Neither is automatically cheaper or better. A ₹10 NFO unit is not a bargain by itself, and an ETF is not automatically liquid just because it is listed. Compare the underlying exposure, total costs, dealing method, liquidity, disclosure and implementation risks for the exact scheme.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) says a New Fund Offer (NFO) is the first subscription offering of a new mutual-fund scheme launched by an asset management company (AMC). NFOs commonly use ₹10 as the initial offer price during a fixed subscription period; after launch, investors transact at the scheme’s prevailing net asset value (NAV). An ETF, by contrast, trades like a common stock, with its market price changing as buy and sell orders meet on the exchange.

What an NFO and an ETF actually are
NFO: a scheme at the subscription stage
An NFO is available only during the dates stated in its offer documents. You submit an application, the AMC allots units, and the scheme then begins investing according to its stated mandate and benchmark. An open-ended scheme generally allows purchases and redemptions with the fund after launch at applicable NAV. A close-ended NFO may have a defined maturity or restrictions on when investors can exit, so the words “NFO” alone do not tell you how easy it will be to sell.

At launch, the fund has no operating performance history. You can assess the mandate, benchmark, proposed portfolio, expenses, risk factors and the AMC’s investment process, but you cannot assess its realized tracking record, turnover or tracking difference.

ETF: exchange-traded index exposure
An ETF holds a basket intended to track an index or other specified portfolio. You place an exchange order during trading hours through a broker, and the transaction occurs at a market price rather than at the end-of-day NAV used for a conventional mutual-fund purchase or redemption. NSE describes ETF trading as possible throughout the trading day, like stocks.
The quoted price can be above (a premium) or below (a discount) the ETF’s NAV. Authorized participants and market makers help create or redeem ETF units and keep the market price near NAV, but the quality of that support differs by fund. Listing therefore provides a trading facility, not a guarantee that a particular ETF will have tight spreads or enough buyers and sellers.
Why ₹10 does not make an NFO cheap
The ₹10 figure is a denomination convention, not a valuation measure. Suppose an NFO issues units at ₹10 and an ETF trades at ₹100. If both provide the same underlying exposure, investing ₹10,000 buys 1,000 NFO units or about 100 ETF units; the number of units says nothing about the proportion of the underlying assets you own. A later NAV of ₹12 does not mean the NFO became expensive, just as a ₹100 ETF is not expensive merely because its quoted number is larger.

Compare the portfolio and the costs that reduce returns: the mutual fund’s total expense ratio (TER), loads and transaction effects; or the ETF’s TER and tracking difference plus brokerage, exchange charges, taxes, demat costs and the bid-ask spread. Compare like with like—same benchmark, replication method, market exposure and currency—before drawing a conclusion from a nominal price.
Total cost: use an all-in calculation
| Cost element | NFO or open-ended mutual-fund route | ETF route |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | ₹10 is commonly used during the NFO window; subsequent dealings use prevailing NAV. | Intraday exchange price, which can differ from NAV. |
| Ongoing fund cost | Compare the scheme’s TER and the effect of portfolio transactions. | Compare TER and the observed tracking difference against the index. |
| Trading charges | Usually no exchange brokerage for a direct NAV transaction, but platform or transaction charges may apply. | Brokerage, exchange charges, statutory taxes and any platform charges apply to orders. |
| Account costs | A demat account is generally not required for ordinary mutual-fund units. | Demat and related account charges can reduce returns, especially for small or infrequent holdings. |
| Price friction | Units are bought or redeemed at applicable NAV; an exit load may apply. | The bid-ask spread and any premium or discount to NAV affect the execution price. |
| Exit restrictions | Check exit load, lock-in and whether the scheme is open-ended or close-ended. | Exchange trading is available only when the market is open and a counterparty is present. |
SEBI specifically cautions investors to account for brokerage and demat costs when evaluating ETFs. A low TER can be outweighed by repeated trading costs or a wide spread. Conversely, a mutual fund with a convenient automated contribution facility may be cheaper in practice for a small monthly investor than buying an ETF every month.
Tracking difference matters more than a headline TER
TER is the stated recurring expense. Tracking difference is the gap between the fund’s return and its benchmark over time after expenses, cash balances, rebalancing costs and other frictions. Review both for an established ETF or fund. For an NFO, there is no realized history, so treat any expected tracking estimate as a projection and examine how the AMC proposes to obtain and rebalance the securities.

Liquidity has two separate questions
Can you transact when you want?
An ETF can be bought or sold intraday, but only at prices available in the order book. Check the exact fund’s average traded value, order-book depth, bid-ask spread and the presence of market makers. A fund with a listing but little trading can take longer to execute and may require accepting a price materially away from NAV.
For an open-ended mutual fund, liquidity is provided by the fund’s purchase and redemption process. You submit a transaction under the scheme’s cut-off rules and receive the applicable NAV, subject to settlement timing, exit load or other stated conditions. This is a different form of liquidity: it is not intraday price discovery, but it avoids relying on another investor’s bid at the moment you want to exit.
Can the underlying assets be sold?
Liquidity also depends on the securities inside the portfolio. An ETF holding thinly traded shares or bonds may show a larger spread even if the ETF itself is listed. For an NFO, inspect the liquidity of the proposed holdings and how the AMC will handle subscriptions, redemptions and rebalancing. A close-ended NFO can restrict redemption until a specified date, so the exchange or maturity provisions must be read before investing.

Premiums and discounts to NAV
Before placing an ETF order, compare the live market price with the latest indicative or published NAV where available. A premium means you pay more than the underlying portfolio value; a discount means you pay less but may face a similar discount when selling. Use limit orders when the spread or premium/discount is material rather than assuming the last traded price is fair.
Portfolio transparency and the problem of a new fund
| Information point | NFO or conventional mutual fund | ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Before launch | Offer document states the mandate, benchmark, investment strategy, risks and proposed expenses; there is little or no operating history. | An existing ETF can have a trading and tracking record; a newly launched ETF may also lack history. |
| Routine portfolio disclosure | NSE’s comparison table lists monthly disclosure for open-ended and close-ended funds. | NSE lists daily or real-time portfolio disclosure for ETFs. |
| Price visibility | Transactions use the applicable NAV rather than an intraday quote. | Market price, bid, offer and traded volume are visible during exchange hours, but market price can diverge from NAV. |
Daily disclosure does not eliminate risk: it shows what the ETF reports, while execution still depends on spread, market depth and the quality of the underlying index. Monthly disclosure for a mutual fund is less frequent, but the NAV-based dealing process can be simpler for investors who do not need intraday control.

An NFO collects money before the portfolio is fully built. Review the benchmark and the securities eligible for purchase, the planned replication method, expected cash holdings, concentration limits and the proposed TER. Ask how quickly the AMC intends to invest and what happens if the target securities are temporarily illiquid or unavailable.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India’s 2025 Factbook records a SEBI requirement that an AMC deploy NFO money within 30 business days after allotment. That is a deployment deadline, not a promise that the portfolio will immediately match its benchmark or that returns will be positive. During the build-out period, cash and transaction costs can create a difference from the index.
Step-by-step checklist before choosing
- Define the exposure. Identify the exact benchmark, asset class, geography, currency and active or passive mandate. Reject comparisons between products that merely have similar names.
- Read the scheme documents. For an NFO, note subscription opening and closing dates, allotment process, benchmark, risk factors, proposed TER, exit load, lock-in, maturity and redemption provisions.
- Measure ongoing cost. Compare TER and, where a history exists, tracking difference. Treat an NFO’s cost as proposed until the final scheme disclosure is available.
- Price ETF execution. Check average traded value, current spread, typical premium or discount to NAV, order-book depth and market-maker arrangements. Use a limit order when conditions are not tight.
- Add every dealing charge. Include brokerage, exchange fees, taxes, demat charges and platform fees for an ETF. For a fund, include transaction effects and any exit load.
- Match the dealing method to your routine. Investors needing intraday orders may prefer an ETF. Investors making small, automated contributions or needing fractional units may find a conventional mutual-fund platform more practical.
- Check liquidity of the holdings. An ETF’s apparent liquidity can mask illiquid underlying securities; an NFO’s proposed portfolio may take time to assemble.
- Re-check current data. TERs, spreads, market-maker arrangements, offer dates and scheme documents change. Verify them immediately before investing rather than relying on an old comparison.
When each route may fit
An NFO may fit when
- Its mandate fills a genuine allocation gap and is not being selected merely because the unit price is ₹10.
- You are comfortable evaluating a strategy without a performance or tracking history.
- The subscription window, deployment timetable, exit rules and costs suit your holding period.
- You value NAV-based purchases, systematic contributions or investing without exchange execution.
An ETF may fit when
- You want intraday control and can monitor spreads, premiums or discounts and order-book liquidity.
- The ETF has a credible tracking record, transparent holdings and sufficient traded value for your order size.
- Your expected holding period and order frequency justify brokerage, demat and spread costs.
- You are comfortable using a demat and brokerage account and receiving whole-unit exposure where fractional investing is unavailable.
Market context and the limits of broad statistics
NSE reported average daily ETF value of ₹2,733 crore on 31 December 2025 and ETF assets under management of ₹10.94 lakh crore at the end of December 2025. These are market-wide figures, not evidence that every ETF is liquid. Evaluate the named fund’s own traded value and spread.
NSE records India’s first ETF listing on its exchange on 8 January 2002. The long history of the ETF structure does not remove scheme-specific risks, tracking variation or execution costs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
Choose the route that delivers the required exposure at the lowest realistic all-in cost for your trading pattern and risk tolerance. Ignore the ₹10 anchor. For an NFO, scrutinize the mandate, proposed expenses, deployment plan, lock-in and absence of history. For an ETF, verify actual volume, spread, premium or discount to NAV, market-maker support, tracking difference and every brokerage or demat charge. Liquidity and transparency are useful only when measured for the exact product you intend to buy.
