For US subscribers, Standard with ads costs $8.99 a month, Standard costs $19.99, and Premium costs $26.99. Standard with ads and Standard both stream in 1080p on two devices and permit downloads on two devices. Premium is the only tier in the cited plan table with 4K Ultra HD, HDR, four simultaneous streams, six download devices, and spatial audio.
The right choice depends on what you will actually use: tolerance for commercials and missing licensed titles, the number of people watching at once, your TV and audio equipment, and whether extra-member slots matter. Prices and availability below are for Netflix’s US consumer plans shown on October 15, 2026; taxes, bundles, country, add-ons and later plan changes can alter the amount you see at checkout.

US Netflix plans at a glance
Netflix’s Help Center table lists three consumer tiers for the United States. The figures below reproduce those listed limits and prices; check the Netflix Plans and Pricing page before paying because prices and eligibility can change.
| Plan | US monthly price | Advertising and catalog | Maximum simultaneous devices | Video quality | Download devices | Extra members |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | Includes ads; some titles may be unavailable because of licensing | 2 | 1080p (Full HD) | 2 | Not listed in the cited table |
| Standard | $19.99 | Ad-free movies, TV shows and games | 2 | 1080p (Full HD) | 2 | Option to add 1 extra member |
| Premium | $26.99 | Ad-free movies, TV shows and games | 4 | 4K (Ultra HD) plus HDR | 6 | Option to add up to 2 extra members; spatial audio |
Netflix’s public plan copy describes the same basic split: Standard with ads delivers 1080p with advertising, Standard delivers 1080p without advertising, and Premium delivers 4K plus HDR without advertising and adds spatial audio. See the Netflix plan information page for the current marketing description.

What each tier really gives you
Standard with ads: the lowest monthly bill
At $8.99 per month in the cited US table, Standard with ads is the entry point. It keeps Full HD resolution and two simultaneous devices, so it is not a low-resolution plan. The trade-off is the viewing experience: ordinary programming contains advertising, and Netflix says licensing restrictions can make some movies or shows unavailable on this tier. If a title is important to your household, search for it while signed out or confirm its availability before relying on the cheaper plan.
Downloads are available on two supported devices at a time. That can cover, for example, one phone and one tablet, but the plan does not provide the six-device offline capacity listed for Premium. Netflix also notes that live events, special events or other new features may include commercial breaks across all plans; paying for an ad-free tier does not guarantee that every future type of programming will be interruption-free. The Netflix explanation of the ad-supported experience describes the lower price and these catalog and advertising qualifications.
Standard: ad-free 1080p for one or two screens
Standard costs $19.99 a month in the US table. It removes ordinary ads from movies, TV shows and games while retaining 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous devices and downloads on two supported devices. This is the direct step up for a household that dislikes advertising but does not have a practical need for 4K/HDR or more than two concurrent streams.

That is a recurring charge, not a one-time upgrade fee, and it does not buy additional simultaneous streams or higher resolution. You are paying primarily for the ad-free catalog experience and the absence of the ad-supported tier’s licensing exclusions.
Premium: the capacity and quality tier
Premium is listed at $26.99 per month. It is the only cited tier that combines 4K Ultra HD with HDR, four simultaneous devices, six download devices and Netflix spatial audio. Premium also remains ad-free for ordinary movies, TV shows and games.
Rank #2
- Unlimited movies, TV shows, and more. Watch anywhere. Cancel anytime.

Premium makes sense when the equipment and household use justify it. A compatible 4K/HDR television or monitor is needed to see the picture-quality benefit, and spatial audio requires compatible playback equipment and content. If your screens are Full HD, the extra resolution will not be visible even though the subscription includes it. Four streams are useful only when four people actually watch at the same time; merely having four profiles or several devices does not by itself create value from the concurrency allowance.
How to choose a plan without overpaying
Choose Standard with ads when the monthly bill is the priority
- You are comfortable with commercial breaks during ordinary viewing.
- 1080p is sufficient for your screens.
- Two concurrent streams and two download devices cover your routine.
- You have checked that the titles you care about are available on the ad-supported catalog.
This option is the cheapest listed tier, but its lower price is conditional on accepting both advertising and possible licensing-based title exclusions. Those conditions matter more than the resolution specification for many households.
Choose Standard when you want straightforward ad-free viewing
- Your household watches on no more than two devices at once.
- Full HD is adequate and you do not need Premium’s audio features.
- Two offline-download devices are enough for travel or commuting.
- You want the ordinary movies, shows and games experience without the ad-supported catalog limitation.
Standard is the simplest fit for one or two regular viewers using 1080p equipment. It avoids paying for capacity that will sit unused while still removing ordinary advertising.
Choose Premium when a specific feature pays for itself
- Your display and playback chain support 4K and HDR and you care about using them.
- Three or four people routinely stream at the same time.
- More than two devices need downloaded programming.
- You have compatible equipment and want Netflix spatial audio.
- You need the option to add up to two extra members under the plan’s listed rules.
Premium costs $7 more per month than Standard at the cited US prices. That premium is defensible when you use the fourth stream, 4K/HDR, six-device downloads, spatial audio or additional extra-member capacity. It is not automatically better for a two-person household watching Full HD video.
Understanding simultaneous streams versus devices
The plan table’s device number is a concurrent-use limit: two for Standard with ads and Standard, four for Premium. It describes how many devices can play Netflix at the same time, not how many devices can be registered to an account or how many people may use it at different times. A household that usually watches alone will not gain anything from Premium’s fourth simultaneous stream, while a family with three concurrent viewers can run into the lower tiers’ limit.
Rank #3

- Give the gift of entertainment so your friends and family can stream unlimited films and Netflix original series. Whether your loved one already has a Netflix account or they will be creating a new account, they can use a Netflix gift card toward their membership.

Downloads are a separate allowance. Standard with ads and Standard each list two supported download devices, while Premium lists six. Downloading a title for offline playback does not increase the number of live streams available; it uses the plan’s offline-device allowance. When planning travel, count the phones, tablets or computers that will hold downloads rather than counting people alone.
Ads, catalog availability and special programming
The ad-supported tier is not simply Standard with commercials added to an identical catalog. Netflix warns that some titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions. A household that chooses the cheaper plan should verify availability for must-watch series, films and games before switching.
Ad-free Standard and Premium remove ordinary ads from the listed movies, TV shows and games. Netflix nevertheless says live events, special events or other new features may contain commercial breaks on any plan. Treat ad-free as a description of the normal catalog experience, not a promise that every form of future programming will have no breaks.
4K, HDR and spatial audio: what you need at home
Premium’s 4K (Ultra HD) and HDR labels describe what the subscription can deliver, not what every screen will display. To benefit, you need a compatible 4K/HDR television or monitor, a streaming device or app that supports the relevant formats, and a connection capable of sustaining high-quality streaming. If any part of that chain is limited to 1080p, playback can fall back to the lower resolution.
Spatial audio is likewise a Premium feature rather than a guarantee that every speaker setup will reproduce an immersive effect. Compatible content and audio hardware are required. If you listen through ordinary stereo equipment, Premium’s spatial-audio inclusion may have little practical value, although the plan’s stream and download allowances may still matter.

Household sharing and extra members
Netflix defines a household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch. Its stated rule is: you cannot share a Netflix account outside that household. The restriction applies regardless of whether the other person is a relative or pays you informally.
The cited table lists an option to add one extra member on Standard and up to two extra members on Premium. Extra members have their own account and password, while the inviting account pays for them. Standard with ads has no extra-member option listed in that table. Availability, pricing and eligibility for an extra member can vary by country and account, so review the options shown in your Netflix account before assuming a slot is available.

The quoted US prices are monthly: $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard and $26.99 for Premium. They are not annual rates, and Netflix states that it does not offer annual, multi-month or lifetime membership plans. Taxes, bundles, add-ons and country-specific pricing can change the amount charged or the plans presented to you.
Because the prices are recurring, compare the feature you need with the ongoing difference rather than treating an upgrade as a one-time purchase. Moving from Standard with ads to Standard adds $11 per month for ordinary ad-free viewing and the broader listed catalog; moving from Standard to Premium adds $7 per month for 4K/HDR, two more simultaneous streams, four additional download devices, spatial audio and greater extra-member capacity. Those are arithmetic comparisons of the published monthly figures, not promotional savings.

A practical decision checklist
- Count concurrent viewers. If more than two people regularly watch at once, the two-stream tiers cannot meet that pattern; Premium lists four.
- Check your screens. If every important screen is 1080p, Premium’s 4K/HDR capability may not be useful.
- Decide how you feel about ads. Accepting commercial breaks and possible title exclusions points toward Standard with ads; rejecting either points toward an ad-free tier.
- Count offline devices. Two download devices cover the lower tiers; choose Premium only when six-device capacity is genuinely needed.
- Review household rules. If someone lives outside the main residence, use the permitted extra-member arrangement where offered rather than treating ordinary account sharing as allowed.
- Verify current availability and price. Open Netflix’s plan page and your account’s checkout screen because geography, taxes, bundles, eligibility and later plan revisions can change the displayed offer.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming Premium is required for ad-free viewing
Standard is also ad-free for the ordinary movies, TV shows and games catalog. Premium’s additional cost buys capacity, picture and audio features, not the only route to removing ordinary ads.

Assuming every title is on the ads tier
Licensing can make some titles unavailable on Standard with ads. Check the actual catalog before choosing it for a particular show or film.
Confusing downloads with simultaneous streams
Two download devices does not mean two total devices can ever use the account, and six downloads on Premium does not mean six live streams. Keep the offline and concurrent limits separate when planning use.
Expecting ad-free treatment for every event
Netflix’s own guidance allows commercial breaks for live events, special events and other new features across all plans. An ad-free plan should not be evaluated as a guarantee for those formats.

The account rule is tied to the main residence. Use the listed extra-member option when eligible; do not assume that a family relationship alone makes out-of-household sharing permissible.
One-minute verdict
Standard with ads is the budget choice if 1080p, two streams and two download devices are enough and you accept ads and possible title exclusions. Standard is the balanced ad-free 1080p option for up to two simultaneous viewers. Premium is justified by a compatible 4K/HDR setup, more than two concurrent viewers, six-device downloading, spatial audio or the need for up to two extra-member slots. Recheck the US plan page before subscribing because the figures above reflect the October 15, 2026 listing rather than a permanent worldwide price.
