-specific exposure | Exceptional Taiwan exposure, plus overseas-fab and cross-border regulatory risk |
Which company benefits most from AI?
If “benefits most” means the greatest direct sensitivity to each dollar of AI data-center spending, Nvidia is the clear answer. Its fiscal 2026 Data Center revenue of $193.7 billion and 71.1% gross margin show how much value the current platform captures. The same concentration makes the outcome more volatile if AI projects are delayed or customers shift toward internal alternatives.
If the goal is to participate in AI while owning a broader infrastructure mix, Broadcom offers a different profile. Custom accelerators and networking provide AI upside, while infrastructure software supplies a substantial second engine. The 32% contribution from one fiscal 2025 customer means “diversified” does not mean low concentration risk.
If the goal is exposure to the manufacturing bottleneck serving many designers, TSMC is the closest fit. It can benefit from Nvidia, Broadcom and other customers at the same time, and its 2025 advanced-technology mix demonstrates the value of its leading-edge processes. That breadth comes with the most visible geopolitical and capital-cycle risk.

Choose the exposure, not just the ticker
- Start with the economic layer you want. Select platform demand for Nvidia, a blend of custom silicon and software for Broadcom, or manufacturing capacity and process leadership for TSMC.
- Decide how much AI concentration you can tolerate. Nvidia is most exposed to AI build-out timing. Broadcom spreads exposure across AI infrastructure and software. TSMC spreads customer exposure but remains tied to semiconductor utilization and leading-edge investment.
- Stress-test the key bottleneck. For Nvidia, examine data-center power, customer budgets, export rules and platform transitions. For Broadcom, examine custom-program concentration, software renewals and integration. For TSMC, examine Taiwan risk, fab execution, currency and utilization.
- Separate growth from durability. Nvidia’s growth rate is the most dramatic in the supplied periods. Broadcom’s software base can make cash flows more durable. TSMC’s moat rests on process technology and capacity that require continuous reinvestment.
- Match the company to a portfolio role. A high-growth AI platform, a diversified infrastructure compounder and a foundry supplier can all be attractive, but they should not be expected to behave the same way during a semiconductor downturn or geopolitical shock.
What to monitor in future results
Nvidia indicators
- Data Center compute versus networking growth.
- Adoption and production timing for Blackwell and successor platforms.
- Gross-margin movement as systems become a larger part of sales.

- New export restrictions or inventory charges tied to affected markets.
Broadcom indicators
- Custom AI-accelerator and AI-networking growth relative to the wider semiconductor segment.
- Infrastructure-software subscription adoption, renewal behavior and VMware Cloud Foundation demand.
- Revenue concentration by major customer and changes in program schedules.
- Progress integrating software products and retaining the installed base.
- Semiconductor inventory and end-market conditions outside AI.
TSMC indicators
- 2-nanometer ramp, N2P and A16 progress, and the timetable for A14.
- Share of wafer revenue from advanced nodes and demand for advanced packaging.
- Fab utilization, yield and capital-spending execution in Taiwan and overseas.
- Customer and government responses to export controls and geographic diversification.
- Power, water, currency and geopolitical developments that could affect operating margin or output.
Bottom line
Nvidia, Broadcom and TSMC are complementary pieces of the AI and semiconductor economy, not substitutes. Nvidia offers the strongest direct participation in AI-compute spending and the fastest reported growth, with concentration and execution risks attached. Broadcom combines meaningful AI silicon and networking exposure with a 42% fiscal 2025 infrastructure-software revenue share, making it the broadest business mix of the three while leaving substantial customer and semiconductor-cycle risk. TSMC supplies the manufacturing capacity and process technology that many designers need; its scale and 2025 advanced-node mix are powerful advantages, but Taiwan geopolitics, capital intensity and factory execution define the downside.
