Short answer: NVIDIA has become a serious producer of open models, but Nemotron 3 does not prove that it has overtaken OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, or other leaders in consumer chatbot usage or overall frontier-model mindshare. Its stronger position is in an integrated, infrastructure-focused segment: NVIDIA now offers models, weights, datasets, training recipes, evaluation tools, inference software, hosted APIs, and enterprise deployment through one ecosystem.

As of August 18, 2026, Nemotron 3 is a family of three principal models—Nano, Super, and Ultra—built primarily for long-context reasoning, coding, tool use, and agentic workloads. The strategic significance is larger than any single benchmark: NVIDIA is using models to make its hardware and software stack more useful, more efficient, and easier for businesses to adopt.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The short version

  • Nemotron 3 is a model family, not one chatbot. Nano, Super, and Ultra target different combinations of cost, capability, context length, and deployment scale.
  • All three principal models have now been released. Nano arrived first in December 2025, Super followed in March 2026, and Ultra in June 2026.
  • The models are open-weight and broadly released, but “fully open source” is too simple. Weights, data, recipes, and software can have different licenses and redistribution conditions.
  • NVIDIA’s main advantage is integration. Nemotron connects to NVIDIA GPUs, TensorRT-LLM, NIM, NeMo, hosted APIs, and enterprise infrastructure.
  • Performance claims need context. NVIDIA reports strong throughput and benchmark results, but those figures depend on hardware, precision, serving software, input length, output length, and the comparison set.

The most accurate conclusion is that NVIDIA has become a major open-model maker and model-development platform, particularly for agentic AI. That is different from becoming the market’s dominant general-purpose chatbot company.

What is Nemotron 3?

Nemotron 3 is NVIDIA’s latest family of foundation models for text generation, reasoning, coding, tool use, and autonomous or semi-autonomous AI agents. Its three main versions are:

#1 Best Overall

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1a, 2.5-slot design, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Model Scale Primary role Deployment profile
Nano 31.6 billion total parameters; approximately 3.2 billion active parameters. NVIDIA also describes a 3.6-billion-parameter figure including embeddings. High-volume inference, coding, reasoning, tool use, and specialized agents. The practical starting point for individual developers and smaller teams.
Super 120 billion total parameters; 12 billion active parameters. Collaborative agents, long-context reasoning, and production-scale workloads. A substantial model requiring serious GPU infrastructure for self-hosting.
Ultra 550 billion total parameters; 55 billion active parameters. Long-running autonomous agents, coding, research, and demanding enterprise workflows. Primarily a cloud, enterprise, or multi-GPU deployment choice.

All three are described by NVIDIA as open models aimed at agentic, reasoning, and conversational applications. The family overview and release history are available from NVIDIA Research and the company’s Nemotron project page.

Total parameters versus active parameters

Nemotron 3 uses a mixture-of-experts, or MoE, design. The total parameter count describes the full model, including experts that are not used for every token. The active parameter count describes the approximate amount of model capacity activated during each forward pass.

That distinction explains part of NVIDIA’s efficiency argument. A 55-billion-active-parameter model may require less computation per token than a dense 550-billion-parameter model, but it is not identical to a dense 55-billion-parameter model. The full weight set still affects memory requirements, loading time, routing, parallelism, storage, and serving complexity.

Nemotron 3’s architecture: why NVIDIA emphasizes efficiency

The family uses a hybrid Mamba–Transformer mixture-of-experts architecture. Transformer components provide the familiar strengths of modern language models, including general-purpose reasoning and instruction following. Mamba components are designed to process long sequences with lower sequence-state and key-value-cache costs in appropriate workloads.

The practical idea is not that Mamba replaces Transformers in every respect. It is that a hybrid design may make long-running conversations, large codebases, multi-step agent traces, and extended research tasks more manageable while retaining Transformer-based capabilities where they matter most. NVIDIA explains the architecture in its Nemotron 3 white paper and the Ultra technical report.

NVIDIA highlights several related features:

  • Up to one million tokens of advertised context: This can reduce the need to split documents, codebases, or agent histories into many smaller requests.
  • Inference-time reasoning-budget control: Developers can adjust how much reasoning the model is allowed to use, trading potential quality against latency and token consumption.
  • Multi-environment reinforcement learning: Post-training is designed around interactions with tools and environments rather than only static question-and-answer examples.
  • LatentMoE: Included in Super and Ultra as part of their efficiency and reasoning design.
  • Multi-Token Prediction: Included in Super and Ultra to help improve generation efficiency.
  • NVFP4 training: NVIDIA uses its low-precision NVFP4 approach in the training of Super and Ultra, connecting model design to the company’s accelerated-computing hardware.

A one-million-token limit is a maximum capability, not a guarantee of reliable retrieval or reasoning uniformly across one million tokens. Real performance depends on where relevant information appears, how the prompt is structured, the model’s attention behavior, memory use, latency, and the serving system.

What was released, and when?

The timeline matters because the initial announcement described a family that was not yet complete:

  1. December 15, 2025: NVIDIA announced Nemotron 3 and initially released Nano. Super and Ultra were promised for the first half of 2026.
  2. March 10–11, 2026: Nemotron 3 Super became available.
  3. April 28, 2026: NVIDIA released Nemotron 3 Nano Omni, a separate Nano variant adding native audio support alongside text, images, and video.
  4. June 4, 2026: NVIDIA released Nemotron 3 Ultra.
  5. By August 18, 2026: NVIDIA’s developer materials presented Nemotron as a broader ecosystem covering models, routing, deployment, datasets, agent development, and evaluation.

That progression makes the story more significant than a one-off language-model launch. NVIDIA has continued adding model sizes, modalities, distribution channels, and development tools. The original announcement is at NVIDIA News; the Super and Nano Omni releases are documented in NVIDIA’s Super announcement and Nano Omni announcement.

How open is Nemotron 3?

NVIDIA’s release is unusually broad. The company says it is providing or plans to provide:

Rank #2
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming OC 16G Graphics Card, 16GB 256-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, WINDFORCE Cooling System, GV-N507TGAMING OC-16GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system
  • Model weights.
  • Base and post-trained checkpoints.
  • Quantized checkpoints for later models.
  • Training data where NVIDIA has redistribution rights.
  • Pre-training and post-training recipes.
  • Training software and reinforcement-learning environments.
  • Evaluation tools and related datasets.

That is much more transparent and reusable than a closed API, but the phrase “fully open source” should be avoided. Model weights, training datasets, recipes, and software may be governed by separate licenses. “Open” also does not mean that every piece of data used in every stage can be redistributed without restriction.

There are also two data figures that require careful wording. The launch materials refer to three trillion tokens of new pre-training, post-training, and reinforcement-learning datasets. The white paper describes a broader plan involving more than 10 trillion tokens of datasets. Those numbers appear to refer to different subsets or stages of a larger release effort. They should not be presented as if they were interchangeable totals. NVIDIA’s family page, white paper, and launch announcement should be consulted for the applicable data and license terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For commercial use, a buyer should inspect the license for the exact checkpoint, the rights attached to training data, redistribution requirements, acceptable-use restrictions, and any obligations created by fine-tuning or incorporating the model into a product.

Nano, Super, and Ultra compared in practice

Nemotron 3 Nano

Nano is the entry point. Its relatively small active-parameter count makes it suitable for high-volume inference, coding assistants, structured extraction, tool selection, and specialized agents where a company may need many simultaneous requests.

NVIDIA reports that Nano outperforms GPT-OSS-20B and Qwen3-30B-A3B-Thinking-2507 on selected benchmarks. It also reports up to 3.3 times the inference throughput of Qwen3-30B-A3B and 2.2 times that of GPT-OSS-20B in an 8K-input, 16K-output test on a single H200. Those are NVIDIA-reported results, not universal rankings. The result can change with model versions, precision, batching, concurrency, prompt length, output length, and serving stack.

Nano is also the easiest model to try through a hosted service. NVIDIA provides a Build prototype endpoint with an OpenAI-compatible API. A minimal example is:

from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://integrate.api.nvidia.com/v1",
    api_key="$NVIDIA_API_KEY"
)

completion = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="nvidia/nemotron-3-nano-30b-a3b",
    messages=[{"role":"user","content":"..."}],
    temperature=1,
    top_p=1,
    max_tokens=16384,
    extra_body={"reasoning_budget":16384},
    stream=True
)

The page labels this a free prototype endpoint. Developers should still check current rate limits, data-handling terms, availability, and trial conditions before using it in production.

Nemotron 3 Super

Super is the middle tier: 120 billion total parameters and 12 billion active parameters. NVIDIA positions it for collaborative agents, multi-agent systems, long-context reasoning, and higher-volume production workloads.

NVIDIA reports a five-times throughput advantage in a relevant agentic-inference comparison and reports an 85.6% PinchBench score. The latter is useful as a data point, but PinchBench is a newer or less-established benchmark than the tests many readers use to compare general-purpose models. It should not be treated as a definitive ranking against every commercial or open model.

Super is available through NVIDIA Build, Perplexity, OpenRouter, Hugging Face, and other channels. For teams that want to self-host, its total weight size and serving requirements are much more demanding than Nano’s. It is best viewed as a serious infrastructure model rather than a casual laptop download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nemotron 3 Ultra

Ultra is the family’s largest model at 550 billion total parameters and 55 billion active parameters. NVIDIA targets long-running autonomous agents, coding, research, and demanding enterprise workflows.

In its technical report, NVIDIA reports up to approximately six times higher inference throughput than selected publicly available models while achieving comparable accuracy in the company’s evaluation. Under an 8K-input, 64K-output setup, the report gives comparisons including:

  • 5.9 times the throughput of GLM-5.1-754B-A40B.
  • 4.8 times the throughput of Kimi-K2.6-1T-A32B.
  • 1.6 times the throughput of Qwen-3.5-397B-17B.

These are throughput-to-accuracy claims under specified test conditions. They do not establish that Ultra is universally more capable, less expensive, or better than every competing model. They also do not translate directly to non-NVIDIA hardware or to a workload with different prompt lengths, output lengths, batching, quantization, or agent-loop behavior.

The real product is the NVIDIA stack

A shallow reading treats Nemotron 3 as NVIDIA’s attempt to compete directly with chatbot companies. The more important business interpretation is that NVIDIA is extending its position across the AI stack:

  1. Hardware: GPUs and accelerated systems.
  2. Inference optimization: TensorRT-LLM, NIM, and hardware-aware formats such as NVFP4.
  3. Training infrastructure: NeMo, NeMo RL, NeMo Gym, and evaluation tooling.
  4. Foundation models: Nemotron 3 and related model families.
  5. Hosted access: NVIDIA Build and partner inference providers.
  6. Enterprise deployment: NIM microservices and self-hosted infrastructure.
  7. Agent development: Routing, memory, tools, evaluation, and multi-agent workflows.

NVIDIA’s developer hub places Nemotron alongside TensorRT-LLM, vLLM, SGLang, NeMo Switchyard, datasets, cookbooks, deployment guides, and agent workshops. The goal is to reduce the friction between choosing a model, training or adapting it, evaluating it, and serving it on NVIDIA infrastructure.

This matters commercially even if Nemotron never becomes the world’s most popular chatbot. A model that is efficient on NVIDIA hardware can increase demand for GPUs, make NIM and TensorRT-LLM more valuable, encourage enterprise customers to use NVIDIA’s supported deployment path, and give cloud partners another reason to offer NVIDIA-optimized inference.

NVIDIA describes NIM as a set of optimized inference microservices that can run across cloud, data-center, workstation, and edge environments. It combines standard APIs with self-hosting options, optimized runtimes, and enterprise support. The model weights may be available without a model license fee, while deployment, GPUs, storage, engineering, monitoring, and support still carry costs.

What the performance claims do—and do not—prove

Nemotron 3’s competitive argument is not only raw benchmark accuracy. NVIDIA is emphasizing the combination of sparse activation, hybrid sequence processing, long context, low-precision training, and agent-focused post-training.

  • WINDFORCE Cooling System
  • Hawk Fan
  • Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
  • RGB Lighting

That distinction is important for businesses. An agent may call a model repeatedly to plan, select tools, inspect results, verify an answer, and retry a failed operation. The relevant metric is therefore not simply “which model scored highest on a benchmark?” It may be:

  • Cost per completed task rather than cost per generated token.
  • Time to a correct result rather than raw tokens per second.
  • Reliability across tool calls and retries.
  • Memory use at the organization’s actual context length.
  • Throughput at the required concurrency.
  • Quality after quantization and production serving.

Sparse MoE models can reduce computation per token, but their total weights still affect memory and distributed serving. A one-million-token context can simplify application architecture while increasing prompt-processing time and memory use. A higher reasoning budget may improve difficult tasks while increasing latency and output cost. These trade-offs have to be measured on the actual workload.

For that reason, NVIDIA’s 3.3-times, five-times, and approximately six-times figures should be treated as vendor-reported evidence of a promising design—not as a blanket promise of lower total operating costs or superior quality in every application.

Where developers can use Nemotron 3

Hosted prototypes

The fastest official trial route is NVIDIA Build’s Nano endpoint. It uses an OpenAI-compatible interface and is labeled free for prototyping. OpenRouter also lists a free Nano endpoint, which may be useful for experimentation and routing. Its page specifically warns users not to submit confidential information or personal data to the free endpoint and describes possible logging for security and product improvement. See the OpenRouter listing for current terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free access should be treated as a test environment, not as a substitute for a production data-processing agreement, guaranteed capacity, or enterprise support.

Managed production inference

Together AI describes Nano as available for production inference and offers serverless inference, provisioned throughput, dedicated inference, fine-tuning, and custom model services. That can suit a startup or product team that wants an OpenAI-compatible API without immediately operating a GPU fleet. Its current product and availability information is at Together AI. The cited material does not establish a reliable current per-token price, so buyers should check the provider’s live pricing rather than relying on an old estimate.

Self-hosting

NVIDIA publishes checkpoints through Hugging Face, including Nano, Super, and Ultra variants. Deployment paths include Transformers, vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, llama.cpp, LM Studio, and NIM, although exact support depends on the checkpoint format, quantization, hardware, and software version.

Nano is the practical entry point. Super can be appropriate for teams with substantial GPU capacity. Ultra’s 550-billion-parameter total size makes it primarily an enterprise, cloud, or multi-GPU option. Downloading weights does not make the deployment free: GPU rental or ownership, storage, networking, engineering time, observability, maintenance, and security all contribute to total cost.

Who should consider Nemotron 3?

Buyer or developer Likely fit Recommended starting point
Individual developer Testing tool use, coding, or long-context workflows without operating infrastructure. Nano through NVIDIA Build or another hosted provider.
Startup Building an agent and deciding whether to use an API or self-host. Prototype with Nano; compare managed inference and self-hosting costs on real tasks.
Enterprise Private data, governance, predictable deployment, NVIDIA GPU investment, or customization. NIM, cloud deployment, or on-premises serving after license and security review.
Frontier-scale operator Long-running agents, coding systems, research, or multi-agent workloads at high volume. Super or Ultra with multi-GPU infrastructure and workload-specific benchmarking.

Nemotron 3 is especially attractive when a team already runs NVIDIA GPUs, needs self-hosting or data control, expects high inference volume, or wants to move between hosted and managed deployment. It may be a poor fit for a buyer seeking the simplest low-cost path on non-NVIDIA hardware, a polished consumer chatbot, or a license with no ambiguity around commercial redistribution and training-data rights.

  • Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence

Nemotron 3 Nano Omni should also be kept separate from the standard Nano text models. It adds native audio support alongside text, images, and video; its capabilities and runtime requirements should be verified independently rather than assumed to apply to every Nemotron 3 checkpoint.

Risks and limitations for buyers

Open does not mean unrestricted

Review the license for the specific model and checkpoint. Check commercial-use provisions, redistribution rules, acceptable-use terms, and the rights attached to datasets and derivatives.

Free APIs are not automatically suitable for sensitive data

Prototype endpoints can have rate limits, changing availability, logging, and data-use conditions. Do not send confidential business data, personal information, or regulated information until the provider’s current terms and contractual protections have been reviewed.

Hardware compatibility matters

NVFP4, FP8, BF16, and GGUF variants can have different hardware and runtime requirements. NVIDIA-optimized throughput may not transfer to AMD GPUs, TPUs, CPUs, or an unoptimized serving stack.

Agent capability is not production safety

Agentic models can call tools, modify files, access services, or influence business workflows. Benchmark scores do not establish that an agent is safe to run without permission controls, sandboxing, audit logs, approval gates, prompt-injection defenses, and failure recovery.

Context length is not context reliability

A model may accept one million tokens while still missing, misweighting, or hallucinating information buried deep in the prompt. Test retrieval quality, latency, memory use, and cost at the context lengths your application actually needs.

What Nemotron 3 means for NVIDIA

NVIDIA’s rise in AI began with the picks and shovels: GPUs, networking, systems, and software used by other companies to train and serve models. Nemotron 3 adds a second layer to that strategy. NVIDIA can now influence not only the hardware on which AI runs, but also the model architecture, training process, precision format, inference runtime, deployment package, and developer workflow.

That creates several advantages:

  • NVIDIA can optimize its own models for its own accelerators.
  • Developers can receive a more integrated path from experimentation to deployment.
  • Enterprises can buy a supported stack rather than assemble every component themselves.
  • Cloud and infrastructure partners gain another model family to offer.
  • Open weights can expand adoption while NIM, support, hosted inference, and hardware remain monetizable.

The strategy also creates risks. If developers prefer vendor-neutral runtimes or competing open models, NVIDIA’s model-specific advantage may weaken. If independent tests do not reproduce the company’s efficiency claims, buyers may choose models based on community support, license terms, or broader hardware compatibility. And if model quality improves faster elsewhere, Nemotron may remain valuable mainly as an infrastructure showcase.

Bottom line

Nemotron 3 supports the claim that NVIDIA has become a major model maker—but in a specific sense. NVIDIA is now a substantial open-model producer with a broad development and deployment ecosystem, especially for efficient, long-context, agentic workloads.

Its models do not need to become the leading consumer chatbot to serve NVIDIA’s business. They can make the company’s GPUs, inference software, NIM microservices, hosted APIs, and enterprise support more useful. For developers, Nano is the practical starting point; Super and Ultra are infrastructure-heavy options for larger workloads.

The right buying decision depends on actual task quality, total cost per completed task, hardware, license requirements, data controls, and agent safety—not on a single “times faster” figure. NVIDIA has entered the model business in a meaningful way, but the evidence supports “major open-model and infrastructure-integrated model maker,” not “universal winner of the foundation-model market.”
