Tier I is the regulated pension account: partial withdrawals are limited by tenure, purpose, amount and frequency, while full exit follows corpus thresholds and annuity rules. Tier II is optional and, under the PFRDA All Citizen Model guidance, can generally be withdrawn at any time.
Keep your PAN, address, mobile number, email, nomination and bank details current before requesting a withdrawal. The exact threshold, form and approving office can differ between the All Citizen, Corporate, government and other NPS sectors. The explanations below identify the model whenever a rule is model-specific and are based on official pages accessed on 13 October 2026.

NPS account rules at a glance
| Question | Practical answer | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| How can I contribute? | PoP counter with a contribution slip, online through an NPS pension account, PoP facility or eNPS, the NPS Mobile App, or D-Remit using a PRAN-linked virtual ID, UPI or QR code. | PFRDA’s no-upper-limit statement and this channel list are for the All Citizen Model. |
| Which account is locked? | Tier I withdrawals follow exit and withdrawal rules. Tier II is optional and withdrawable at any time under the cited All Citizen guidance. | Tier II requires an active Tier I account. |
| Can I take money while staying invested? | Yes, a qualifying Tier I partial withdrawal may be available after three years, subject to purpose, amount and frequency limits. | Conditions and permitted purposes must be checked for your model. |
| When is full withdrawal possible? | The Protean CRA FAQ describes complete withdrawal at superannuation or age 60 when the corpus is no more than ₹5 lakh, and on premature exit when it is no more than ₹2.5 lakh. | These are changeable rules in that FAQ, not a universal promise for every NPS sector. |
PFRDA’s All Citizen Model page says a subscriber can make unlimited contributions to Tier I or Tier II with no upper limit on the amount. That describes how much you may deposit, not how much you can withdraw or the tax treatment of a contribution.

How can I contribute to NPS?
Use a Point of Presence
At a registered PoP, complete the contribution slip and submit it with a cheque or cash, following that PoP’s accepted payment procedure. Ask for an acknowledgement and retain it until the contribution appears in your CRA transaction history.
#1 Best Overall
Pay online
The All Citizen Model guidance lists an NPS pension account, a PoP’s online facility and the eNPS platform as online routes. Sign in through the service connected to your PRAN, choose Tier I or Tier II, enter the amount, select the displayed payment method and save the confirmation. The exact screens can vary by CRA and service channel.
Use the mobile app or D-Remit
The NPS Mobile App is another listed route. D-Remit allows a PRAN-linked virtual ID to receive funds through UPI or a QR code. Verify the virtual ID and PRAN before sending money; an error in those identifiers can delay allocation or require a correction request.
How the contribution is invested
Contributions are invested according to the pension fund and asset allocation recorded with the CRA. A payment therefore does not sit as an unallocated cash balance indefinitely; it is applied under the investment instructions attached to your account. Review the transaction and unit-allocation information in your CRA record after the contribution is processed.
What is the difference between Tier I and Tier II?
| Feature | Tier I | Tier II |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Default individual pension account. | Optional investment account. |
| Opening requirement | Base account for an individual subscriber. | Requires an active Tier I account. |
| Access to money | Withdrawals and exit are controlled by PFRDA rules, including purpose and tenure conditions for partial withdrawals. | Withdrawable at any time under the cited All Citizen Model guidance. |
| Tax qualification | Not addressed by the cited contribution page; check the current tax rules that apply to you. | The cited PFRDA page says Tier II does not qualify for tax benefits. |
| NRI/OCI point | An NRI or OCI may hold Tier I subject to applicable onboarding rules. | The cited guidance says NRIs and OCIs with Tier I accounts cannot activate Tier II. |
Do not assume that a Tier II withdrawal rule lets you bypass Tier I exit restrictions. They are separate accounts, and the CRA transaction must identify the tier from which you are requesting money.

How can a Subscriber change NPS account details?
The route depends on the field being changed and your NPS sector. Protean CRA’s service FAQ identifies both online updates and forms submitted through a PoP or Nodal Office.
| Detail or service | Route described by the CRA material | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Correspondence or permanent address | Online through the CRA using Aadhaar OTP authentication. | The Aadhaar identity and OTP must match the record used for authentication. |
| Mobile number or email | Update in the CRA system with your I-PIN. | Test the new contact details so OTPs and notices can reach you. |
| Personal or nomination information | Submit Form UOSS2 through the applicable POP-SP; the form also covers certain PRAN or PIN-card services. | Ask the POP whether your sector uses this form for the particular field. |
| Photograph or signature | Form S7 through the applicable service channel. | Follow the current format and identification requirements of the POP. |
| Exit-related address, contact, bank or nomination correction | Online through CRA login where available, or physical Form S2 through the associated Nodal Office or POP. | Complete the update before starting the withdrawal request. |
Nominees
The service FAQ says you may register up to three nominees. A minor can be nominated when the guardian’s details and the minor’s date of birth are provided. Review the percentage allocation and relationship details shown in the CRA record after saving the nomination.
Why updating first matters
The exit guidance instructs subscribers to ensure PAN, address, contact, bank and nomination details are registered before initiating withdrawal. A mismatch can stop authentication, delay Nodal Office or POP authorization, or send a request back for correction. Make the change, wait for confirmation in the CRA record and only then begin the exit workflow.

Can I withdraw some amount during my tenure in NPS and still continue to subscribe?
A partial Tier I withdrawal can be available, but it is not a general-purpose cash facility. The Protean CRA withdrawal FAQ describes the following conditions:
Rank #3
- At least three years of NPS membership before the request.
- Up to 25% of your own contributions, rather than 25% of the entire corpus including other components.
- No more than three partial withdrawals during the subscription.
- A purpose specifically permitted by the applicable rules.
Examples of permitted purposes
The cited FAQ includes a child’s higher education or marriage, purchase or construction of a residential house in specified circumstances, and treatment of critical illnesses. The list is conditional; a routine expense, debt repayment or any other need is not automatically eligible. Read the purpose wording in the current CRA form and gather the supporting evidence before applying.
How to request a partial withdrawal
- Sign in to the CRA and select the partial-withdrawal service, if online initiation is enabled for your account.
- Choose the purpose and enter the amount. The system should enforce the contribution and frequency limits, but verify the figures yourself.
- Complete the required authentication and upload or provide the requested evidence.
- If online initiation is unavailable, complete physical Form 601-PW and submit it with supporting documents to your POP. The POP initiates and authorizes the CRA request.
- Keep the acknowledgement and monitor the request status in the CRA.
The PFRDA Corporate Model FAQ also describes a three-year wait, a 25% own-contribution ceiling and a maximum of three withdrawals, but it presents its permitted purposes separately. Do not use the All Citizen purpose list as a substitute for the Corporate Model rules.
When can I make a full withdrawal or exit?
Exit eligibility depends on whether the event is normal superannuation or age 60, or a premature exit, and on the subscriber’s model. The Protean CRA withdrawal FAQ gives these thresholds:
| Exit situation | Corpus condition in the cited FAQ | If the corpus is above the threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Superannuation or age 60 | Complete withdrawal when the corpus is no more than ₹5 lakh. | At least 40% must be used to purchase an annuity; the balance may be paid as a lump sum. |
| Premature exit | Complete withdrawal when the corpus is no more than ₹2.5 lakh, with a five-year minimum before exit. | At least 80% must be used to purchase an annuity; the balance may be paid as a lump sum. |
The ₹5 lakh, ₹2.5 lakh, five-year, 40% and 80% figures are rule thresholds reported by the cited live FAQ, not investment projections or guarantees. Rules can be amended, and the PFRDA Corporate Model FAQ frames timing and eligibility differently. Confirm the current result shown for your PRAN and sector before submitting an irreversible request.
Rank #4
Normal versus premature exit
Normal exit is tied to the applicable superannuation or age-60 event. Premature exit is a voluntary departure before that point and, under the cited CRA FAQ, cannot be treated as an immediate complete withdrawal unless its conditions are met. Selecting the wrong exit type can change the annuity percentage and documents required, so read the event description in the CRA request carefully.
How do I initiate the withdrawal request in CRA system?
Online route
- Log in to your CRA account and open the withdrawal or exit request service.
- Confirm the exit type, personal information, bank account and nominee details displayed on screen.
- Where annuitization applies, select the available Annuity Service Provider and annuity scheme options shown by the system.
- Enter the requested lump-sum and annuity information, then authenticate with OTP-based digital signing or eSign.
- The associated Nodal Office or POP verifies and authorizes the request. Track the status through the CRA’s status-view facility.
Physical route
If online initiation or authentication is unavailable, submit the applicable physical withdrawal form through the associated Nodal Office or POP. The CRA withdrawal FAQ lists the PRAN card, KYC documents, bank proof such as a cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and other applicable forms among the documents that may be required for superannuation or premature exit. The office can tell you which originals, copies or attestations are required for your sector.
How the money is paid
The CRA withdrawal FAQ says proceeds are credited electronically to the subscriber’s or claimant’s bank account using the details supplied with the request. That is why a closed, dormant or mismatched account can delay payment. Do not rely on a bank detail that is merely printed on an old statement; verify the account shown in the CRA record before authentication.
What should I compare before choosing an exit?
- Tier: confirm whether the money is in Tier I or Tier II; Tier II access does not remove Tier I exit conditions.
- Event: identify normal superannuation or age 60 versus premature exit.
- Model: establish whether the PRAN is under the All Citizen, Corporate, government or another sector-specific framework.
- Corpus: compare the current value with the applicable complete-withdrawal threshold displayed under the current rules.
- Income trade-off: where annuitization applies, compare the required annuity allocation with the lump sum available from the balance.
- Data readiness: confirm identity, address, contact, nomination and bank records before starting.
- Annuity choice: review the available provider and scheme choices in the exit flow rather than assuming every option is offered to every subscriber.
Common problems and practical fixes
The contribution is not visible
Keep the PoP receipt or online transaction reference, check that the PRAN and tier were entered correctly, and review the CRA transaction history after the normal processing interval stated by the channel. If the payment was sent through D-Remit, recheck the virtual ID and payment reference before raising a service request.

The online update fails
For an address change, confirm Aadhaar OTP authentication. For a mobile or email change, sign in with the I-PIN and use the CRA’s profile service. If the field is not offered online, use the applicable UOSS2, S7 or S2 route through the POP or Nodal Office instead of repeatedly submitting an unsupported online request.
The exit request is rejected or returned
Read the reason in the status view, then correct the specific issue: incomplete KYC, an invalid bank proof, an unregistered nominee, a mismatch in identity details or missing authorization. Update the underlying record first and resubmit only through the route prescribed for your sector.
You are unsure whether a purpose qualifies
Do not classify an ordinary cash need as an eligible partial withdrawal. Compare the purpose with the current CRA or sector-specific form and ask the POP for the required evidence before filing. The three-year, 25% and three-withdrawal limits do not by themselves make a request eligible.

Thresholds and procedures are administrative rules that can change. Check the current CRA withdrawal and service pages, the PFRDA guidance for your subscriber model, and the instructions in your logged-in account. If the page and your account display different requirements, use the account-specific instruction and obtain clarification from the associated POP or Nodal Office before signing an exit request.
