Netflix to Cut About 6% of Worldwide Staff, or Roughly 1,000 Jobs

Netflix said on October 14, 2026, that it will eliminate about 6% of its worldwide workforce—roughly 1,000 positions. The reductions are expected to fall most heavily on product, technology, legal and human-resources teams. Netflix remains profitable; its leaders described the move as a decision to concentrate employees and spending on priority growth initiatives rather than a response to a quarterly loss.

What Netflix announced

The company’s October 14 announcement covers its global workforce. Netflix had about 16,000 full-time employees worldwide at the end of 2025, according to regulatory filings reported by the Associated Press. Six percent of that employee base is approximately 960 people, which accounts for the widely reported “roughly 1,000” figure.

Netflix has not publicly provided a country-by-country breakdown or a complete list of affected roles. The announcement identifies four functions expected to be most affected:

  • Human resources

The stated percentage is an approximation, so the final number of notices may differ from 960 as the process is implemented across countries and employment entities.

Why Netflix says it is making the cuts

Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said the business was strong but that Netflix needed to focus people and resources on its highest-priority work. In a memo to employees, they said the company must be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources” while investing in “high impact areas to improve our service.”

The memo also said, “Decisions like these are never easy, and we don’t take them lightly.” Axios reported that the leaders linked the restructuring to growth targets, saying that reaching those goals requires “focused choices across the business” so Netflix can continue serving members, partners, employees and investors.

Those statements frame the action as strategic reprioritization: Netflix is reducing staffing in some functions while directing resources toward work it believes can produce greater impact. The company has not characterized the announcement as an emergency response or reported quarterly crisis.

Is Netflix in financial trouble?

The available financial figures do not show a company reporting a quarterly loss. The Associated Press reported that Netflix posted $3.4 billion in net income and $12.56 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026. Net income was up 9% from the same quarter a year earlier, while revenue rose 13%.

A profitable quarter does not make layoffs financially irrelevant. Companies can cut positions to change their cost structure, remove overlapping work, redirect investment or prepare for different growth rates even while revenue and profit are rising. In Netflix’s explanation, the central issue is where employees and resources should be deployed, not an inability to pay current bills.

Investors and employees should therefore distinguish between the confirmed facts and unknowns. Netflix has disclosed the approximate global percentage and the functions most exposed, but it has not disclosed total severance costs, the timing of every position elimination, or whether further reductions are planned.

How this compares with Netflix’s last major layoffs

Coverage identifies 2022 as the last major Netflix layoff round. The October 2026 action is described as the company’s largest workforce reduction since then. The available reporting does not establish a directly comparable 2022 percentage, job count or department-by-department breakdown, so a precise numerical comparison cannot be made from the announced figures.

The timing is an important difference from a crisis-style layoff narrative. The 2026 announcement came alongside reported year-over-year growth in both revenue and net income. That does not eliminate the personal impact on affected workers, but it indicates that the company is making a portfolio and priority decision while still generating substantial profits.

What the announcement means for employees and readers

For affected employees

The announcement confirms the functions most likely to see reductions, but it does not specify individual teams, locations, selection criteria or severance terms. Employees should rely on direct company communications and applicable local employment rules for notice, consultation and benefits information.

For Netflix customers

A workforce reduction does not by itself establish that the service will be reduced or that prices will change. Management’s stated goal is to invest in areas that improve the service, but the announcement does not promise a particular product, technology or content change.

For investors and household budgets

The figures show a profitable, growing quarter at the time of the announcement, while the job cuts show management pursuing tighter prioritization. Anyone assessing Netflix’s outlook should watch subsequent filings and earnings reports for restructuring charges, changes in hiring, operating expenses and explanations of which growth initiatives receive the redirected resources.

Bottom line

Netflix is cutting about 6% of its global staff—approximately 1,000 jobs—primarily across product, technology, legal and human resources. The company says it is reallocating talent and money toward high-impact growth areas. With reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $12.56 billion and net income of $3.4 billion, the announcement is a strategic workforce reduction during a profitable period, and the largest Netflix cut reported since 2022.
