Choose NEFT when a half-hourly batch process is acceptable, RTGS when you are sending ₹2 lakh or more and want continuous settlement, and IMPS when you need an around-the-clock instant transfer within your bank’s channel limit. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) set the system rules, but your bank can impose lower limits, different channel availability and its own charges.

NEFT vs RTGS vs IMPS at a glance

All three services move money between Indian bank accounts, including on weekends and public holidays. They differ mainly in how transactions settle, how quickly the beneficiary can receive credit, the minimum or maximum amount allowed, and the fees your bank may apply.

Feature NEFT RTGS IMPS
Settlement model Half-hourly batches; not transaction-by-transaction instant settlement Continuous, real-time, transaction-by-transaction settlement without netting Real-time retail transfer
Availability 24x7x365, including holidays 24x7x365, including holidays 24×7, including holidays
RBI/NPCI amount rule No RBI-wide maximum; a bank may set its own limit. Cash remittance by a person without a bank account is limited to ₹50,000 per transaction. Minimum ₹2 lakh; no RBI-set upper ceiling NPCI publishes ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR; bank and channel limits may be lower.
Typical use Routine transfers when a short processing window is fine Large-value transfers of ₹2 lakh or more where continuous settlement matters Urgent retail transfers when the amount and channel are eligible
Fee rule Online NEFT for savings-account holders should be free; other outward transactions are subject to RBI maximum bands, plus applicable GST. Inward transfers are free; RBI caps outward customer charges, with tax applicable where required. No single universal customer fee is established; check your bank and channel.

Which transfer is fastest?

IMPS for an eligible instant retail transfer

NPCI describes IMPS as an instant, real-time service available around the clock. If your bank permits the amount through the selected channel, the beneficiary normally receives the transfer without waiting for a scheduled batch. The published NPCI limit is ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR, but that figure must not be treated as a guarantee for every bank, customer profile or channel.

RTGS for continuous settlement of large payments

RTGS settles each transaction individually in real time. Under normal circumstances, the beneficiary branch receives the funds in real time, and the beneficiary bank must credit the account within 30 minutes after receiving the transfer message. This makes RTGS the clearest choice when the payment is at least ₹2 lakh and a continuous settlement rail is preferable.

NEFT when batch timing is acceptable

NEFT is available 24x7x365 but processes instructions in half-hourly batches. The RBI states that NEFT presently operates in batches at half-hourly intervals throughout the day. Credit can be expected within two hours from the relevant batch settlement, so NEFT is dependable for routine payments but is not transaction-by-transaction instant.

NEFT: limits, charges and processing time

How NEFT settlement works

Your bank accepts the instruction, places it in the next available processing cycle and sends it through the NEFT system. Because cycles run every 30 minutes, the transfer may wait for the next batch even when you submit it at night or on a holiday. After settlement, the receiving bank should credit the beneficiary within the RBI’s expected two-hour timeline.

If the destination account cannot be credited, the receiving bank should return the transaction within two hours of the batch’s completion. For credit or return delayed beyond that period, the RBI says the bank is liable to pay penal interest at the prevailing RBI Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) Repo Rate plus two percentage points, without requiring the customer to file a claim.

NEFT maximum transfer limit

The RBI’s NEFT FAQ, updated September 2, 2024, sets no system-wide amount limit. A participating bank may impose a customer or channel ceiling based on its risk assessment and board-approved policy. Therefore, the amount you can send from a mobile app may differ from the amount allowed through internet banking or at a branch.

There is one separate cash-remittance rule: a person without a bank account who uses the NEFT cash facility is limited to ₹50,000 per transaction. That limit applies to the cash-remittance facility, not to ordinary account-to-account NEFT initiated from a bank account.

NEFT charges

Inward NEFT is free. Banks have been advised not to charge savings-account holders for online NEFT transfers. For other outward NEFT transactions, the RBI’s maximum charges are shown below; GST may be added where applicable, and a bank may charge less or nothing.

Outward NEFT amount RBI maximum charge before applicable GST
Up to ₹10,000 ₹2.50
Above ₹10,000 and up to ₹1 lakh ₹5
Above ₹1 lakh and up to ₹2 lakh ₹15
Above ₹2 lakh ₹25

These are ceilings under the RBI framework, not a universal price list. Your bank’s current schedule determines whether a particular account, branch instruction or non-savings account is charged.

RTGS: minimum amount, upper ceiling and fees

RTGS minimum and maximum

The RBI’s RTGS FAQ, updated October 31, 2022, states that the minimum amount is ₹2,00,000 and there is no upper or maximum ceiling set by the RBI. A bank can still apply internal risk controls, customer-level limits or channel caps, so a very large transfer may require advance confirmation or a branch process.

Because RTGS has a ₹2 lakh minimum, it is not suitable for a smaller bill, salary payment or routine transfer. For amounts below that threshold, use NEFT or an eligible IMPS channel instead.

RTGS timing

RTGS is available 24x7x365. It settles continuously rather than waiting for a netted batch. In normal circumstances, the beneficiary branch receives the funds in real time; the receiving bank is required to credit the beneficiary account within 30 minutes of receiving the transfer message.

RTGS charges

Inward RTGS transactions are free. For outward customer transactions, the RBI framework caps the charge at ₹25 for transfers from ₹2 lakh up to ₹5 lakh and ₹50 for transfers above ₹5 lakh, exclusive of tax where applicable. Banks may set lower charges. Check the amount shown on the confirmation screen or the bank’s tariff for your account and channel.

IMPS: instant transfers, limits and bank-specific pricing

IMPS limit

NPCI’s IMPS product overview publishes a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for all channels except SMS and IVR. SMS and IVR therefore cannot be assumed to support that amount. In addition, your bank may set a lower daily or per-transaction ceiling, and a particular account type may have different permissions.

Look for the limit in the bank’s current mobile-banking or internet-banking terms immediately before sending. A transfer that is allowed through one channel may be rejected through another even when both use IMPS.

IMPS fees

There is no single universal IMPS customer fee established by the NPCI overview. Banks can price IMPS differently by account, amount, channel and subscription package. Some channels may be free while others carry a charge, and GST may apply. Use the fee displayed by your bank or its latest schedule rather than relying on a generic online figure.

When IMPS is the right choice

Use IMPS when the recipient needs the money immediately, the transfer is within the applicable bank and channel limit, and you have verified the beneficiary details. If the amount exceeds the permitted IMPS ceiling, split transfers only if your bank allows it and the recipient accepts that arrangement; otherwise choose RTGS or NEFT based on amount and urgency.

How to choose the right rail

Step 1: Confirm the amount

  1. If the transfer is ₹2 lakh or more and you want continuous settlement, consider RTGS.
  2. If it is below ₹2 lakh, RTGS is unavailable under the RBI minimum; compare NEFT with IMPS.
  3. For any amount, check the bank’s own limit because it can be lower than the system rule.

Step 2: Decide how quickly the beneficiary must receive credit

  1. Choose IMPS for an eligible instant transfer.
  2. Choose RTGS for a qualifying large-value payment that benefits from continuous settlement and the 30-minute credit requirement after message receipt.
  3. Choose NEFT when waiting for a half-hourly batch and the RBI’s two-hour post-settlement expectation is acceptable.

Step 3: Compare the actual charge

Open the bank’s fee preview or tariff for the exact account and channel. NEFT savings-account transfers made online should not be charged, while other NEFT and RTGS fees are subject to RBI ceilings. IMPS pricing has no universal figure in the NPCI overview, so the bank’s displayed charge is decisive.

Step 4: Check availability and cut-offs in your channel

All three systems operate beyond normal branch hours, but a bank may disable a feature temporarily, restrict a channel, require additional authentication or apply a lower limit to newly added beneficiaries. A branch, app and internet-banking portal can therefore show different options.

Beneficiary verification: the check that prevents most irreversible mistakes

For NEFT and RTGS, credit is based on the beneficiary account number in the payment instruction. The bank does not rely solely on the name you type. Enter and independently verify the account number, IFSC, bank, branch and beneficiary name before authorising the transfer.

RBI’s December 30, 2024 notification directed participant banks to provide a free account-name lookup facility for NEFT and RTGS no later than April 1, 2025. The feature uses the account number and IFSC to retrieve the name from the beneficiary bank’s core banking system. Check whether your bank exposes the lookup in its app, internet-banking flow or branch. If no name is returned, the RBI notification allows the remitter to proceed at their discretion; treat that as a reason to recheck the details, not as confirmation that the account is safe.

What to do when a transfer is delayed, rejected or returned

NEFT is still pending

Note the submission time and transaction reference, then check whether the instruction entered the next half-hourly batch. If the expected two-hour period from batch settlement has passed, contact the sending bank and ask it to trace the transaction. The receiving bank should either credit or return an uncreditable transfer within the prescribed timeline.

RTGS has not been credited

Confirm that the transfer was accepted and obtain the UTR or bank reference. The beneficiary bank must credit within 30 minutes after receiving the RTGS message under normal circumstances. Ask the sending bank to initiate a status enquiry if the recipient still has no credit after that period.

IMPS shows success but the recipient cannot see funds

Do not send a duplicate immediately. Check the transaction status in the originating channel, verify the recipient’s account details and contact your bank with the reference number. A displayed debit, a pending status and a final successful settlement are different states, so rely on the bank’s status rather than a screenshot from the recipient alone.

The transfer was sent to wrong details

Contact your bank at once and provide the reference number, amount, date and incorrect beneficiary details. Recovery depends on whether the receiving account can be identified and whether the funds remain there; none of these rails guarantees reversal after a valid account number has been credited.

Examples: which service fits?

Situation Most suitable starting point Reason
₹35,000 rent payment due tonight IMPS, if your channel permits it; otherwise NEFT IMPS is instant when eligible; NEFT works around the clock but may wait for a batch.
₹1.5 lakh school-fee payment needed today IMPS or NEFT RTGS cannot be used below its ₹2 lakh minimum. Choose IMPS for urgency or NEFT when batch timing is acceptable.
₹3 lakh property-related payment RTGS The amount meets the RTGS minimum and continuous settlement is useful.
₹8 lakh business payment with no immediate deadline RTGS or NEFT RTGS has no RBI-set upper ceiling; NEFT has no RBI-wide maximum, but the bank’s own limit and the required timing decide the choice.
Transfer from a channel that supports only SMS or IVR Check the bank’s IMPS limit, or use NEFT/RTGS if available The NPCI ₹5 lakh IMPS figure does not apply universally to SMS and IVR.

Bank-level limits and conditions to verify

RBI and NPCI rules describe the payment rails, not every customer’s entitlement. Before sending, verify:

  • per-transaction and daily limits for your account;
  • whether the beneficiary is subject to a cooling-off period after addition;
  • which channels support NEFT, RTGS and IMPS;
  • the exact fee and GST treatment shown by that channel;
  • authentication requirements, such as transaction passwords or additional-factor approval;
  • maintenance windows, fraud blocks or risk reviews that could delay a high-value transfer.

These details can change, so use the bank’s current schedule and on-screen confirmation rather than an old fee chart.

A practical pre-send checklist

  1. Write down the amount and the latest acceptable arrival time.
  2. Match that need to the rail: IMPS for eligible instant retail transfers, RTGS for ₹2 lakh or more requiring continuous settlement, NEFT for flexible timing.
  3. Confirm your bank’s channel limit and displayed charge.
  4. Use the account-name lookup where available, then independently check account number and IFSC.
  5. Review the final confirmation page before entering the one-time password or approving the transaction.
  6. Keep the UTR or reference number until the beneficiary confirms receipt.

Bottom line

There is no single winner. IMPS is the speed-first option when your bank and channel allow the amount. RTGS is designed for transfers of ₹2 lakh or more that benefit from continuous settlement and has no RBI-set upper ceiling. NEFT is the flexible, 24×7 option when half-hourly batches and the associated credit timeline are acceptable. Fees, daily limits and available channels remain bank-specific, so verify those details at the moment you send.
