The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) identifies three principal schemes for non-residents: NRE, FCNR(B) and NRO. PAN, FATCA and CRS information may be part of the process, but no single document bundle or application route applies to every bank.
This checklist is for an Indian bank account. If “investment account” means a securities, mutual-fund or brokerage account, that provider can impose additional requirements beyond the bank-account steps described here.

Start by deciding which NRI account you need
The RBI’s FAQ on Accounts in India by Non-residents, current as of January 16, 2025, describes an NRI as “a person resident outside India who is a citizen of India.” The same FAQ also discusses PIO eligibility, including qualifying OCI cardholders who reside outside India. Your status and the purpose of the account determine which scheme is appropriate.
| Account | Currency described by RBI | Use supported by the cited material | Eligibility described by RBI |
|---|---|---|---|
| NRE | Indian rupees | A distinct rupee account scheme for non-residents | Eligible NRIs and PIOs, subject to RBI conditions |
| FCNR(B) | Foreign currency | The foreign-currency category in the RBI’s three major non-resident schemes | Eligible NRIs and PIOs, subject to RBI conditions |
| NRO | Indian rupees | Bona fide rupee transactions, with permitted credits and debits governed by RBI rules | Non-resident account holders, subject to RBI conditions |
NRE: a rupee-denominated non-resident scheme
NRE is one of the RBI-recognised rupee account categories for eligible NRIs and PIOs. Use the bank’s current product description to confirm whether its NRE offering fits your intended receipts and payments. The RBI material cited here does not establish a current interest rate, tenure, tax treatment or transfer feature, so those details must be verified directly with the institution.

FCNR(B): the foreign-currency category
FCNR(B) is the foreign-currency account scheme in the RBI’s trio. The RBI FAQ establishes the category and eligibility framework but does not, in the material considered here, set out a complete list of currencies, tenures or rates for every bank. Ask the chosen bank which currencies and terms it currently offers before applying.
NRO: a rupee account for bona fide Indian transactions
An NRO account is a rupee account governed by the Non-Resident Ordinary Rupee (NRO) Account Scheme. The RBI notification describes permitted credits and debits, including local rupee payments and certain outward remittances subject to conditions. The exact limits and conditions can change through amendments, so consult the current RBI text and your bank rather than relying on an old figure or an online summary.
Preparation checklist before you contact a bank
Use this as a preparation list to compare with the selected bank’s live instructions. It is not a guaranteed exhaustive KYC list.
- Choose the account purpose. Decide whether you need an NRE, FCNR(B) or NRO account based on the RBI descriptions and the transactions you expect. If you have more than one purpose, ask whether separate accounts are appropriate.
- Confirm your status. Have your citizenship, country of residence and any relevant PIO or OCI information ready. The RBI determines the eligibility framework; the bank decides which evidence and format it accepts.
- Prepare identity and residency details. Keep the identity and overseas-residence information requested by the institution available. Ask whether copies must be certified, notarised, attested by an embassy or consulate, or verified through another channel.
- Check your PAN record. Confirm the PAN number and whether the record is operative. If your issue is an inoperative PAN, follow the Income Tax Department’s PAN-specific process rather than treating it as the bank’s universal KYC checklist.
- Collect tax-residency information. Be ready to state the country or countries where you are tax resident and provide the identification number issued there when the bank’s FATCA/CRS form asks for it.
- Ask about onboarding logistics. Confirm whether the bank accepts applications from overseas, requires in-person verification, permits remote verification, needs an overseas address proof, accepts joint holders and requires an initial funding amount.
- Check the funding route. Before sending money, ask which remittance channels and account credits the bank accepts for the selected scheme and what references or declarations must accompany a transfer.
What PAN means in this process
PAN is a tax identifier, not a universal bank-form name
A Permanent Account Number (PAN) identifies a taxpayer in India. A bank may request PAN details as part of customer identification, tax reporting or account servicing, but the cited material does not establish one identical PAN form or document set for every NRI account opening.

When an inoperative PAN is the specific problem
An Income Tax Department notice dated July 21, 2023 addresses making an NRI’s inoperative PAN operative. It asks for a PAN copy and supporting evidence such as a passport showing the person’s NRI stay, a PIO or OCI card, or specified attested foreign identity or taxpayer-identification documents. Those examples belong to the PAN-operability procedure. They should not be presented as mandatory documents for every NRI bank application.
If a bank tells you that your PAN status is preventing onboarding, ask whether it needs proof for the PAN process, a normal KYC document, or both. Submit only the format and certification the responsible authority or bank currently specifies.
FATCA and CRS: the tax-residency declarations
Why the bank asks for these details
FATCA and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) are tax-transparency frameworks. Income Tax Department explanatory material published in 2025 describes information fields and the purpose of exchanging financial-account information. The Income-tax Rules, 2026 describe due-diligence and reporting-institution procedures, including obtaining self-certification in specified account-reporting determinations.

Keep citizenship, residence and tax residence distinct
Citizenship, immigration status, physical residence and tax residence can be different facts. An NRI account application may ask for all of them. Do not select a tax-residency answer merely because you hold an Indian passport or live outside India; use the status that applies under the relevant tax rules and obtain professional advice when your situation involves more than one country.
Do not confuse FATCA/CRS forms with an Indian tax return
The 2025 Income Tax Department note on foreign assets and foreign-source income discusses reporting in the context of Indian residents’ tax returns. That discussion is not an account-opening checklist. Whether you must file an Indian return, report foreign assets or disclose income depends on your facts, including tax residence and income, and requires a separate assessment.
Bank-specific KYC questions to ask
Because no bank was specified, the exact document package, certification standard and application channel cannot be stated universally. Before you upload or courier anything, ask the institution:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Which account schemes are available to my status, and which one matches the purpose I described?
- What identity and overseas-address documents are accepted, and how recent must they be?
- Must copies be notarised, attested by an Indian mission, certified by a bank official or verified electronically?
- Is an in-person visit required, or is remote video or other verification available for overseas applicants?
- What PAN details are required, and does the bank need evidence that an inoperative PAN has been made operative?
- Which FATCA/CRS self-certification form and tax-identification fields apply to my account?
- Are joint holders, nominees and powers of attorney handled through additional forms?
- What is the current funding method, minimum opening amount and expected processing sequence?
- How will the bank notify me if a document is rejected or a declaration is incomplete?
A practical account-opening sequence
- Read the selected bank’s current NRI checklist. Start with the institution’s own instructions, because RBI account categories do not specify every operational document or onboarding channel.
- Match the purpose to the scheme. Use the NRE, FCNR(B) and NRO descriptions above, then ask the bank to confirm your selection before completing forms.
- Assemble identity and residence evidence. Follow the bank’s stated file format, validity period and certification rule. Do not assume that a document accepted by one institution will be accepted by another.
- Verify PAN status. Record the PAN exactly as issued. If the bank flags an inoperative status, use the Income Tax Department’s dedicated procedure and provide the evidence that procedure requests.
- Complete FATCA/CRS self-certification. Enter tax-residence countries and identification numbers accurately, and ask the bank what to do if you have multiple tax residences or no foreign tax number.
- Submit and retain copies. Keep the submitted forms, document list, acknowledgement and any reference number. If the bank requests a correction, change only the field or document identified and resubmit through the stated channel.
- Fund and operate the account within its rules. Confirm accepted funding routes and transaction permissions before moving money. For NRO accounts in particular, permitted credits, debits and outward remittances are governed by RBI conditions.
NRO transaction rules: why the purpose matters
The RBI’s NRO Account Scheme is framed around bona fide rupee transactions. Its notification lists categories of permitted credits and debits, including local rupee payments and certain outward remittances subject to conditions. Those permissions are not a blanket approval for every transfer. A transaction may require supporting evidence, a declaration or compliance with a current limit.

If you expect to receive rent, sale proceeds, pension, dividends or other Indian receipts, describe the expected activity to the bank before opening the account and ask which credits are allowed. If you expect to remit money overseas, request the current conditions in writing. The RBI notification should be checked for subsequent amendments before relying on a specific threshold.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing an account from the name alone
“NRI account” is a broad label. NRE, FCNR(B) and NRO are different RBI schemes. Correct the mistake by stating the source of your funds, currency and expected Indian payments to the bank and requesting a scheme confirmation.
Using the PAN notice as a complete KYC list
The July 21, 2023 PAN notice addresses operability of an NRI’s PAN. It does not establish a universal bank-opening package. If the bank asks for additional KYC evidence, follow that bank’s current list.
Leaving tax-residency fields blank or guessing
FATCA/CRS self-certification is a compliance declaration. Guessing a country or tax number can create reporting problems. Pause the application and obtain a case-specific tax answer when your residence status is unclear.

Relying on an old checklist
Certification methods, remote-verification options and reporting forms can change. Use the current checklist issued by the selected institution and confirm any requirement that is not dated.
Assuming account opening settles tax filing
Opening a bank account and determining tax-return obligations are separate questions. The Income Tax Department’s foreign-asset and foreign-income guidance concerns particular filing situations and should not be treated as proof that an account holder has, or does not have, a filing obligation.
If you actually mean an investment or trading account
A bank deposit account is not necessarily the same as an account used to buy securities or other investments. The materials cited here establish RBI categories for NRE, FCNR(B) and NRO bank accounts; they do not establish the document, broker, demat, product or suitability requirements for every investment platform. Tell the investment provider which NRI bank account you hold and request its separate, current KYC and tax-residency checklist.
What to have ready on application day
- The account type you want and a one-sentence explanation of its intended use.
- Your citizenship, overseas residence and any PIO or OCI details relevant to eligibility.
- Your PAN number and, if applicable, evidence requested for an inoperative PAN process.
- The tax-residence countries and taxpayer-identification numbers required by the bank’s FATCA/CRS declaration.
- Identity and address documents in the exact certification and file format the bank accepts.
- Questions about joint holders, nominees, verification method, funding and transaction permissions.
- A record of the bank’s current checklist and the application acknowledgement.
The safest approach is to treat the RBI material as the framework for choosing among NRE, FCNR(B) and NRO, then treat the chosen bank’s live instructions as the authority for documents and onboarding. PAN status and FATCA/CRS declarations support tax identification and reporting compliance, but neither replaces account-specific KYC nor answers your separate tax-filing obligations.
