National Rental Credits reportedly do not expire. They are not the same as an issued Free Day, however. After you accumulate enough credits and convert them, the standard Free Day is valid through December 31 of the following calendar year. Promotional Free Days can use different deadlines, booking windows, geographic limits, or other conditions. Because the exact date belongs to the reward in your account, check its displayed terms before planning a rental.
Credits and Free Days are two different rewards
National’s Emerald Club program has a two-stage process. You first collect Rental Credits from qualifying rentals. Later, when your balance reaches the threshold for your membership tier, those credits are converted into a Free Day. The expiration rule changes at that point.

These thresholds explain why a credit balance and a Free Day should not be treated as interchangeable. A balance can remain available while you wait to reach the relevant threshold; once a Free Day is issued, it receives a separate validity period. Membership status, rental eligibility, and any current program changes can affect the result, so use the terms shown for your account when a precise calculation matters.
When a standard earned Free Day expires
For the standard reward described in the National FAQ quotation, the clock is based on the calendar year after the Free Day is earned. A Free Day earned during 2026 would therefore be valid through December 31, 2027, assuming the standard rule applies and no different date is displayed for that reward.

The deadline is not described as a rolling number of months from the rental date. It is a fixed end-of-year cutoff tied to the following calendar year. That distinction matters when you earn a reward late in the year: a Free Day issued in December has a shorter practical redemption window than one issued in January, even though both use the same calendar-year rule.

AwardWallet reports that an expired standard Free Day cannot be reinstated. The reported rule concerns the issued Free Day, not the underlying unconverted credits. Do not assume that allowing a Free Day to lapse will return credits to your account; verify the program’s current terms or contact National before relying on that outcome.
Promotional Free Days can have different terms
Promotions are separate offers, so their dates should be read independently from the standard earned-reward rule. A useful example is National’s ONE TWO FREE promotion reported by Upgraded Points. That offer required registration and qualifying rentals made between April 6 and June 7, 2026. Its promotional Free Days were usable in the United States and Canada and had a December 31, 2026 expiration.
Upgraded Points updated its report on June 8, 2026, after the offer’s qualifying period had ended. It is therefore an example of how a promotion can work, not an active offer. The example demonstrates three points that apply broadly to promotional rewards:

- Registration may be required before a qualifying rental.
- The earning or booking period can be narrower than the period in which the reward may be used.
- Geography can be restricted; in this example, redemption was limited to the United States and Canada.
Other promotions may impose different vehicle classes, rental lengths, pickup locations, blackout dates, booking channels, or use-by dates. A promotional Free Day should be treated as its own contract. The date and restrictions displayed with that reward take priority over assumptions based on a standard Free Day.
How to find the expiration date for your reward
Your account is the only place that can show the date attached to your particular Free Day. Use this process whenever you are unsure which rule applies:
- Sign in to your National Emerald Club account. Use the membership account connected to the rentals that earned the reward.
- Open the rewards or Free Days area. National’s labels can change, so look for the page showing your Rental Credit balance and any issued certificates or Free Days.
- Separate the balance from the issued reward. A numeric credit balance is not itself an issued Free Day. Select the individual Free Day or certificate to see its details.
- Read the displayed expiration date and restrictions. Record the date exactly as shown, along with any country, location, vehicle, or booking conditions.
- Check whether the reward is promotional. Look for an offer name, registration requirement, qualifying rental dates, or a separate terms link. Those indicators mean the standard calendar-year assumption may not apply.
- Match the date to your reservation plan. A reservation must satisfy the reward’s redemption rules, not merely be made before the expiration date. Allow time for changes, cancellations, and any required confirmation.
If the account page does not show a date, contact National through the support channel associated with your Emerald Club membership and ask which terms govern the specific reward number or certificate. Keep a copy of the displayed terms or confirmation for your records, especially when the rental will occur near year-end.
What happens if you wait too long?
Unused Rental Credits
Under the FAQ wording quoted by AwardWallet, Rental Credits do not expire. That means a member can generally continue accumulating credits without a routine annual forfeiture date while they remain unconverted. The statement does not establish that every promotional credit, bonus, or adjustment is permanent; an offer can attach its own conditions.

AwardWallet reports that expired Free Days cannot be reinstated. Once the listed date has passed, the reward should be considered unavailable unless National makes an exception under current policy. Because the reported rule does not promise a return of the credits used for conversion, plan to redeem before the deadline rather than relying on a later reversal.

A promotional reward with a different deadline
For a promotional Free Day, the offer terms control. A reward can expire in the same calendar year in which it was earned, as the 2026 ONE TWO FREE example illustrates. It can also be restricted to particular countries or rental conditions. If the account and the original promotion appear inconsistent, save both records and ask National to clarify before booking.
Planning around the calendar-year rule
Members who earn a standard Free Day near the end of a year should treat the following December 31 as a hard planning boundary. Consider the complete rental timeline, including the date by which the reward must be booked or used, rather than waiting until the last week of the year. Availability at the desired location may be limited even when the certificate itself remains valid.
Members with several credits can also choose whether to keep accumulating or trigger a Free Day when the threshold is reached, depending on the program’s conversion process and account options. The available terms establish the threshold figures reported above but do not establish a universal rule for every conversion interface. Review the choices presented in your account before confirming a conversion.
- Set a reminder several months before the displayed expiration date.
- Use the reward details page to verify eligible countries and vehicle or location restrictions.
- Do not rely on a reservation made through an ineligible channel to preserve the reward.
- Recheck the certificate after changing or canceling a reservation.
- Keep screenshots or confirmation emails when the deadline is close.

When deciding whether a reward is still usable, compare the same facts for each option:

For that reason, use the published figures as a guide to how the program has been reported, not as a substitute for the reward-specific terms in your account. The displayed expiration date, promotion conditions, and current National support response are the appropriate checks before you commit money or travel plans.
