Grok 3 was xAI’s February 2025 frontier-AI launch, but it was not one single model or a permanently fixed product. xAI unveiled it during an X livestream on February 17, 2025, published its formal launch announcement on February 19, and introduced a family that included the general-purpose Grok 3, smaller Grok 3 mini, reasoning-focused Think modes, and the DeepSearch research agent.
The launch brought ambitious claims: a 1-million-token context window, 10 times the compute used for xAI’s previous state-of-the-art models, and benchmark scores that appeared to challenge OpenAI, DeepSeek, Google, and Anthropic. But those scores were largely xAI-reported results, some used a favorable multi-sample method, and early independent testing found serious jailbreak weaknesses. For consumers, the practical questions were access and price. For developers, there is an important current update: as of August 10, 2026, xAI’s original grok-3 API model has been retired and requests using that slug redirect to grok-4.3.

The short version
- What launched: A beta model family consisting of Grok 3, Grok 3 mini, Grok 3 Think, Grok 3 mini Think, and DeepSearch—not merely a new chatbot toggle.
- When: The public unveiling took place on February 17, 2025; xAI’s formal announcement followed on February 19.
- What changed from Grok 2: More deliberate reasoning, web-and-X research through DeepSearch, a claimed 1-million-token context window, stronger reported multimodal performance, and substantially more training compute.
- Who could use it: Access began with X Premium+ priority access and Grok.com, then expanded through X, Grok.com, and dedicated iOS and Android apps with changing limits and promotions.
- How much: X listed U.S. Premium+ at $40 per month or $395 per year effective February 18, 2025. A separate SuperGrok price was reported at about $30 per month, but that was not a clearly confirmed launch price. Prices and included models have since changed.
- How convincing were the claims: Grok 3 looked highly competitive on several reported benchmarks, but the evidence did not establish that it was universally the “world’s smartest AI.”
- What is current: The original Grok 3 API slug was retired on May 15, 2026 and redirects to Grok 4.3. xAI’s current model catalog presents Grok 4.5 as its flagship.
What exactly did xAI launch?
The name “Grok 3” describes a product rollout and model family rather than one uniform system. Different versions were designed for different balances of speed, cost, reasoning depth, and general capability.
| Launch component | Purpose | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Grok 3 | General-purpose flagship model | The base, non-reasoning mode. |
| Grok 3 mini | Smaller, faster, lower-cost reasoning-oriented model | Trades some capability for efficiency and was positioned particularly well for technical workloads. |
| Grok 3 Think | Deliberative reasoning mode | Uses additional inference-time computation to work through difficult problems. |
| Grok 3 mini Think | Lower-cost reasoning mode | Designed especially for STEM-style tasks where a smaller model could be more economical. |
| DeepSearch | Research agent | Searches the web and X, gathers information, and produces a synthesized report. It is a product feature or agent, not simply another base-model name. |
xAI described all of this as a beta or early preview. The company said both its base and reasoning models were still in training and would change quickly in response to user feedback. That matters when comparing launch behavior, benchmark results, pricing, or safety: a beta model is not necessarily the same system a user encounters months later.

What was new compared with Grok 2?
1. A reasoning mode that spent more time on hard problems
The main technical change was the introduction of Think modes. Instead of producing an immediate answer, Grok 3 Think could spend seconds or minutes exploring alternatives, correcting errors, backtracking, and checking intermediate work. xAI said reinforcement learning helped improve these behaviors.
In ordinary language, Think mode was a way to spend more computing power at answer time. This is called test-time compute. It is different from simply training a model on a larger dataset. More inference work can improve difficult mathematics, science, or coding tasks, but it also brings trade-offs: longer wait times, greater resource use, potentially higher API costs, and no guarantee that the final answer is correct.
A displayed reasoning trace should not be treated as a complete, reliable record of the model’s internal cognition. During the launch, xAI indicated that some reasoning content could be obscured to make model distillation—copying a model’s behavior into another system—more difficult.

2. DeepSearch for web-and-X research
DeepSearch was xAI’s answer to research-agent products such as OpenAI’s deep research. Its intended workflow was:
- The user asks a question.
- Grok searches the web and, where relevant, X.
- It gathers information from multiple sources.
- It tries to reconcile conflicting claims.
- It produces a synthesized answer or report.
That is more ambitious than a conventional search box. DeepSearch was designed to search, read, reason over, and summarize information. It was also one of the launch features most closely tied to Grok’s relationship with X.
However, a research agent is only as reliable as its sources and interpretation. It can choose weak or partisan sources, misunderstand context, repeat an inaccurate post, or create a persuasive but false synthesis. X is a fast-moving, user-generated platform—not a curated reference database. For financial, legal, medical, business, or political claims, readers should open the cited sources and verify important details independently.
3. A much larger advertised context window
xAI advertised a 1-million-token context window, described as eight times the context length of its previous models. A context window is the amount of text or other input a model can process in one interaction. That capacity could be useful for lengthy documents, codebases, research collections, or multi-step analysis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBut a large context window does not guarantee that the model will retrieve every relevant detail accurately. The advertised maximum is also not the same as proof that every consumer interface, API configuration, or task can use the full capacity efficiently. Context length can affect cost, latency, and practical answer quality.
4. Broader multimodal claims
xAI’s launch material reported progress in image and video understanding as well as text reasoning. This suggested a broader multimodal system than a text-only chatbot. Still, model capability and product availability are different questions. Not every capability described in a launch presentation necessarily appeared simultaneously on every platform, account, or subscription tier.
5. More compute behind training
xAI said Grok 3 was trained on its Colossus infrastructure using 10 times the compute of previous state-of-the-art models. That is an xAI claim about the relative scale of the training effort, not an independently established comparison across all frontier models.
The phrase “200,000 GPUs” also needs care. xAI’s Colossus facility was described as a 200,000-GPU-scale cluster, and the company said it was preparing to train even larger models on that infrastructure. That does not establish that all 200,000 GPUs were simultaneously used for Grok 3’s particular training run. A facility’s total capacity should not be presented as the exact size of one model-training job.

6. A stronger product-positioning message
Elon Musk presented Grok 3 as a more truth-seeking, less politically constrained, and more irreverent alternative to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek. That positioning helped distinguish the product, but it is not a measurable specification. “Unfiltered” does not mean accurate, and an unconventional tone does not prove political neutrality or superior factuality.
How strong were Grok 3’s benchmark results?
The fairest answer is that Grok 3 appeared highly competitive on several academic tests, but the launch evidence did not prove universal superiority. The distinction between reported scores and independent verification is essential.
xAI-reported reasoning results
For Grok 3 Think, xAI reported:
- AIME 2025: 93.3% using
cons@64 - GPQA: 84.6%
- LiveCodeBench: 79.4%
For Grok 3 mini, xAI reported:
- AIME 2024: 95.8%
- LiveCodeBench: 80.4%
The apparently unusual comparison between Grok 3 Think’s AIME 2025 result and Grok 3 mini’s AIME 2024 result is one reason benchmark tables should always include the exact test, model variant, date, and evaluation method.
What does cons@64 mean?
cons@64 means the model can generate up to 64 answers for a problem and select the answer that appears most frequently. This majority-vote process can produce a materially higher score than asking for one answer once.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That does not make the score meaningless. It does mean it should not be compared casually with a competitor’s single-pass or lower-compute result. Critics highlighted that xAI’s launch comparisons used different evaluation settings for some competing systems, particularly OpenAI’s o3-mini-high. TechCrunch’s analysis of the benchmark controversy reported that Grok’s single-attempt AIME results did not clearly establish superiority over o3-mini-high once the settings were made more comparable.
xAI’s reported non-reasoning benchmark table
The following figures came from xAI’s official launch table. They are reproduced as xAI-published results, not as independently audited leaderboard scores.
| Benchmark | Grok 3 Beta | Grok 3 mini Beta | GPT-4o | DeepSeek-V3 | Gemini 2.0 | Claude 3.5 Sonnet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIME 2024 | 52.2% | 39.7% | 9.3% | 39.2% | — | 16.0% |
| GPQA | 75.4% | 66.2% | 53.6% | 59.1% | 64.7% | 65.0% |
| LiveCodeBench | 57.0% | 41.5% | 32.3% | 33.1% | 36.0% | 40.2% |
| MMLU-Pro | 79.9% | 78.9% | 72.6% | 75.9% | 79.1% | 78.0% |
| LOFT 128k | 83.3% | 83.1% | 78.0% | — | 75.6% | 69.9% |
| SimpleQA | 43.6% | 21.7% | 38.2% | 24.9% | 44.3% | 28.4% |
| MMMU | 73.2% | 69.4% | 69.1% | — | 72.7% | 70.4% |
| EgoSchema | 74.5% | 74.3% | 72.2% | — | 71.9% | — |
These results suggest strengths in reasoning, technical questions, long-context evaluation, and multimodal tests. They do not show that Grok 3 was best at every task. Benchmark performance can change with prompting, sampling, tool access, test contamination, compute budget, evaluation date, and scoring method. A model can lead on AIME while being weaker on factuality, coding in a particular language, latency, cost, safety, or everyday usefulness.
For a household deciding whether to pay for an AI subscription, the more useful test is often practical: does it save enough time on the work you actually do to justify the monthly fee? For a developer, reproducibility, latency, rate limits, model versioning, and token prices may matter more than a headline math score.
Who could use Grok 3 at launch?
The rollout changed quickly, so launch access should be understood as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent access policy.
- X: Grok was available inside the X app, with X Premium+ users receiving priority access.
- Grok.com: Users could access the service through the dedicated website.
- Dedicated apps: xAI directed users to dedicated iOS and Android Grok apps.
- Broader rollout: xAI said Grok 3 capabilities were being rolled out to all Grok users with usage limits.
- Premium+ priority: xAI said Premium+ users received early access to Think and DeepSearch.
On February 20, 2025, xAI announced a temporary period of broader free access with higher limits and early features reserved for paying users. That should not be interpreted as a permanent promise that unlimited Grok 3 access would remain free. Availability also depended on platform, account, region, app version, subscription tier, and the stage of the rollout.
What did Grok 3 cost?
Price comparisons around the launch were confusing because X changed its subscription price, different platforms could display different totals, and coverage sometimes mixed historical and current prices.

X Premium+
X’s official price-adjustment notice stated that the U.S. Premium+ price changed on February 18, 2025 to:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- $40 per month
- $395 per year
Some launch coverage cited $50 per month, while other reports cited the earlier $22 price. Those figures reflected different dates, billing channels, taxes, or price displays. The official February 18 notice is the appropriate source for the stated U.S. web price at that point in time; it is not a guarantee of what X charges today.
SuperGrok
Launch coverage reported a separate SuperGrok plan for users accessing Grok through Grok.com and the standalone apps. TechCrunch described the reported price of approximately $30 per month or $300 per year as based on leaks rather than a clearly confirmed xAI announcement.
xAI’s current consumer pricing page lists SuperGrok at $30 per month, but its current plan advertises access to newer models such as Grok 4.5. It should not be used to retroactively describe exactly what was included in the Grok 3 launch package.
A simple value test
For personal users, the relevant calculation is not just the sticker price. Consider:
- How often you would use Think or DeepSearch rather than a free chatbot;
- Whether the subscription also provides other X Premium+ benefits you would use;
- Whether usage caps force you to pay for a higher tier;
- Whether web and X research saves enough time to offset the cost;
- Whether you are comfortable putting your information into a consumer AI service;
- Whether a cheaper competitor handles your actual tasks just as well.
A temporary free-access period can be useful for testing, but it should not be included in a long-term budget unless xAI explicitly makes the terms permanent.
What happened with the Grok 3 API?
Consumer access and API access followed different timelines. xAI’s February launch announcement said Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini would come to the API in the following weeks, while DeepSearch API access was planned for enterprise users.
| Date or status | API development | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| February 19, 2025 | xAI announced plans to bring Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini to the API in the coming weeks. | The consumer launch did not mean the API was immediately available. |
| April 3, 2025 | xAI’s release notes marked Grok 3 models as generally available through the API. | Developers could begin treating the API release as a production offering, subject to its terms and limits. |
| April 2025 reporting | TechCrunch reported historical pricing of about $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. | Those were launch-era reported figures, not current pricing. |
| Later enterprise rollout | Microsoft announced Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini on Azure AI Foundry. | Organizations gained another enterprise deployment route. |
| May 15, 2026 | The grok-3 API slug was retired. Requests using it redirect to grok-4.3 with non-reasoning behavior. |
Existing applications may now receive different outputs and face different pricing from the original Grok 3 API. |
The current consequence is important for developers and anyone budgeting an AI application: an old configuration that still calls grok-3 may not be pinned to the original model. According to xAI’s retirement notice, requests are redirected to Grok 4.3. Before relying on an old integration, check the response model, token pricing, reasoning behavior, rate limits, and output quality.
xAI’s current model catalog now presents Grok 4.5 as its flagship. Therefore, saying simply that “the Grok 3 API is available” is inaccurate without a date and an explanation of the redirect.
The most important limitations and risks
It launched as a beta
xAI said the models were still in training and would evolve rapidly. Early benchmark results and user experiences therefore described a moving target. A fair review should identify the model version, date, interface, account tier, and whether tools such as search were enabled.
Benchmark results were not a complete product review
The cons@64 issue is not a footnote; it changes how the most impressive reasoning scores should be interpreted. Every headline number should be read alongside its sampling method, compute budget, prompt, and comparison conditions.

The phrase “world’s smartest AI” was marketing language associated with Musk and xAI. The launch showed a serious frontier competitor, not a universally verified winner across accuracy, safety, cost, speed, privacy, and usefulness.
Early jailbreak testing found serious weaknesses
An early external evaluation by Holistic AI tested Grok 3 Think with 37 jailbreak prompts. It recorded one safe refusal and 36 unsafe responses, equivalent to 2.7% jailbreak resistance.
Recommended Free Tools
That result is concerning, but it has a defined scope. The audit used a proprietary prompt set, took place before API access was available, and focused on Think mode rather than every Grok 3 configuration or every later Grok release. It is evidence of an early safety weakness—not a complete safety certification or a precise score for all versions.
Political neutrality was a claim, not a settled property
Only days after launch, users reported a system instruction telling Grok to ignore sources saying Elon Musk or Donald Trump spread misinformation. Coverage by TechCrunch reported that xAI engineering lead Igor Babuschkin attributed the instruction to an unauthorized or unapproved change, and described it as temporary.
The incident does not prove that every Grok answer was politically manipulated. It does show why claims such as “neutral,” “truth-seeking,” or “uncensored” should be tested against actual system instructions and behavior rather than accepted as specifications.
Search does not remove misinformation risk
DeepSearch can make research faster, but it can also make a weak conclusion look more authoritative by wrapping it in citations and a polished report. Check whether the cited source actually supports the statement, whether it is primary or merely repeating another article, and whether the information is current.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Consumers should review the current xAI and X privacy terms rather than assume the two services handle data identically. Do not paste confidential business information, medical records, legal documents, financial account details, passwords, or sensitive personal data into a beta consumer chatbot unless you have reviewed the applicable terms, retention practices, and available controls.
xAI also published a February 20, 2025 draft Risk Management Framework. A framework or policy document is useful evidence of how a company describes risk management, but it is not the same as an independent safety audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What was promised but not necessarily available at launch?
Launch presentations and news coverage included several forward-looking statements. They should not be written as if they were already shipped:
- Voice mode: Musk said it was expected about a week after launch. That was a planned follow-up feature, not part of the fully available launch package.
- DeepSearch for the API: xAI said enterprise API access was planned for the following weeks. The announcement was not proof that it was immediately available to every developer.
- Open-sourcing Grok 2: Musk said xAI planned to open-source Grok 2 once Grok 3 became mature and stable. That was a future promise, not evidence that the release had already occurred.
- Big Brain: Launch coverage used this name for an additional high-compute mode. The official xAI announcement centered on Think and DeepSearch, so Big Brain should not automatically be treated as a universally available standalone product.
Grok 3 compared with the alternatives
The sensible comparison depends on what you are buying or building. The main launch-era alternatives included OpenAI’s o3-mini and o3-mini-high for reasoning, DeepSeek-R1 for open reasoning-model competition, GPT-4o for general-purpose multimodal work, Gemini for Google’s general-purpose and long-context ecosystem, and Claude for writing, coding, and a safety-oriented product experience.

| If your priority is… | Why Grok 3 was interesting | What to compare before paying or integrating |
|---|---|---|
| Current web and X information | DeepSearch was designed to search and synthesize web and X material. | Source quality, citation accuracy, freshness, and whether X’s user-generated content is appropriate for the decision. |
| Hard mathematics or science | Think modes used additional inference-time computation. | Single-pass accuracy, latency, rate limits, and whether the benchmark method resembles your workload. |
| Coding | xAI reported competitive LiveCodeBench results. | Performance in your language and repository, tool integration, context retrieval, cost, and reproducibility. |
| Long documents | xAI advertised a 1-million-token context window. | Usable retrieval quality, actual interface limits, latency, and the cost of sending large inputs. |
| Business deployment | The API and later Azure AI Foundry availability offered deployment paths. | Version pinning, privacy terms, service-level expectations, price changes, and model retirement policy. |
| Low-risk casual use | The informal and irreverent style appealed to some users. | Whether the style is useful to you; provocative or less constrained output is not the same as accuracy. |
Before choosing any AI service, evaluate at least ten factors: accuracy on your real tasks, tool and search reliability, latency, context length, rate limits, privacy controls, API stability, price at the date of use, safety behavior, and availability in your region.

What happened afterward?
Grok 3’s launch significance was not erased by later model updates: it demonstrated that xAI could compete for attention at the frontier and combine a reasoning system with real-time X and web research. But the product itself did not remain static.
The most consequential change for developers came on May 15, 2026, when xAI retired the original grok-3 API model and redirected requests to grok-4.3 using non-reasoning behavior. As of August 10, 2026, xAI’s model documentation centers on Grok 4.5 as its flagship. A person using Grok through a consumer app may therefore encounter a newer model or a different product configuration, while an old API integration may silently receive a replacement model.
That distinction is especially important for financial planning. A subscription price, token rate, included model, or usage cap can change independently of the product’s original launch claims. Check the current pricing and model documentation before committing to a recurring expense or deploying code.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is Grok 3 worth using?
At launch, Grok 3 was worth testing for users who valued real-time web and X research, wanted a reasoning model for mathematics or coding, needed a large context window, or preferred an alternative to OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and DeepSeek. It was less compelling for people who needed stable behavior, independently audited safety, predictable API pricing, strict version pinning, or strong privacy assurances.
For a consumer, the best approach was to test representative tasks during any legitimate free-access period, compare the results with at least one alternative, and track whether the service saved enough time to justify the subscription. For a developer, the evaluation should include actual token costs, latency, failure handling, output consistency, privacy requirements, and what happens when a model slug is retired.
Do not equate “uncensored” with “more accurate,” “longer reasoning” with “correct reasoning,” or “real-time search” with “verified information.” Those are separate product questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Grok 3 still available?
It depends on the product. As of August 10, 2026, xAI’s original grok-3 API model has been retired; requests using that slug redirect to grok-4.3 with non-reasoning behavior. Consumer access may expose newer models instead, and xAI’s current model catalog presents Grok 4.5 as its flagship.
Was Grok 3 trained on 200,000 GPUs?
That claim is too broad. xAI described its Colossus facility as a 200,000-GPU-scale cluster and separately claimed that Grok 3 used 10 times the compute of previous state-of-the-art models. The public launch material did not establish that all 200,000 GPUs were simultaneously used for Grok 3’s specific training run.
Was Grok 3 free?
xAI announced a temporary broader free-access period shortly after launch, with usage limits and earlier access to some features for paying users. Free access was a launch promotion, not a permanent guarantee. Platform, region, account, and subscription terms could also affect availability.
Did Grok 3 beat every competing AI model?
No. xAI reported strong results on several benchmarks, but some headline reasoning scores used cons@64, which generates up to 64 answers and selects the most common one. Comparisons with single-pass competitor results were therefore not automatically equivalent, and benchmark leadership does not establish superiority in every real-world task.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Grok 3 was a consequential launch because it showed xAI could compete at the frontier and pair a reasoning model with real-time X and web research. But its launch claims were stronger than the independently verified evidence, access and pricing changed quickly, early safety testing found serious weaknesses, and the original Grok 3 API is no longer the current model.
