For US subscribers, Netflix has three main choices: Standard with ads at $8.99 a month, Standard at $19.99, and Premium at $26.99. The cheaper tier is 1080p and allows two simultaneous streams, but inserts short, unskippable commercials and omits a small number of licensed titles. Standard keeps the same two-stream, 1080p and two-download-device limits without regular ads. Premium is the household option, with four simultaneous streams, 4K HDR, downloads on six devices, spatial audio and up to two extra-member slots.

Netflix bills on the date you started the subscription. There is no annual or lifetime plan, so multiplying a monthly price by 12 is only an annualized comparison: $107.88 for Standard with ads, $239.88 for Standard, or $323.88 for Premium before tax. Netflix says its Basic plan has been discontinued.

The lower monthly price
At $8.99 per month in the United States, Standard with ads is the least expensive regular Netflix plan. Netflix describes the ad-supported experience as a way to offer the service at a lower price. It is available in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom, although some packages and third-party billing partners do not support it.

How the advertising works
Most television shows and movies contain commercial breaks before and during playback. Netflix says viewers should expect “a few short ads per hour” and that it aims to place them at natural plot breaks. You cannot skip or fast-forward these ads while watching a show or movie. Live events can contain commercial breaks on every plan; on an ad-free plan, the replay removes commercial breaks after the live event.
What you give up
A small number of shows and movies are unavailable on the ad-supported experience because of licensing restrictions. Those titles display a lock icon. The catalog limitation is separate from picture quality: available titles stream at up to 1080p, the same maximum resolution as Standard.
Downloads and profiles
The plan supports downloads on two supported devices. That is a device limit, not a promise that every title can be downloaded. Ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games, so those uses do not follow the normal ad-break pattern.
What Standard adds for its higher price
Ad-free shows and movies
Standard costs $19.99 per month, $11 more than Standard with ads. In return, regular advertisements do not interrupt shows and movies. This does not remove commercial breaks from live events, which can occur on all plans.

The same core capacity as the ad tier
Standard permits viewing on two supported devices at the same time, streams at up to 1080p Full HD, and allows downloads on two supported devices. If your household never needs more than two concurrent streams and 1080p is sufficient, the decision is primarily whether uninterrupted viewing and a complete licensed catalog are worth the additional $11 each month.
One extra-member slot
The US plan table lists one extra member for Standard. Extra-member eligibility can vary with the account’s package or billing arrangement, and Netflix does not permit direct sharing with people outside the household. Where the feature is available, the extra member must be added through Netflix’s extra-member arrangement rather than simply receiving the account password.
What Premium is designed to solve
Four people watching at once
Premium raises simultaneous viewing from two supported devices to four. This is the meaningful upgrade for a household in which separate people regularly watch different programs at the same time. The simultaneous-device number is not the same as the number of profiles or people who can use the account; it is the maximum number of active streams under the plan.
4K HDR picture
Premium is the only listed plan with 4K Ultra HD and HDR. Choose it only if the titles you watch, your display and your viewing setup can make use of that higher format. Standard with ads and Standard both top out at 1080p, so moving between those two plans will not improve resolution.

More offline devices and audio
Premium supports downloads on six supported devices, compared with two on either Standard plan. It also lists spatial audio. Those allowances matter to families with several phones or tablets that need offline viewing, or to viewers whose compatible audio equipment can use spatial sound.
Two extra-member slots
The US table permits up to two extra members on Premium. As with Standard, eligibility depends on the account and billing setup, and people outside the Netflix household cannot share the account directly.
How to choose among the three plans
Choose Standard with ads when price is the priority
- You want the lowest monthly bill.
- Short, unskippable ad breaks are acceptable.
- 1080p is enough for your screens.
- No more than two devices need to stream at once.
- Two devices are enough for offline downloads, and the occasional locked title is not a deal-breaker.
This plan saves $11 per month versus Standard and $18 per month versus Premium. Those are recurring differences, not introductory discounts, according to the current US table.

Standard is $11 more per month than the ad tier. Its value is convenience and the broader licensed catalog, not additional streams or sharper resolution.

Choose Premium for capacity, 4K or multiple extra members
- Three or four people may watch at the same time.
- You specifically want 4K Ultra HD and HDR.
- Six download devices are useful.
- Spatial audio is important to your setup.
- You need up to two eligible extra-member slots.
Premium costs $7 more per month than Standard and $18 more than Standard with ads. If none of its extra capacity or formats will be used, the lower plans avoid paying for unused features.

Simultaneous viewing is a ceiling on active playback
“Two supported devices” means two streams can be playing at the same time on either Standard plan. Premium raises that ceiling to four. A person can have a profile without consuming a stream; the limit matters when playback is active.
Download-device limits are separate
Downloads are authorized on two supported devices with Standard with ads and Standard, and on six with Premium. These counts do not increase the number of live streams. A household can have offline content on the permitted devices while still being limited to the plan’s simultaneous-viewing number when people watch online.

Resolution follows the plan, not the screen alone
Both Standard choices are capped at 1080p Full HD. Premium adds 4K Ultra HD and HDR. A 4K-capable television by itself does not change a Standard stream into 4K; the plan must include the format and the particular title must be available in it.

Household rules and extra-member costs
Netflix defines a household around devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Its US guidance says you cannot share your account outside your household. If another person lives elsewhere, the supported route is an extra-member slot where Netflix offers it for your account.

The plan table lists one extra member on Standard and up to two on Premium. It does not list an extra-member allowance for Standard with ads. Taxes may apply, and a subscription obtained through a package or add-on may have different pricing or eligibility.
Billing, availability and catalog caveats
Monthly billing rather than an annual commitment
Netflix charges monthly on the signup date. There is no annual or lifetime billing option in the current US information. If your payment is handled by a mobile, broadband, pay-TV or other partner, that partner may control the charge and the available plans.

Country and package differences
The dollar figures in this article are for the United States. Netflix lists the ad-supported plan in 12 countries, but prices, taxes, plan names, extra-member rules and supported features can differ by country. Check the plan screen shown for your billing country before switching.
Licensing and live programming
Ad-supported viewing does not include every title: Netflix says a small number are unavailable because of licensing restrictions and marks them with a lock. Live events are a separate case, because commercial breaks may appear across all plans. Replays on ad-free plans remove those live-event commercial breaks after the event.
Why Netflix offers an ads tier
Netflix said in its 2024 shareholder letter that advertising serves two strategic purposes: enabling lower prices for consumers and creating an additional revenue and profit stream. In the second quarter of 2024, Netflix reported that more than 45% of signups in markets with the ads plan chose that tier. That percentage is historical context, not a current 2026 market-share figure.
