The guardian does not have to be the only person funding it: relatives and friends may gift contributions to the minor’s account. Contributions can be made through a registered Point of Presence (PoP), online PoP facilities, eNPS or another electronic method approved by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
The current PFRDA rules distinguish the amount needed to open the account, the minimum for a later payment, and the minimum that must be contributed during each financial year. They also do not state a maximum contribution limit. The detailed rules below use PFRDA’s current scheme page and the 2025 Scheme Guidelines, rather than older summaries that used a different opening figure.

Current NPS Vatsalya contribution rules at a glance
PFRDA’s current scheme page and its 2025 Scheme Guidelines set out these contribution requirements:
Recommended Free Tools
| Contribution point | Minimum amount | Maximum or limit stated by PFRDA | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| When the account is opened | ₹250 | No upper limit is stated | The opening contribution must meet this floor. |
| Each subsequent contribution | ₹10 | No upper limit is stated | A later payment can be as little as this amount, subject to the annual minimum. |
| During each financial year | ₹250 | No upper limit is stated | The account must receive at least this total in every financial year. |
The current PFRDA NPS Vatsalya scheme page lists all three operational figures: the opening floor, the minimum for a later contribution and the annual minimum. The NPS Vatsalya Scheme Guidelines 2025 independently specify the opening and annual minimums and do not set a maximum contribution ceiling.

How to interpret each minimum
Opening the account
The first contribution must satisfy the opening minimum shown in the table. This is the amount required when a parent or legal guardian establishes an NPS Vatsalya account for a minor. The contribution is credited to an account in the minor’s name; it is not a separate account owned by the adult who makes the payment.
If the account is opened close to the end of a financial year, the opening payment also counts toward that year’s contribution total. The annual rule still applies to the account for every financial year, so the guardian should check the total credited during the year rather than assuming that an account opened once remains compliant without further funding.
Later contributions
PFRDA’s current scheme page allows a subsequent contribution below the opening amount, with the later-payment floor shown above. “Subsequent” means a payment made after the account-opening contribution; it does not change the separate requirement that the account receive the annual minimum in each financial year.
This distinction matters when a family makes several small deposits. Each individual deposit must meet the minimum for a later contribution, while the combined deposits for the financial year must reach the annual floor. A series of payments that are individually valid can still fall short of the annual requirement if their total is too low.
Annual minimum
The annual minimum is measured for each financial year. It is a continuing funding condition, not a one-time account-opening charge. A guardian can meet it with one payment or with multiple eligible payments, provided the credited total reaches the required floor before the financial year closes.

When planning irregular gifts, check the contribution ledger or transaction confirmations supplied by the chosen PoP or eNPS channel. The relevant measure is the amount successfully credited to the NPS Vatsalya account, not merely an instruction that was submitted or a transfer that later failed.
No maximum contribution is stated
Neither the current scheme page nor the 2025 guidelines specifies an upper contribution limit. That means readers should not assume that a cap such as ₹1 lakh, ₹5 lakh or any other figure applies under the NPS Vatsalya contribution rule. A payment channel may still apply its own transaction, verification or processing controls, so use the channel’s instructions for a large payment and retain its confirmation.
“No maximum stated” is the precise position supported by PFRDA’s published material. It should not be expanded into a promise that every payment of any size will be accepted instantly or that other account, tax or regulatory rules never apply.
Who can contribute to an NPS Vatsalya account?
The parent or legal guardian
The minor is both the subscriber and the beneficiary. A parent or legal guardian opens and operates the account while the child is a minor. The adult therefore handles the account-opening process, submits contribution instructions and deals with the PoP or online service, but the account is recorded in the minor’s name.
The operating role and the funding role are related but not identical. A guardian may contribute personally, yet the rules do not require the guardian to be the source of every deposit. The account remains the minor’s NPS Vatsalya account regardless of which eligible person supplies a gift.

Relatives and friends
PFRDA expressly permits relatives and friends to gift contributions to the subscriber. The 2025 guidelines state: “In addition to Parents/guardians, relatives and friends may also gift contributions to subscriber by remitting the contributions to the NPS Vatsalya account.” The gift is paid into the minor’s account; the relative or friend does not become the account operator merely by making a contribution.

The guardian should maintain a record of who funded a gift and when it was credited, especially where multiple deposits are made during the same financial year. PFRDA’s contribution rule establishes eligibility to gift; it does not say that every donor can change account details or make decisions reserved for the guardian.
NRIs and OCIs
PFRDA’s scheme information includes eligible non-resident Indians (NRIs) and overseas citizens of India (OCIs). The scheme page says a separate form applies where the guardian is an NRI or OCI, and an NRE or NRO bank account is mandatory in that situation. Confirm the applicable form and banking requirement with the registered PoP or eNPS process before submitting the account-opening request.
This NRI/OCI condition concerns the guardian and the account-opening documentation. It does not convert the minor into the account operator; the minor remains the subscriber and beneficiary under the scheme structure.
Where and how contributions can be paid
PFRDA identifies several payment routes. Availability of a particular route depends on the registered PoP or electronic service handling the transaction.

- Choose a registered channel. Use a registered Point of Presence, an online PoP facility, eNPS or another electronic mode approved by PFRDA. Start with the channel that can identify the minor’s NPS Vatsalya account and the guardian operating it.
- Confirm the contribution type. Tell the channel whether the payment is the account-opening contribution or a later contribution. Check the amount against the applicable minimum and check the year-to-date total against the annual minimum.
- Submit the minor and guardian details requested. The guardian is responsible for operating the account. Where the guardian is an NRI or OCI, use the separate form and the required NRE or NRO bank account arrangement described by PFRDA.
- Make the payment through the selected route. At a physical PoP, PFRDA allows cheque or cash with a contribution slip. Online PoP facilities and eNPS provide electronic submission, while other electronic methods may be used only when approved by PFRDA.
- Keep the transaction confirmation. Retain the receipt, acknowledgement or electronic confirmation issued by the channel. Use it to verify that the contribution was credited to the correct minor’s account and to track the financial-year total.
Physical PoP payment
A physical PoP accepts a cheque or cash payment accompanied by a contribution slip. Complete the slip using the account information supplied by the guardian’s NPS Vatsalya registration and check the amount before handing it over. Ask for the PoP’s acknowledgement so the guardian can reconcile the payment with the account statement.
Online PoP and eNPS
Online PoP facilities and eNPS allow the guardian to submit a contribution electronically. The exact screens and authentication steps can differ between providers, so follow the live instructions shown after selecting NPS Vatsalya. Before confirming, verify the minor’s account identifier, the contributor details and the amount; an electronic payment sent to the wrong account may require a separate correction process.
Other approved electronic modes
PFRDA also allows other electronic modes that it has approved. Do not treat every payment app, bank transfer option or third-party link as automatically valid for NPS Vatsalya. Use a method identified by the registered channel or PFRDA as approved, and keep the confirmation generated after the payment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some pages still mention a ₹1,000 minimum
Older PFRDA FAQ and government-summary material reported ₹1,000 as the minimum contribution. That wording conflicts with the later 2025 Scheme Guidelines and the current PFRDA scheme page, which use the lower opening and annual figure shown in the table and add a separate minimum for later payments.
For current guidance, give precedence to the newer scheme rules. PFRDA’s press release dated 9 January 2026, “PFRDA issues NPS Vatsalya Scheme Guidelines 2025,” summarizes the guideline position as the current opening and annual minimum. If a bank, PoP or webpage still displays the older figure, ask it to confirm that its form reflects the 2025 guidelines before paying.

Practical contribution scenarios
One payment at account opening
A guardian may make a single opening payment that meets the opening floor. If that payment is credited during the current financial year, it contributes to that year’s total. The guardian should still monitor the account because the annual minimum is a recurring requirement for each financial year, not a permanent waiver created by the first deposit.
Several small deposits
A family can divide funding among several later payments. Each later payment must meet the later-payment minimum, and the sum of all credited payments in the financial year must reach the annual minimum. Relatives and friends can each make gifts, but the guardian should coordinate the deposits so that the account’s annual total is not overlooked.
A larger gift
Because PFRDA does not state a maximum, a relative or friend is not required to split a gift merely to stay below an NPS Vatsalya contribution cap. The donor should nevertheless use the registered channel’s instructions for a large transaction, provide the correct account details and retain evidence of the amount credited.
Opening near a year-end
When an account is opened shortly before the financial year ends, allow time for a cheque, cash deposit or electronic transfer to be processed and credited. A payment initiated before year-end but credited later may be recorded in the later period; the channel’s transaction record determines how it is posted. The guardian should check the credited date and, if necessary, ask the PoP how to complete the annual minimum.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the old ₹1,000 figure: Check the current PFRDA scheme page and 2025 guidelines instead of relying on an undated FAQ or summary.
- Confusing the opening and later-payment minimums: Apply the opening rule to the first contribution and the later-payment rule to each subsequent contribution.
- Ignoring the annual total: Add all credited deposits for the financial year; several small payments do not remove the annual requirement.
- Assuming the donor operates the account: A relative or friend may gift money, but the parent or legal guardian operates the minor’s account.
- Using an unapproved payment route: Pay through a registered PoP, online PoP, eNPS or another electronic mode approved by PFRDA.
- Entering the wrong account details: Match the minor’s account identifier and guardian information before confirming a physical or electronic payment.
- Missing NRI/OCI documentation: Where the guardian is an NRI or OCI, obtain the separate form and use the required NRE or NRO bank account arrangement.
