Build the comparison from matching reporting periods and accounting measures, then examine revenue mix, margins, cash generation, competitive advantages, execution, risks and valuation. As of October 17, 2026, AMD has reported detailed results through its quarter ended June 27, 2026, while a directly comparable Nvidia quarterly data set is not established in the available official filings. That makes a complete numerical winner premature.
AMD’s latest reported quarter shows why the framework matters: revenue was $11.536 billion, up 50% year over year, but the growth was heavily concentrated in Data Center products. A useful Nvidia-versus-AMD decision therefore depends on how each company’s data-center opportunity converts into profitable, durable cash flow—not on revenue growth alone.

What a meaningful Nvidia-versus-AMD comparison must answer
Chip stocks can look similar on a price chart while having very different businesses underneath. A sound comparison answers six separate questions:
- How quickly are total revenue and the important segments growing?
- Are gross margin, operating margin, earnings and cash flow improving with that growth?
- How diversified is the business across data-center, PC, gaming, embedded and other markets?
- What hardware, software, customer relationships and manufacturing capacity make demand durable?
- Which risks could interrupt shipments or reduce the addressable market?
- Does the share price already assume an unusually strong future?
Use the same quarter or fiscal year for both companies, the same GAAP or non-GAAP basis, and the same share-price date. Mixing AMD’s latest quarter with an older Nvidia quarter, or comparing AMD GAAP earnings with Nvidia adjusted earnings, can create a false conclusion.

Set the comparison period and accounting basis first
Use synchronized reporting periods
Begin by recording the fiscal quarter-end date for each company. Semiconductor companies can have different fiscal calendars, so “second quarter” does not necessarily mean the same months. Compare a period that covers broadly similar economic conditions, and label any calendar mismatch.
For the current evidence, AMD’s latest detailed release covers the quarter ended June 27, 2026. The available Nvidia investor-relations page lists a 2026 annual report, but its linked document was not retrievable for this comparison. No matching Nvidia quarterly revenue, margin or earnings figures should therefore be presented as if they were established. Check Nvidia’s annual reports and proxy index and its corresponding quarterly filing before constructing a side-by-side table.
Keep GAAP and non-GAAP measures separate
GAAP figures include the accounting effects recorded under generally accepted accounting principles. Companies may also publish non-GAAP figures that exclude selected items such as amortization, stock-based compensation or special charges. Neither basis is automatically “right,” but combining them is invalid. Show both only when each company reports both on a consistent definition, and explain material adjustments.

Q2 2026 results
Advanced Micro Devices reported the following GAAP results for the quarter ended June 27, 2026, in its Q2 2026 financial release:
| Measure | AMD Q2 2026 | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $11.536 billion, up 50% year over year | Measures top-line growth for the quarter |
| GAAP gross profit | $6.203 billion | Revenue left after cost of sales |
| GAAP gross margin | 54% | Shows product economics before operating expenses |
| GAAP operating income | $1.990 billion | Profit from operations after operating expenses |
| GAAP net income | $2.297 billion | Bottom-line earnings attributable to the period |
Segment revenue was $6.7 billion in Data Center, $3.8 billion in Client and Gaming, and $977 million in Embedded. Those figures add to approximately the reported total after rounding. Data Center grew 107% year over year, Client and Gaming grew 6%, and Embedded grew 19%.
Within Client and Gaming, Client revenue was $3.1 billion and Gaming revenue was $779 million. Gaming declined 31% year over year because of lower semi-custom revenue. That split matters: a strong combined segment can conceal weakness in a particular end market.
Using the reported total, Data Center represented approximately 58% of Q2 revenue, Client and Gaming about 33%, and Embedded about 8.5%. These are calculated shares and are rounded; they are not additional company guidance.

| AMD FY2025 segment | Revenue | Approximate share of FY2025 revenue | Reported context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Center | $16.6 billion | 48% | Growth driven primarily by fifth-generation EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 GPUs |
| Client and Gaming | $14.6 billion | 42% | Supported by Ryzen processors, semi-custom console SoCs and Radeon gaming GPUs |
| Embedded | $3.5 billion | 10% | Revenue declined 3% |
The approximate shares are calculated from the company’s rounded segment figures and total revenue. They show that AMD was not solely a data-center company in FY2025, even though Data Center was its largest segment and its fastest major growth engine in the latest quarter.
Adjust for unusual items
AMD disclosed approximately $440 million of FY2025 net inventory and related charges associated with U.S. government export controls on MI308 data-center GPU products. The Q2 2026 release also states that Q2 2025 included $800 million of inventory and related charges from those controls. These amounts belong to different reporting periods and must not be combined or substituted for one another.
When comparing earnings quality, calculate results both including and excluding a clearly identified unusual charge, but do not erase the economic impact. Export restrictions can affect inventory, product availability, pricing and future demand even when an analyst presents an adjusted earnings figure.

How to obtain the Nvidia side without creating a false comparison
Do not fill missing Nvidia figures with a stock quote, a data-vendor estimate or an older quarter and label it “current.” Instead:
- Open Nvidia’s official annual-report and proxy index and select the filing that matches the AMD period as closely as possible.
- Record total revenue, GAAP gross margin, operating income, net income, diluted EPS and operating cash flow.
- Copy the company’s reported segment definitions and segment revenue; Nvidia’s categories may not map directly to AMD’s Data Center, Client and Gaming, and Embedded labels.
- Note the fiscal-period dates, currency, share count and any one-time charges.
- Only then calculate growth rates, margins, valuation multiples and per-share measures on a comparable basis.
Until that filing is reviewed, the defensible conclusion is limited: AMD’s current operating results are measurable, while a synchronized Nvidia-versus-AMD numerical verdict remains open.
Compare growth by mix, not just by percentage
Measure the source of growth
For each company, separate growth into data-center accelerators and processors, general-purpose server CPUs, PCs, gaming, networking, embedded products and other reported categories. A company growing 50% because one newly launched product is shipping into a constrained market has a different risk profile from one growing 25% across several end markets.
AMD’s Q2 2026 result illustrates this concentration. Data Center revenue rose 107% year over year, while Client and Gaming rose 6% and Embedded rose 19%. The latest quarter therefore shows exceptional data-center momentum alongside much slower growth in the combined Client and Gaming segment and a decline in the Gaming subcategory.

Revenue can rise because a company sells more units, charges higher prices, sells a richer product mix, or recognizes a large customer deployment. Read management’s explanation and the filing’s segment notes for evidence of product mix and customer demand. Do not treat an announced partnership or future deployment as booked revenue unless the company has reported the sale.

Look for durability across periods
Compare year-over-year and sequential growth, then inspect at least several quarters. Data-center orders can be lumpy, and semiconductor customers may build inventory ahead of a launch or reduce purchases after an inventory correction. A single quarter is a starting point, not a complete growth thesis.
Compare profitability and earnings quality
Use a margin bridge
Start with gross margin, then operating margin, then net margin. Gross margin shows the economics of the products sold; operating margin includes research, development, sales and administration; net margin also reflects interest, taxes and other non-operating items. Calculate each as the relevant profit divided by revenue.
AMD’s Q2 2026 GAAP gross margin was 54%. Its GAAP operating income of $1.990 billion was approximately 17.3% of revenue, and GAAP net income of $2.297 billion was approximately 19.9% of revenue, calculated from the reported figures. The net margin being higher than operating margin reflects items below operating income and should be investigated rather than assumed to recur.

For each company, create a reconciliation with these columns:
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Reported GAAP profit | What did the company record under standard accounting? |
| Adjusted profit | Which exclusions does management make, and are they recurring? |
| Stock-based compensation | How much dilution or expense is being excluded? |
| Inventory and regulatory charges | Are unusual items tied to a risk that could happen again? |
| Operating cash flow | Does cash generation support reported earnings? |
AMD’s FY2025 GAAP and non-GAAP operating income were $3.694 billion and $7.768 billion, respectively. That large difference makes the reconciliation essential; an investor should identify the excluded items before relying on the higher adjusted figure.
Check per-share dilution
Use diluted weighted-average shares, not just net income, when comparing EPS. Stock compensation, acquisitions and equity issuance can increase the share count even when total profit rises. Compare buybacks with dilution and examine whether per-share growth keeps pace with operating growth.
Evaluate competitive position and ecosystem
Hardware is only one part of the product
Compare performance on the workloads customers actually buy: AI training, AI inference, scientific computing, cloud services, enterprise applications, gaming and edge workloads. Include performance per watt, memory capacity and bandwidth, system availability, networking and the cost of deploying a complete system.
AMD’s regulatory filing identifies Nvidia’s data-center GPU position and proprietary software ecosystem as competitive factors. That is AMD’s disclosed competitor perspective, not an independent market-share study. Treat it as evidence of the competitive issue AMD faces, not as a neutral measurement of market share.

Assess software and switching costs
Ask whether developers can port applications easily, which libraries and frameworks are supported, how mature the tools are, and whether customers have trained staff around a particular platform. A technically fast chip can still struggle if software migration is costly or uncertain. Conversely, software advantages can weaken if open standards, compatibility layers or customer-designed alternatives improve.
Compare system-level offerings
Modern data-center buyers may purchase accelerators, CPUs, networking, memory, software, support and validated systems together. Compare each company’s ability to supply and support the full configuration, not merely a chip’s benchmark result. Verify whether announced systems are shipping, in qualification or only planned.
Test execution, supply and customer concentration
Product-cycle execution
Track announced launch dates against volume availability, customer qualification and reported revenue. Semiconductor product cycles are rapid; a delayed node, packaging constraint or software release can shift an entire year’s opportunity. Review the next-generation product schedule in each company’s filings, but label it as a plan until shipments are reported.
Manufacturing and capacity
Examine reliance on outside foundries, advanced packaging, memory suppliers and data-center construction. Even strong demand cannot become revenue if wafers, packaging, power or customer facilities are unavailable. A company’s ability to secure capacity can be as important as the design itself.
Customer and geographic concentration
Read concentration disclosures and major-customer risk factors. A small number of cloud or system customers can create bargaining pressure and abrupt order changes. Also examine exposure to countries, export rules and end markets. Concentration is not automatically bad, but it increases the importance of contract terms and customer capital spending.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the semiconductor risks before valuing either stock
Cyclicality and inventory corrections
AMD describes semiconductors as highly cyclical, with supply-and-demand swings, rapid technology change, new product introductions, price erosion and downturn risk. A strong quarter can be followed by customer inventory reductions. Compare channel inventory commentary, order trends and gross-margin direction rather than extrapolating one growth rate indefinitely.
Customer-developed alternatives
AMD’s filings warn that customers developing their own AI chips could reduce the company’s addressable market. The same analytical question belongs in an Nvidia review: determine which workloads are likely to remain merchant-silicon purchases and which could move to internally designed hardware.
Data-center capacity, energy and capital
AMD states that customer investment in AI infrastructure can be constrained by data-center capacity, energy availability, construction delays and capital availability. These are disclosed risks, not a prediction that demand will weaken. In your model, test a delay scenario in which deployments move into later quarters rather than treating every announced project as immediate revenue.

Export controls and geopolitics
Export controls can affect product specifications, eligible customers, inventory and recorded charges. AMD’s MI308-related charges demonstrate why regulatory exposure belongs in both the income-statement review and the risk analysis. Check each company’s own disclosure before assigning the same exposure, timing or financial effect to both.
Compare valuation only after the operating work
No synchronized price, market capitalization, enterprise value or analyst-estimate snapshot is established here. Do not quote a current P/E or price-to-sales multiple without recording the exact share-price date, share count, fiscal period and earnings definition.
Build a consistent valuation table
| Valuation measure | Calculation | Best use | Main warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market capitalization | Share price multiplied by diluted shares outstanding | Compare equity value | Ignores debt and cash |
| Enterprise value | Market capitalization plus debt minus cash and equivalents | Compare operating businesses | Requires current balance-sheet data |
| Price-to-GAAP earnings | Share price divided by diluted GAAP EPS | Value current reported profit | Can be distorted by unusual charges or cycle lows |
| Price-to-free-cash-flow | Market capitalization divided by trailing or forward free cash flow | Value cash generation | Capital spending and working capital can swing sharply |
| EV-to-revenue | Enterprise value divided by revenue | Compare early or rapidly growing businesses | Does not show profitability |
Use scenarios instead of one target multiple
Model at least three cases for each company: a base case, a higher-growth case and a lower-growth case. Vary data-center growth, gross margin, operating expense, capital spending, share count and the timing of customer deployments. A stock can be cheaper on trailing earnings yet more expensive on normalized earnings if its current profit is unusually high or low.

Account for dilution and cash use
Enterprise value and per-share value change when companies issue stock, repurchase shares, acquire businesses or build inventory. Include diluted shares and expected cash spending in the valuation rather than relying on a headline market-cap comparison.
A practical Nvidia-versus-AMD comparison workflow
- Set the date. Write down the share-price date and the fiscal periods being compared.
- Collect primary filings. Use AMD’s Q2 2026 release and filings, then obtain the corresponding Nvidia quarterly or annual filing from its investor-relations index.
- Normalize accounting. Put GAAP metrics in one table and non-GAAP metrics in a separate table. Record every material adjustment.
- Map segments. List each company’s reported categories and explain where the definitions do not line up.
- Calculate mix. Divide each segment’s revenue by total revenue and identify which segments account for incremental growth.
- Check quality. Compare gross margin, operating margin, net income, operating cash flow, capital spending, inventory and diluted shares.
- Review the moat. Assess hardware, software, ecosystem, customer adoption, supply, support and switching costs for the workloads that matter.
- Stress-test risks. Model export restrictions, customer-built alternatives, capacity delays, inventory corrections and product delays.
- Value consistently. Use the same price date and the same trailing or forward measure for both companies.
- Write the conclusion conditionally. State which assumptions make one stock more attractive and what evidence would invalidate that view.
How to interpret AMD management’s outlook
AMD CFO Jean Hu said, “We expect Data Center sales to accelerate in the second half of 2026, driving stronger overall revenue growth and continued earnings expansion.” This is forward-looking company commentary, not a realized result. Treat it as an assumption to test against subsequent shipments, segment revenue, margins and cash flow.
A disciplined investor should ask what must happen for that outlook to be achieved: continued EPYC and Instinct demand, sufficient manufacturing and packaging capacity, customer data-center readiness, acceptable export conditions and stable pricing. The same test should be applied to any Nvidia forecast or management target.
Decision framework: what different investors should emphasize
| If your priority is… | Emphasize | Evidence to demand |
|---|---|---|
| High growth | Data-center growth, product ramp and addressable market | Multi-quarter shipment growth and customer adoption, not announcements alone |
| Profit quality | GAAP margins, operating cash flow and recurring adjustments | Reconciliations, cash conversion and normalized margins |
| Diversification | PC, gaming, embedded, networking and server mix | Segment stability when one market slows |
| Competitive durability | Software, ecosystem, switching costs and system support | Developer adoption, production deployments and retention |
| Valuation discipline | Enterprise value, normalized earnings and free cash flow | Same-date multiples under several scenarios |
| Risk control | Export rules, supply, customer concentration and cyclicality | Company-specific filings and downside cases |
What the current evidence supports—and what it does not
The evidence supports a detailed view of AMD’s current operating performance: rapid Q2 2026 growth, a Data Center-led mix, measurable GAAP profitability and identifiable exposure to export controls and infrastructure constraints. It also supports using AMD’s own filing as evidence that Nvidia’s data-center GPU position and software ecosystem are important competitive factors.
It does not support declaring Nvidia or AMD the better stock from a synchronized valuation, quarter-by-quarter growth or relative-margin perspective, because the corresponding Nvidia figures and price snapshot are not established here. A credible conclusion must wait until those inputs are collected on the same basis.
Bottom line
Compare Nvidia and AMD as operating businesses first and stocks second. Start with matching filings, separate GAAP from non-GAAP results, trace growth to specific segments, test competitive and supply advantages, model regulatory and infrastructure risks, and only then compare valuation. AMD’s reported Q2 2026 numbers show powerful Data Center momentum, but that fact alone is not enough to identify the superior investment. The better choice depends on the price paid for each company’s verified, sustainable cash-flow outlook.
