Short answer: a mutual fund SIP is a way to contribute periodically to a mutual fund scheme, while a recurring deposit (RD) is a bank-deposit contract with a stated tenure and rate. An SIP does not have its own return or risk level: those come from the scheme’s holdings, which may include equity, debt or other eligible securities. An RD offers bank-defined interest and maturity terms, but its early-closure rules and deposit-insurance protection are limited by the product and applicable law.
There is no universal winner. Compare a named mutual fund scheme with a specific bank RD using the same contribution schedule and time horizon, then account for market risk, taxes, expenses, liquidity and premature-exit rules.

At a glance: SIP and RD are different products
| Comparison point | Mutual fund SIP | Recurring deposit |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A periodic fixed-amount purchase in a selected mutual fund scheme | Regular fixed deposits into a bank account for a chosen tenure |
| What determines the outcome | The scheme’s holdings and market prices; the NAV can rise or fall | The bank’s applicable deposit rate and its calculation rules |
| Return certainty | Not assured; the investment value can fluctuate and principal can be lost | The bank sets the rate and maturity terms for the product; current terms and penalties must be checked |
| Capital protection | No general guarantee of principal | Eligible deposits, including RDs, receive DICGC insurance only within the statutory limit and conditions |
| Access before maturity | Units can generally be redeemed on working days, subject to scheme processing and any exit load | Premature withdrawal follows the bank’s product rules and may reduce interest or apply a penalty |
| Best first question | Does the scheme’s risk and expected holding period fit the goal? | Do the tenure, rate and early-exit terms fit the goal? |
SEBI describes a mutual fund as a pool of investor money invested in securities according to objectives disclosed in the offer documents. Its investor guidance says to compare risk and expected yield after tax and to examine scheme features, risk factors, expenses and loads (SEBI Investor Education Programme).

SIP means Systematic Investment Plan. AMFI defines it as a methodology for investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals rather than investing a lump sum (AMFI: Mutual Fund / Systematic Investment Plan). The SIP instruction controls the timing and amount of purchases; it does not create a separate investment with a fixed return.

The scheme supplies the risk
An equity-fund SIP buys exposure to the shares held by that scheme. A debt-fund SIP is exposed to the credit, interest-rate and liquidity characteristics of its debt holdings. Other schemes may use different eligible assets. The scheme’s objective, portfolio, risk factors, expenses and exit-load provisions are set out in its documents; read those before setting up the instruction.
AMFI states that mutual fund schemes are not guaranteed- or assured-return products, that values fluctuate and that investors can lose principal. Past performance does not guarantee future performance (AMFI: Risks in Mutual Funds). A fixed monthly debit therefore does not make the investment safe, and spreading purchases over time does not eliminate market risk.
What happens to each instalment
Each contribution purchases units at the scheme’s applicable NAV after the transaction is accepted. When the NAV is higher, the instalment buys fewer units; when it is lower, it buys more. That mechanical result is not a promise that returns will improve, nor does it prevent a loss if the scheme’s value falls.

What an RD is and what the bank controls
An RD is a bank deposit contract. You agree to pay a stated instalment for a selected tenure; the bank applies the rate and maturity calculation specified for that product. The instalment amount, tenure choices, interest rate, due dates, missed-payment treatment and maturity amount are all product terms, not features that are identical across banks.

Rates and tenure are bank-specific
For example, one bank’s RD page lists tenures from 12 to 120 months and ties rates to its term-deposit rates for public and senior citizens (SBI Recurring Deposit). That page contains terms dated from 2022 and rates showing a 2025 effective date, so treat it as an illustration of how a bank structures an RD and verify the live rate, tenure and conditions before opening one.
RD money is not automatically risk-free
An RD does not fluctuate with a daily market NAV, but it remains a claim on the bank under the deposit contract. DICGC’s FAQ includes recurring deposits among covered deposit types and states a maximum insurance cover of ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, including principal and interest held in the same right and capacity, subject to the applicable rules and exceptions (RBI FAQ: DICGC Deposit Insurance). The limit is not ₹5,00,000 for every account separately at the same bank, and it is not an unlimited guarantee. Check whether the actual bank is insured and how your deposits are aggregated for coverage.
Risk and return certainty
Market risk versus contract terms
With an SIP, the value you could receive on a given day depends on the scheme’s NAV. Equity exposure can produce substantial fluctuations; debt schemes also have risks described in their documents. You may redeem for less than the amount contributed.

With an RD, the bank declares the applicable rate and maturity terms for the selected product. If you keep the contract to maturity and meet its conditions, the bank’s calculation determines the maturity amount. That is greater certainty than a market-linked NAV, but it is not the same as a guarantee that every early-exit outcome will preserve the quoted return.

Why a generic “which earns more?” answer is misleading
An SIP return percentage cannot be compared fairly with an RD rate without naming the scheme, bank, dates, contribution timing, holding period, expenses, taxes and exit rules. A high-risk equity scheme and a short-tenure RD answer different financial needs. Even two debt schemes can differ in credit quality, duration and costs.
AMFI reported ₹32,297 crore collected through SIPs in August 2026 (AMFI). This is a contribution-flow statistic, not an investment return, and the available sources do not establish a like-for-like RD contribution figure. It should not be used to claim that SIPs outperform RDs.
Flexibility and access to your money
Redeeming an SIP investment
SEBI investor education describes the convenience of investing or redeeming in a mutual fund on working days (SEBI Investor: Understanding Mutual Funds). In practice, the scheme’s cut-off, settlement and processing rules determine when money reaches you. An exit load may apply if units are redeemed within the period specified in the scheme documents. A redemption request also crystallises the NAV available under those rules, which may be below your purchase cost.

Closing an RD early
An RD’s liquidity is governed by the bank’s contract. A bank may permit premature withdrawal, but the interest can be recalculated at a lower applicable rate or reduced by a penalty. SBI’s depositor-rights policy, for example, says the bank may at its discretion allow premature withdrawal of a term deposit and must declare its penalty policy; this is that bank’s policy example, not a universal rule for every RD (SBI Policy on Depositors’ Rights).

Before opening an RD, find the exact answer to four questions: can it be closed early, how is the interest recalculated, is a penalty charged, and what happens if an instalment is missed? Do not infer those answers from another bank’s product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Costs, taxes and the amount you actually keep
For an SIP, inspect the scheme’s expenses and any exit load. SEBI specifically advises investors to review expenses and loads and to compare expected yield after tax. The NAV shown to you is not a promise of the amount you will keep after all applicable charges and taxes.
For an RD, inspect the bank’s quoted rate, maturity calculation, premature-closure treatment and any charges connected with missed instalments. Tax treatment depends on the applicable law and your circumstances; use the current rules for the relevant assessment year rather than assuming that an RD rate or an SIP return is an after-tax figure.
When comparing two options, write down the expected contribution total, the stated maturity or valuation date, all disclosed costs, the tax treatment you will apply and the amount that must remain accessible for emergencies. A higher pre-tax number can be inferior if it carries unsuitable risk or cannot be accessed when needed.

How to compare an SIP and an RD step by step
- Define the goal and deadline. Record what the money is for, the date it is needed and how much loss, if any, you could tolerate at that date.
- Choose the actual products. Note the mutual fund scheme name, category and documents, and the bank, RD tenure, instalment date and current rate. “SIP” and “RD” alone are not sufficiently specific.
- Match the cash-flow schedule. Use the same instalment amount, payment frequency and start date for both comparisons. A lump-sum projection beside a monthly RD is not like-for-like.
- List the risks. For the scheme, identify the assets, risk factors, NAV fluctuation, expenses and exit load. For the RD, identify the bank’s terms, missed-payment consequences, early-closure rules and DICGC eligibility.
- Test liquidity. Decide how quickly you might need the money. Confirm the scheme’s redemption processing and the RD’s premature-withdrawal formula before committing.
- Compare after-tax outcomes. Apply the tax rules relevant to your situation and use net amounts, not an advertised rate or an assumed market return.
- Check concentration. Keep within the amount of bank-deposit insurance you are relying on, and avoid selecting a mutual fund merely because its recent performance is high.
- Document the decision. Save the scheme documents, bank rate sheet, opening date, tenure, charges and the reason the product matches your goal. Review when the goal, rate or product terms change.
Which option fits common goals?
A near-term, date-certain payment
If the money must be available on a known date and a fall in value would jeopardise the payment, examine an RD’s maturity and early-exit terms first. That does not make every RD appropriate: the tenure must end before the payment date, and you need a plan for missed instalments or an emergency withdrawal.
A long-term goal with capacity for fluctuations
An SIP may be suitable for someone who can remain invested through market falls and whose chosen scheme’s risk matches the goal. The relevant question is not whether SIPs are “safe,” but whether the underlying portfolio and time horizon can tolerate the possibility of a lower value when the money is needed.
Money that may be needed unexpectedly
Neither product should automatically be treated as an emergency fund. An SIP redemption can occur on working days but may realise a loss or incur an exit load. An RD may impose an interest reduction or penalty on early closure. Keep a separate, readily accessible reserve and evaluate each product’s actual access rules.

- Calling SIP an investment category. It is a contribution method; the mutual fund scheme supplies the exposure and risk.
- Promising an SIP return. Mutual fund schemes are not assured-return products, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
- Calling an RD risk-free. It has bank and contract risk, and DICGC insurance is limited to eligible deposits within the statutory conditions.
- Comparing a bank rate with an unspecified mutual fund return. Use named products, identical cash flows, the same dates and net-of-cost, net-of-tax figures.
- Ignoring exit conditions. Check exit loads for the scheme and premature-closure or missed-instalment rules for the RD.
- Using old rate information. Bank rates and product terms change. The example bank page cited above displays older dated information; verify the live terms at the time of opening.
- Confusing SIP collections with performance. A contribution-flow number, such as AMFI’s August 2026 figure, says nothing by itself about investor returns.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the goal date fixed, and can you tolerate a lower value on that date?
- Do you understand the underlying mutual fund holdings and their disclosed risk factors?
- Have you verified the RD’s current rate, tenure, maturity calculation and missed-payment rules?
- Could you need the money before maturity, and have you checked the exact exit cost?
- Are you relying on deposit insurance, and is the total covered amount within ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank under the applicable conditions?
- Have you compared after-tax amounts rather than headline rates?
- Would a change in income, goal date or risk capacity require a review?
Bottom line
Choose an RD when the bank’s stated tenure, rate and maturity terms fit a date-specific need and the limited deposit-insurance framework is understood. Choose an SIP only when the selected mutual fund scheme’s holdings, market risk, costs and investment horizon fit your goal. The contribution pattern may look similar, but the underlying contracts—and the uncertainty of the outcome—are fundamentally different.
