Netflix and Disney are not interchangeable streaming stocks. Netflix is primarily a global subscription-streaming company, while Disney combines entertainment and streaming with sports, licensing, theme parks, resorts, cruises and other experiences. A useful comparison therefore starts with business mix, then aligns reporting periods and examines growth, operating margins, cash generation, obligations, capital allocation and valuation using the same market-data date. The available figures here include Netflix’s fiscal 2025 results and Disney’s fiscal third quarter and nine-month results for fiscal 2026, so they should not be treated as a synchronized stock comparison.
What investors are really comparing
The question “Is Netflix stock better than Disney stock?” has no defensible answer without a date, valuation, time horizon and risk assumptions. The two companies earn money from different combinations of recurring subscriptions, advertising, content rights, sports, licensing and physical experiences.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Comparison area | Netflix | Disney |
|---|---|---|
| Primary engine | Global streaming memberships, with advertising and other activities as additional sources | Entertainment and streaming combined with sports, licensing, parks, resorts, cruises and merchandise |
| Key growth questions | Are pricing, membership demand, advertising and engagement increasing revenue faster than content and operating costs? | Which mix of streaming, sports, licensing and experiences is driving growth, and how cyclical is that growth? |
| Margin questions | Can operating margin expand while Netflix invests in content, advertising and live experiences? | How do parks, sports rights, streaming and studio cycles affect segment and consolidated margins? |
| Cash questions | How do content spending, content obligations and working-capital timing affect free cash flow? | How do parks, ships and other experiences investments compete with content, rights and streaming spending? |
| Valuation requirement | Same-date share price, diluted share count, earnings or cash flow and an explicit growth assumption | The same inputs, adjusted for a more diversified and cyclical segment mix |
Diversification can make Disney less dependent on one product, but it also adds capital intensity and operating complexity. Netflix’s narrower model can be easier to analyze, yet it leaves the company more exposed to streaming competition, content economics, pricing decisions and advertising execution.
Align the reporting periods before comparing growth
Period matching is a basic control that prevents a misleading conclusion. Netflix’s cited filing covers the calendar year ended December 31, 2025. Disney’s cited materials cover fiscal third quarter 2026 and the nine months ended June 27, 2026. A full-year Netflix number should not be placed beside a single Disney quarter or nine-month total and described as if both represent the same economic window.

For a current investment decision, obtain the latest Netflix quarterly release available on the date of analysis and compare equivalent quarters or trailing-twelve-month periods. Keep calendar and fiscal year labels visible, and identify whether a figure is quarterly, year-to-date or full-year.
Analyze revenue growth by its source
Netflix: pricing, memberships and advertising
Netflix’s 2025 Form 10-K says revenue growth was driven primarily by membership growth, price increases and increased advertising revenue, partly offset by foreign-exchange effects. Monthly membership fees remained the main revenue source. The filing also lists advertising, consumer products, live experiences and other activities, but says non-membership revenue was not material in 2025, 2024 or 2023.
That mix means an investor should break revenue growth into several questions rather than treating the 16% increase as a single trend:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- How much came from more paying households, and how much from higher prices?
- Are price increases being retained without a material deterioration in engagement or cancellations?
- Is advertising becoming a meaningful second engine, or is it still supplementary?
- How much did foreign-exchange movement change reported growth compared with constant-currency performance?
- Are live events and consumer products expanding profitably, or adding cost and complexity before they become material?
Netflix discontinued reporting membership counts and average revenue per paying membership in 2025, saying revenue and operating margin better represent current performance. Do not present an older subscriber total as a current recurring disclosure unless a newer company release independently confirms it.
Disney: multiple engines with different economics
Disney’s revenue spans services and products that include streaming subscriptions, affiliate fees, content sales, resorts and vacations, theme-park admissions, merchandise and experiences. Its fiscal Q3 2026 materials also discuss ESPN audience trends, subscription and affiliate revenue, streaming integration and Disney+ plans.

For Disney, revenue growth should be decomposed by segment and by transaction type. A park-attendance increase, a sports-affiliate contract, a licensing arrangement and a streaming subscription do not have the same margin, capital requirement or sensitivity to the economy. Ask which segment produced the change, whether it was volume, price, foreign exchange, a transaction or a timing effect, and whether the change is recurring.
Compare operating profitability, not just net income
Netflix’s margin progression
Netflix reported that operating margin improved by approximately three percentage points in 2025. The company attributed the improvement primarily to revenue growing faster than cost of revenues, sales and marketing and general and administrative expenses. Operating margin is especially useful for Netflix because it shows whether scale and pricing are offsetting the cost of programming and growth investments.

Review that margin alongside content spending, content obligations, advertising investment, geographic mix and foreign-exchange effects. A higher margin can coexist with substantial future content commitments, and a lower margin in a particular period can reflect deliberate investment rather than a broken model.
Disney’s reported earnings require reconciliation
Disney’s net income attributable to Disney was $2.6 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, compared with $5.3 billion in the prior-year quarter. The comparison is distorted because the year-ago quarter included a $3.3 billion non-cash tax benefit connected with Hulu’s U.S. income-tax classification.
Disney’s nine-month comparison also identifies a favorable prior-year tax resolution and an A+E investment impairment in the current period. These items make headline EPS or net income an incomplete measure of underlying operating progress. Read segment operating income, consolidated operating income, cash flow and the reconciliation between GAAP and adjusted measures. Adjusted results can aid analysis, but they do not replace GAAP results.

Examine cash generation and capital requirements
Accounting profit does not show how much cash a company can deploy. For Netflix, examine operating cash flow and free cash flow together with payments for content, production commitments, working-capital timing and debt service. The 2025 Form 10-K’s cash-flow, content-obligation and risk-factor sections are necessary to understand how much of reported earnings is available after maintaining the service.
For Disney, separate recurring content and sports-rights spending from capital expenditures on parks, resorts, ships and other experiences. A park expansion may require cash well before it produces revenue, while a rights payment can have a different timing pattern from the related advertising or affiliate receipts. Compare cash from operations, capital expenditures, free cash flow, debt maturities and contractual commitments over the same period.
| Cash-generation question | Why it matters for Netflix | Why it matters for Disney |
|---|---|---|
| What must be spent to maintain the product? | Content production and licensing are central to subscriber retention and engagement. | Content, sports rights and streaming investment coexist with physical experiences and resort spending. |
| How predictable is cash timing? | Production schedules and payment timing can make cash flow differ from reported earnings. | Large projects, rights contracts and seasonal park demand can create greater timing swings. |
| What competes for excess cash? | Content expansion, debt reduction, buybacks and new initiatives. | Capital projects, dividends, repurchases, debt reduction and portfolio transactions. |
Assess revenue quality and resilience
Revenue quality asks how durable a dollar of revenue is and what it costs to reproduce.
Netflix questions
- Can the company raise prices while preserving retention and engagement?
- Is advertising demand broad and repeatable, or concentrated among a few buyers or periods?
- Does content spending create durable viewing value, or must spending continually rise to maintain attention?
- How exposed are reported results to currency movements in international markets?
- Do live experiences and consumer products remain immaterial, or do they become meaningful enough to alter the risk profile?
Disney questions
- How resilient are park attendance, hotel occupancy, cruise demand and consumer spending during an economic slowdown?
- Can sports distribution and rights costs support attractive long-term returns?
- How stable are licensing, sponsorship and affiliate arrangements?
- Does streaming improve economics as scale rises, or require continued investment?
- Does diversification reduce volatility, or simply move risk among segments with different cycles?
Disney reported $16 billion of future revenue from unsatisfied performance obligations as of June 27, 2026. The filing says these obligations primarily relate to future intellectual-property availability under existing arrangements with merchandise and co-branding licensees, sponsors, streaming-video-on-demand wholesalers, sports sublicensees and television affiliates. Disney expected to recognize approximately $2 billion in the remainder of fiscal 2026, $6 billion in fiscal 2027, $4 billion in fiscal 2028 and $4 billion thereafter. These are fixed consideration or minimum guarantees within the filing’s defined scope; they are not forecasts of profit, free cash flow or share performance.
Review balance-sheet obligations and capital allocation
Per-share returns depend on how a company finances growth and distributes cash. For Netflix, review cash, debt, content commitments, maturities, share repurchases and diluted share count in the latest filing. A strong operating trend can produce a different equity outcome if leverage rises or buybacks occur at elevated prices.

For Disney, examine debt and capital commitments alongside dividends, repurchases and investment in parks, ships and other experiences. Disney said it expected at least $9 billion of fiscal 2026 share repurchases, including planned use of approximately $1.2 billion from proceeds of its agreement to sell its 50% stake in A+E Global Media. This is management’s expectation, not a guaranteed level of repurchases or investment return. Check actual purchases and year-end share count against the plan.

The available information does not establish a same-date NFLX and DIS share price, market capitalization or valuation-multiple series. Therefore, it does not support calling either stock “cheaper” or “better valued.” Market capitalization, trailing and forward earnings multiples and free-cash-flow yield change with price and analyst estimates.
Build the comparison on one market-data date and disclose the definitions:
- Record each company’s closing share price and the date and currency used.
- Use diluted shares outstanding from the corresponding filing to calculate market capitalization, or state the source and date of any market-cap figure.
- Choose a metric—GAAP earnings, adjusted earnings, operating cash flow or free cash flow—and use the same definition for both companies.
- For forward multiples, identify the estimate provider, estimate date and forecast period.
- Adjust for cash, debt and other relevant obligations when using enterprise-value metrics.
- State the growth, margin and risk assumptions that justify a premium or discount.
| Metric | Netflix interpretation | Disney interpretation | Required caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings | Reflects streaming growth and margin expectations | Can be distorted by tax items, impairments and segment cycles | Use matched GAAP or clearly labeled adjusted earnings |
| Price-to-free-cash-flow | Shows value after content cash spending | Must account for large experiences and rights investments | Use the same trailing period and cash-flow definition |
| Enterprise value to operating cash flow | Useful when debt and cash balances affect equity value | Helpful for a diversified company with substantial obligations | State treatment of leases, restricted cash and other adjustments |
Track disclosure changes and strategic execution
Netflix’s decision to stop reporting membership counts and average revenue per paying membership changes how investors monitor the business. Revenue, operating margin, cash flow, content economics and regional disclosures now carry more weight than a single subscriber headline.

Disney’s fiscal Q3 2026 release said the company plans to introduce elements of a more comprehensive Disney+ membership ecosystem in spring 2027 and described progress toward a unified app experience for Hulu standalone and bundle subscribers. These are strategic intentions, not established financial results. Evaluate execution, customer adoption, technology spending and any effect on churn, pricing and advertising when later disclosures provide evidence.

Risks that can invalidate a quick comparison
- Period mismatch: Comparing Netflix’s fiscal 2025 with Disney’s single quarter or nine-month period can create a false growth ranking.
- Stale valuation: A multiple from one date is not a current multiple after a significant price or estimate change.
- One-time accounting items: Disney’s $3.3 billion prior-year Hulu tax benefit materially changes the net-income comparison, while other tax, impairment and transaction effects can alter nine-month results.
- Changing KPIs: Netflix no longer provides membership counts in the same way, and Disney subscriber figures also require the newest company disclosures.
- Capital intensity: Content, sports rights, parks, ships and other experiences can consume cash even when reported revenue is growing.
- Execution risk: Repurchase expectations and Disney+ plans are forward-looking statements subject to market conditions and management execution.
- Currency and geography: International revenue can grow in local currency while reported results are reduced by exchange rates.
A practical NFLX-versus-DIS comparison checklist
- Set the investor horizon. A one-year thesis may focus on the next earnings cycle and valuation rerating; a five-year thesis should emphasize durable cash generation, reinvestment returns and balance-sheet resilience.
- Refresh both filings. Obtain the latest Netflix earnings release and filing available on the analysis date, then use Disney’s latest earnings release and Form 10-Q or Form 10-K.
- Normalize the periods. Compare matching quarters, matching nine-month windows or trailing-twelve-month data.
- Map the revenue engines. Separate subscriptions, advertising, content sales, sports, licensing, parks and other experiences.
- Compare operating performance. Review revenue growth, operating margin, segment income and the drivers of each change.
- Bridge earnings to cash. Include content spending, rights payments, capital expenditures, working capital, debt service and contractual obligations.
- Check capital allocation. Measure actual repurchases, dividends, debt changes and share-count changes against management plans.
- Calculate valuation on one date. Use clearly labeled GAAP or adjusted figures and disclose the estimate source.
- Stress-test the thesis. Model weaker pricing, slower advertising, lower park demand, higher rights costs, adverse currency movement or delayed strategic execution.
- Write the conclusion conditionally. Explain which assumptions favor Netflix, which favor Disney and what evidence would change the view.
How different investor profiles may view the two stocks
An investor prioritizing a focused streaming model
Netflix may be easier to analyze when the thesis centers on global streaming scale, pricing power, advertising monetization and operating-margin expansion. The trade-off is greater dependence on the economics of one primary business and on continual content effectiveness.
An investor prioritizing diversified entertainment exposure
Disney may appeal to an investor who wants streaming alongside sports, licensing and physical experiences. The trade-off is that parks, resorts, cruises, studios and sports rights bring different cycles, capital needs and execution risks, making consolidated results harder to interpret.
An investor seeking a valuation opportunity
Neither stock can be identified as the bargain from the figures above because synchronized market prices and valuation multiples are not established. The appropriate choice depends on the price paid for each company’s expected growth, margin, cash generation and risks on the same date.

Bottom line
Compare Netflix and Disney as different collections of businesses, not as two versions of the same streaming service. Align the periods, separate recurring operating performance from tax and transaction effects, inspect cash commitments and capital allocation, and calculate valuation with synchronized prices and definitions. Only then can an investor make a reasoned choice consistent with a stated time horizon and risk tolerance.
