Nasdaq-100 vs S&P 500: Differences in Holdings, Diversification, and Risk

Short answer: The S&P 500 is the broader core benchmark, holding 500 leading U.S. companies across major sectors and covering about 80% of available U.S. market capitalization. The Nasdaq-100 holds 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, with a much heavier technology and growth orientation. That focus can produce stronger results when technology leads, but it also creates greater sensitivity to growth-stock valuations, interest rates and a smaller group of industries. Both indexes are dominated by mega-cap companies, so neither is perfectly diversified.

What is the difference between the Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500?

The two indexes represent different ways to own large U.S. companies:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Nasdaq-100: 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Its modified market-capitalization methodology gives the biggest companies the largest weights, subject to concentration limits.
  • S&P 500: 500 leading U.S. companies selected to represent the broad domestic large-cap market. It uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting and includes financial companies and all other major sectors.

The S&P 500 is generally the better starting point for a single U.S. large-cap holding because it spreads exposure across more companies and industries. The Nasdaq-100 is a deliberate tilt toward large-cap growth and innovation. It can complement a diversified portfolio, but it is less suitable as a complete replacement for broad U.S. equity exposure when you already own substantial technology stocks.

What does each index hold?

Nasdaq-100 holdings

The Nasdaq-100 excludes financial companies and selects 100 of the largest eligible non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. Technology is its dominant sector, followed by consumer discretionary and healthcare. The index is not a pure technology index: companies in communications, consumer, industrial and other eligible industries can also qualify. Its identity comes from the combination of Nasdaq listing, large size, non-financial status and a strong growth orientation.

Nasdaq describes the Nasdaq-100 as “100 of the most innovative large cap companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market,” a description that emphasizes its growth and innovation profile rather than a guarantee that every constituent is a technology business.

Nasdaq uses modified market-cap weighting rather than giving every constituent an equal share. A company with a larger market value normally receives a larger index weight, but methodology caps limit the influence of individual securities and groups of high-weight securities. The index is reviewed quarterly and reconstituted annually in December.

S&P 500 holdings

The S&P 500 includes 500 leading U.S. companies and covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization. S&P Dow Jones Indices calls it a broad cross-section of the U.S. equity market. The index page showed 503 securities as of August 31, 2026, because some companies have multiple share classes; the nominal company count remains 500.

Eligibility and committee decisions consider sector representation as well as company size, liquidity and other index requirements. The resulting portfolio spans information technology, communication services, consumer discretionary, consumer staples, healthcare, financials, industrials, energy, utilities, materials and real estate. That breadth gives the S&P 500 exposure to business models that the Nasdaq-100 deliberately excludes, particularly banks, insurers and other financial companies.

How are the indexes constructed and rebalanced?

Feature Nasdaq-100 S&P 500
Constituents 100 companies 500 companies; 503 securities were displayed on August 31, 2026 because of multiple share classes
Eligibility Large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq Leading U.S. companies selected for broad large-cap representation
Financial companies Excluded Included
Weighting Modified market-cap weighting with concentration caps Float-adjusted market-cap weighting
Routine review Quarterly rebalancing Quarterly rebalancing in March, June, September and December
Annual membership review Annual December reconstitution Committee-maintained index; changes are not limited to a single annual reconstitution
Recent methodology note Changes to constituent selection and low-float weighting became effective May 1, 2026 No comparable change is specified here

Methodology dates matter. A fund tracking an index follows the rules in force at the time, so constituents and weights can change even when the fund name stays the same. The Nasdaq-100 changes that took effect May 1, 2026 altered parts of constituent selection and low-float weighting while preserving the 100-company, non-financial objective. A historical holdings list may therefore differ from a current one for reasons beyond ordinary share-price moves.

Quarterly rebalancing also means weights can be reset during the year. Annual reconstitution is the larger membership review for the Nasdaq-100; it should not be confused with a promise that the same 100 companies will remain in the index indefinitely.

Which index is more diversified?

By company count and sector coverage, the S&P 500 is more diversified. Five hundred companies provide more individual business exposures than 100, and the S&P 500 includes financials, energy, utilities, real estate and other sectors absent or less prominent in the Nasdaq-100.

That does not make the S&P 500 a fully diversified portfolio. It remains a U.S. large-cap index, with no dedicated small-cap or international allocation. Its market-cap weighting also directs a substantial share of assets to the biggest companies.

The Nasdaq-100 offers targeted rather than broad diversification. You get exposure to 100 companies, but many are in related growth-sensitive industries. A portfolio can therefore own numerous securities while still depending heavily on technology earnings, innovation spending and long-term growth expectations.

Diversification question Nasdaq-100 S&P 500
More companies? No; 100 Yes; 500 companies
Includes financials? No Yes
Sector breadth Concentrated in technology, consumer discretionary and healthcare, with other sectors represented Broad exposure across all major U.S. sectors
International exposure Not a global index; constituents are Nasdaq-listed and generally U.S.-focused Not a global index; it is a U.S. large-cap benchmark
Small-company exposure None by design Very limited; the index targets large companies

The S&P 500’s roughly 80% market-cap coverage is a statement about the breadth of the eligible U.S. large-cap market, not a claim that it owns 80% of every global stock market. Investors seeking complete diversification still need to consider international equities, smaller companies and other asset classes separately.

How concentrated are the Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500?

Both indexes are market-cap oriented, so the largest companies matter disproportionately. The S&P 500 page reported that its 10 largest constituents represented 37.8% of the index and that the largest constituent represented 8.1% as of August 31, 2026. Those figures show that owning 500 names does not mean owning 500 similarly sized positions.

The Nasdaq-100 applies caps to individual securities and groups of high-weight constituents. These rules reduce the risk that one company or a small cluster overwhelms the index, but they do not remove concentration. The index still has only 100 constituents and a pronounced technology and growth tilt.

Overlap between the indexes is substantial. At year-end 2025, Nasdaq reported that Nasdaq-100 companies represented slightly more than half of the S&P 500’s total market capitalization and that the average Nasdaq-100 company was approximately three times as large. Large holdings appearing in both benchmarks included Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Broadcom, Meta, Micron and Tesla. Buying both funds can therefore increase exposure to the same mega-cap businesses rather than doubling diversification.

Overlap should be measured by portfolio weight, not just by counting repeated tickers. A shared mega-cap may represent a modest position in one fund but a much larger combined position after both funds are purchased. Review the latest holdings files and add the weights of repeated companies before deciding that a second fund adds a new source of risk.

Is the Nasdaq-100 riskier than the S&P 500?

Neither index has a permanent risk ranking, but the Nasdaq-100 has several structural reasons to experience larger swings when growth stocks or technology leadership weaken. The S&P 500 has broader sector exposure, which can make its returns less dependent on one economic theme, although its mega-cap concentration remains material.

Sector risk

Technology and consumer-discretionary companies respond to industry-specific forces such as semiconductor cycles, cloud and artificial-intelligence spending, advertising demand and consumer credit conditions. A setback concentrated in those industries can affect a large portion of the Nasdaq-100 at once. The S&P 500’s financial, energy, utility, industrial and consumer-staples holdings provide different earnings drivers, although diversification cannot prevent a broad market decline.

Valuation and interest-rate risk

Growth companies derive more of their valuation from profits expected years in the future. When interest rates or required returns rise, those future cash flows are discounted more heavily, which can pressure share prices even when current revenue is growing. This is an analytical implication of the Nasdaq-100’s composition, not a guaranteed result in every rate cycle.

Concentration risk

The Nasdaq-100’s caps moderate single-stock dominance, while the S&P 500’s top 10 still accounted for 37.8% as of August 31, 2026. Investors should evaluate both the index-level concentration and the concentration already present elsewhere in their accounts.

Broad equity risk

Both are stock indexes. They can suffer substantial drawdowns, and neither is a cash substitute or a guarantee of positive returns. The S&P 500’s wider sector mix does not protect against recessions, valuation compression or a broad decline in U.S. equities.

What does recent performance show?

Nasdaq reported a 21% Nasdaq-100 total return for 2025, three percentage points above the S&P 500. Technology averaged 61% of Nasdaq-100 weight that year and drove 88% of the index’s 2025 return.

Those figures illustrate how sector leadership can dominate a single year’s result: when technology performs exceptionally well, a concentrated index can pull ahead. They do not establish a forward return forecast, and they should not be used to assume that the Nasdaq-100 will outperform in the next year. A matched-period historical volatility or maximum-drawdown comparison is not stated in the index facts used here, so investors should obtain consistent, same-period data before making a quantitative risk comparison.

When comparing performance, use total returns for both indexes or funds, the same measurement dates and the same currency. Check whether a fund’s published return is before or after expenses and whether distributions are reinvested. A price-return chart for one benchmark compared with a total-return chart for another can create a misleading impression of relative performance.

How should you compare a Nasdaq-100 ETF with an S&P 500 fund?

An index label is only the starting point. The fund you actually buy determines your expenses, tax reporting, trading experience and how closely your return follows the benchmark.

Fund factor What to check Why it matters
Expense ratio Current annual fee in the prospectus A higher fee creates a persistent drag on returns
Tracking difference Fund return minus index return over several periods Reveals the real effect of fees, trading costs, sampling and cash management
Liquidity Bid-ask spread, trading volume and assets Important for frequent trades and larger orders; liquidity is fund-specific
Structure ETF or mutual fund, creation/redemption process and distribution policy Affects trading flexibility and how transactions are handled
Taxes Account type, local rules, distributions and capital-gain treatment The same index can produce different after-tax results in different jurisdictions and accounts
Availability Whether your brokerage or retirement plan offers the fund A theoretically ideal fund is unusable if you cannot buy it at reasonable cost
Index version Exact benchmark name and methodology date Similar-sounding products can track different versions or use different weighting rules

Fees, tax treatment, liquidity and product availability are not fixed properties of the indexes. Read the specific fund’s prospectus and recent holdings report rather than assuming that every Nasdaq-100 ETF or S&P 500 index fund is interchangeable.

Also distinguish an ETF’s market price from its net asset value. Temporary premiums or discounts, bid-ask spreads and the timing of dividend payments can affect the result of a short holding period even when long-run index tracking is close. For a retirement account or taxable account, confirm whether the fund distributes gains and how your jurisdiction treats those distributions before investing.

Which is better for a core portfolio?

Choose an S&P 500 fund when breadth is the priority

  • You want one U.S. large-cap holding with broad sector representation.
  • You want financials and other sectors excluded from the Nasdaq-100.
  • You already have significant technology exposure through employment, individual stocks or another fund.
  • You prefer a benchmark designed to represent most of the U.S. large-cap market rather than a growth-specific segment.

Choose a Nasdaq-100 fund when the tilt is intentional

  • You specifically want large-cap growth and innovation exposure.
  • You accept greater dependence on technology, consumer-discretionary and healthcare companies.
  • You understand that the index can be sensitive to growth valuations and interest-rate changes.
  • You have checked your other holdings and are comfortable with overlap in mega-cap names.

Use both only for a deliberate allocation

Combining the indexes can add a growth tilt to a broad U.S. core, but it does not create a simple 600-company portfolio with 600 independent risks. The same mega-cap companies may receive extra weight in both funds. Decide the desired overall technology and mega-cap allocation first, then set percentages that match your risk tolerance and rebalance plan.

A practical selection process

  1. List your existing exposure. Include employer stock, individual shares, retirement funds and sector funds. Identify how much is already tied to the largest technology and consumer companies.
  2. Define the job of the new holding. Decide whether it is your broad U.S. core, a growth satellite, or a replacement for another overlapping fund.
  3. Verify the benchmark. Confirm whether the product tracks the Nasdaq-100 or S&P 500, the exact index version, and whether the fund is fully replicated or sampled.
  4. Compare current costs. Review the expense ratio, trading spread, transaction fees and historical tracking difference.
  5. Check tax and account rules. Determine how dividends, capital gains and foreign withholding (if applicable) are treated in your country and account type.
  6. Set a rebalancing rule. Choose a calendar schedule or a percentage band before buying so that a strong technology run does not silently change your intended risk.
  7. Review periodically. Recheck holdings, methodology changes, costs and your personal exposure; do not assume a fund’s composition is permanent.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the Nasdaq-100 a pure technology index. It contains other sectors, but technology is dominant.
  • Assuming 500 stocks means no concentration. The S&P 500’s top 10 were 37.8% of the index on August 31, 2026.
  • Treating a recent outperformance year as a forecast. The Nasdaq-100’s 2025 result reflected unusually strong technology leadership.
  • Buying both funds without checking overlap. Shared mega-cap holdings can increase, rather than reduce, concentration.
  • Comparing labels instead of funds. Expense ratios, tracking quality, spreads, taxes and access differ by product.
  • Using either index as a complete global portfolio. Both are U.S. large-cap benchmarks and do not supply dedicated international or broad small-cap exposure.
  • Ignoring methodology dates. Constituents, low-float treatment and weighting rules can change, so an old fact sheet may not describe the fund you can buy today.

Bottom line for investors

For most investors seeking one broad U.S. equity core, the S&P 500 offers the stronger diversification starting point because it holds more companies, includes financials and spans all major sectors. The Nasdaq-100 is a focused large-cap growth allocation: potentially rewarding when technology leads, but more exposed to sector concentration, valuation changes and interest-rate sensitivity. Select the fund—not merely the index name—after checking its costs, tracking difference, taxes, liquidity and overlap with what you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nasdaq-100 more risky than the S&P 500?

It can be, particularly when technology and growth valuations weaken, because its 100-company universe is more sector-concentrated. The S&P 500 is broader but still has meaningful mega-cap concentration, so neither index has a permanently lower risk level.

Which index is more diversified?

The S&P 500 is more diversified by company count and sector coverage. It includes financials and other major industries that the Nasdaq-100 excludes or represents less heavily. Neither provides dedicated global or broad small-cap exposure.

Does the Nasdaq-100 contain only technology companies?

No. Technology is the dominant sector, but consumer-discretionary, healthcare, communications, industrial and other eligible companies can also be included. Financial companies are excluded.

What is the difference between a Nasdaq-100 ETF and an S&P 500 fund?

A Nasdaq-100 ETF targets 100 large non-financial Nasdaq-listed companies with a growth and technology tilt. An S&P 500 fund targets 500 leading U.S. companies across major sectors. Compare each fund’s current fee, tracking difference, liquidity, taxes and availability rather than relying on the index label alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I hold both indexes?

Yes, if the allocation is deliberate. Their shared mega-cap holdings mean owning both can increase technology and large-company exposure instead of creating 600 independent risks. Review combined weights and set a rebalancing rule.

How often do these indexes change?

Both are reviewed and rebalanced quarterly. The Nasdaq-100 also has an annual December reconstitution. Its 2026 methodology changes to constituent selection and low-float weighting became effective May 1, 2026; rules and holdings can change again.

Did the Nasdaq-100 outperform the S&P 500 in 2025?

Nasdaq reported a 21% Nasdaq-100 total return in 2025, three percentage points above the S&P 500. Technology averaged 61% of Nasdaq-100 weight and drove 88% of that year’s return. This is historical evidence, not a forecast.

Are either index a complete portfolio?

No. Both are U.S. large-cap equity benchmarks. They do not provide dedicated international stocks, broad small-cap exposure, bonds or cash, and both can experience substantial drawdowns.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Use an S&P 500 fund for broader U.S. large-cap diversification; use a Nasdaq-100 fund for an intentional growth and technology tilt. Check overlap, concentration, fees, tracking difference, taxes and fund availability before investing.
