There is no defensible universal winner between Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) from the currently verified figures. Netflix is the more concentrated streaming business, while Disney combines streaming with Experiences, Sports and other entertainment operations. The better investment depends on the price you pay, your preferred exposure and how you assess each company’s cash generation, obligations and execution risks.
One important distinction comes first: investors buy shares in Netflix or Disney. Disney+ is a service inside Disney’s broader company, not a separately traded stock. The latest verified evidence is also on different dates: Netflix’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K and Disney’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 shareholder report. That makes a same-day valuation verdict impossible without refreshing both companies’ filings and market prices.

What you are actually comparing: NFLX and DIS
Buying Netflix stock gives you exposure primarily to a global subscription-streaming company. Netflix also reports advertising, consumer products, live experiences and related revenue, but its fiscal 2025 filing says those non-membership sources were not material components of revenue in 2023, 2024 or 2025.

Disney’s reported segments are Entertainment, Sports and Experiences. Disney+ sits within Entertainment alongside other streaming and content activities, while theme parks, cruises, resorts, consumer products and sports businesses can materially affect the parent company’s results. A strong quarter for Disney+ therefore does not automatically translate into a stronger stock if another segment is weakening, and a soft streaming quarter does not necessarily determine the entire investment case.

Put the reported results on the same timeline
The verified figures cover different reporting periods and use different accounting presentations. Netflix’s fiscal year ends in December. Disney’s fiscal year ends in late September, and the latest quarterly evidence available here is fiscal Q3 2026. Treating these numbers as if they were simultaneous annual results would create a misleading comparison.
| Company and period | Revenue | Growth | Profit measure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix, FY2025 | $45.183 billion | 16% year over year | Not included in the verified figures used here | Calendar-year results from Netflix’s 2026 Form 10-K |
| Disney, fiscal Q3 2026 | $25.248 billion | 7% year over year | $5.555 billion total segment operating income | Disney company measure; total segment operating income is non-GAAP |
| Disney, fiscal Q3 2026 Entertainment | SVOD revenue increased 11% | 11% SVOD revenue growth | 13% SVOD operating margin | One quarter; Disney said timing of marketing and programming spending contributed in part |
| Disney, FY2025 | $94.425 billion | Annual figure | $17.551 billion total segment operating income | Fiscal year ending September 27, 2025; total segment operating income is non-GAAP |
Disney’s fiscal Q3 2026 total segment operating income included $3.017 billion from Experiences, $1.680 billion from Entertainment and $858 million from Sports. Those figures show why Disney’s consolidated earnings cannot be read as a pure streaming result. They are company-defined segment measures and should not be compared directly with a Netflix GAAP operating-income figure without reconciling definitions.

Netflix: a concentrated streaming growth thesis
Revenue drivers
Netflix reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $45.183 billion, up 16% from 2024. Management attributed growth primarily to membership growth, price increases and increased advertising revenue, partly offset by foreign-exchange movements.
That mix matters for investors. Price increases can lift revenue without adding subscribers, but they can also increase cancellation risk. Membership growth expands the paying base, while advertising may add revenue per viewer without requiring every user to pay a higher subscription price. Foreign-exchange movements can obscure underlying demand when revenue is translated into U.S. dollars.
Netflix discontinued reporting membership numbers during 2025 and said it would emphasize revenue and operating margin instead. Investors must therefore rely less on a single subscriber headline and more on revenue growth, retention indicators when disclosed, average monetization, operating margin and cash generation.

Why concentration can help
- Most economic value is tied to one operating model, making the investment easier to analyze than a conglomerate with unrelated divisions.
- Strong content can be distributed globally across a large platform, allowing successful programming to reach more than one market.
- Price increases, advertising and new formats can raise monetization without requiring a separate theme-park or sports operation.
Why concentration can hurt
- Content spending, churn, regulation, competition and consumer tastes all have a relatively direct effect on the core business.
- A programming miss or weaker engagement cannot be offset by a cruise line, park attendance or sports rights business.
- Because Netflix no longer reports membership totals as its primary headline metric, outside investors have less direct visibility into subscriber trends than in prior years.
Disney: a diversified company with a growing streaming component
Recent operating results
Disney reported fiscal Q3 2026 revenue of $25.248 billion, up 7% year over year. Total segment operating income rose 21% to $5.555 billion, a non-GAAP company measure. Experiences supplied $3.017 billion of that amount, Entertainment supplied $1.680 billion and Sports supplied $858 million.
Within Entertainment, Disney reported fiscal Q3 2026 SVOD revenue growth of 11% and an operating margin of 13%. Disney cautioned that the quarter’s margin was helped in part by the timing of marketing and programming spending. A single quarter should not be treated as a steady-state margin or as proof that future streaming profitability will follow the same path.
For fiscal 2025, Disney reported annual revenue of $94.425 billion and total segment operating income of $17.551 billion. Disney’s fiscal year ended September 27, 2025, so these figures are not directly comparable with Netflix’s calendar-year 2025 results. They do, however, demonstrate the scale and breadth of the parent company.
Streaming portfolio and bundling
Disney describes Disney+ programming across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic brands. Its broader streaming ecosystem also includes Hulu and sports offerings. Bundling can support retention and give Disney more ways to package entertainment, general programming and sports for households.
Disney’s fiscal 2025 annual report estimated approximately 132 million paid Disney+ subscribers as of September 27, 2025. This is a dated internal-management estimate, and it should not be compared directly with a Netflix subscriber figure: Netflix stopped reporting membership numbers during 2025, and the companies may define and report subscribers differently.

Why diversification can help
- Experiences, Sports and Entertainment do not respond identically to every economic or consumer trend.
- Theme parks, resorts and cruises can provide revenue streams that are not based solely on monthly streaming subscriptions.
- A successful intellectual-property portfolio can be monetized across films, series, merchandise, attractions and other channels.
Why diversification can hurt
- Investors must analyze several businesses with different capital needs, competitive dynamics and economic sensitivities.
- Sports rights, park construction, cruises and content production can require large commitments before revenue is realized.
- Strong consolidated results can conceal weak performance in a segment that matters to your investment thesis.
Growth: compare the cause, not just the percentage
Netflix’s 16% fiscal 2025 revenue growth and Disney’s 7% fiscal Q3 2026 revenue growth are not an apples-to-apples ranking. Netflix’s figure is a full calendar year; Disney’s is one fiscal quarter. More importantly, their growth drivers differ.

For Netflix, the disclosed contributors were membership growth, price increases and increased advertising revenue, with foreign exchange acting as a partial offset. For Disney, consolidated revenue includes the performance of Experiences, Sports and Entertainment, while the 11% SVOD growth figure applies specifically to streaming revenue in fiscal Q3 2026.
An investor should separate volume, price and mix. Revenue can rise because more people subscribe, because existing customers pay more, because advertising monetization improves, because a business acquires or launches new offerings, or because currency translation changes. Those sources have different durability and different effects on margins.
Profitability: keep GAAP and company measures separate
Disney’s $5.555 billion fiscal Q3 2026 total segment operating income, $17.551 billion fiscal 2025 total segment operating income and 13% Entertainment SVOD operating margin are company-reported measures. The total segment operating income figures are explicitly non-GAAP. They are useful for understanding how Disney evaluates its segments, but they should not be placed beside a Netflix GAAP measure as though the definitions were identical.

Disney’s 13% SVOD margin describes one quarter and was affected in part by the timing of marketing and programming spending. A lower or higher margin in another quarter could reflect spending timing rather than a permanent change in economics.
For a proper comparison, collect from the latest filings:
- GAAP revenue and operating income for each company.
- Operating margin calculated on the same basis.
- Company-defined streaming or segment measures, clearly labeled separately.
- Any reconciliation between reported GAAP results and adjusted or segment measures.
- Cash flow from operations and capital spending, because accounting profit does not show the full timing of content payments.
Cash generation and content obligations
Netflix’s disclosed commitments
Netflix’s fiscal 2025 filing reported approximately $5.7 billion of balance-sheet content liabilities as of December 31, 2025. It also warned that significant streaming commitments did not meet liability-recognition criteria and therefore were not included in that balance-sheet amount. Netflix reported $14.5 billion of aggregate principal amount of senior notes outstanding at year-end.

These figures are not a complete measure of every future cash payment. Content can be ordered, licensed or produced under arrangements that appear differently in liabilities, commitments, amortization and cash flow. A reader should not conclude that $5.7 billion represents Netflix’s entire remaining content burden.
How to analyze Disney fairly
The verified Disney figures above do not provide a same-date debt-and-content-obligation schedule. Before choosing between the stocks, retrieve Disney’s latest annual and quarterly filings and assemble the same categories used for Netflix: cash, debt, content commitments, capital expenditures, operating cash flow and repurchases.
Do not compare Netflix’s balance-sheet content liabilities with a Disney debt number from another date or with a different accounting definition. The meaningful question is whether each company can fund programming and other investments while preserving financial flexibility through weaker demand.
Valuation is the missing step in any stock verdict
Business quality alone cannot establish which stock is the better investment. A faster-growing company can be a poor investment if its share price already discounts exceptional results. A slower-growing diversified company can offer better returns if its cash flow and assets are valued conservatively.
Current prices, market capitalizations, enterprise values and forward or normalized earnings and cash-flow estimates were not verified alongside the operating figures above. Do not label either stock “cheaper,” “undervalued” or “expensive” without stating a market-data date and the calculation used.

- Set one date. Record the closing share price for NFLX and DIS on the same date.
- Calculate equity value. Multiply each share price by diluted shares outstanding from the latest filing or market source.
- Build enterprise value. Add debt and other relevant obligations, then subtract cash and cash equivalents using the same reporting date.
- Use comparable earnings measures. Compare GAAP price-to-earnings ratios only when the earnings periods and share counts are comparable. If earnings are distorted, use a clearly defined normalized figure.
- Check cash-flow valuation. Compare enterprise value to operating cash flow or free cash flow, while explaining how capital expenditures and content cash payments are treated.
- Stress the assumptions. Test a slower revenue-growth case, lower streaming margins, higher programming spending, adverse currency movements and weaker consumer demand.
- Separate Disney’s parts. If using a sum-of-the-parts approach, value Entertainment, Sports and Experiences with assumptions appropriate to each business rather than applying one streaming multiple to the entire company.
- Compare balance-sheet flexibility. Review maturities, interest costs, content commitments and planned capital spending before relying on a valuation multiple.
Which investor profile fits each stock?
Netflix may fit better if you want
- A relatively direct bet on global streaming revenue and operating-margin expansion.
- Exposure to subscription pricing, advertising monetization and content scale rather than theme-park or sports economics.
- A business whose results can be analyzed mainly through platform growth, engagement, monetization and content economics.
This preference still requires confidence that price increases and advertising can support growth without unacceptable churn, and that content obligations remain manageable.

Disney may fit better if you want
- A diversified media and experiences company in which streaming is important but not the only earnings engine.
- Potentially different sources of cash flow from Experiences, Sports and Entertainment.
- Exposure to a large intellectual-property portfolio that can be monetized across services, theatrical releases, attractions and consumer products.
This preference requires accepting greater business complexity and the possibility that strong streaming results are offset by weakness, investment needs or execution problems elsewhere.
Risks that can change the comparison
Netflix-specific risks
- Foreign-exchange movements can reduce reported growth even when local-currency demand is stronger.
- Price increases can improve revenue per customer but may increase cancellations.
- Advertising revenue is a newer contributor and may not grow evenly across markets.
- Senior notes and unrecognized streaming commitments can constrain cash-flow flexibility if content spending or refinancing needs rise.
Disney-specific risks
- Streaming margins can move sharply with the timing of marketing and programming spending.
- Sports rights and other programming commitments can require substantial cash before returns are visible.
- Experiences are exposed to travel demand, consumer spending, operating disruptions and large capital projects.
- Consolidated performance can make it harder to identify whether the specific Disney+ thesis is working.
Risks common to both
- Consumers can reduce entertainment spending or rotate among services.
- Content success is difficult to forecast, and a small number of releases can influence a quarter or year.
- Regulation, distribution negotiations, piracy, technology changes and currency movements can affect results.
- Market expectations can matter as much as reported growth: a company can post good results and still fall if investors expected more.
A monitoring dashboard for shareholders
After buying either stock, review the thesis rather than reacting to one headline. Track these items in each filing and earnings release:
- Revenue growth, with price, volume, advertising, foreign-exchange and acquisition effects separated where disclosed.
- GAAP operating income and margin, plus any company-defined streaming measure kept in a separate column.
- Operating cash flow, capital expenditures, content cash payments and share repurchases.
- Debt maturities, interest costs, cash balances and newly disclosed content or other fixed commitments.
- For Netflix, changes in monetization and the economics of advertising after membership counts were discontinued as a headline metric.
- For Disney, Entertainment SVOD performance alongside Sports and Experiences so that streaming is not mistaken for consolidated performance.
- Management outlook, clearly marked as forward-looking expectations rather than realized results.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger said in the company’s November 13, 2025 fiscal 2025 earnings release: “Our strategy, coupled with our portfolio of complementary businesses and a strong balance sheet, enables us to continue investing in high-quality offerings for our consumers and increasing our returns to shareholders, and I’m pleased with our many achievements this fiscal year to position Disney for the future.” That is management’s statement of strategy, not independent evidence that future returns will increase.
Bottom line: make the decision conditional
Netflix offers the cleaner streaming-centered thesis. Its fiscal 2025 revenue reached $45.183 billion and grew 16%, with growth attributed to membership, pricing and advertising. The trade-off is concentration and a balance sheet that includes $14.5 billion of senior notes plus content obligations that are not fully captured by the approximately $5.7 billion recognized on the balance sheet.
Disney offers broader exposure. Fiscal Q3 2026 revenue was $25.248 billion, total segment operating income was $5.555 billion, and Experiences supplied more segment operating income than Entertainment in that quarter. Disney’s SVOD business grew revenue 11% and posted a 13% operating margin, but spending timing influenced that margin and the figure is not a full-year run rate.
The rational choice is therefore conditional: favor NFLX if your valuation and assumptions support sustained streaming monetization and you accept concentrated execution and content risk; favor DIS if you value diversification and believe the broader portfolio is reasonably priced despite its complexity. Refresh the latest Netflix and Disney filings, obtain same-date market data, reconcile GAAP and non-GAAP measures, and then decide whether the expected return compensates you for the risks.
