Netflix now treats an account as belonging to one Netflix Household: the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account holder watches. Netflix states, “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” A person who lives elsewhere must either open a separate account or be added as a paid extra member when the plan, country and billing arrangement allow it. Simply giving that person your password is not an approved workaround.
The rules matter because Netflix identifies a household through the home television’s internet connection and related device signals, then may ask an out-of-household device to verify access. The legitimate options, prices and troubleshooting steps are different for a permanent second user, a traveler and a family member who lives at home.

What Netflix means by a “Netflix Household”
A Netflix Household is location-and-device based rather than a list of people you manually register. Netflix says it establishes the Household from devices that use the same internet connection as the main TV used by the account holder. Its stated signals are the internet protocol (IP) address, device IDs and account activity. Netflix also says it does not collect GPS data to determine a device’s precise location.
In practical terms, the home TV and the regular home internet connection become the reference point. Phones, tablets, computers and streaming devices that routinely connect through that household network are more likely to be recognized as part of it. A person who lives at another address can therefore encounter a verification request even if they have a legitimate profile and know the password.

Netflix’s policy wording is explicit: “People who are not in your household will need to create their own account to watch Netflix, or can be added as an extra member.” Profiles do not expand the geographic definition of a Household; they organize viewers inside the account that already has that Household.
When to update the Household
If you permanently move, replace the main television, or change the home internet service, the account holder can use the TV’s Update Netflix Household option. Complete that process while the TV is connected to the internet connection that should define the new main location. The change is intended for the account holder’s actual primary viewing location, not as a way to authorize several unrelated homes.
Can you share a Netflix password with someone who lives elsewhere?
Not under Netflix’s standard account terms. Someone who does not live with the account holder should have a separate account or an extra-member invitation where that feature is available. Sharing the password informally leaves the account holder responsible for access while offering no official way to manage a second household.

Netflix’s paid extra-member feature is the route designed for many permanent out-of-household viewers. Availability is conditional, not universal:
- The account generally must be Standard or Premium. Ad-supported plans are excluded, and some packages and third-party-billed accounts cannot add extra members.
- The extra member must activate the invitation in the same country as the account owner.
- Country rules, the billing method and the specific package determine whether the option appears.
- The account owner pays for and manages the slot, even though the extra member receives separate sign-in credentials.
If any of those conditions fail, the person needs an independent Netflix account. A separate account is also the practical choice when the viewer lives in another country, needs several profiles, or expects more simultaneous devices than an extra-member slot permits.

How to add an extra member
- Confirm that the account is on an eligible non-ad-supported Standard or Premium package and that the billing arrangement supports extra members.
- Check that the invited person will activate the invitation in the same country as the account owner.
- Use the account-management controls shown by Netflix to purchase an available extra-member slot and send the invitation.
- Have the invited person accept the invitation and create their own password and profile. The account owner remains the payer and can manage the slot.
- Verify that the extra member can sign in on a supported device before cancelling any existing independent subscription.
Netflix may present different prices or eligibility messages by country, package and billing partner. If the invitation or purchase control is missing, do not assume that repeatedly sharing the password will activate the feature; check the plan and billing restrictions first.
What an extra member gets—and what they do not
An extra member has a separate account identity, password and profile, so their recommendations and viewing activity are not mixed into the owner’s primary profile. The owner still controls the paid slot. Netflix generally limits an extra member to one profile and one supported device watching at a time.

Someone who wants multiple household members to have separate profiles, more than one simultaneous stream, or freedom to pay Netflix directly should create a separate account. An extra member also cannot be used to bypass the same-country activation requirement.
Video and audio capabilities, download allowances and other playback limits can vary by the package and country. Netflix’s account screens are the place to confirm those details for a particular invitation; the published US listing does not establish one universal set of limits for every market.

| Plan or option | US monthly price shown in 2026 | Extra-member availability shown |
|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 per month | Not eligible because ad-supported plans are excluded |
| Standard | $19.99 per month | One extra-member slot |
| Premium | $26.99 per month | Up to two extra-member slots |
| Extra member with ads | $7.99 per month per slot | Applies where the account and country support that option |
| Extra member without ads | $9.99 per month per slot | Applies where the account and country support that option |
These figures come from the US Help Center listing and can change. A third-party package may have different rules, and the amount shown at checkout is the controlling price for that account. Before upgrading or inviting someone, compare the recurring slot charge with the price of an independent account in the viewer’s country.

The right choice depends on how independent the second viewer needs to be. Use this comparison before committing to a slot.
| Question | Extra member | Separate account |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays? | The original account owner pays and manages the slot. | The new account holder can pay independently. |
| Country eligibility | Activation must be in the same country as the owner; package and billing restrictions apply. | Set up under the viewer’s own country and available plans. |
| Profiles | One profile. | Profile capacity follows the selected account plan; Netflix allows up to five profiles on a regular account. |
| Simultaneous viewing | One supported device at a time for the extra member. | Limits follow the selected plan. |
| Billing control | Owner controls the slot and can remove or manage it. | Viewer controls payment and account decisions. |
| Best fit | One person living elsewhere who needs a simple, owner-paid access arrangement. | A household, a viewer in another country, or anyone needing multiple profiles or greater independence. |
The table’s plan-level streaming, resolution, download and audio limits are not stated as one universal value because Netflix varies them by plan and market. Check the exact plan page attached to the account rather than assuming that an extra member has every feature of the owner’s subscription.
Profiles are not extra members
A regular Netflix account can contain up to five profiles. Profiles are labels inside the same account: they separate recommendations, watch history and settings but do not create a new Household or a new payer. Adding a sixth person by creating another profile does not authorize someone who lives at a different address.
An extra member is different. The extra member receives their own sign-in and one profile, while the owner pays for the slot. If the viewer starts with a regular profile and later moves to an independent or extra-member account, Netflix’s profile-transfer feature can carry over recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings. The transfer preserves personalization without turning the original profile into permission to share across homes.

How Netflix works when you are traveling
Travel is not the same as permanent password sharing. When a TV or device is away from the established Household, Netflix may ask for verification. A traveler can select I’m Traveling and request a temporary code sent to the account’s email address or phone number.
- Open Netflix on the away device when the verification prompt appears.
- Choose I’m Traveling rather than trying to change the Household for a short trip.
- Request the temporary code through the account email address or phone number.
- Enter the four-digit code promptly. Netflix says the code expires after 15 minutes.
- Continue watching on that device while the temporary authorization remains valid.
Netflix recommends opening the app while connected to the Household Wi-Fi at least once a month when possible. That regular connection helps establish that the account still belongs to the primary location and can reduce interruptions during later travel. Use a non-Kids profile for the I’m Traveling process, as Netflix’s travel guidance directs.
A travel code is a verification measure, not a standing license for another household. If a relative who lives elsewhere repeatedly needs access, compare an extra-member slot or a separate account instead of requesting codes indefinitely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Netflix says a TV is not part of the Household
The message usually means Netflix cannot associate the TV’s current internet connection or device signals with the Household last established at the main location. Common causes include:
- The TV is at a second home, hotel, rental or another person’s residence.
- The home internet service or router changed, so the TV is using a new IP address.
- The account holder replaced the main TV and has not updated the Household.
- The device is connected to a different network, such as a phone hotspot or guest Wi-Fi.
- An unfamiliar person is attempting to use the account and triggered verification.
Fixes for the account holder
- Identify which TV and home internet connection should be the primary Household.
- Connect that TV to the intended home network and choose Update Netflix Household from the TV’s Netflix menu.
- Review recently active devices in the account controls and sign out devices you do not recognize.
- If an unknown person requested or received a temporary code, change the Netflix password after signing out unfamiliar devices.
- Ask legitimate travelers to use the I’m Traveling procedure instead of updating the Household from a temporary location.
Updating the Household from the wrong address can shift the account’s reference location and create problems for the people who actually live with the owner. Do it only after confirming the primary home network.

Account-holder checklist before approving access
- Write down which television and internet connection define the primary Household.
- Check the plan name: ad-supported plans, some packages and third-party-billed accounts may not support extra members.
- Confirm the invited person will activate in the same country.
- Compare the recurring extra-member fee with a separate account, especially if the viewer needs multiple profiles or independent payment.
- Explain that an extra member has one profile and one supported simultaneous device.
- Keep the account email address and phone number current so travel verification codes reach the owner.
- Review active devices periodically and sign out anything unfamiliar.
- Change the password if an unknown person asks for a temporary code or if access appears on an unrecognized device.
How to decide in common situations
A spouse or child lives in the same home
Use a profile on the regular account. The person is part of the Household if their devices normally use the home internet connection. An extra-member purchase is unnecessary merely because another profile is wanted; the regular account supports up to five profiles.
A college student lives at another address
The student is outside the Household for Netflix purposes. Check whether the owner’s non-ad-supported Standard or Premium plan, country and billing method allow an extra member. If not, or if the student needs independent billing, use a separate account.
A family member is visiting for a week
Keep the Household unchanged. If Netflix requests verification on the visiting device, use I’m Traveling and enter the code before its 15-minute expiration. A short visit does not justify repeatedly changing the primary Household.
The account owner moved permanently
Connect the main TV to the new home internet service and use Update Netflix Household. Then review active devices so the account reflects the new primary location and old equipment is no longer authorized.
What can change over time
Netflix describes extra-member availability, prices and package restrictions by country and billing arrangement. The US prices listed above are a 2026 snapshot, not a promise of future rates. Before making a decision, open the account’s current plan and billing pages, check the displayed extra-member option, and confirm the invited viewer’s country. Those checks prevent a charge for a slot that cannot be activated or a surprise when taxes and package terms are applied.
