For an Australian shopper in 2026, Myer is the better-supported choice on overall customer satisfaction, but there is no reliable evidence that it delivers better service than David Jones. Canstar Blue named Myer its 2026 department-store satisfaction winner after surveying 2,348 Australians. The result combines six measures, including service, value, range, store presentation, website presentation and checkout; it is not a customer-service league table.
David Jones remains positioned as a premium omnichannel retailer and has identified a seamless service experience as a strategic aim. That is a stated intention, not proof of what every customer experiences. The practical winner depends on the brands and price level you need, the nearest usable store, online fulfilment and returns, loyalty value, and how effectively staff solve your particular problem.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say
The strongest independent result available for this comparison is Canstar Blue’s 2026 overall department-store award. Canstar Blue reported the 2026 award in April 2026, based on results finalised in March 2026. Respondents rated a department store they had bought from during the previous six months on a zero-to-10 scale. Canstar Blue’s published results cover 2,348 Australians from PureProfile’s accredited online panel, and a brand needed at least 30 responses to be included.

Myer received the overall award. That means its combined performance across the survey’s criteria was strongest; it does not establish that Myer won on customer service alone. The accessible results do not publish a service-only comparative score for Myer and David Jones.
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | What is established | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Overall satisfaction | Myer was Canstar Blue’s 2026 winner. | A useful broad signal, not a guarantee for every store or transaction. |
| Customer service | Canstar Blue defines it as whether “staff are available, helpful, resolve problems effectively”; a retailer-by-retailer service score is not stated in the accessible results. | Judge the branch, department and situation you actually use. |
| Survey coverage | 2,348 Australians who had bought from a department store in the previous six months. | Recent customer experience is represented, but it is still a sample rather than every shopper. |
| Criteria | Value for money; customer service; store layout and presentation; website layout and presentation; checkout experience; product range. | Overall satisfaction reflects several parts of the shopping journey. |
That distinction matters because a shopper can prefer David Jones for a particular luxury counter or specialist adviser while still rating Myer’s total experience higher. Conversely, a smooth Myer online order does not prove that a different Myer location will resolve a warranty or fitting problem well.
Which store fits your shopping mission?
Service when you need advice or a fix
Service is most valuable when the purchase is complex, expensive, time-sensitive or likely to need after-sales help. Examples include finding the right clothing fit, choosing a beauty product, arranging a delivery, checking stock across channels, processing an exchange or resolving a faulty item.
For those jobs, test observable behaviours rather than relying on a brand promise. Can an employee be found without a long search? Do they understand the product rather than simply point to a shelf? Can they check stock or an order accurately? Do they explain the return or warranty path and take ownership when another team must act? Those questions map closely to Canstar Blue’s definition, but the survey does not tell you which chain performs better on each one.

Myer’s FY25 strategy used the phrase “A seamless and engaging experience in-store and online” for its omnichannel network. Both are company statements of direction. Neither is an independent service measurement, and the David Jones statement is historical rather than a current guarantee.

Range, brands and price positioning
Myer describes a broad general-merchandise offer spanning women’s and men’s fashion, children’s clothing, beauty and cosmetics, homewares, electronics and toys. Its investor material describes more than 50 Myer department stores. That breadth can make it efficient for a household buying several categories in one trip, particularly when a loyalty offer or a single delivery matters.
David Jones presents itself as a premium omnichannel retailer. Premium positioning can be an advantage when you are seeking a particular designer, beauty house or higher-service environment, but it may also mean a higher starting price or a narrower choice at a given budget. Do not infer that one chain is cheaper overall: compare the exact item, model, colour, size, delivery charge and return conditions.
Loyalty and value for money
Myer’s FY26 annual report says approximately 5.3 million active MYER one members. That is evidence of scale, not proof that the programme gives every shopper better value. The relevant calculation is personal: how much you spend in eligible categories, how quickly rewards can be redeemed, whether points or vouchers expire, and whether a promotion changes the effective price.

Store, website and fulfilment convenience
Canstar Blue treated store presentation, website presentation and checkout as separate satisfaction criteria. That is a useful reminder to examine the whole journey. Before committing to a purchase, check whether your local branch carries the item, whether the online stock indicator refers to that branch or a distribution centre, how long delivery or collection takes, and what happens if the item is unavailable.
Convenience also includes accessibility, opening hours, parking or public transport, fitting-room availability and the time required to return an online order. A retailer with a slightly higher ticket price can be cheaper in practice if it avoids a second trip or a paid return. These details vary by location and change frequently, so verify them for the specific order rather than relying on a national claim.
Checkout and returns
A low-friction checkout is particularly important for split payments, gift cards, loyalty rewards and concession items. Ask whether a purchase made online can be returned in store, whether a concession partner applies its own policy, and who handles a damaged or incorrect delivery. Keep the order confirmation and product condition evidence until the return window has closed.
What the companies’ numbers mean for shoppers
Financial scale can affect store investment, stock depth and digital systems, but the figures for these businesses are not directly comparable on the evidence available.
Rank #4
| Business signal | Published figure or statement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Myer Group FY26 sales | A$4,088.8 million, up 11.3% from restated FY25. | Myer Group’s period ended 25 July 2026. The measure covers Myer Retail and Myer Apparel Brands, includes concession-holder sales, and is not department-store-only revenue. |
| Myer loyalty base | Approximately 5.3 million active MYER one members. | Company-reported membership scale; it does not measure reward value or service quality per member. |
| David Jones trading update | A 325% increase in EBITDA for the nine months ending March 2026 was disclosed. | Inside Retail reported that no base reference point was provided, so the percentage does not reveal absolute earnings or prove sustained profitability. |
| David Jones concession portfolio | 100 of 283 Country Road Group concession stands were slated for removal. | Reported by Inside Retail on 7 October 2026; it signals a partner-portfolio change, not a direct service or satisfaction result. |
Myer’s FY26 report describes a group combining department stores, specialty apparel brands and a digital or marketplace offer. Its strategy links customers and loyalty, curated brands, an integrated store-and-digital network, and sourcing and supply-chain efficiency. Those investments may support availability and convenience, but the report does not prove that every department has improved service.
David Jones’s available 2026 disclosure is a partial trading update rather than a full-year report aligned with Myer’s period and definitions. Inside Retail also noted that David Jones did not confirm reported prior-year loss figures. A 325% rise from an undisclosed base cannot be used to rank financial health against Myer’s audited group sales. Keep the shopper question—where should I buy?—separate from the investor question—whose business is more resilient?
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can better service save the department store?
Helpful service can give a department store a reason to visit instead of buying from a pure online marketplace. Advice reduces the risk of an expensive mistake; immediate stock can solve an urgent need; a knowledgeable employee can combine products across categories; and effective problem resolution can preserve trust after something goes wrong.

Service alone is not enough, however. A shopper must first find a relevant range at an acceptable price. The store must have usable opening hours, reliable stock information, competitive delivery and collection, and a returns process that does not create disproportionate effort. If those basics fail, a friendly interaction cannot compensate for an unavailable product or an unresolved refund.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
The available evidence cannot establish that service changes caused higher retention, loyalty, sales or survival for either chain. Canstar Blue’s cross-sectional survey captures recent opinions, not a multi-year causal link. The companies’ strategy language describes intended experiences, not independently verified delivery. There is therefore no defensible claim that service has saved, or will save, the department-store format.
A stronger test would require repeated service scores for both retailers, matched measures of repeat purchasing and complaints, and financial results reported on comparable definitions. Until those data exist, treat service as one important part of a store-choice decision—not as a proven rescue formula.
A practical decision process before you buy
- Write down the exact mission. Identify the product, acceptable price, required date, size or specification, and whether you need expert advice.
- Check the local option. Confirm the nearest usable store, department opening hours, accessibility and whether the item is physically available.
- Compare the landed price. Include delivery or collection charges, member pricing, gift-card restrictions and any cost of returning the item.
- Test fulfilment. Read the stated dispatch and collection timing and note whether stock is held by the retailer or a concession partner.
- Ask one service question. Before paying, ask staff to explain the product, stock transfer, fitting, warranty or return route. The clarity and ownership of the answer are more useful than a slogan.
- Save the evidence. Keep receipts, order numbers, product condition records and the name or department of anyone who promised a follow-up.
- Review the result. After delivery or collection, record whether the item, timing and support matched what was promised. Your own repeated experience is more relevant to your next purchase than a national average alone.
Common mistakes in the comparison
- Calling the Canstar Blue result a service victory. It is an overall award built from six criteria, and the accessible page does not provide a service-only score.
- Comparing unlike financial figures. Myer’s A$4,088.8 million is a group sales measure with concession-holder sales; David Jones’s 325% EBITDA figure is a partial-period percentage without a disclosed base.
- Treating strategy as performance. “Seamless” service language explains what management says it wants to deliver, not what every customer receives.
- Assuming a national chain is uniform. Staffing, stock, queues and returns can differ by branch, department, concession and day.
- Ignoring the transaction after checkout. Delivery delays, collection rules and return effort can erase an apparent price advantage.
The useful 2026 verdict
Choose Myer when its broad range, nearby store, current price and fulfilment fit your purchase; its overall satisfaction award is the clearest independent edge in the available evidence. Choose David Jones when its premium range, specific brand or local service experience better matches the job. Neither choice is justified by claiming a proven service winner, and the evidence does not show that service by itself can rescue department stores. The sensible comparison is the complete trip: product, final cost, convenience and the quality of help when something goes wrong.
