Staking APY is usually a token-denominated estimate, not a guaranteed increase in purchasing power. It tells you how many additional units of a network’s native token you may earn over a year if the quoted rate, validator performance, fees and compounding assumptions hold. A meaningful “real yield” calculation must then account for token-supply inflation, staking costs, penalties, liquidity and the token’s price in your reporting currency.
For a one-period supply-adjusted estimate, use (1 + net staking rate) / (1 + token inflation) - 1. That result measures your change in share of the token supply. A dollar or euro return is a separate calculation that also includes the token-price change.

What a staking APY actually measures
Nominal staking APY is an annualized estimate of additional native tokens credited to a staker. If an account starts with 100 tokens and the quoted APY is 6%, the simple interpretation is about six extra tokens over a year. The estimate is expressed in token units; it does not promise that the tokens will buy more goods, more dollars or more euros.
Annualization can conceal important assumptions. A protocol may quote an annual rate from rewards earned in recent epochs, assume that rewards are automatically restaked, or display a provider’s rate after its commission. Two offers both labeled “APY” can therefore represent different quantities.

APR and APY are not interchangeable
| Term | What it expresses | Compounding assumption |
|---|---|---|
| APR | A simple annualized rate based on periodic rewards. | Usually no compounding in the quoted figure. |
| APY | An annualized rate that includes the effect of reinvesting rewards. | Compounding frequency must be known; the displayed APY may assume automatic restaking. |
When a protocol publishes an APR and rewards compound m times per year, the mathematical equivalent is APY = (1 + APR/m)m - 1. Real results differ if rewards are not restaked, if restaking has a fee, or if the rate changes between periods. Never convert an APR without checking how often rewards are credited and whether the account actually compounds them.
Why the number changes
Staking rates are generally forecasts based on current network conditions, not contractual coupons. Ethereum’s reward calculation uses a validator’s effective balance and the square root of total active balance. As the Ethereum Foundation explains, “The more validators, the greater the overall issuance (as sqrt(N)) but the smaller the base_reward per validator (as 1/sqrt(N)).” A change in the amount staked can therefore change both network issuance and each validator’s reward.
Solana states that staking yield is annualized and varies each epoch as inflation, total active stake, validator uptime and commission change. Its staking documentation describes an epoch as approximately two days. A displayed APY can move after every epoch even when you leave the same tokens delegated.

A protocol-level rate describes rewards generated by the network before a particular provider’s charges. Your net rate can be lower because of validator commission, platform fees, restaking costs, missed duties, slashing or a spread between the provider’s quoted and realized rate. A liquid-staking token can also trade above or below the value of the underlying stake. Treat a dashboard’s protocol APY and a provider’s customer APY as separate measurements.
Three different meanings of “real yield”
“Real yield” has no universal definition in crypto. State which purchasing-power or supply concept you are using before comparing rates.
| Definition | Question answered | Typical calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Supply-share real yield | Did my staked balance grow faster than the total token supply? | (1 + net staking rate) / (1 + token inflation) - 1 |
| Token purchasing-power yield | Did each token retain value relative to goods or another asset? | Requires a token-price or purchasing-power index; staking alone does not determine it. |
| Fiat return | Did my position gain or lose dollars, euros or another reporting currency? | (1 + net token return) × (1 + token-price change) - 1 |
Supply-share real yield
If your staking rate matches total token-supply growth, your token balance rises but your fractional ownership of the network is approximately unchanged. If staking grows more slowly than supply, your share is diluted. If it grows faster, your share increases.

Solana’s more precise term is “Adjusted Staking Yield”: the change in fractional token-supply ownership of staked tokens caused by inflation issuance. This is why simply subtracting inflation from APY is only a shortcut. The ratio formula captures compounding and makes clear which supply-growth denominator you used.

A higher share of supply does not prove that one token buys more. Network demand, utility, liquidity and market conditions determine the token’s exchange value. A staker can achieve a positive supply-share result while the token falls against consumer prices, or experience a negative supply-share result while a token-price rally produces a positive real-world gain.
Fiat return
For a fiat investor, combine the net token return with the token-price move during the same measurement period. If staking adds 5% in tokens and the token price falls 30% against your currency, the combined return is 1.05 × 0.70 - 1 = -26.5%, before taxes and transaction costs. Conversely, a weak staking rate can accompany a positive fiat return if the token appreciates.
How to calculate a supply-adjusted staking return
- Record the observation date. Save the protocol or provider quote, the epoch or period it covers, and whether it is APR or APY. Rates are volatile; an undated number cannot be reproduced reliably.
- Identify the inflation denominator. Use protocol token issuance or, where available, the change in total supply for the same period. A quoted long-term target is not necessarily the current inflation rate.
- Convert the quote to a comparable annual rate. Do not mix an uncompounded APR with a compounded APY. If you are not restaking, use the periodic token return you actually receive rather than the provider’s compounded headline.
- Remove costs and expected losses. Subtract validator commission, platform charges and restaking costs. Model downtime and any expected penalties. A fee charged on rewards is not the same as a fee charged on principal.
- Apply the ratio formula. Calculate
(1 + net staking rate) / (1 + inflation rate) - 1. Label the result as a supply-share estimate, not a dollar return. - Add market performance separately. For a fiat result, multiply by the token-price factor:
(1 + net token return) × (1 + price change) - 1.
Worked example: a 2.5% quoted rate
Assume a protocol dashboard shows a 2.5% annual rate and the relevant token-supply growth is 1.5%. If there are no fees or penalties, the supply-adjusted result is 1.025 / 1.015 - 1 = 0.985%, or approximately 0.99%. The token balance rises 2.5%, but the staker’s share of supply rises by less than 1%.
If a provider keeps 10% of rewards, the net token rate under a reward-only fee assumption is 1.025 × 0.90 - 1 = -7.75%? No: calculate the fee on the reward correctly: the 2.5% gross reward becomes 2.25%, so the net rate is 2.25%. The supply-adjusted result is then 1.0225 / 1.015 - 1 ≈ 0.74%. Showing the intermediate step prevents a fee from being mistakenly applied to the entire principal.

Worked example: a high rate with faster inflation
Suppose a staking interface displays a hypothetical 6.5% APY while the token’s measured supply growth for the same period is 8%. Before fees, 1.065 / 1.08 - 1 ≈ -1.39%. The staker receives more tokens, yet owns a slightly smaller fraction of the total supply. This is not a forecast for any particular network; it demonstrates why the inflation denominator matters.

Measuring changing epoch rates
Do not average APYs by simply adding them and dividing by the number of epochs when balances compound. For periodic rates r1, r2, …, rn, the realized compounded return is (1+r1)(1+r2)…(1+rn) - 1. Keep a record of beginning balance, rewards credited, fees, penalties and ending balance for each epoch. If you only have annualized snapshots, treat the result as an approximation and retain the dates.
How Ethereum staking creates and changes rewards
Ethereum validator rewards include consensus duties and can be reduced by downtime or slashing. The reward formula depends on effective balance and the square root of total active balance, so network participation affects the base reward. More total stake increases aggregate issuance but generally lowers the base reward per validator.
Issuance is not the same as net supply growth
Ethereum also burns some transaction fees. Its issuance explainer gives an illustrative example in which an average gas price of 16 gwei could burn enough ETH to offset about 1,700 ETH issued to validators per day, producing net issuance around zero or below for that day. That is a scenario, not a permanent rate: gas usage, fee levels and issuance change. For supply-share analysis, use the issuance or total-supply measure that matches your chosen period rather than assuming validator rewards equal net supply growth.
Current dashboard figures are snapshots
The Ethereum Foundation staking page snapshot crawled on October 16, 2026 showed 43,948,738 ETH staked, about 35% of ETH supply, and a 2.5% current APR. These are dated, volatile dashboard values, not guaranteed future returns. The displayed figure can change as total active balance, validator performance, issuance and fee burn change.
Choosing an Ethereum staking route
| Route | Basic requirement | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Solo validator | 32 ETH plus suitable hardware, reliable connectivity and validator operations. | Direct control and no intermediary commission, but you carry uptime, key-management and slashing responsibilities. |
| Pooled staking | Usually less than 32 ETH; the exact minimum depends on the pool. | Lower hardware burden, with pool fees, counterparty or smart-contract risk and less direct control. |
| Liquid staking | Deposit through a liquid-staking system and receive a representative token. | Potentially easier liquidity, but adds smart-contract, custody, market-price and redemption risks. |
Ethereum documentation warns that opaque centralized products may prevent independent verification of what is actually staked. A headline rate is not enough: check whether the provider identifies validators, explains fees, describes withdrawal conditions and shows how rewards are calculated.
How Solana staking creates and changes rewards
Solana distributes staking rewards each epoch, approximately every two days according to its staking page. The annualized yield changes as inflation and total active stake change. Delegator results also depend on validator uptime and commission.

Inflation schedule and terminology
Solana’s current staking documentation describes an initial inflation rate of 8%, a 15% year-over-year disinflation rate and a 1.5% long-term inflation rate. These are parameters of the inflation schedule, not a promise that every epoch or calendar year will display one fixed staking APY. Use the rate applicable to the measurement date and state whether you are using issuance, total-supply growth or an adjusted staking-yield measure.
Validator performance and commission
Solana’s delegation criteria state that rewards are proportional to epoch vote credits. Validator commission is the percentage of rewards deposited into the validator’s vote account, so two validators with identical nominal network conditions can deliver different delegator returns. Check recent vote performance, commission changes and the validator’s operating history before treating a quoted APY as your expected result.

The European Banking Authority and European Securities and Markets Authority reported historical staking figures in a 2025 joint report, measured as of October 2024. The report found average protocol-level self-staking APY of about 3.46% for Ethereum and 6.73% for Solana. Provider end-user ranges were 2.29%–5.09% for Ethereum and 5.94%–7.74% for Solana.
| Measure (October 2024 observation) | Ethereum | Solana |
|---|---|---|
| Average protocol-level self-staking APY | About 3.46% | About 6.73% |
| Provider end-user range | 2.29%–5.09% | 5.94%–7.74% |
These figures are useful for seeing the gap between protocol rewards and customer outcomes, but they are not current quotes or forecasts. They also do not by themselves reveal token inflation, price changes, validator risk, lockups or the fees included in each provider’s rate.
A complete framework for comparing staking offers
Evaluate each offer across the same dimensions instead of ranking headline APYs.
| Dimension | What to verify | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Rate basis | APR or APY, compounding frequency, observation period and whether the number is estimated or realized. | A compounded estimate can look higher than the cash-like periodic reward you actually receive. |
| Inflation basis | Protocol issuance, total-supply change or fractional-supply ownership; same dates as the staking rate. | Different denominators produce different “real” rates. |
| Net rate | Validator commission, platform fees, withdrawal charges, restaking costs and expected penalties. | Costs reduce the tokens that remain yours. |
| Operational risk | Uptime, vote performance, key security, slashing rules and smart-contract audits or controls. | Missed duties or a penalty can erase months of rewards. |
| Liquidity | Unbonding period, withdrawal queue, redemption mechanics and liquid-token market depth. | You may not be able to sell or transfer at the displayed value when needed. |
| Market risk | Token-price volatility and your tax or reporting currency. | Price movement often dominates the token reward. |
| Date and scope | Protocol-level versus provider quote, geographic availability, account type and measurement date. | A rate available to one user or region may not apply to you. |
Step-by-step due diligence before delegating
- Define the outcome you want. Decide whether you are measuring more tokens, a larger share of supply, or a return in dollars or euros. Write the target currency and period in your worksheet.
- Capture the exact quote. Record the displayed APR or APY, timestamp, protocol, validator or pool, minimum balance, compounding method and any “up to” wording.
- Read the reward formula. Confirm how often rewards are credited, whether they are automatically restaked, and how the provider handles missed duties or penalties.
- Calculate the net token rate. Apply commission and platform charges to the reward basis they actually use. Include a conservative allowance for downtime rather than assuming perfect performance.
- Choose an inflation measure. Use a same-period issuance or supply-growth figure. If the protocol publishes an adjusted staking-yield metric, identify its denominator and use it consistently.
- Run three scenarios. Calculate a supply-share case, a flat-price fiat case and a downside price case. Show the assumptions beside each result.
- Check access to the stake. Note the unbonding period, possible withdrawal queue, liquid-token redemption process and fees. A higher rate may not compensate for a liquidity need.
- Set monitoring rules. Review validator commission, uptime, vote credits, protocol parameters and your realized rewards at each epoch or at a fixed monthly interval.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Subtracting inflation from APY without labeling the shortcut
The shortcut APY - inflation can be close for small rates, but it ignores compounding and may use the wrong supply denominator. Use the ratio formula and label the result as an approximation when the inflation data is incomplete.

Treating an annualized snapshot as a promise
An epoch’s reward extrapolated to a year is not a locked yield. Save the date and recalculate when network stake, inflation, validator performance or commission changes.
Comparing protocol APY with a provider’s net APY
One figure may be before fees and the other after fees. Put both on the same basis, then disclose commission, custody, platform and transaction charges.
Ignoring supply burn or other offsetting mechanisms
Validator issuance is not always equal to net token-supply growth. On networks with burns, use the net supply change relevant to your definition of real yield and period.
Assuming a liquid token is always redeemable at par
Liquid staking can add an exit route, but its representative token can trade at a discount, and redemptions can be delayed. Include that spread and timing risk in a fiat calculation.
Confusing a positive token return with a positive investment return
Receiving more tokens says nothing about their price in your currency. Keep token, supply-share and fiat results in separate columns.
How to report your result clearly
A reproducible staking calculation should show:
- Protocol, validator or provider and account type.
- Observation date, epoch or measurement interval.
- APR or APY basis and compounding assumption.
- Gross reward, each fee, and any modeled downtime or penalty.
- Inflation or total-supply measure and its denominator.
- Supply-share result using
(1 + net rate)/(1 + inflation) - 1. - Token-price assumption and separate fiat result, if relevant.
- Unbonding, withdrawal and liquidity constraints.
This presentation prevents a nominal token reward from being marketed or remembered as a guaranteed real return. It also lets you update the calculation when the next epoch changes the inputs.
