For U.S. customers, Netflix’s $8.99 Standard with ads is the lowest-cost option, $19.99 Standard removes advertising, and $26.99 Premium adds four simultaneous streams, 4K/HDR, six download devices, spatial audio, and capacity for up to two extra members. The right choice depends on how many people watch at once, whether you need 4K, and how often you download.
Netflix plans at a glance
The following are Netflix’s current U.S.-dollar examples, shown on its plan and pricing page in October 2026. Netflix bills monthly; it does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships. Taxes, local currency, package availability, and extra-member eligibility vary by country.

Netflix discontinued the Basic plan. A “screen” means a supported device actively streaming at the same time, not the number of phones, televisions, or tablets registered to the account.

How advertising works
Netflix describes the ad experience as “a few short ads per hour” before and during selected films and series. Breaks are inserted at natural plot points. Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while a television show or movie is playing.
#1 Best Overall
Commercial breaks can also appear during live events on any plan, so moving to an ad-free plan does not guarantee that every live broadcast is free of commercials.
Titles and profiles that are different
A small number of films and shows may be unavailable on the ad-supported plan because Netflix lacks the necessary licensing rights. Those titles display a lock icon. The limitation applies to specific titles rather than the whole catalog.
Netflix says advertisements are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. The ad plan includes Netflix games, as do the other plans.
How simultaneous screens and household rules work
Two versus four streams
Standard with ads and Standard each permit two supported devices to watch at once. Premium permits four. Starting a third stream on either Standard plan can trigger a message that too many people are watching; Premium raises that ceiling to four.

Who may use the account
Netflix defines an account as intended for people who live together in one household. Someone who lives elsewhere may be added only as an extra member when the plan and country support that feature. Standard includes an option for one extra member; Premium supports up to two. Eligibility and pricing are not universal, so the option shown in your account is the controlling one.
Resolution, HDR, and the equipment you need
What each plan can deliver
The two Standard tiers top out at 1080p Full HD in Netflix’s plan table. Premium adds 4K Ultra HD and HDR. Netflix calls “4K or 4K HDR” its highest currently available resolution, but a Premium subscription alone cannot force every title or device to display that quality.
The complete 4K signal chain
Netflix says delivery depends on the title, your internet speed, the Netflix app, the display, and every device between the service and the screen. For example, if you watch through a television, streaming stick, and audio receiver, Netflix says all three must support 4K or HDR. One incompatible component can reduce the output.
- The title must have a 4K or HDR version available.
- Your television or monitor must support the format you want.
- The streaming device and its Netflix app must support that format.
- Any receiver, switch, or other device carrying the signal must also be 4K/HDR compatible.
- Your connection must be fast and stable enough for the stream.
A 4K-compatible streaming media player can help when an older built-in television app is the bottleneck, but check the television, receiver, cables, and app support as a complete system before buying hardware.

Downloads and offline viewing
How many devices can store downloads
Standard with ads and Standard allow downloads on two supported devices. Premium allows downloads on six. This is a device limit for offline storage, separate from the number of devices that can stream simultaneously.
Download quality is a separate setting
Netflix’s download-quality setting is independent of your plan’s streaming resolution. Standard quality uses SD. High (also labeled Higher on some devices) can reach up to 1080p/HD when the device and title support it. Choosing a higher setting uses more storage; choosing Standard saves space for travel.
The ad-plan monthly download cap
On the ad-supported plan, Netflix limits downloads to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month, across two devices. The counter resets on the first day of each month. This is a count of download actions, not a promise that every title can be kept indefinitely; individual titles can have their own expiration or availability rules.

Downloads for You
Netflix’s automatic “Downloads for You” feature is unavailable on ad-supported plans. On a plan that supports it, the feature can automatically save recommended titles, so it may consume storage unless you disable it or manage its storage allocation.
Rank #4
Data use and home-internet limits
Netflix publishes up to 3 GB per hour for HD and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K when the account is using High data settings. Actual consumption varies with the title, device, connection, and selected data setting.
| Use case | Relevant plan consideration |
|---|---|
| Mobile hotspot or a capped broadband connection | 4K can consume up to 7 GB per hour at High settings; Premium’s picture benefit may not justify the data cost. |
| Typical 1080p television viewing | Either Standard tier supplies 1080p; the decision is mainly about ads, downloads, and extra-member eligibility. |
| Large 4K television with sufficient bandwidth | Premium is required for the plan’s 4K/HDR tier, subject to title and equipment support. |
If your internet provider has a monthly allowance, check Netflix’s playback data setting and your provider’s meter rather than assuming the plan’s maximum quality is always economical.
How to choose the least expensive plan that fits
Choose Standard with ads when
- The $8.99 U.S. example price is the priority.
- You can tolerate short, unskippable breaks and occasional title restrictions.
- Two simultaneous 1080p streams are enough.
- You download on no more than two devices and can live with the 15-downloads-per-device monthly cap.
Choose Standard when
- You want the same two-stream, 1080p limit without advertising.
- You need downloads on two devices but not six.
- Your household does not need Premium’s 4K/HDR or spatial-audio features.
- The account’s extra-member option for one person is sufficient and available in your country.
Choose Premium when
- Three or four people regularly watch at the same time.
- Your display and connected equipment support 4K/HDR and you will use that quality.
- More than two people need offline downloads, up to six supported devices.
- You want spatial audio or need capacity for up to two eligible extra members.
Do not pay for Premium solely because a television is labeled 4K: the title, app, network, and every link in the hardware chain must also support 4K/HDR.

“I bought Premium but the picture is still HD.”
Confirm that the title has a 4K version, playback is occurring in a compatible Netflix app, and the television, streaming player, receiver, and other signal-path devices all support 4K/HDR. A weak or unstable connection can also prevent the highest quality from being delivered.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
“A third person cannot watch on Standard.”
That plan allows two simultaneous streams, regardless of how many devices are registered. Stop one active stream, upgrade to Premium for four, or use an eligible extra-member arrangement rather than sharing the household account outside Netflix’s rules.
“The ad plan will not let me download another title.”
Check both limits: downloads are permitted on two devices, and each of those devices can make 15 downloads per calendar month. The monthly allowance resets on the first day of the next month. Remove old downloads or wait for the reset if the device and title are otherwise supported.
“Downloaded video looks blurry.”
Open the app’s download-quality setting and select High/Higher if you need up to 1080p and have enough storage. Standard quality is SD by design, and a title or device may not support HD downloads.

Prices, billing, and changes over time
The $8.99, $19.99, and $26.99 figures are U.S.-dollar examples from Netflix’s 2026 pricing information, not a worldwide price list. Your checkout total can differ because of country, taxes, bundles, or add-ons. Netflix bills monthly and may change plan availability or pricing; the account page at signup or renewal is the authoritative amount for your location.
You can change tiers when your viewing needs change. Before switching, check whether the destination plan still supports the number of simultaneous viewers, download devices, extra members, and picture quality you actually use.
