There is no single “best” stock among Nestlé India, Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and Britannia for every investor. They provide different exposures: HUL is the broadest consumer platform, Nestlé India is a focused food-and-beverage compounder, and Britannia is a concentrated packaged-food business. Your choice should follow the portfolio role you need, the price you pay, and your tolerance for category and execution risk—not brand familiarity alone.
The latest company disclosures provide a useful business comparison, but they do not establish synchronized market valuations. Check the current share price, market capitalization, valuation multiples and cash-flow data on the same date before deciding whether any of the three is attractively priced.

The short answer: three different FMCG exposures
| Company | Primary exposure | Portfolio character | Main questions to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nestlé India | Food and beverages | Focused category compounder | Can food categories keep growing, and does the valuation already reflect that quality? |
| Hindustan Unilever | Home care, beauty and personal care, foods and refreshment | Broad category platform | Can the portfolio convert distribution and premiumisation into volume growth across rural and urban markets? |
| Britannia Industries | Packaged foods, especially biscuits and adjacent categories | Concentrated packaged-food business | Can core-category execution, distribution and premium products offset commodity and concentration risk? |
For a diversified consumer allocation, HUL offers the widest mix of categories. Nestlé India gives a more focused bet on branded food and beverage consumption. Britannia offers direct exposure to packaged foods, with fewer businesses to offset a weak category or input-cost shock. None is automatically safer simply because it sells everyday products.

|---|---|---|---|

| Nestlé India, FY2025-26 | Revenue from operations: ₹231,546 million | Profit after tax: ₹35,446 million | Revenue up approximately 14.6%; PAT up approximately 6.9%, calculated from the company’s figures |
| HUL, FY2024-25 | Turnover: ₹60,680 crore | Profit after tax: ₹10,644 crore | Company described mid-single-digit absolute volume growth |
| HUL, FY2025-26 continuing operations | Turnover: ₹63,763 crore | Not stated in the cited continuing-operations summary | Underlying sales growth 5%; underlying volume growth 4% |
| Britannia, FY2024-25 consolidated | Revenue: ₹17,942.67 crore | Profit attributable to owners: ₹2,178.73 crore | Base year shown in the directors’ report |
| Britannia, FY2025-26 consolidated | Revenue: ₹19,151.59 crore | Profit attributable to owners: ₹2,533.49 crore | Revenue up approximately 6.7%; attributable profit up approximately 16.3%, calculated from reported figures |
Nestlé India cautions that its 2023-24 reporting period covered 15 months because the company changed its financial year. Comparisons that use that transition period as though it were a normal 12-month year can overstate or understate growth. The 2024-25 and 2025-26 figures above are therefore the cleaner pair for the specific comparison shown.
Business mix: breadth versus focus
HUL: three large operating platforms
HUL’s FY2024-25 segment disclosure shows revenue of ₹21,900 crore from Home Care, ₹22,165 crore from Beauty and Personal Care, and ₹15,292 crore from Foods and Refreshment. The reported segment margins were 18%, 26% and 19%, respectively.
| HUL FY2024-25 segment | Revenue | Reported segment margin | What the mix means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home Care | ₹21,900 crore | 18% | Large everyday-use categories with exposure to household budgets and input costs |
| Beauty and Personal Care | ₹22,165 crore | 26% | Higher reported margin in this disclosure, with premium and discretionary elements |
| Foods and Refreshment | ₹15,292 crore | 19% | Food and beverage participation without being the whole company |
The segment revenues do not add exactly to the ₹60,680 crore company turnover because segment reporting and corporate or eliminations can differ. The important portfolio point is diversification: weakness in one category does not automatically determine the result for the entire company. Diversification can also dilute a strong single-category cycle, so HUL may not behave like a pure food or pure personal-care stock.

Nestlé India: a concentrated food-and-beverage thesis
Nestlé India’s business is centered on food and beverages rather than a three-platform structure like HUL’s. That focus can make product innovation, distribution and premiumisation especially important: successful launches and stronger mix can move the whole company, while a problem in a major category has fewer internal businesses to offset it.

The company’s standalone revenue from operations rose from ₹202,016 million in 2024-25 to ₹231,546 million in 2025-26. PAT rose from ₹33,145 million to ₹35,446 million over the same reported periods. Revenue grew faster than PAT in this pair, a reminder to examine gross-margin movement, advertising, employee costs, depreciation, interest and any exceptional items rather than treating sales growth as equivalent to earnings growth.
Britannia: a concentrated packaged-food business
Britannia’s consolidated revenue increased to ₹19,151.59 crore in FY2025-26 from ₹17,942.67 crore in FY2024-25. Profit attributable to owners increased to ₹2,533.49 crore from ₹2,178.73 crore. The company describes growth support from core-category execution, e-commerce and other alternate channels, distribution improvements, innovation and premiumisation.
Because packaged foods are a larger part of Britannia’s identity than of HUL’s diversified portfolio, category execution matters more directly to the investment case. Concentration can make the business easier to understand, but it also leaves less diversification if biscuit or adjacent food demand, pricing or input costs move against the company.

HUL’s reported demand signals
HUL’s FY2024-25 shareholder communication said FMCG demand was subdued, rural demand was gradually improving and urban demand had moderated. It also reported mid-single-digit absolute volume growth and highlighted a ₹7,000 crore Market Makers portfolio that delivered strong double-digit growth. For FY2025-26 continuing operations, HUL reported 5% underlying sales growth and 4% underlying volume growth on ₹63,763 crore of turnover.

The one-percentage-point difference between underlying sales and volume growth is consistent with a contribution from pricing or mix, but the disclosure does not by itself quantify how much came from each factor. When reviewing later results, check whether growth is broad-based across categories or concentrated in price, premium products, acquisitions, disposals or accounting changes.
Nestlé India’s period and profit check
Nestlé’s 2023-24 15-month transition period makes calendar-style comparisons hazardous. Use the company’s normalised annual periods where possible, and check whether reported revenue growth is accompanied by comparable volume, operating profit and cash generation. The FY2024-25 to FY2025-26 revenue increase was approximately 14.6%, while PAT increased approximately 6.9%; that spread deserves an explanation in the annual report and results presentation before you infer a durable earnings trend.
Britannia’s growth supports and headwinds
Britannia identifies several operating levers: strengthening core categories, expanding e-commerce and distribution, launching or improving products, and moving consumers toward premium offerings. These can raise reach, mix and revenue per unit. The same report flags commodity inflation and geopolitical tensions as headwinds. A packaged-food investor should therefore track both demand indicators and the company’s ability to pass input-cost changes through without damaging volume.

| Risk or resilience factor | Nestlé India | HUL | Britannia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category breadth | Focused on food and beverages | Home Care, Beauty and Personal Care, Foods and Refreshment | Concentrated packaged foods |
| Rural and urban demand | Assess by category; no single company-wide conclusion follows from the supplied figures | Company reported improving rural demand and moderating urban demand in FY2024-25 | Demand is tied heavily to packaged-food consumption and channel execution |
| Input-cost sensitivity | Food and beverage commodities can affect margins | Varies by segment and formula; diversified mix can spread exposure | Commodity inflation is explicitly identified as a headwind |
| Premiumisation | Important lever in focused food and beverage categories | Can operate across personal care, home care and foods | One of management’s stated growth supports |
| Channel change | Distribution and new formats matter across food categories | Broad portfolio can use multiple channels | E-commerce and alternate channels are specifically highlighted |
Geopolitical tension is also identified in Britannia’s report as a headwind. For all three companies, do not assume that “defensive” consumer demand eliminates risk: consumers can trade down, delay discretionary purchases, switch pack sizes or reduce volumes when household budgets are pressured.

Valuation: the missing piece you must add
The cited disclosures do not establish synchronized current share prices, market capitalizations, price-to-earnings ratios, EV/EBITDA, dividend yields or free-cash-flow yields. Without those figures, a business comparison cannot tell you which stock is cheap, fairly valued or expensive today.
Build a same-date comparison using:
- Market capitalization and enterprise value, using the same share-count and net-debt definitions.
- Trailing and forward P/E, noting whether profit is consolidated, standalone, continuing operations or affected by exceptional items.
- EV/EBITDA, with a consistent treatment of leases and other obligations.
- Free cash flow and free-cash-flow yield, checked against working-capital movements and capital expenditure.
- Dividend per share and yield, distinguishing declared, paid and one-off distributions.
- Three- to five-year revenue, operating-profit, PAT, volume and cash-flow trends.
A premium multiple can be rational when growth, returns on capital and cash conversion justify it; it can also leave little room for a demand slowdown or margin disappointment. Compare each company’s valuation with its own historical range and with the growth and risk profile of the other two, rather than using a single sector-average multiple.

Choose the HUL type of exposure when breadth is the priority
HUL is the logical candidate to investigate if you want one holding spanning home care, beauty and personal care, and foods and refreshment. Its breadth can reduce dependence on one category, but you still need to test whether the current price compensates you for slower or uneven volume growth and for differences in segment margins.
Choose the Nestlé India type of exposure when focused food quality is the priority
Nestlé India may fit an investor who deliberately wants a food-and-beverage specialist and is comfortable with concentration in that theme. The key discipline is valuation: a focused, high-quality business can still produce a poor investment return if purchased at an excessive price. Verify that recent revenue growth is translating into sustainable profit and cash flow.

Choose the Britannia type of exposure when packaged-food focus is acceptable
Britannia may fit an investor seeking a concentrated packaged-food business with visible management levers in core categories, distribution, e-commerce, innovation and premiumisation. The trade-off is less category diversification and explicit sensitivity to commodity inflation and geopolitical conditions.
Use more than one only for a deliberate reason
Owning all three does not automatically create diversification. HUL’s foods and refreshment activities overlap thematically with the food specialists, while all three depend on Indian consumer demand, pricing execution and distribution. If you hold more than one, define the role of each holding and measure the combined exposure by category, not just by company name.
A practical comparison process before investing
- Set the portfolio job. Decide whether you need broad consumer exposure, focused food growth, dividend income, lower category concentration or a specific risk profile.
- Normalise the reporting periods. Exclude Nestlé India’s 15-month 2023-24 transition period from simple annual growth calculations, and distinguish HUL continuing operations from any discontinued or changed scope.
- Reconcile the profit measure. Use standalone versus consolidated figures consistently and investigate exceptional items, minority interests and one-time gains or losses.
- Separate volume from price and mix. Look for underlying volume growth, not only revenue. Check whether premiumisation is expanding margins or merely offsetting weak units.
- Review category and channel concentration. Map each company’s exposure to rural demand, urban demand, modern trade, general trade, e-commerce and major input commodities.
- Run a valuation sensitivity. Calculate expected return if earnings grow more slowly, the valuation multiple contracts, or both happen together.
- Define a monitoring rule. Track quarterly volume, margins, working capital, market share disclosures where available, debt, capital allocation and management’s stated risks.
- Size the position. Set a maximum allocation before purchase so a single category or company cannot dominate the portfolio unintentionally.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ranking by revenue alone: the reporting scopes and currencies differ, and scale does not equal shareholder return.
- Treating a one-year surge as a compounder proof: examine several normalised periods and cash conversion.
- Ignoring the 15-month Nestlé transition year: it distorts year-on-year comparisons.
- Calling HUL “fully diversified”: it has three major platforms, but all remain exposed to consumer demand and execution.
- Assuming Britannia’s focus is automatically a weakness: concentration can support sharper execution, but it raises the consequences of a category or input shock.
- Using an old P/E: FMCG valuations move with price and earnings estimates; refresh every input on the same date.
- Confusing sales growth with volume growth: price and mix can lift revenue while units stagnate.
- Making a purchase decision from brand familiarity: a trusted product does not guarantee an attractive entry valuation.
Bottom line for a portfolio decision
HUL is the broadest of the three businesses, Nestlé India is the focused food-and-beverage option, and Britannia is the concentrated packaged-food option. The disclosures show genuine differences in category mix, growth measures and stated risks, but they do not identify a universal winner or provide current valuation evidence. Match the business exposure to your portfolio objective, normalise the accounting periods, and then make the decision only after checking synchronized price, earnings and cash-flow metrics.
